Thank you for this series….. from a fan of 35 of those 40 years. I missed the first 5. We didn’t get Anthrax in Alabama until 1986. Right after paved roads and indoor plumbing.
Not sure. He seems to be the kind of guy that does not have the self esteem to admit shit he's done. So he keeps on pretending he was cool. Whatever, he is history. And Joey B fronted the band that broke worldwide.
Great story and great to hear Danny ' Boy' Lilker being so cool, humble and forgiving and getting along with the Anthrax! Well everyone are in fact and that's heartwarming to see and hear! Anthrax rules!
Agreed, but he was also in S.O.D. with Charlie and Scott and I think Speak English or Die outsold anything Anthrax ever did. They didn't tour much though.
@@creamysauce7966 Speak English or Die went platinum. Don't think any Anthrax album did that. I know Thrax had way more total sales, just talking about that one album.
@@daerth4423 Anthrax I'm The Man EP went platinum as well. But SOD, to Scott and Charlie was just a side project, unfortunately. I love both bands but Anthrax is my main :D
My first Anthrax album was the “I’m The Man” EP, and I bought it along with a bunch of other tapes from a record club based solely on the cover images. All music I’d never heard. I got Savatage “Hall of The Mountain King”, Depeche Mode “Black Celebration”, The Smiths “Louder Than Bombs”, Megadeth “Peace Sells...”, a bunch of different music. Then I went back and got the other Anthrax albums, my favorites being “Armed and Dangerous” and “Spreading The Disease”. Joey’s super melodic classic rock voice on top of those crunching guitars and cool energetic rhythms was just unlike anything else I’d heard before. Thanks for 40 years, Anthrax!
Ha ha, so, ok, I just listened to Fistful Of Metal for the first time in... 30 (?) years again. I even have the CD. Metal Thrashing Mad and Death From Above are my favs. Though the band won me over with Armed And Dangerous and (finally!) Joey Belladonna. Wonderful to go back in time like this.
Great series. I remember buying Fistful when I was a wee teen just getting into metal music. I think I got Spreading the Disease first...then went backwards. Then shortly thereafter I got Kill 'Em All...mind blown...never looked back. Still listen to early Anthrax!!! Just saw them a few years back...missed a show with them and KIllswitch due to double booking. Hoping to see them again some day.
Well, I'll be damned. It IS a right and left hand on the cover! Scott's gotta rewrite that section in his book now. Tough break, Scotty. LOVING this series!
F*kn love this! Thrax is def in my top 3 bands. I try not to miss a show when they’re around. They hardly ever come up short live. I’m not baseball guy, but I gotta get one of their jerseys one of these days.
dear charlie i just want to let u know as a forty five year old british punk inspired by you as a drummer since 85 i just released my first solo video called crime ork depression drive video always antisocial bless u boys x
Damn…… this takes me back to buying records from new bands I never heard of…… I bought this one solely on the album artwork…… bonus was the music….. thanks for the trip through memory lane…..
I am loving these videos. Didn’t get into Anthrax until around the end of Among/I’m the Man but love hearing about the beginning/pre-Joey years. And Danny rules! Just can’t see Anthrax turning grindcore, so maybe it was all the best for everyone ;)
So glad they talked about the logo. Was so fucking fun to draw. I still write my name in all sharp caps because of doodling Anthrax so much as a teen. Even scratched it in my arm, lol. I can still hear my Sicilian dad "you desecrate you body". Off to see Father Petrillo again for me, lol. I was one of the only chicks in Bayonne, NJ listening to Anthrax (and S.O.D.) and King Diamond and not BonJovi. Edit: For all you Jersey people, yeah, yeah "if it smells like Bayonne, leave it alone" - I've heard it before.
I'm loving this series. Singers can be complete prima donnas, but they can also make or break a band. After hearing the latest Mr. Bungle record, I can't help but think what might have been if Mike Patton joined after Joey left instead of John Bush.
I wouldn't change anything on that album cover. The pink logo is ok, no need to act out. As far as the music goes, I put it on the same place as the other ones. Dig the vocals, riffs, cover, everything. I just don't remember if I ever ignored it like those guys. Also, KIMB is fucking great too. Also love Sound of White Noise, my favorite one.
I remember Scott stoped the show in Chicago "ok the point of stage diving is not run around and say hey mommy look at me, you get on the stage you dive off the stage" lmao. never seen a better pit.... POINT as a fan and a musician, and the fact the day after I was born you where a millennial, You are one of my favorite drummers, and not as a metalhead, I meaN your up there with Buddy Rich and Ginger Baker. And with out John singing well, dude I love Joie, but when I was a kid, I hated high pitch singing lol but as a writer, I still loved it like maiden..... It was bad ass.....
I have a feeling maybe that we are not really getting the whole story with Danny…there is some dark shit going on. You don’t kick a friend out of a band over a bit of ball busting, We need full disclosure…lol
Such a frikkin shame about Lilker. Imagine what his song writing contribution going forward could’ve been. I love Bello’s playing but I believe he didn’t write as much?
00:30 The awful cover on Fist Full Of Metal isnt because of the angle of the hands or arms or anything.. it is just bad art period. Whichever artist painted that cover was worse than amateur.. Such a turn off to get so excited about a band and then the cover art looks like some 12 year old drew it. Bad art concept, bad art execution. Make fun of Danzig's "copy-hand tracing" art skills as much as you want, his first Danzig album had an absolutely killer cover with deathly style.

I love how they actually admit they did Lilker wrong and let Turbin and Lilker add commentary to the situation.
No mention of greg walls being done wrong though
Although Joey is my favourite Anthrax singer, still all due respect and credit to fistful of metal

Whoo! Episode 3, more greatness!!!
Firing Danny may have been an idiocy but it gave us Nuclear Assault and Brutal Truth, so we can pardon your bad decision.
💀Stormtroopers of Death💀

Nuclear Assault 🤟
S.O.D.
Sounds like Danny is a lot more mature about his firing than Mustaine is about his.
i think that's what he himself alluded to at the end when he says only an a$shole would still be mad after so many years
🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻
The problem is the singers. Tell them straight away at the beginning : for one album, only !
Uh..mike patton!!!
Dan Lilker would have been a good replacement for Cliff Burton after he died IMO.
Hmm interesting, I always heard Neil didn't like Lilker because Lilker was a pothead and Neil was an anti drug person.
