I feel like the back story of this song is that the singer was late to band practice, and when he got there he started venting. The rest of the band was warming up with their instruments, and someone hit the record button...as such this song was born
I once wrote a song that my at-the-time-new-band-mates had only written music for, & had a chosen title, by playing the music in my car while delivering pizza all night & singing to it in the car. Titled "The Tainted (live)," live because that was the best recording we had ever done & the band broke up before we could try a studio recording.

Listening to this song as a teen has changed the way I parent my own child when she was going through a rough patch as a teen. She is in college now and has her shit together more than me. I could not be prouder.
I resonated with this song as a teenager so much. My parents never took the time to hear me out, or ever really care about how I felt. They always just kicked me out, or chalked me up as a “troubled kid” when really a lot of what I was going through and the trauma I have was from them. This song perfectly expressed the anger and resentment I had towards the world at that time.
The slaves are annihilated. you think they are your parents, but they are imprisoned in a mental cell, they are dissociated, an altered ego that obeys the system governs in their place. In other words, your parents have been assimilated by an alien race, like in that movie Alien.
It's kinda like that for everybody. For some parents it's a full-time job just keeping their kids out of prison. I think in the future you will see you actually had it pretty good.
I don’t think there is a more accurate representation of what having ADHD is like than this, I relate so much to the line “I was just staring at the wall thinking about everything, but then again I was thinking about nothing” whenever I get overwhelmed and space out

One time back in the late 80s or early 90s, my Dad typed out all of the lyrics to this song at school and a teacher saw what he typed. The teacher sent him to the office and then he had to explain the song + band to the office and his Dad for 4 hours straight. Miss you Dad :(
@ttfpouyii not only that, it's automatically sus when someone starts a story "not ME PERSONALLY" 🙄 if it didn't happen TO you or AT LEAST in your sight? Then it didn't happen.
@ttfpouyiiuh, you realise people can listen to songs outside of the time they were made, right? Or is it still the early 80s (Also you shouldn’t put an apostrophe in 80s)
I'm not surprised. That never happened to me or my friends (HS in the late 80s), but it was the kind of thing we'd hear about uptight adults doing. That's how we interpreted the name of the band too - uptight adults throwing around that label to any behavior they had a problem with or didn't understand.
For real, alot of people think this song is just funny as hell and i can see why, but for me the song really speaks to a younger and very troubled version of myself.
I had nu metal for my teenage anger I felt back in the late 90s-early 2000s, but man oh MAN did this song encapsul how it was for me and my parents back then! From the church thing, wanting to seek therapy but being denied it, parents breaking my metal CDs because they thought it was "satanic" and making me "evil and depressed", etc.
Hard music is therapeutic, it kept me from hurting myself and others. Even if it was "Satanic music", we still have the free will to decide if it will influence us detrimentally.
@aofmual I’m aware of that lol. I’m just saying that Nu Metal also was an outlet for angry, young teens such as myself back in the prime of it who weren’t born around the time this song came out and bands like this in a way inspired bands after them to carry on the same message in a way to a new generation of teens back then.
Yup. I remember 29 years ago we were listening metal with school pal and his step dad was saying we were listening to stupid satanistic music. Now Time passed, im NOT a parent now and i still listening stupid satanistic music lol

I just love how it gets slightly more aggrivated and faster each time it gets twards the chorus. The song actually has the feeling like you're getting worked up and its amazing

*LYRICS*
Sometimes I try to do things and it just doesn't work out the way I wanted too
And I get real frustrated, and its like
And I try hard to do it and take my time
And it just doesn't work out the way I want it too
It's like I concentrate on it real hard but it just doesn't work out
And everything I do and everything I try, it never turns out
It's like I need time to figure these things out
But there's always someone there going
Hey Mike: You know we've been noticing you've been having a lot of problems lately
You know, maybe you get away, and like maybe you should talk about it,
You'll feel a lot better
And I go: No it's okay, you know I'll figure it out
Just leave me alone I'll figure it out
You know I'll just work it on myself,
And they go: Well you know if you want to talk about it I'll be here, you know
And you'll probably feel a lot better if you talk about it, so want don't you talk about it
And I go: No I don't want to, I'm okay, I'll figure it out myself
And they just keep bugging me and they just keep bugging me
And it builds up inside
So you're gonna be institutionalized
You'll come out brainwashed with bloodshot eyes
You won't have any say
They'll brainwash you until you see their way
I'm not crazy - institution
You're the one who's crazy - institution
You're driving me crazy - institution
They stuck me in an institution
Said it was the only solution
To give me the needed professional help
To protect me from the enemy - myself
I was in my room and I was just like staring at the wall thinking about everything
But then again I was thinking about nothing
And then my mom came in and I didn't even know she was there she called my name
And I didn't even hear it, and then she started screaming: MIKE! MIKE!
And I go: What, what's the matter?
And she goes: What's the matter with you?
I go: There's nothing wrong mom
And she goes: Don't tell me that, you're on drugs!
And I go: No mom I'm not on drugs I'm okay, I was just thinking you know,
Why don't you get me a Pepsi
And she goes: No you're on drugs!
I go: Mom I'm okay, I'm just thinking
She goes: No you're not thinking, you're on drugs! Normal people don't act that way!
I go: Mom just give me a Pepsi, please
All I want is a Pepsi, and she wouldn't give it to me
All I wanted was a Pepsi, just one Pepsi, and she wouldn't give it to me
Just a Pepsi
They give you a white shirt with long sleeves
Tied around you're back, you're treated like thieves
Drug you up because they're lazy
It's too much work to help a crazy
I'm not crazy - institution
You're the one who's crazy - institution
You're driving me crazy - institution
They stuck me in an institution
Said it was the only solution
To give me the needed professional help
To protect me from the enemy - myself
I was sitting in my room and my mom and my dad came in
And they pulled up a chair and they sat down, they go:
Mike, we need to talk to you
And I go: Okay what's the matter
They go:
Me and your mom have been noticing lately that you've been having a lot of problems,
You've been going off for no reason and we're afraid you're gonna hurt somebody,
We're afraid you're gonna hurt yourself
So we decided that it would be in your interest if we put you somewhere
Where you could get the help that you need
And I go: Wait, what are you talking about, we decided!?
My best interest?! How do you know what's my best interest is?
How can you say what my best interest is? What are you trying to say, I'm crazy?
When I went to your schools, I went to your churches,
I went to your institutional learning facilities?! So how can you say I'm crazy?
They say they're gonna fix my brain
Alleviate my suffering and my pain
But by the time they fix my head
Mentally I'll be dead
I'm not crazy - institution
You're the one who's crazy - institution
You're driving me crazy - institution
They stuck me in an institution
Said it was the only solution
To give me the needed professional help
To protect me from the enemy - myself
It doesn't matter, I'll probably get hit by a car anyway
Thank you
Thanks a bunch ✊️✊️✊️✊️

My work made us watch a training video about "avoiding violence in the workplace", and shortly after HR did some events for suicide prevention. I told my colleagues all I wanted was a Pepsi. *One* guy got it.
I feel like the back story of this song is that the singer was late to band practice, and when he got there he started venting. The rest of the band was warming up with their instruments, and someone hit the record button...as such this song was born
I like the idea of this theory
thats kinda how most songs happen......
I once wrote a song that my at-the-time-new-band-mates had only written music for, & had a chosen title, by playing the music in my car while delivering pizza all night & singing to it in the car. The final result is in my music Playlist on my user account.
