Damn, that's awesome. I remember listening to Pretty Hate Machine as a 19 year old kid in summer of 1990. We used to hit the after hours clubs in Philly and they would play that industrial shit. I am glad that I was able to live through those times.
Rehearsal footage for this tour. So amazing. I was fortunate to see them in '94. And they're still one of the best live bands ever. Oh, and Chris Vrenna will always be my favorite NIN drummer.
Here is a fun fact: This isn't rehearsal footage at all for the tour. This is the actual music video itself stylised like a rehearsal video - because the band are playing live just like a rehearsal. The played the song 16 times in a row and picked the best performance. Trent Reznor talks about this when he guest host RAGE in early 2000's.
I remember watching this video on MTV when it first came out. I already loved NIN but when I saw this I was like "Holy fucking shitballs"! I ran out and bought this CD soon as it came out. Listening to the downward spiral on headphones to this very day is one of the most moving and intense music experiences of my entire life. The ambient layers and overall sound design created something unmatched to this very day. This album is a masterpiece. To be honest, every single NIN album is. Trent Reznor is one of my true artistic heros.
I saw them during The Downward Spiral tour with Marlyn Mansion (before they were famous) & The Jim Rose Circus Sideshow. It was 10 times better than any show I’ve ever seen, & I’m not even a big fan. They went absolutely nuts (similar to this video), he smashed so many keyboards, so much equipment, tossing the mic stand (the drummer has been hospitalized for being hit in the head with it), plus he grabbed the curtain when they first came out, lifted himself 10 feet in the air, and dropped all the way to the stage floor (I couldn’t believe he could walk). To a kid from VA, in middle school, it was the awesomest thing I’d seen, & didn’t feel contrived. It felt exciting like going to an old punk rock show. We had such a BLAST!
Reading this, shall we understand they have no real spontaneity, everything is calculated, like a smokescreen, they are acting their own pseudo-decadence, peudo-torment...??? 18 takes to throw a mic "the good way", what a pity... @@doraanaisnin5199 the time signature is basically 29/8, that is, 3 bars in 7/8 plus one in 4/4; and yet, to the hearer the song doesn’t seem exceptionally complicated: that’s what’s really amazing, Reznor’s ability to make complex stuff look simple (and, in this case, with a sorta “punch in the face” attitude
A long time ago, ~1999 or so, I was a table server at The Springfield Grille (really good food) in NE, Ohio. I waited on this super nice couple. Real salt of the earth, normal as can be folks; they were Trent Reznor's parents. That's it. That's the post.
here's my version of that: touring the USA as a musician, and we stayed at the Detroit home of Jack White's cousin and aunt, and she had the box and molded foam inside of Jack's grammy, ha ha! Cute. Oh, how did you know they were Trent's parents?
I got one! My ex-ex-ex girlfriend from 15 years ago was at a gas station in Langley, British Columbia (where we lived at the time). She went into the station to get a Redbull, and Chad Kroeger of Nickleback was there talking to a very young girl, under 16 for sure. My ex listened briefly and heard him invite her to a party that night, to which she responded, "Oh my god, amazing, I would love to but let me ask my parents first!" and then she bolted from the store presumably looking for her parents. Kroeger was spooked, so he bolted from the store just as fast, got into a sport's car and left.
For the first time, I'm insanely jealous of a waiter's career (if true). Also, I'm not at all surprised that the parents of Trent would be legit nice. But I'm actually a little confused because I read he was raised by his grandparents and that the death of his grandfather was the inspiration for "The Day The Whole World Went Away". Maybe some better enlightened fan than I can explain the family situation. (Although I try to keep my nose out of the private business of celebrities I actually respect.)
I got the Closure 2 set VHS set on my 11th Christmas, it was a long time ago! I remember getting it handed to me and just being in awe that such a thing could exist! (the box art looked top notch) and i went off into my room for the night. This video brings back the memories as i must have watched it a zillion times. I remember seeing Happiness in Slavery for the first time and being shocked, had to show it to my pals and leme say it was heavy lol! Thanks to ultra violence it was a good x-mas
I love how this looks so " spontaneous " yet there´s hardly a nano second of spontaneity in this from the Director´s perspective : this was simply the way the great Peter " Sleazy " Christopherson perceived the band , the way he directed not only the video , but the direction the band would takefor the next few years , which made them a Monolith of Industrial rock in the USA ( worldwide even ) . RIP Sleazy .

You have a band "performing" and acting out in a nice controlled environment, complete with assistants that reapply make-up to maintain the "proper aesthetic" and who quickly pick up thrown microphones so as to not miss the next verse. Looks like the psychoactive drugs he is on are pretty potent TOO lol
This video is so badass. That mic toss is still epic.
U my fren, i like
This song and it's music video are permanently etched into my brain. Nine Inch Nails was my first introduction to heavier music, and they will always hold a special place in my heart.
They did so many takes. I love how Reznor gives up and says fuck it. And the chick talks him into continuing and they shove the mic into his hand and thats the one they used. Everyone on set was passed and tired
This is epic if true
Makes me kind of wish that the video had been directed by Stanley Kubrick, this would have been take 53 out of 700
@@alexlight4178 it's actually quite impressive how many iconic moments in history were ACCIDENTS or such.
heck, I even point out to ppl that Led Zeppelin, the Beatles and all the other greats were ACCIDENTS in time!
EX:
if Zep or Pink Floyd were NOT ACCIDENTS....then why do they all make shittier music SOLO and in other bands? (EX: The FIRM would be as great as Zep, if it was the MUSICIANS' TALENT AND SKILL, see?)
WHY were all their PRE-fame bands not brilliant?
EX:
HOW did we get the iconic image of rock star without a shirt or the shirt is open? A: stage lights were SUPER-HOT and every performer would sweat. (A Sinatra doesn't exert himself unlike a Zeppelin!)
That has been eliminated from live performance today!
PLEASE LET COVID REMOVE THE HUMANS! THANKS!
If you've ever "tripped" before you'd know that at SOME point you'll reach a place where NOTHING matters anymore ... I THINK he was bordering THIS type of mindset during THIS appearance ... I've been doing it since i was 15 and NOW at 49 have grown tons of psilocybin mushrooms ... I've also played guitar ( among many other instruments) for the same timeframe.... I CAN'T remember ALL the times we just reached THAT point of "fuck it ... It don't even matter ... Nothing does anymore) .... I personally like it because i STOP feeling emotion momentarily ... But for others it's hell and they feel" paralyzed " by the helplessness feeling that usually accompanies it ... And for the majority of people it's just TOO MUCH so they actually "disconnect" with THEIR OWN reality and just laugh hysterically like a lunatic for several hours completely incapacitated by the REAL TRUTH that THEY are not ready or willing to accept .... I'll almost guarantee he was tripping "balls" lol....

His drumming here amazing 👍
It was also pretty cool when Chris Vrenna went off to make the amazing soundtrack to American McGee's Alice
Here is a fun fact:
This isn't rehearsal footage at all for the tour. This is the actual music video itself stylised like a rehearsal video - because the band are playing live just like a rehearsal. The played the song 16 times in a row and picked the best performance. Trent Reznor talks about this when he guest host RAGE in early 2000's.
Chris is underrated. Not sure why more people dont know about his side project tweaker.
I saw that same lineup on that tour. Talk about an eye opening experience for a couple of high school freshman!
Saw the same tour, new years eve 1994. What a way to bring in a new year.
Snape's youth was far more exciting than the books led us to believe.
This is a highly underappreciated comment.
Yeah, no question. This comment wins. Hahahaha
This is the spice for which i watch NiN on UA-cam.
This made laugh awkward in public
Theee years ago i was on this tirade of bad/low quality memes bec i made the same conection lol.
Trent said they did about 18 takes of performing this song and picked the best one for the video. I’d love to see the other 17 takes please.
Reading this, shall we understand they have no real spontaneity, everything is calculated, like a smokescreen, they are acting their own pseudo-decadence, peudo-torment...??? 18 takes to throw a mic "the good way", what a pity...
Look Bauhaus here, at 2'23 real mic throw, live, no smokescreen...
ua-cam.com/video/jPnKsv58s6U/v-deo.html
What a real live performance!
What on earth are you talking about? Music videos, films, shorts, what have you, of course you'll have multiple takes to choose from. It has nothing to do with whether the action is spontaneous or not.
@@biocykle For this kind of simple musical performance 5 takes should be far enough but 18 ?????
@@fredtrax4574 well if you're fucked up and acting crazy yeah I would say 18 takes sounds about right lol
@@Saiege With 50 takes they would obviously make a better video. Even 2 times better with 100 takes...
Anyone who’s been to an NIN gig will know that the true heroes are the guys looking after Trent’s microphones
The director of this video was Peter Christopherson, founding member of both Throbbing Gristle and Coil and basically invented industrial music.
Yeah, but, this isn't Industrial, so now what?

Trent Reznor was not even 30 years old when he wrote this masterpiece album..just for the record..remembering when I saw them live for the first time, this was 3rd song they played..I was left, really left front watching ...I found out myself in front of
Great vocal performance!
And general performances.
if you understand a bit of music theory, this song, as most of Trent Reznor's songs, is astounding.
Explain
@@doraanaisnin5199 the time signature is basically 29/8, that is, 3 bars in 7/8 plus one in 4/4; and yet, to the hearer the song doesn’t seem exceptionally complicated: that’s what’s really amazing, Reznor’s ability to make complex stuff look simple (and, in this case, with a sorta “punch in the face” attitude
One of my favorites by Reznor to this day. Live he is one of best I've seen besides Nick Cave and A Perfect Circle.
A long time ago, ~1999 or so, I was a table server at The Springfield Grille (really good food) in NE, Ohio. I waited on this super nice couple. Real salt of the earth, normal as can be folks; they were Trent Reznor's parents. That's it. That's the post.
here's my version of that:
touring the USA as a musician, and we stayed at the Detroit home of Jack White's cousin and aunt, and she had the box and molded foam inside of Jack's grammy, ha ha! Cute.
Oh, how did you know they were Trent's parents?
Doubtful. They're divorced.
Wow!!!
Love this song. First concert I ever went to was this tour in Sacramento. It also makes me think of Leslie Chow.
Love this video so much. I love the setting, the sound, everyone looks so freaking beautiful.
Such a great song and video. I dont know why I love when he throws or drops the mic 🎤.
I love the rage in this song.
man, this really was something else! as a teen I just couldn't wrap my head around that strange rhythm.
One of my all time favourite drum grooves to play🤟
I got the Closure 2 set VHS set on my 11th Christmas, it was a long time ago! I remember getting it handed to me and just being in awe that such a thing could exist! (the box art looked top notch) and i went off into my room for the night.
This video brings back the memories as i must have watched it a zillion times. I remember seeing Happiness in Slavery for the first time and being shocked, had to show it to my pals and leme say it was heavy lol!
Thanks to ultra violence it was a good x-mas
Still have my VHS set. Only VHS I kept! Though, I have no way to watch it presently. Heh...

Love her girly babydoll dresses while singing in screaming vocals. So awesome and she's too cute in this video.

THE FIRST TIME WE WATCHED THIS VIDEO IN 94, WAS THE BEGINNING OF A JOURNEY , THAT VERY FEW ARTIST IN MUSIC HISTORY , DARE TO TAKE YOU , GIVING EVERYTHING , THANK YOU TRENT !!!
One of the top 5 albums of the 90s, it introduced industrial music to the main stream.
It strangely feels like watching the end of everything in the most beautiful way
One of the best songs of all career.A classic from the 90´s!

"March of the Pigs"
Released: February 25, 1994
[Verse 1]
Step right up, march, push
Crawl right up on your knees
Please, greed, feed
(No time to hesitate)
[Pre-Chorus]
I want a little bit
I want a piece of it
I think he's losing it
I want to watch it come down
Don't like the look of it
Don't like the taste of it
Don't like the smell of it
I want to watch it come down
[Chorus]
All the pigs are all lined up
I give you all that you want
Take the skin and peel it back
Now doesn't it make you feel better?
[Verse 2]
Shove it up inside, surprise, lies
Stains like the blood on your teeth
Bite, chew, suck
(Away the tender parts)
[Pre-Chorus]
I want to break it up
I want to smash it up
I want to fuck it up
I want to watch it come down
Maybe afraid of it
Let's discredit it
Let's pick away at it
I want to watch it come down
[Chorus]
All the pigs are all lined up
I give you all that you want
Take the skin and peel it back
Now doesn't it make you feel better?
[Outro]
The pigs have won tonight
Now they can all sleep soundly
And everything is alright

To have been a part of this history must be mind blowing to reflect upon
The video is really underrated and fits the themes of the song. It's a little funny too. You have a band "performing" and acting out in a nice controlled environment, complete with assistants that reapply make-up to maintain the "proper aesthetic" and who quickly pick up thrown microphones so as to not miss the next verse. You have to maintain the right image and attitude when selling records.
I've been watching this a lot and l the way Trent forces his supporting performers to play frantically because he is *physically bullying* them is brilliant. He managed to do that in a single take without screwing any of them up lmao
Trent is an underrated vocalist from the 90's
The guy plays all the instruments, he's just underrated in general.
That drum tone is everything
I have always loved this video, raw and real.
How perfectly Reznor has nailed the 90s goth vibe without being overwrought
