    My advice would be, if you are sure you really want to become a jeweller then buy a Durston mill, a high quality mould(Durston again) and a Smith little oxy propane torch. Buy your silver in granule by the kilo and you will save a lot of money over time.👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

    I am just starting out gathering all the materials to start metal smithing and when buying silver sheets and wire they often say things like “½ hard” or “dead soft” which would be best in creating bezels/rings? Thank you so much for your videos they have helped me immensely!

    • @TheArtOfMetalsmithing
      @TheArtOfMetalsmithing  5 років тому +4

      Great comment, thank you so much! So I've seen this on Rio Grande's website too. In the UK they rather say "hard" or "fully annealed". I understand that dead soft = fully annealed. Here is a quote from a blog I found online: "Dead soft, which refers to the hardness [of wire], is usually used to describe sterling silver or gold filled wire. Dead-soft
      wire has not been hardened at all, making it the most malleable. It is
      most often used when a design calls for making several bends and loops."
      Hope that helps! :) And good luck with your creations :)

      No, it often is mistaken for the other. The best thing to do is when you first get it to mark the solder and its type. Colour code with permanent marker, put painters tape on the end and put S, M, or H on. Stay safe, Steve...

    • @TheArtOfMetalsmithing
      @TheArtOfMetalsmithing  2 роки тому +1

      Of course! I will share a video soon, where I will show how to make a bezel like that using a wire that's called a bearer wire or stepped wire (it has a step on one side, that becomes the inner wall when you make a bezel and supports the stone, so you don't need a backing plate). Another way is to cut out the shape out of the backing plate, to open it, but leave just enough to support the stone and hold it in place :)

    I am an absolute beginner, I am thinking of getting started silversmithing, and I was wondering two things:
    - do you typically use a lower gauge sheet metal for the backs of the bezel vs the bezel wire you wrap around a stone, or would this be fine to use the same gauge?
    - this might be a silly question, but with the super soft metals that you showed, does the metal become more hard as part of the heating process? Or will the final product still be very soft? I am wondering if it is so easily bent would this cause issues with the jewellery?
    Thanks for your super informative videos!

    Hello, I need help. I bought all the tools to for sawing my design but it’s incredibly difficult. I don’t know if it’s the saw blades or something else but they keep breaking and have a hard time sawing through the metal. I use bees wax on the saw blades and still it’s incredibly hard. The metal I’m using is 24ga pure copper. Am I doing something wrong?

    • @TheArtOfMetalsmithing
      @TheArtOfMetalsmithing  3 роки тому +1

      Don't worry, I'm sure you'll figure it out! Sawing isn't hard, but it's not easy either. It takes time to practice, especially with harder metals like copper and brass. Identify when your blade breaks - is it when you try to turn the corner or round part? On a straight line? If it's the former, you will need to focus on proper motion and not try to turn the blade too suddenly (the blade doesn't work like scissors do, you need to prepare the blade to turn before you change the direction). Plese check out my two videos on sawing, where I explained all of that! :) ua-cam.com/video/2NZD9scVuJk/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/1MDq01vEvmg/v-deo.html (P.S. Sometimes blades are to blame. What brand are they? Cheap, no name brand blades can be of very bad quality and will break constantly. It's worth investing in better quality saw blades).

    Thank you for all your videos! I’ve watched them all at least once, most more than once!
    I realize this video is 3 years old so I completely understand if you don’t see this comment! But I’ll ask anyway, just in case.
    So I’m attempting to buy some sterling silver beaded wire, which I can only find online. Which means I can’t actually see, touch or feel it. So I’m feeling unsure of the appropriate gauge to choose. The pics I’ve seen on multiple websites don’t really provide a frame of reference. And reading the comments of the people that purchased the wire I’m looking at, frequently refer to 16g-18g wire as “much smaller than they thought”and “breaks easily”, stuff like that. Which seems strange to me as those gauges aren’t that “small” in terms of round wire. I wondered if you could provide any tips for buying and/or working with beaded wire. FYI, I plan to solder it around a bezel or something like that.
    Many thanks,
    Andrea

    What’s the difference in between silver solder and bezel stripe they look so similar ? And thank you for your great videos

    • @TheArtOfMetalsmithing
      @TheArtOfMetalsmithing  Рік тому +1

      silver solder is only used for soldering (joining metals using heat, a special solution called flux and solder. Solder usually comes in a form of a wire or a sheet that can be cut into tiny pieces and then applied in the area where we want to solder two metal elements together). Bezel stripe is essentially a thin stripe of a fine silver metal and it's already in a form that's easy to wrap around the stone and make a bezel. You can cut your own, custom bezel stripe out of silver sheet too. But using bezel stripe/bezel wire is just a bit easier and more efficient. I hope this helps! :)

    Hi there, thank you for this video! I asked this question on a different video but I'm not sure if you saw it, but according to charts, one should use the "2"saw blades for 17 gauge sheet/1.2mm. You said you use much finer blade than what the chart says, which blade would you use for 1.2mm thick metal? Thanks! I am planning to buy some basic tools to practice sawing as I can't go back to metalsmithing class for a long time and I only went to 2 classes so I am still quite clueless. I may irritate you with questions from time to time! I hope you don't mind!

    • @TheArtOfMetalsmithing
      @TheArtOfMetalsmithing  4 роки тому +1

      Normally I would use the blade according to the chart. But I like using finer blades so I can have litle to no cleaning afterwards. They are also easier for me to operate and better for finer details :) It's my personal preference, and definitely not how it "should" be 😀 Once we know how to use the tools, it's ok to experiment and find the use that suits us personally. Good luck!

    Hi! So all the wire and sheet isn’t all sterling silver? I can just get regular wire at the craft store? I bought sterling silver sheet but I’m a bit confused on what type of silver I need

    • @TheArtOfMetalsmithing
      @TheArtOfMetalsmithing  4 роки тому

      oh no, definitely sterling silver! The regular metal that can be bought at the craft store won't work. For setting stones you can also use fine silver. And sterling silver for metal sheet 😊

    Love this video, thank you! In Holland we need to order silver sheet and wire by grams, do you too? If so, how many grams do you usually order to get a nice amount of bezel strip or silver sheet? Thank you!

    • @TheArtOfMetalsmithing
      @TheArtOfMetalsmithing  4 роки тому +1

      I order from Cooksongold, and they usually have it in mm, cm and mt or price per unit, so it's much easier to order. I'm not sure how many grams it is though, sorry! But you can use their website as a calculator, becasue they tell you how many grams a certain amount you've chosen is, here's the link to their shop www.cooksongold.com/

    • @liessmeekens7579
      @liessmeekens7579 2 роки тому

      @Maria Schoofs, on the site from herens en herens or bijou moderne you can use mm. There site calculates the grams. 😁 What sites do you prefer in Holland?

    Hi Basia! I am looking to order some brass sheet metal of shape cutting. I plan to buy 20 gauge, but the company I'm looking at calls metal dead soft. Do I want that? Or hard? Thank you so much for your expertise! :-)

    • @TheArtOfMetalsmithing
      @TheArtOfMetalsmithing  5 років тому +2

      Hi Amy! I've never used this type of metal, so I'm afraid I won't be able to give you a definitive answer... Dead soft means that it's softer, which might be actually good if you plan to further shape the metal. But because I've never tried it, I can't tell for sure. Maybe try messaging the company and let them know what project you will be working on and which one they would recommend? Hopefully they'd be able to help with their own product :) Good luck! xx

      @@TheArtOfMetalsmithing OK, thank you so much Basia! I will reach out to the company. So when you buy your sheet metal, it's not label as , soft/ half hard/ hard? Maybe because I am looking at brass, and not silver, there are more options... Thank you for your awesome videos and your help!

      @@nobunk1234 When I buy from the Cooksongold in the UK, they use term "fully annealed" (which I think would be dead soft, but not 100% sure). I haven't really bought any brass though. I hope the company replies! :)

      @nobunk1234 5 років тому +2

      @@TheArtOfMetalsmithing OK, yes - the company replied and said dead-soft would work best. And it does say annealed next to the item. Perfect! I'm learning LOL. Thank you so much for your time :-)

      I found that the whole chasing and repousse, was a really good kind to start with, I bought the pitch from metalsmithing tools, I used a large rock that'd a hollow section to cup the pitch, a heat gun to melt, and then bought tool steel and ground in profiles of tools.

      @@TheArtOfMetalsmithing One thing I’m struggling with is deciding the best way to set a large Brazilian Trillion Alexandrite I have that I want to make into a necklace. Bezel or basket set; 3 or 6 claws; at 3 points, slightly off point or mid-side; all are questions I have even above and beyond the styling decisions. As it is my birthstone, I want o keep it very safe but its colour change properties demand ready access to different light sources. Any ideas you may have would be appreciated. I know the Trillion cut is also becoming very popular, so others might find it fun and informative to watch your process.
      Thank you for everything and be well... Joanna McDee
