- This final movement from Schütz Funeral Music for Heinrich II of Reuss is an astonishing juxtaposition of the texts of the Nunc Dimittis, sung by a five-part choir of lower voices, and the words of Selig sind die toten (‘Blessed are the dead’) taken by a trio of soloists representing the ‘beata anima’ or ‘blessed soul’ on its journey to the afterlife. Schütz specifically requests that this trio be spatially separated from the main group and also includes dynamic effects in the lower-voice choir, with ‘fortiter’ and ‘submisse’ markings intended to imitate echoes, showing a keen awareness of use of space as a tool to add dramatic weight to the message of the music and text.

Ganz hervorragend gesungen und musiziert! Genau so wollte der 50-jährige Schütz die Ausführung der Beerdigungsmusik für seinen Landesherrn ausgeführt wissen! Das grosse Ensemble sollte die trauernde Gemeinde darstellen und das kleine Ensemble, die beatae anime, sollte am Sarg mit den ausgewählten Bibelsprüchen stehen...Auch die Besetzung der Continuogruppe ist perfekt!!!
Anzumerken ist noch, dass Heinrich Posthumus Reuss die Bibelsprüche für seinen Sarg selbst ausgewählt hatte. Er war wohl auch ein guter Bariton, denn Schütz hat seine Stimme nochmals als Männerstimme in dem Solo-Trio erklingen lassen. Das war zu der damaligen Zeit ein üblicher Brauch, bei der Beerdigung nochmals die Stimme des Toten zu können.
Schütz hat die Exequien als Kapellmeister selbst geleitet!!
Die Exequien ist eines der vollkommensten geistlichen Werke in unserer musikalischen Tradition. Ich habe es oft gesungen, am Schluss waren wir immer sehr ergriffen. Diese Aufführung hier ist die schönste und vollkommenste Aufnahme, die ich kenne. Sie lassen eine Musik ertönen, als ob sie vom Himmel käme. Dazu das wunderbare Ambiente...

There’s a bit of Schutz I heard immediately on the Avatar soundtrack. The French adapted one of his melodies to a hymn.
Unsure if it’s from him but for sure it sounds like it heavy.

Perhaps. It is hard to to keep it together in that acoustical environment, and that may be the reason. Many other recordings are indeed a little faster, and I also prefer that. But it is an excellent performance regardless!
