    You have great balance & front quadrant strokes which gives you the proper timing for the roll breathing . Finding balance is the key.

    Omg Coach Mindy your video on breathing timing was a game changer for me. I followed your instructions today and improved my time on 2000 yards by over 2 minutes! The catch on my low side arm is finally propelling me forward with a higher elbow rather sinking/dropping downward. Also my shoulder wasn’t soar like it is usually!! You rock Coach Mindy. Thank you for sharing your expert instructions. I’m a big fan

    Very interesting demos thanks. What really stood out for me was that with the breathe-early your arm had created a trough in the water so you didn’t have to lift your head as high. On the breathe-late the trough had been & gone so you had to rotate further to get the mouth clear of the water line.

    Wonderful tip from you Coach Mandy. I, too, have migrated my freestyle breathing from every five strokes to every three strokes. This has greatly increased my swim endurance and have reduced the drag. Now I don't feel like running out of breath. Thank you so much for your periodical tips. Cheers! Avi.

    This is a timely video! After my breath, I lose my technique. My straight arm is sinking, well that entire part of my body starts to sink. I thought maybe I was over-rotating, but from this video, I'm sure I breathe too late.

    Hi CM, What I found interesting is that I thought my timing was OK. I then played back some video of myself taken about a month ago and guess what? I'm a bit late! Not as much as you've demonstrated here to clearly show the difference, but late. I'm starting to lift my head to breathe as my stroking arm moves into the last third. Between diagonal and finish. Your head is already above the water at this point. Thanks for another great video, as who knows how long it would have taken me (or someone else) to recognise this in my stroke!

      Yes, its definitely a very small point this is why I had to exaggerate it in this video otherwise no one would be able to point out what I was talking about. Yes, even a slight delay is all you need to throw off your rhythm. Glad you found it and are working towards correcting it! -Coach M

    Great video! I’m still a struggling swimmer so when you point out the difference between early and late breathing, I have to go back and rewatch the video over and over again to find the difference. I know I’m making a mistake in my breathing so this helps. Hopefully I can correct it.

    Yes...Thank you...I am a weak bilateral breather and I've noticed when I breathe on my weak side if I breathe early it's a little easier then if I breathe late so I am most always trying to make sure I breathe early.... I am sure I have more technique to deal with to train a better bilateral stroke....thanks

    Yep...I used to breathe very early in the stroke, but I kept my head out of the water for to longo...the effect was the same as breathing late and for me it was a dropped elbow on my low side arm.
    Since I corrected this long breath, things improved significantly.

    I found focussing on the bow wave at your forehead and breathing in the hole behind the bow wave is good practice as this makes you breathe early too. If you breathe late you lose the bow wave and everything breaks down.from there.

    Very helpful video. I think I leave it late to breathe to my left side because, for some reason, my head isn't close enough to the surface right at the time when I ought to breathe. Breathing to the other side is fine though.

      If your breath is late, you are usually lower in the water because the timing is off. So that could be why you are sitting lower in the first place or you are pushing your head down as well. Experiment with the timing and let me know how it goes! -Coach M

    Hi Mandy, forgot to mention, yes I'm working on my breathing technique. I've realised there are times when I'm still holding my breath and sometimes not getting a clean breath. Maybe my late timing i(see below!) is not helping with taking in water with a breath? I'm doing some warm up drills and focusing on trying to take small breaths and making sure I'm breathing out slowly as soon as my face is under water.

      Hi Endo, yes you are correct. Sometimes a late breath can trigger a disruption in your breathing pattern causing you to take a shallow breath or no air at all. I would say to prioritize getting the timing right and the form first. Once you feel more comfortable, start working in the correct breathing pattern when you are more relaxed. It can become really complex to think of it all at once. Eventually, all the steps will come together and you will realize how everything is so connected once you let the process take its course. Keep moving you are getting closer and closer every time you go to the pool. 🏊😀 -Coach Mandy

    Your head is rotating to breathe before forming the catch. Is my observation correct? I rotate my head to breathe as soon as the catch is made. Which one is correct? Please guide.

    Hi Coach Mandy! I rotate easier onto right side to breathe than left side. Neck range of motion is also better turning right than left. So breathing while on left side is always somewhat awkward & rush. Would you please suggest something to improve?

      Hi Nora, yes I would say if you can become more comfortable on your back so you are able to rotate to this extent on your weaker side. This will help you relax further which is needed for a less awkward breath. Hope this helps! 🙌🏽😄 -Coach M

      Hi Martin, breathing early is correct as shown starting at 2:44. Your head position rotates with your body when you roll for a breath. When the timing has no delay, you will have plenty of room to breathe and it won’t throw off your rhythm. 👍🏼 Hope this helps! -Coach M

    This video is just what I was looking for. I literally had the lifeguard take a vid of me swimming freestyle the other day and one of the key things I was doing wrong was breathing too late. It was causing a huge imbalance in the rest of my stroke.
    I am now trying to concentrate on getting that breath as soon as my low arm begins to pull water back. I have noticed the difference already as I am able to get more air in my lungs and am able to swim more comfortably. It is a hard habit to break however as I find myself reverting back to breathing late on certain strokes. Do you have any other mental queues that are good for reminding yourself when to start turning your head for that breath?

      Hi Mark! Yes, time the breath exactly when the high side arm lands in or enters the water NOT the pulling arm. Usually the delay can be triggered by this. For example, if you breathe over your left shoulder, time the breath when the right arm is landing in the water. Keep me posted! 👍🏼🏊🏼‍♂️🙌🏽 -Coach Mandy

    Thank you for this, I have been feeling a drag when I take a breath and I suspect from watching this, I’m breathing late. Question: I’m guessing you’re only breathing to one side to demonstrate the breathing technique in the video but I’ve noticed so many good swimmers at my pool breathing at every stroke from one side only. Shouldn’t we be alternating sides during laps or is there some secret I’m not aware of?

      Hi Kathryn great question. I was just demonstrating the form of the breath. I have an older video on breathing patterns but will touch on this again. Yes the common breathing patterns are: every 2, every 3, and 2,2,4. I would always suggest gravitating towards three to start because it helps with keeping an even stroke as well as forces you to become comfortable on both sides.
      Every two is great as well. However, it’s best to switch up the sides here and there and also maintain your form as it is easier to break down if you are not used to maintaining proper breathing form. Hope this helps! 🙌🏽🏊🏻‍♀️ -Coach Mandy

      SWIMVICE Good, I’ve been breathing every third stroke alternating sides. I tried out your breathing tip at the pool and indeed, I was breathing late, so this has helped speed up my swim as I was pausing on that stroke for too long. Now, just got to figure out how to get used to water in my mouth as I take a low breath, guessing that’s just the way it is.

      @@NorCalMom when you reach forward and roll onto your side a little it'll help to catch your breathe in the trough that naturally appears. Here the water will be a little lower than the rest. Also imagine a line going across your face, one google will be below this line in the water and one google will be out. As you catch a breathe move your mouth to one side so that only the side that's out is open. This and catching the breathe in the trough will mean you shouldn't get any water in your mouth. Other things to try would be to look back slightly and not directly sidewards, still keeping your head aligned with your spine and not coming up out the water, imagine it's on a stick and you can only rotate your neck but otherwise it stays still. As you rotate to the side look a little diagonal and backwards. Good luck!

    Wait - are you suggesting that breathing early is breathing on time? Most pertinent is that you are saying the head should snap back into position before high arm is in water preparing to catch?

      David Gerson your head position rotates at the same time as your body rotates. If it’s delayed, an interruption in the stroke cycle will occur. Naturally if you get the breath early you will get it quickly ( will return before your arm sweeps past your face). It’s not “snapping” back that’s not a word I would use as it implies jerking motion with tension. It’s still relaxed it’s just timed exactly on rotation so you avoid any balance issues. 👍🏼🏊🏼‍♂️👏🏼 -Coach Mandy

      SWIMVICE thanks Coach Mandy. Specifically I am referring to your early demo in which your head returns to position BEFORE your high arm re-enters the water. Is that an intentional and preferable difference to returning your head at the same time as high arm reenters?

    I recognize you don't really kick too much in that stroke. Is it a bad idea to kick a lot? Subconsciously as I anticipate taking that breath i kick a lot trying to keep my legs up then everything goes bad.

      Hi Walter, that’s a great question. If you are using your kick to stabilize your body (I.e a breath), your effort increases significantly which is why it is not a good idea. The kick is used for rotation and some propulsion. The only times you would see a swimmer kick at a higher tempo is for sprints. However, when you are learning how to be more efficient, relaxing your legs is a high priority.
      If you are kicking to help support your breath, the issue is your body alignment not your kick. Kicking too much will make you sink further and will make you work harder.

    Hi Mandy, did you know that pool water quality also has a significant impact on breathing performance?
    Pools with relatively high chlorine levels, typically have dangerously high Trichloramine gases being exposed, just above the waterline (these gases sit there, since they are four times heavier than air).

    K, I think I'm closer to pinpointing why I'm nearly a beached whale after doing a single lap 😂 The way I noticed myself taking a breath was my head returning to the water at the same rate as my arm, which honestly looks similar to the "late breath" here. And of course I'm way out of breath by the time I reach the wall. I'll try being more cognizant of my head timing now 😊
