Not only that, on the GoFundMe he says if he can fix the roof and building- he'll be able to not just preserve the hobby store, but will throw Backrooms events honoring the Backrooms- ad even have special Halloween events- He's ACTUALLY ON BOARD! We couldn't have hoped he'd be that receptive- Here's hoping we can raise the money to fix and make the Backrooms truly, REAL
I'm actually pretty impressed with the hobby store renovations. It's cool that the building is actually getting used. The ominous tone of backrooms is kind of counteracted by how wholesome the hobby store is.
in germany, bavaria, kempten, where i live there WAS a small backrooms escape room but there wasn't many people coming there so it got forgotten and eventually taken down
reminds me of all the backrooms lore where someone finds the "exit" only to be in a window, looking out at millions of identical windows, all in an endless black void. I bet looking out a window there at midnight would give you the same vibe. just lit windows in a dark town.
I like how finding the backrooms hasn't really diminished the creepiness of the original idea. Now we're all just really invested in a Wisconsin hobby store 😂

I hope Kane donates some profit from his A24 movie to HobbyTown. Local, small businesses make huge, lifelong connections that are so strong, they can persist after death; families can be friends for decades upon decades, even when the original pair of friends are gone. That is how important places like this are. I hope the Backrooms community can have a positive impact on Bob and his HobbyTown family.
This is incredibly wholesome that this guy provided all this info and is considering making a backrooms theme at the store. I also can't help but wonder what the original 4chan poster of the creepy pasta is thinking now after their seemingly throwaway paragraph attached to the photo has blown up the way it has.
We need a giant warehouse that has basements to stories and advertise as an indoor adventure park backrooms experience. Great how the owner plans on making a photoshoot area!
This is absolutely WILD to me. I grew up near Oshkosh and have extremely fond memories of visiting HobbyTown with my late father. He and I would stop by all the time to pick up sheets of plastic or paints for whatever project we were working on. I loved looking at all the science kits and model rockets. Hearing that I had done all that memory making just below The Backrooms gave me an unbelievable chill. I felt like I had seen a ghost. So much love to HobbyTown! Thanks for the amazing video!
I really hope it stays open. He's right, hobby shops are becoming rew and far between, with quality disappearing. As a hobbyist myself, I think it's extremely important to foster the growth of these community spaces as much as possible. Hobby shops in my area have been closing down my whole life, it's rare to ever see a new one pop up. Keep hobby shops alive!!!
I wanna see someone do a video where it’s presented in the style of ‘I Remember’ from the Kane Pixels series. (An old-fashioned voice synthesiser reading it accompanied by psychedelic imagery of the Complex/ASYNC facility) A nice blend of old and new if you ask me.
love the idea about giving away the parts of the old wallpaper and carpet. imagine owning a certificate that has a piece of the original backrooms' wallpaper on it. insane.
Great video, thank you for putting this up and helping Bob with the donation link. I've donated now, even though I've already donated hundreds and hundreds to the store to feed my Gunpla addiction over the years, lol. Not only has it been a trip to find out the Backrooms was in my own city and the very Hobbytown I've been shopping at for the last decade or so, but that Bob has embraced it the way he has. Like you said, it could've easily been a lawyers office or dentist office and not somewhere that people could truly make a pilgrimage too.
Putting the original backrooms pictures and carpets, pieces of walls, etc, up for auction would be an even better idea, so many people invested time in the backrooms, I’m sure they will be ok with investing money for a good cause
It's only a matter of time before someone builds a replica of this place. I imagine the next step of this rabbit hole is identifying the exact make and model of the wallpaper patterns and carpets.
According to the gofundme, the owner will recreate the backrooms with removable carpet and walls and host events. It's awesome that he is embracing the backrooms
So often the internet ruins things when it comes to the real world. But people being super respectful, if not a little weird, and Bob being such a great guy is exactly the kind of good feels story that you need sometimes.

My grandma actually lives in Oshkosh, so me and my brother went to look at the building. It was crazy to think that the building we were looking at started such a huge thing on the internet.
im so glad people seem to be respectful so far, and that the people at the business are embracing it, i really hope it all continues to go well for years to come. its not often that the answer to an internet mystery is something that can be considered wholesome, but im glad this one is, its the best outcome!
"Hey Paul, whatta think about this design for the showfloor?" "Looks good, plain and simple It's not like thousands or millions of people are gonna be obsessed with it in few decades from now" ...
8:52 i quite enjoyed that toliet thank you very much lol seriously though this is awesome seeing all these new photos and Bob is awesome. I'm always worried when stuff gets discovered online that people involved with it irl are gonna think it's weird or don't understand it but bob seems cool about it, and tbh from a business view talk about the best publicity.
that toilet was amazing. Reminded me of a summer job I had years and years ago. I was demolishing an old building, and wish I'd took photos. An old prison, just endless gray hallways. In the basement we found the creepiest thing. Just a single room, and in the center was a toilet. Just a toilet. It was probably a suicide watch cell, but it just had such a creepy vibe it made my skin crawl.
This makes me so happy. The Backrooms has brought about community in some diverse and surprising ways. There is the community of artists and creators who have developed fictional lore for the Backrooms universe. There is the community of internet sleuths who have, after many years, managed to track down the photo's origin. There is the literal community of Oshkosh, Wisconsin neighbors, business owners, and RC racing enthusiasts. And to think that Hobbytown's owner has held onto all of the renovation photos for YEARS and is kind enough to share them with us now... it's really a surprisingly wholesome saga. I hope that these overlapping communities are able to come together and help save Hobbytown!
Wow this man seems like just the best guy. I can't imagine finding out that my building was internet-famous! It's wonderful to see him embracing it - and wonderful for you to support him and try to help his GoFundMe. I can't donate right now, but I hope this blows up so all of the people who love The Backrooms can support this place!
14:20 It’s truly heartwarming to know, despite the Backrooms being such a cold soulless hellscape, the *real* place that inspired it was and still is filled with joy, happiness, positivity, and community. What an absolutely unexpected, but perfectly balanced realization.
Incredible video. Your production quality is so high for such a small channel, wishing you luck with the algorithm in future. And here's hoping the fundraiser can save Hobbytown!
The statement about how the backrooms could've turned into some "lawyer's office not open to the public" hit me hard. How lucky we were that the man to buy the building would coincidentally turn it into a place meant for the public access. It wasn't a lawyer or law firm or private company buying the building, but a man who'd leave the front door open to everyone 7 days a week. My favorite architectural projects are the ones meant for foot traffic. Malls, stations, department stores, theme parks, museums, antique stores. And of course, a hobby store with big open rooms for gatherings. Not solely for monetary gain, but to harbor life and foster passion. We are SO lucky. I wish more buildings like this existed, and it's folks like Bob keeping it alive
Wow, absolutely incredible. The internet can be really cursed sometimes, but then folks come together to achieve something like this. It's one thing - and very cool - to not just unearth the origins of the photo, but to actually dig into and learn the history of the building only to find out that the owner of the current business is incredibly kind and welcoming of all this new attention. Hearing him talk so passionately about his business, and how much happiness it brings not just himself but the locals is so wholesome. I'm hopeful that the campaign is fully funded and he can get the necessary repairs done to maintain the building.
Its so odd that I had a vague knowledge of hobbytown usa before I learnt of your channel and the search. Watched videos people had posted of races round the tracks. Love this guy! Hope he keeps the place open
I noticed that these photos of that building during the renovation are perfect liminal spaces! These photos are so unintentinally liminal! That means that Bob Matah is basically the first person ever to take liminal space photos, but these photos weren't even intended to look like that! The genre of liminal space photography was born because of the famous backrooms image taken by Bob! Bob Matah created liminal space photography by accident, without his photos liminal spaces wouldn't even exist!
I kinda love how wholesome it is that Hobby Town just went along with and is now a part of the meme and mythos that the internet created out of a renovation image they made in the early 2000's.
In 2000 the work colleague of my father invited us. At this time he live in Alterlaa it's this famous housing complex in Vienna. It was built in the 70s and was designed as a satellite city you had everything you needed from supermarkets, school's, restaurants community space and on some floors swimming pools and also sauna. If you loved the game "Anemoiapolis" you might find some similarities 😊
i was so excited when i saw the thumbnail of this video, and i think it's so cool that an image Robert and his wife took years ago are helping to keep their Hobbytown store alive and well :D i wish them the best and the way the backrooms photo story is turning out makes my heart warm.
and we come to the end, after years of searching, almost giving up and starting to conclude that it was just a rendering, apparently a surprise appears. starting from the image archive, until finally all these mysteries are revealed. thank you to 4chan users from those who uploaded just pictures to those who made creepy pasta, you made my 2019-2024 full of color, the ongoing mystery of backrooms makes me always enthusiastic, and also Wisconsin hobby store, I say thank you very much because without them maybe backrooms would never exist :)
Wow who would've thought a slideshow of an empty, restauration-needing building could be so exciting xD Really shows how much the og pic had us on the hook. The pictures are very interesting, each one of them has this creepy liminal feeling! Ofc this is in the nature of the matter of empty spaces, but with the Backrooms' prestige, this is really unique! Edit: Props to the owner tho! For sharing this with us. Seems like a chill guy to be so open about it :D
sony cybershot mentioned!!!! :D it's so nice of the owner to let people take picture and tour the original backrooms space. may hobbytown live forever. :)
Man, this is insane! I can't donate to the gofundme right now, but I really hope they raise enough money. The owner sounds like a gem and I wish nothing but the best for him and his business!
you should contact media and game creators that built their artwork based on the backrooms! they would probably help sharing the crowdfunding campaign. loved knowing more about robert, congrats on the work :)
The fact that we get a chance to visit a backrooms mock-up at the location where the original images were taken is truly incredible... What an amazing man the owner is for letting fans and people online have a chance to do something like that.
dang, was not expecting this to be such a sweet and wholesome story. i really hope there are enough ppl who can help fund these repairs, especially since the backrooms is something so huge and known by p much everyone nowadays. i really want to see success and a happy outcome for bob who is so cool abt it and gave us a lot more that he didn't have to!
The other photos of the store before renovation are just as, if not more creepy and surreal then the original photo, it's like a gold mine of liminal spaces and the history of the place just adds so much more depth to it
I feel like this is the official end of the backrooms, you just end up back in the same first photo but you turn the corner and you're back in a regular old abandoned building
The backrooms are all those spaces we walked in in earlier times of our lives that no longer exist, except in our memories, so many backrooms that no one will ever see again or that others never knew or cared about.
I'm normally not easily persuaded (and I really can't afford it), but after watching this I can't help but go and donate what little I can to help out. I hope many more children can continue to enjoy such a cool and unique place, and the owner seems like a wonderful person.
Wow. Im amazed that Bob, and his hobby-town changed the Internets life forever. Not only did he take the pictures and somehow it got through some 4chan user, and then Kane made a very talented VFX creation on it with a whole immersive plot which managed to get a WHOLE ASS MOVIE based on it. So yeah, Bob managed to get a whole movie based on a room.
The way you have the ambient sound while you show all the rooms reminds me of this flash game I used to play called The 99 Rooms. I think you would like it.
This is amazing I live in appleton wi witch is 20 mins from oshkosh I've been to this building it's still up I can't believe I've actually been in the backrooms and actually escaped lol this is mind blowing to me actually seeing and being in the building in the exact room of the backrooms photo that started it all is incredible
The biggest twist is how wholesome the Backrooms is. Turns out that the creatures that stalk its halls are RC racers and model airplane enthusiasts.
checks out tbh
I mean considering how the backrooms (both the wiki and the og image) often include themes of childhood memories and nightmares, it just kinda became full circle now
RC racing would be cool
@@JeriSmiler I’d be terrified of no clipping thru a wall.

He's a real bro. Not only did he bring new life to a Main Street retail space for decades, but also the mythos surrounding its old interior.
I just hope the people of the internet return the favor and help him raise the money to repair the building.

dang, was not expecting this to be such a sweet and wholesome story. i really hope there are enough ppl who can help fund these repairs, especially since the backrooms is something so huge and known by p much everyone nowadays. i really want to see success and a happy outcome for bob who is so cool abt it and gave us a lot more that he didn't have to!
The other photos of the store before renovation are just as, if not more creepy and surreal then the original photo, it's like a gold mine of liminal spaces and the history of the place just adds so much more depth to it
Awesome video and interview with the owner! Definitely donating money to him to keep the building and “The backrooms” alive!
This is actually really nice because now we can make our depictions of Level 0 more detailed and diverse than just a maze of yellow walls
Such amazing team work. I just know these images are going to find themselves into new Backrooms videos. ! Even the stuff downstairs… haunting.
7:19 manilla room?
8:12 level 2?/level 5's boiler room?
10:25 level 4?
crazy how similar these images look to other backrooms levels :3

@@squidiskool what lol
I feel like this is the official end of the backrooms, you just end up back in the same first photo but you turn the corner and you're back in a regular old abandoned building
8:48 “MAYBE ITS A SKIBIDI TOILET”🗣️🔥
yes, yes
Rizzle me timbers
The backrooms are all those spaces we walked in in earlier times of our lives that no longer exist, except in our memories, so many backrooms that no one will ever see again or that others never knew or cared about.
I'm normally not easily persuaded (and I really can't afford it), but after watching this I can't help but go and donate what little I can to help out. I hope many more children can continue to enjoy such a cool and unique place, and the owner seems like a wonderful person.
Like most people here, i have been watching since your first backrooms video. Its insane how underrated you are.
I was not disappointed with the extra photos. They fit the vibe so well 😂
Not gonna lie, never cared about the backrooms, but seeing Bob, I'm all in.
This is so much bigger than just the Backrooms.
This entire building is legitimately just the epitome of what a liminal space truly is.
I can’t wait for some one to make a gmod remake of this store
Now THAT is a good thumbnail, perfectly captures liminality!
Lovely with the Go fund me, already pledged. What a kind man.
This is a fantastic video, what a win for the culture with this one
Slender man 🤝 backrooms
Being in Wisconsin
This was a fantastic video. I love the additional insight into The Backrooms.
The way you have the ambient sound while you show all the rooms reminds me of this flash game I used to play called The 99 Rooms. I think you would like it.
so cool! These are such beautiful pics! Love that this is in my state haha.
Well, that’s on my bucket list now. Omg.
Bob seems so sweet I'm probably going to visit for my birthday
You're elevating yourself to UA-cam liminal space legend. Well deserved ❤
Now we need to find the identity of the anonymous user who wrote the original backrooms paragraph
Mr Bob Maza, you've got a goldmine.
Backrooms real experience + VR / Escape room.
i love ur videos, i like how you converted it into a story
