There's a good argument for gravel bikes on these more adventurous road climbs. The extra gear for the grades/altitude and wider tires for the expansion joints (or rougher roads on other rides) do make a difference! Thanks for the content
I'm glad to see someone has made a very nice video about Independence and Onion Valley. It rarely gets noted. Having lived there, it offers quite a bit of interesting backroad finds and history. And it's small. My high school class was 11. Swing by for a visit.
Ive been doing it everyear since ‘12, and it should be noted there is a sweet, albeit rocky in spots, dirt offshoot climbs nearly 3 miles, off the first major lefthand hairpin turn about 1/3 of the way up. Worth tryng, but not for everyone.
Beautiful video. I have done Onion Valley a couple of times on my road bike. It is a bucket-list climb and descent. I hope you ride and film more of these Eastern Sierra climbs like Horseshoe Meadows, Whitney Portal, Sonora Pass and Tioga Pass. Not gravel rides but great rides!
I wonder how this ride compares with White Mountain road out of Big Pine. I always thought that was one of the toughest climbs in CA, topping out at 11,000ft.
If you climb White Mountain via Silver Canyon, it's all dirt and extremely difficult. We do this on mountain bikes, and start at 3 am. Single hardest ride I've ever done.

I rode Onion Valley last week and I descended faster on 55s than on 32s because of those expansion joints.

Hoping to do more climbs in October.

I think gravel is more about adventure than the surface itself. I definitely want to get to all of those!
As you get older, you will come to enjoy the paved routes just as much as the gravel 🙏🏼
I did put on 32s...
@@GravelBikeCalifornia I ride 700x45 on pavement and love it! Will never go back to skinny tires ✌️
These are so awesome thanks again for doing these
I appreciate it. Thanks goodness there's so much out here!
Awesome graphic comparing the climbs.
It took me almost two hours to compile that clip, but well worth it.

I think Onion is barely ahead just in terms of road climbing, but adding the dirt to White Mountain...

great video, somewhat corny narration.
