The Marian Consort, directed by Rory McCleery
TEXT
Like as the hart desires the water-brooks: so longs my soul after you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, yea, even for the living God: when shall I come to appear before the presence of God? My tears have been my meat day and night: while they daily say unto me, Where is now thy God?

The complexity and beauty of Palestrina's counterpoint compositions are exquisite! ❤
One of the most beautiful pieces ever composed. What God in music sounds like to me.
I believe this is the best version on UA-cam
Truly magnificent! Listening and singing pieces by master composers like Palestrina has allowed me to experience and connect with the Divine/Creator/God. Musical compositions like these allow us human beings to transcend this mortal realm and connect with something much greater than ourselves. Hopefully we are able to remember and retain some of that experience and keep it in our hearts as we live and interact with one another in this temporal world.
The two pieces are Sicut Cervus and Sitivit Anima mea which is a continuation of the first. This my favorite Psalm of the Bible and my two favorite motets of Palestrina
Which Psalms are they?
@@Cool_boy258 Psalm 42 verses 1 through 3
I agree with you, my favourite psalm and motet.
I've performed this quite a few times in the last 50 years and can only say that I wish I'd had this group to perform it with. Excellent performance. Perfect ensemble of the voices and balance of the parts. Bravo.
I've also sang it many times, the intonation throughout is spot on, balance is almost perfect, maybe the top notes of sopranos could be softer in places, but for the most part the sopranos give space to the men's parts for this piece.
Ditto! This has always been one of my favorite of Palestrina’s works, and when you listen to this group sing it, you can really feel the warmth and comfort that he was trying so beautifully to convey! Absolutely stunning! And I actually like the balance as it is with the sop just a touch on top of everything else, as it gives context to the other lines without interfering with them. Brilliant music by brilliant musicians! ❤
the breath support was immaculate. goosebumps!
Voces escogidas, claras y excelsas para este motete inestimable de Palestrina. Exquisita emisión de las mismas. Actuación magistral y admirable. "Sicut cervus" preciosa partitura.
Fantastici meraviglia pura meritate l..olimpo degli deiiiiii.
Sicut Cervus is one of the first choral works that I absolutely fell in love with. This is an absolutely exquisite performance, and has such a spiritually moving quality to it. Splendid, bravo!
I'm Crying.
Sydney Australia Advent Thursday 15th December 2022.
Palestrina Bless our Young Country.
Amen Amen
What can I say.. no words, but just tears from my eyes came from hearing such beauty. Thanks.
Incredibly beautiful voices,,,,truly the sounds of Heaven ,,,,and everlasting life ,,,, and peace.
nagyon jó muszika, teccik a drop
Sicut cervus/sitivit anima mea is one of my favourie motets from Easter Vigil :) Palestrina was a musical genius! Absolutely stunning performance! Beautiful voices
I've been so blessed to be able to sing this in a very good choir.
Great performance of this piece in the perfect tempo, huge compliment!
South Africa, amazingly blended voices. U would bet it is a whole choir singing yet sung by almost a double quartet Beautiful music . Just tearing
Lindíssimo!! Por alguns minutos a gente tem a sensação de estar no Céu...
Palestrina wäre und ich bin sicher, ist tief berührt, wie gesungen, musiziert. Ich bin es jedenfalls.
Mellifluous in the extreme......
Very well done. Polyphonic perfection.
I recently saw the Alto perfoming De Victoria "O magnum misterium" in another ensemble.
The ultimate Christmas hymn.
What a delight to hear all the parts so beautifully woven together. I am so focused a on alto I had no clue how magnificent this is.
Helen Charleston.

PROFOUND THANKS TO THE MARIAN CONSORT FOR ONE OF THE MOST FANTASTIC MUSICAL EXPERIENCES OF MY LIFE.
We had the transformational, transcendent experience of hearing them perform in Duke chapel in Durham, NC a few months ago.
I don't know if the Consort had previously performed in Duke Chapel -- but the director seemed very pleased with the venue, the acoustics, and the very enthusiastic reception they received. Guessing he may not have known quite what to expect to find in North Carolin...
WHY did we stop performing music like this?
I can only describe the experience as being like lying on soft grass under big leafy trees on a pleasantly warm day with the sunlight flickering gently over your face. It was THE most relaxing experience and put both my husband and I in truly "altered state" -- as if we were meditating.
It was beyond calming and healing.
When they broke for intermission, we both opened our eyes and blinked at each other -- we'd honestly emerged from the most beautiful trance.
If you're seeking a calming, mind-altering, healing experience -- I'd strongly suggest playing recordings of early Renaissance music by the Marian Consort before you pay money for "substances"!
BTW: you do not have to be knowledgeable or familiar with this genre of music to love hearing the Consort. And the explanations that were provided for the pieces -- why they were interesting/different/breakthroughs in their day, etc. were excellent and helped our "untrained ears" appreciate them much more!
So beautiful. Harmonies on harmonies.. what and arrangement! Amazing
Piękne wykonanie. Dziękuję! :)

This is lovely - and such a useful rehearsal aid for tonight's Evensong :-) I'm so looking forward to being conducted by Rory this summer in Edinburgh.
Wunderschöne Musik mit allerbester Qualität präsentiert!
Vielen Dank!🌹😘🌹😘🌹😘🌹
👍😎🇦🇹
Beautiful.
Sadness strikes
Wonderful performance.
I recall one of my college "professors" insisted that Palestrina was the worst composer ever because his counterpoint was always perfect.
His idea of the greatest composer? Charles Wuorinen.
Two words: intangibly beautiful.
Absolutely super!
Wonderful performance of a beautiful piece by Palestrina. Very well done.
Thank you for the blessings this music convey.
This is glorious music. What beautiful singing!!! Thank you
Perfect blend of voices for such a beautiful work.
Sublime!❤❤❤
What a lovely version.
Beautiful performance of this gem.
♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Excellent rendition. Why is the group called Marian Consort?
I am so stunned by this beautiful music.A huge thank you to this group for their wonderful performance.Palestrina has some extraordinary music ! Really lovely.
Heaven
So relax. Perfect tempo. Bravo!
Thank you for this. Glorious. I can't imagine it improved.
"Comme le cerf altéré cherche l'eau vive, ainsi mon âme te cherche, Ô toi mon Dieu!"
Un de mes psaumes préférés, qui permet d'apercevoir un peu la poésie originale qui se perd inévitablement dans la traduction.
Io so della grandezza di Palestrina, ma ogni volta che lo ascolto automaticamente vengo trasportato in Paradiso; poi quando ci sono dei cori così Meravigliosi vado in Estasi......Bravissimi Tutti ❤️✨🇮🇹
As the former Dean of Guilford Cathedral once said: "I love Palestrina, it makes the hairs on your bum stand up".
Magical!
Why I had no idea...that there's more this piece than meets the ear, if you will, since...most groups do only the first part which ends somewhere's around 2:25. 2:26, or thereabouts, but anyhow,,,THANI YOU!!!...THANK YOU!!!..THANK YOU!!!!
Lol. We would use this as a test for conductors. Conduct in 4, you fail. Conduct in 2, you pass!
This was a long time ago - Eamonn Dougan looks about 12!
Beautiful Singing. Beautiful People. But where is the this beautiful church?
How can it be sung better than this?
The top voice(s) could be better overtones for the lower voices. That’s one way. The soprano (whether it’s tone or vowel) sags ever-so-slightly under pitch and therefore we’re not getting the beautiful overtones when everything is harmonizing correctly.
@@amandasteven9549 Dear Amanda: Here, I am in an amateur quartet. We have Sicut Cervus in our repertoire. Please, do not come to make the review to us! :D
Beautiful singing of this fine work by Palestrina. Could you please list the singers names in your videos? Some I know but not all of them. Thank you. 🙂
Beautiful. As ALWAYS. Just a pity the alto leads (and significant passages) seem to have been overlooked in the editing. A niggle, I accept!!
3:09
I hate that UA-cam credits this to The Sixteen! What an insult to these fine performers who have interpreted in their own way.
I bet those singer's don't need the conductor to be waving his arms around. He should just join them.
1:22 without the leading note quite confusing (i don't know the sources though)
This remains an open question, while checking the various sources available. It has to do with the so-called "musica ficta".
I agree that d on tenors should be natural...it sounds so strange as flat (original key Ab)
A quien le gusta esta" pedazo de canción??"
1:21 wrong note? Should be half step up
The alto balance is amazing!
Nitpick: I'd love the voices to be further away from the microphones. It's so close, I'm hearing more grit than sonority
Can hardly hear the bass part.
Am I the only person hearing the soprano flatting? This is in Ab Major and she sounds like she’s defaulting to G Major a fair amount…
I noticed too. We're being very demanding because they have a great ensemble sound and she's got an amazing voice.
lol no...they are slightly flat but not offensive...I heard worst
Pitch perfects in here...please let us be 😅lol
Folks aren't you thankful you are not barbarians? But can appreciate sacred polyphony?
Piękne wykonanie. Dziękuję! :)
