      Great video Coach Mandy!! This helped me tons with my 2 stroke breathing & 2 beat kick. After reviewing the vid/info, I realized that it was the lack of rotation that was throwing off the timing for everything (stroke/breathing/kick). Applied this on Monday, and after making the tweaks, I was able to hit my first 600m swim (with paddles n buoy) 🤙🏽🥳! Longest prior to that was 240m. Talk about a game changer 💪🏽. Thanks again for the vids.

    I can't say much in the way of knowledge because I just started around a month ago and have my own personal training coach. But I found my rotation got better when I started fo relax in the water. As a beginner I was tensed up. He is also working on my form, trying to keep my elbows up slowed down my stroke rate. And today I felt I was gliding in the water better than I had been

  • @Spruteus
    @Spruteus 2 роки тому +5

    I feel like the 1st and 2nd demo had unfair comparison to the 3rd just to prove the point "it's all in the rotation". You were barely kicking in the 1st and 2nd demo which can be sole reason to your hips sinking. As well as the arm stroke was noticeably better in the 3rd demo compared to the 1st where your arm was almost completely relaxed.

    I can’t really see a difference between your flat and corrected form. You seem to rotate plenty in what you say is flat. In the absence of video, how can I tell if my rotation is enough-i know for certain it’s not too much. I try to lead the rotation with the hips and let the shoulders follow. Great videos!

    • @cmillholland
      @cmillholland Рік тому

      The trick is to drive the arm, fingertips first, into rotation where you are rocking with the opposite hip rising and your body is in a good streamline. The sets up a strong catch and pull where you are using your large back and chest muscles and not your shoulder muscles.

    I love this channel as it gives the detailed nuances of swimming efficiently. Rotation is just one of those intricate details. It's not one of the things which most coaches concentrate on especially at the beginner's stage. Extending the arm stroke helps in getting that rotation. The trouble is where to stop it & breathing on the side disturbs the momentum of the right rotation as most beginners & intermediate swimmers over rotate & breath way too high combining the rotation & the head turn to breath. The trick is not to mix up breathing & rotating. Breathing is an independent step which let's us..well breath by deliberately doing a head turn & rotation should be done independently irrespective of the head turn to breath or not . Rotation needs the head to be still. This is profoundly felt when doing backstroke where the rotation is felt from the shoulders to the feet,however the head has to be still. Breathing in backstroke is not an issue & therefore the difference is evident. Be sure to apply that in freestyle.✌️

    • @vinanair5916
      @vinanair5916 4 роки тому

      Thanks Gaurav.That was much needed advice.Can you tell me how to practice the head remaining still and catching up breath without feeling breathless or tired soon? Has it got to do anything with the kick rising out of your hips?

    • @gauravjha8938
      @gauravjha8938 4 роки тому +1

      vina nair you should be efficient in kicking by the hips, it helps a lot for not being breathless & reduces the stress on your legs ,thus you are not easily tired . As for breathing correctly & adequately you should first of all know that the higher you try lifting your head, the more drag you are gonna create & drown a bit more too. Therefore, you have to breathe very swiftly by rotating you head to any side where the rotation is taking place. The head should move in the same way as you would move it when you are standing & trying to look to you left /right without moving the body. The surface of the water should be like the middle line till where you should rotate you head & inhaling by the mouth is quicker & more abundant ,do that swiftly before your arm stroke of the respective side.
      As for your head remaining still, try that while standing on your toes & looking at an object at your eyesight level,while moving your body left /right without losing the focus on what you see. You can only do that till a certain angle & that's the amount of rotation you would need in the water too. In the pool,backstroke is a very good exercise where your whole body rotates but not your head. Try it slowly at first & you'll get the hang of it.

    • @vinanair5916
      @vinanair5916 4 роки тому

      @@gauravjha8938 Thanks again.But, I have noticed that keeping my eyes at an angle is more helpful than looking perpendicularly towards the bottom,unlike in breaststroke. It enables me to glide smoother and rotate better.So by the head level you mean as when you are asked to pose for photographs with chin up or chin down nearly touching your neck as in breaststroke? Because though breathing also comes easily with head at an angle than perpendicular its slackens speed! Any suggestions about how to harmonise all these or is this technique wrong?

    • @gauravjha8938
      @gauravjha8938 4 роки тому

      vina nair You can definitely add a slight angle according to your comfort ,practice, requirements, situations etc but the general direction is perpendicular. You just need to approach the perpendicular angle. Everyone has a different comfort level & according to their build, motion, sense etc the angle is a bit alternating.
      I don't know what hinders your breathing without watching your technique, however the rotation in itself shouldn't pose any issues no matter whichever angle.
      As for losing speed, no matter which ever angle rotation you do, the speed takes a hit. It's just that you have practiced your strokes with a certain formation that makes you feel more comfortable with that motion & therefore the discomfort with other forms. That's why I said the head rotation should be done swiftly, the minimal time you take for the breath, the better. You should practice inhaling as quickly as possible & exhaling as slowly as possible.
      To synchronise everything you need to concentrate on your form & be very aware not to mess up the technique while doing so. Most people ask a friend, trainer etc to watch their technique & then practice to harmonise all the steps together. Ask someone to record your stroke to see what your form & technique looks like. Only then you can identify where you need to focus more on.

    I've noticed, as I've gotten more skilled, I'll rotate my shoulders enough to where my lead arm shoulder is dropped to my chin. As the opposite arm completes the stroke cycle and starts to re-enter the water I'll brush out with my lead arm while coming into the catch. This provides a brace against the water that assists the re-entering arm the leverage needed to rotate the new lead shoulder to align with the chin. And with practice has resulted in a nice S pull with good hip and shoulder rotation.or at least it looks that way to me.

    I think extending the arm helps a lot to achieve proper rotation. Have noticed thriathletes do not fully extend, for unknown reasons.
    About your question. As i understand release is part of the stroke before the exit and when the propulsion phase is over. To be honest i never gave it a thought. Think i got high release.

    For long distance and flat/calm open waters I'd rather have the arm as low as possible over the surface, with some overrotation to add glide with less effort ( see Adam Walker tech). For speed possibly a higher arm improves some momentum to the stroke, more effort and more speed.

    I notice your right recovery arm is straight. I was taught to be sure elbow is higher than wrist and hand to prevent shoulder injury. It doesn’t
    Look like you do this-will this cause shoulder injury?

    • @robertdavis4077
      @robertdavis4077 2 роки тому

      You’re right, Cindy. A straight arm recovery has higher rotational inertia. In other words it’s harder to do.

    I think rotating with the arms lower is easier but not too low as you will not be able to rotate.

    My comment is a little different and there may not be an answer which is the same for everybody. If I swim for 20 to 25 minutes a day, how long will it be before I notice some changes in my body? I am female and 79 years old. 🙄🙄 Thanks for any input.

      Hello Susan, great question. Based on meta-analysis, if you do three - six sessions a week of cardiovascular activity (swimming, walking, etc) for 30 to 60 minutes, you will significantly reduce visceral fat without being in a caloric deficit! Moderate or high intensity gives the best results and you will start to see a difference in about three weeks if you remain consistent. Enjoy your practice! Best, Coach Mandy

      @@SWIMVICE Thank you for your reply. I need to do longer swimming sessions but it will have to be little by little as I get tired. I am swimming for about 20 minutes a day most days of the week. I have made a commitment to myself to do this and I look forward very much to seeing the results you describe. ☺️☺️

    I'll be running out of energy when I swim. Solution???

    • @dumplingsistasty
      @dumplingsistasty 4 роки тому +2

      Maybe you are overusing your legs? The muscles in the legs and butt are the biggest so if you use them too much you will drain yourself from energy. Try to swim with as little motion as possible (without sinking with your legs) and see how that feels. You can also lose a lot of energy if your breathing is "bad". Maybe you are not breathing out completely before going in for the inhale? in that case there will be too much CO2 in your body and that will kill the swimming after a while. These are my tips as i have struggled with them myself before :)

      @SWIMVICE  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Paul I understand your struggle. I have some videos on breath control, increased drag, and the kick that could be where you are wasting your energy. I have them linked below:

      MaxxHeadroom have him relax with the breath and not rush so quickly this will help eliminate the abrupt movement. Keep it simple for now and get him to relax which is a huge priority. I’ll be posting more in the future as well! 🙂🏊🏼‍♂️ -Coach M

      @@SWIMVICE makes sense. The faster he goes the worse he gets. Starts watching his arm as it enters like it's the seconds hand on a clock follows it all the way in. Hard to break the habit when he swims on team and does it so much.

      Hi primuscus Typically over rotating and swimming flat happens with a straight arm. The release of the arm is still straight in the final demo but due to the timing of my arms the bend happens naturally only at the entry. I have this point discussed further in a couple of videos I linked below as well as the kick. When your rotation is balanced correctly, it is easy to have a two beat kick (what you observed as looking like I’m not kicking). When balance is not corrected due to poor rotation, the legs will kick more as a response to being out of balance. Here are a few of my earlier videos explaining those two points. Hope this clears up the confusion! 👍🏼🙌🏽🏊🏼‍♂️
