- In 2003, Bob Mazza set off to renovate an old furniture store. During that renovation, a picture was taken that became an analog horror staple of unreal proportions. For the first time ever, Rob Sussman of WTAQ's The Morning News with Matt and Rob sits down with the man who inadvertently spawned a cult horror mystery and takes you "Into the Backrooms".

I've been following this for years, and I'm so lucky to see its conclusion. Also, it's the weirdest thing: I was like "Why is the name Midwest Communications so familiar to me?" Turns out, it's because I grew up in Wausau! It's been about 20 years since I lived there, so you guys just sort of faded in my memory. A belated RIP to Duke, that man was a LEGEND!
I feel so bad for this guy who’s just trying to own his store but people keep walking in asking about a horror phenomenon. He probably doesn’t even get it which is more sad

Someone quoted that the owner was warned there would be tourism, but up until now that haven’t gotten as much as they expected.
It’s a hobby town, so I’m sure he’s accustomed to geeks and nerds who gasm over historical details for their favorite planes, trains, or RC cars.
Turns out he’s embracing it, in future, he said he’ll make posters with “The Home Of The Backrooms” and eventually start selling stuff
"Based on Kane Parsons works" I bet the person who made the backrooms post is pissed off they are not making bank on the idea like every game/youtuber/movie
that goes to show no matter how popular something you created, the credits will always be taken by someone
the movie is made by Kane Parsons so yeah its based on his videos aka his works, not the backrooms itself

You know. Since it is a hobby shop, they could make a small diorama of the backrooms in there. Kind of play into it to attract more business.
To be fair, the building has created more happy memories over the years as a hub for models and R/C racing than it ever did as a depressing furniture shop. So I don’t see a need to restore any part of it from how it is now.

Oddly enough I have a feeling this was a good twist of fate for his business having unknowingly opened shop in a recent piece of pop culture history. More so than if he had opened another kind of business.
Nah, he didn't open shop in a piece of pop culture history, he made that piece of pop culture history possible by deciding to renovate the place.

I'm pleased to have an answer for this mystery. I am completely satisfied with this & am very happy you were able to hold an interview. I honestly don't care if other viewers might say this is boring because this is the answer we were searching for. I'm the sort of person who loves Sealand & everything to do with its history. So this is a wonderful video to entertain me tonight.

From what information is out there, Rohner's furniture started in the 20's , and moved into this Oregon St location in the 50's.
The renovations of the furniture shop to its final, infamous iteration were around 1978. I believe that the furniture store closed around '94.
If it were me? I’d lean into it: Recreate the Backrooms to a tee and sell tickets for people to go through it. Something like a funhouse mirror maze + escape room experience.
Yes! This. This is the best way for them to go about it. People will drive there and pay for tickets, I guarantee it!

Can we talk about how the lights are buzzing at certain points in the background of this video?
wow, nobody bothered to replace the ballasts in those lights for so long!, the sound actually comes from the ballasts, not the fluorescent tubes themselves, and it gets louder as the ballasts get older and weaker. the sound will soon disappear forever when the ballasts are changed out for electronic ones that squeal instead. or if all of the existing parabolic (louvered) fluorescent troffer lights are ripped out and replaced with LED flat panel troffer lights. witch also have electronic ballasts in them (known as an LED driver block) witch also squeal. it would be cool to obtain one of the old magnetic ballasts with that good old maximum hum buzz, let alone a whole fluorescent troffer fixture!
So we finally solved the mystery of the original location but we still haven't found the original poster the one who started it all
I'm maintenence worker in a college that has several gigantic abandoned buildings. I found an entrance to the backrooms, and the room of requirement. To Muggles it's usually just a foldout chair with a CRT-TV/VHS player combo w/ a version of the latter half of Titanic from Hollywood video in the VCR. But I had my ratchet set disappear to hell or somewhere once.

The blueprints could be lost at this point, if they were ever stored; also the Twitter post wasn't the first person to find the location.

Bro went to the real backrooms! The backrooms is the coolest thing i've discovered since the kowloon walled city like two decades ago. By the way it kinda feels like I invented the backrooms by accident a decade ago when i built a huge (1x2x2m) miniature brutalist style museum. There were many different types of rooms with different shapes and height and stairs and two bridges and a skylight (and almost no windows cause it's supposed to be a gallery). I later filled it with miniature art. It's not in use anymore unfortunately but i got the sections in a storage

YUCK! all they need to do is change out the ballasts. if they are gonna slap up some LED's, they have to be good quality non integrated beasts. they better not put in some of those tacky LED flat panel troffers that go brown in the middle. i think LED troffers going brown in the middle is about as bad as yellow wallpaper.
did bob explain what the original layout of the room was? do you have more footage of this part where he starts explaining stuff about a walkway at 10:32 ? ive been trying to figure out what the original layout of the room was and what spot in the room the picture was taken
Bob is convinced that looking directly into the room, just behind where we sat him for the interview, is the place where the picture was taken.
I guess the windows couldn't be seen because they were covered back then.

@@robsussman340The orientation of the ceiling light does not match taking the picture in the direction of the wall with the windows. It must be towards one of the side walls.
@@stalefurset9444 I was told that he totally changed out the ceiling, including the lights, which may account for it.

i find it kinda stupid that ppl would go to this location and take pictures but why? the yellow carpet and wallpaper and even the walls themselves are gone so i dont see the point lol
the fluorescent troffer lights are still there, and they still have there original noisy magnetic ballasts in them. rip them out for LED's (good quality non integrated LED tube troffers, not edgelit flatpanel fail flop troffers), sell the fluorescent troffers of to lighting enthusiasts/collectors for a pretty penny (the fixtures are more valuable as collectors items than as E-waste scrap. especially since they have this backstory behind them) and there you go, all gone.
the last thing you would need to do is erase as much of the backrooms history from the building as possible. (including the grid ceiling)

@@mrverse99 plaster the place with signs saying "this is not the backrooms" andor "backrooms enthusiasts are strictly banned from the premises". make life vary hard for the fanatics until you build a bad reputation towards them, thus stopping the influx. as for the troffers, it's a bit like throwing bread to the pigeons. anyways, the stupid R.N wants my to shut down my laptop and go to bed now. i'm gonna wait till she's gone and then sneak out and traverse the liminal hellscape I AM currently trapped in LOL!!!
