Event looks amazing!
@@Hokum48 I missed last year, but I think they improve the course even more
How are road conditions? Looked pretty packed in while you were filming but I'll be attempting the Lost Coast route on some 30mm tires later next Spring. Good enough or are there enough soft spots that I'd be hike-a-biking for significant portions?
I don't think you'll need to hike a bike, but take it easy a bit, especially on the descents. If I did it again, I may do 38s, but maybe 45s. It's more about tire pressure and the roads other than hwy 1 aren't in that great of shape,
What bikes and gearing are they riding in the video?
I was riding a Lauf Seigla with a 40T & 45 in the back. The other two had 50s in the back with a Canyon Grizl & Revel R+ titanium.
I don't know what gearing or legs you had for this, but I tried Josephine coming up from Big Tujunga with my 42T yesterday and that was unpleasantly steep for the first half....
Lukens to Grizzly Flats much more doable on the same bike
@@clausherther I can't believe that I used to ride those on a 1:1 gear ratio.
@@GravelBikeCalifornia yikes, yeah! My Grizl barely comes in 0.95...time to pull out the MTB maybe.
One winter afternoon I made the mistake of climbing Mount lukens too late in the afternoon. I got to the top and it was getting dark quick. I was on the tujunga side and there's quite a bit of snow. Much of the first part of the climb was destroyed from winter storm rain. Ended up deciding to ride the road down to highway to and then into La crescenta. Only problem was, I didn't have a light, I was on a road bike with 700 25 c tires, and Shimano look petals. Riding in the pitch black, on a road bike, clipped in was a fucking nightmare. I ended up puncturing front and rear tubes. I ended up writing down highway 2 on rims only. Ended up taking a taxi home. Sort of fun thinking about it now, but I didn't get back home to the valley until about 1:00 a.m..
Wow. How many times did you say "things can't get any worse..."
Are you rolling on WTB Resolute 50s on your Lauf? How do you like them? I’m rolling on Conti Race Kings and it’s really opened up the fun door for my Lauf around the So Cal mountains.
Right now I have on the Rene Herse Fleecer Ridge 55s endurance which does roll similarly to my Resolute 42s
Excellent video, as always! I think it's time for me to hit Josephine again. My last time up there (over 20 years ago), I crashed on one of the switchbacks and broke my collarbone. I need a happier memory.
Yikes. I did crash in my gravel guide video from four years ago...but not as bad..
I was young and bulletproof, and determined to show off my downhill speed on a group ride. I can’t say that I learned my lesson that day…or any day since. 😂
Very nice! Bummer indeed not being able to get to the summit 😕 Were you tempted to resort to the "do you know who I am?" line? 😊 On a related note, tell us a little about Dave's sweet bike
There was a guy parked there who's job it was to keep their engine running apparently... As for the bike, @djmalwitz have you done a review?
That's a Revel R+ titanium with 50mm Soma Cazadero tires. I'm currently running the XPLR 10-44 cassette and 42t chainring which was not ideal for me on Josephine. Switching over to T-Type soon!
I have recently been watching your videos and the places you share are exactly the locations I want to visit. Thank you very much! Can you also please include information on where we can park the cars? Subscribed and Liked!
Good idea. We just parked before we got into the forest where you'll need a day pass. You can find that spot on the map, but I'll add it.
That was a super fun ride!!!
A lot of bang for the buck
Looks awesome looks like some bikepacking opportunities
Great views and awesome dirt. Thanks for reminding me how much this place sucks.
It only gets better. Or worse. I don't know which way is up or down anymore...
Uh so would you say this is doable on 45mm, gravel slicks or should I put on my gravel wheelset with 55mm tires?
@@mellissanash7517 there used to be a Four Days to Fitness ride where most would ascend May Canyon to Camp 9 on road bikes. The only spot where 55s would come in handy is the first half of a mile descent on Kagel right after the main ascent on it.
@@GravelBikeCalifornia perfect sounds like I'll put my 45mm rear and 55mm front and party.
I require higher BB just for longer cranks.
Smart move.
Aren’t all these fire roads shared with cars? By cars I mean the hordes of Jeeps and Tacomas that routinely jam up every other fire road in So Cal.
@@thisishowiedewitt76 no. Most of the fire roads in the Angeles National Forest are closed to outside traffic and even the open ones for a limited time. You'll see the exceptions in the video...
Thanks for sharing ever make it back out to LA or San Diego I’d like to ride something like this , nice and dry and relatively smooth. But the altitude in the climbing, that’s something else I’d have to deal with since I live in flat Florida.
@shirtlessGraveler305 One thing LA needs is gravel without all this climbing
Great talk here. Setting the right pressure changed gravel riding for me. I have gotten totally hooked on bikepacking but I introduce most with a hotel bikepack first and that has gone really well.
You're a pro now!
🎉 excited
@@gravelpack8536 woohoo
Do you ever switch to a road wheelset for when you do dedicated road rides?
I have a wheelset for my Niner with 32s. I wish I could afford a second for the Lauf.
I want to say you do a great job riding bike all over the country so nice and relaxing with your friend family
It's a lot of balancing.
Right on! Glad you enjoyed our local gravel and single tracks. Definitely one of my favorite loops. ✌️
SLO is a staple for me!
Awesome video as always. I'd love to join next time you're up in the Bay Area!

@@GravelBikeCalifornia Didn't check this until now! Hopefully, I'll catch ya on the next one!
Great video , love to see sunny rides , especially from a snow covered north east here in england
@@anthonykelly3231 we do get some white stuff in SoCal from time to time
Great video. We used to do harding, black star, old camp and whiting on our cross bikes in the early 90's.
To think I used to do climbs like these with cross gearing...
Good, to the point narration will a positive tone, considering some of that looked more mt bike than gravel;). Look those little canyon villages, I lived in Majeska for a couple months in the 80's, they've seen their share of fires and floods lately.
@@jerryscott9598 I love how you can find a number of enclaves like Modjeska in SoCal, but definitely they all are in danger
In your video, you show an open magazine, an article titled ‘the lost coast. What’s the magazine if I may ask? Thxs.
This is the closest I can find: x.com/YuriHauswald/status/971169909626433537
Great video and great ride. Thank you for all you do. Modjeska Grade and Harding are tough on a MTB with the easier gearing, I wouldn't be able to make it up either on my gravel bike...yet... I did go up Maple Springs on my gravel bike Once and had the same thought--even though I think of Maple as just a fireroad, the fact is that it's chunkier than it seems and I found myself definitely feeling underbiked / wishing I had my MTB when coming down Maple, whereas my gravel bike is perfect on Blackstar. I had to stop to take breaks and shake out my hands like the guy in the video did coming down Maple... I use my MTB on Maple, but avoid that trail now (even when open) due to all the motos--seems like that's increased in recent years, maybe due to social media or population growth, or both. Descending Harding probably would have been funner, but you would have missed the Silverado road descent. An alternative would have been to go from 4 Corners to Silverado Motorway via Main Divide, but that would have added some more climbing (~ 6 miles ~ 1,000 feet), but you would wind up at the bottom of Maple Springs (near the gate) after descending Motorway and could descend Silverado road like you did. I've never descended Motorway on a gravel bike, but I've seen riders post rides down Motorway on a gravel bike and post videos and from memory, it's not as chunky as Maple; however, tire choice would be VERY important as Motorway is covered in "baby head" rocks. Others may be able to weigh-in on Motorway as a realistic option to Maple. I plan on riding Motorway again when it opens on my MTB to see what I think. Most riders do Blackstar Motorway as a loop, but Harding-Motorway is about the same elevation, maybe ~ 500 feet or so more.
I guess it's that stigma to do a loop, rather than an out and back, although it would be a new perspective on Harding. I imagine I'll do more of those roads when they reopen.
Gutted, seeing this area burn. I rode all these routes, many, many times. And when--in the late '90s--I rode them on my Salsa CX bike, shod with 34mm Tufo Tubulars...it blew the minds of all the MTB riders. Great to see this route featured; it will come back from the fire...it always does.
@@riclamoureux sadly, it's not a matter of if, but when these fires come..
@@GravelBikeCalifornia True, and they're getting worse
@riclamoureux yeah. I understand that it's part of the natural process, but the frequency...
Bummed i missed it
Looks like the area is closed at least until next October...
I am going to do this ride on xmas eve to earn xmas dinner. I love descending from ridgecrest to the dam on a gravel bike, so much fun
Hopefully it'll soften up by then..
Gravelstoke dude here. It's great to see this one finally go up! I often think about how lucky we were to ride this before it all dried out and before all the fires hit. I grinded this one out on the mountain bike. This climb humbled me! It does just keep going up and up. Crazy views though! The descent was rough. The canyon was beautiful. This ride really made me work for it! Not everyone was thrilled with the route, but I say it brings a sense of adventure. It's definitely a ride that I will remember positively! Great content as always. You're always giving me rides to add to my to-do list here!
In most other states, this one would really stick out. It just shows what great options we have at our disposal.
Epic. This was my first "gravel" ride, back in 2010, took my road bike on 23f25r mm tires, from Irvine Spectrum to Maple Springs, up to both peaks, down the same way, with a stop at Cook's Corner, and back to Irvine Spectrum via Whiting Ranch. Going up was fine - just grind at my own pace, but coming back down I was on the brakes so hard that I couldn't move or feel my hands and wrists for a few hours afterwards. The time I went, Maple Springs was gated to cars so I had the mountain to myself. Thanks for posting your experience with this video - really helps me re-live the adventure/misery 😄
Since the video, I've gone from 45s to 55s with a suspension seat post. I am curious how I would have handled Maple Springs now, but I do wish I had it closed to cars like you did.
Awesome! I’ve done parts of this ride but not this specific route… for sure on my next visit to OC.
Make sure to check the Cleveland National Forest webpage for closures, as it still isn't open as of press time...
Great day of adventure learning that I can never have enough water!
We were near the breaking point.
Great overlay map showing the burn zone and route, very helpful to see what was impacted.

Great spot to live.
Excellent. Been to most of these same places and go to Scouts all the time for the best cookies ever.
I should have tried. I normally take down a few cookies from Apple Farm on my visits.
Epic 3 part series and ride, congrats.
...and yes, I hope you can give it a go.
Nice to see your video. I’ve been mapping rides in this area for while. Either as a local loop, Eureka to Leggett, then bus back from Leggett to Eureka. Or, through ride down the 101/1. Nice video.
I think there is now a bus from Ukiah to Eureka that allows bikes, but you have to reserve.

Great video. Welcome to my home of Fairfax. Love each of those trails. Have spent years riding them. And Bo-Fax road is my daily commute home in my work truck. One of the best parts of each day. And how could you come to Fairfax without going to G Haus. Even saw Ruffin working in the kitchen put a smile on my face Your editing and commentary was spot on. Cheers And please do come again.
Thanks much. You're lucky to live around so many great trails and places to fancy.
Nice video and brought back memories since I rode that area many years ago. I remember this one part struggling to pedal yet the road looked like it was going downhill (why can’t I go fast?) but really was going uphill. The whole area looks the same.
That's good to hear. Sometimes the surface changes, but the scenery is more timeless.
As a long-time bicycle tourist, I was always looking for the smoothest roads, looking to reduce the watts I expended so I could go farther and preserve the health of my bike, - and then there are mountain-bikers and trail riders: always on the roughest, most bone-shaking bicycle-abusive trails, which suck out so many watts of energy as one rides, it has to be one of the least effective ways of traveling. Why? I could never understand the trend other than videos of the activity made it look amusing. It definitely doesn't feel amusing, esp. when the vibrations can knock screws loose, possibly stranding you in the middle of nowhere with a fractured rear dropout or some other non-repairable damage. I would rather hike such trails, it would likely be more efficient and pleasant. When I am on a bicycle, I do not want to waste my energy as one does on a mountain bike or some other fat-tired bike.
Maybe it was the Lauf fork, but I didn't have any big issues with the surface. Would probably be a different story going down.
@@GravelBikeCalifornia Exactly! Although uphills slow one down anyway due to the grade, on the downhill to keep from killing yourself or the bicycle one needs to blow away all that potential energy from the climb in the form of breaking, and slaloming around or in bouncing off of rocks. And in the video I saw plenty of deep gullies which are death on downhills. The entire off-road mode is incredibly energy inefficient. I can see how it's not an issue for a short day ride, but if one is on a long tour and wants to make it 100 miles from point A to point B, day after day, it would be really taxing. Although one of my bikes is a fully shocked fat tired (4") bike, I dislike the rough dirt roads so much, I can't even stand 5 miles on gravel on it, and 99% of the time I ride my fat tired bike on roadways. I never intentionally ride on dirt roads, but oddly sometimes Google Maps will route bicycles on such roads, and I haven't figured out how to have it filter these roads out without simply using the "automobile" filter for routing rather than the bicycle filter.
Another great one. I take my camper van to Sam Taylor all the time and ride these trails which always feels like hallowed (if not bumpy) ground. Thanks!
Kinda funny it's not champagne gravel, but yet was the place mountain biking got started..
Start in Sausalito, hit the Headlands, go over Tam, take Panaramic Hwy to Bolinas Ridge and then add San Geronimo Ridge before heading back to the start and you’ve got yourself a really nasty ride. One of the best I’ve done.
Years ago I actually worked in San Rafael, but wasn't into biking at the time. Now I'm still learning about all these trails.
