"Liar" was named the 64th best hard rock song of all time by VH1. It was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance. Rollins Band performed the song at the 37th Grammy Awards Ceremony.
"Liar" is a song by Rollins Band and the lead single from their fourth full-length album, Weight, released in 1994. It was the album's only charting single and is one of the group's best known songs.
Upon release, the "Liar" video gained heavy airplay on MTV. This led to it appearing as part of the Beavis and Butt-head episode "Liar! Liar!", which aired on July 15, 1994. In the episode, Beavis becomes excited about the chorus, repeating the word "Liar!" in the same way he typically says "Fire! Fire! Fire!". Butt-head comes to the conclusion that "lying rules."
The video edit of "Liar" was featured in the song's music video and features a different vocal track and slightly different lyrics in the opening section. The song's lyrics are from the perspective of a serial liar who alternates between declarations of sympathy and friendship on the one hand, then repeatedly gloating celebrations of his deceptions. Directed by Anton Corbijn, the video itself features alternating depictions of vocalist Henry Rollins. During the song's verses, he wears glasses and a plain black T-shirt and speaks in a calm, soothing tone about trust and friendship; from one verse to the next, his arms and face become increasingly stained with black paint. For the chorus segments, he is shirtless and painted red, wildly jumping and flailing about as he screams derisively at his audience for believing his lies. He is also seen dressed in a Superman parody costume, a police officer uniform, and a nun's habit.

    Rollins Band - Liar Lyrics
You think you're going to live your life alone
In darkness and seclusion... Yeah, I know
You've been out there and tried to mix with those animals
And it just left you full of humiliated confusion
So you stagger back home and wait for nothing
But the solitary refinement of your room spits you back onto the streets
And now you're desperate and in need of human contact
And then you meet me and your whole world changes
Because everything I say is everything you've ever wanted to hear
So you drop all you defenses, and you drop all your fears
    I'm perfect in every way
'Cause I make you feel so strong and so powerfull inside
    You feel so lucky
But your ego obscures reality but you never bothered to
Wonder why things are going so well
    You want to know why?
    'Cause I'm a liar, yeah, I'm a liar
I'll tear your mind out, I'll burn your soul
I'll turn you into me, I'll turn you into me
    'Cause I'm a liar, a liar, a liar, a liar, a liar...
I'll hide behind a smile and understanding eyes
And I'll tell you things that you already know so you can say:
I really identify with you, so much
And all the time that you're needing me is just the time
That I'm bleeding you, don't you get it yet?
I'll come to you like an affliction then I'll leave you like an addiction
You'll never forget me... You wanna know why?
    'Cause I'm a liar, yeah, I'm a liar,
I'll rip your mind out, I'll burn your soul,
I'll turn you into me, I'll turn you into me,
'Cause I'm a liar, a liar, liar, liar, liar, liar...
I don't know why I feel the need to lie and cause you so much pain
Maybe it's something inside, maybe it's something I can't explain
'Cause all I do is mess you up and lie to you
    I'm a liar, ooooh, I'm a liar
But if you'll give me another chance I swear I'll never lie to you again
'Cause now I see the destructive power of a lie,
    They're stronger than truth
I can't believe I ever hurt you, I swear I will never lie to you again, please
Just give me one more chance, I'll never lie to you again, no,
I swear, I will never tell a lie, I will never tell a lie, no, no
Ha ha ha ha ha, ho ho ho! Sucker! Sucker! Ooooh sucker!
I am a liar, yeah, I am a liar, yeah, I like it,
I feel good, ooooh I am a liar... Yeah
    I lie, I lie, I lie, ooh I lie, I lie, yeah,
Oooooh I'm a liar, I lie, yeah, I like it, I feel good,
I'll lie again, and again, I'll lie again and again and I'll keep lying,
    I promise... Ha ha ha

This is the best song about narcissistic manipulation ever written. Henry Rollins hit the nail on the head when describing narcissistic abuse, the gaslighting, the projecting, and stonewalling.

People's talking about personal relationships and I see Rollins as a cop, as a nun, as a Superhero and as some kind of guru, The system in its obvious reppresive image, catholic religion, media, opportunist...I think the meaning of this song goes way beyond that kind of odd people that hurt us because of what we feel for them. I think it's about what capitalism could do to us.

I watched this. Realized my girlfriend had been lying & manipulating me for years. I showed her this video of a song I discovered. She disappeared the next day. Called the cops & said I was inundating her with texts & though I hadn’t at all, I just randomly got a call from them so I couldn’t contact her. &She was out of my life. She stole things on her way out, $600 in cash which was quite more in 2019 than now. Tons of family heirlooms that are worthless to her but she knew I loved. She was a liar.

This song reminds me of my ex so much. She was my first girlfriend at 20 and the only woman I ever fell on love with. Exactly for all the reasons described in the lyrics. A painful lesson that unfortunately made me very weary of any of my other girlfriends' intentions. Not to the point of sabotage, but to the point where my defenses never fell back down.

I saw them once in Glasgow in 1994. The only memories I have of that gig are Henry taking the piss out of the hecklers. At one point, he looked at one down the front and said to him 'if I don't beat you, he will', pointing to one of the bouncers.

What a mindfu*k. You probably just needed kind, patient help on your homework. Instead you got mindfuc*ed by your dear old dad. The hypocrisy of him and the irony of it all. Glad you realize now that he was just projecting some bs onto you. You were just kid and you didn't deserve that. No kid deserves to be disparaged and mocked.
