Question: I don't think I necessarily have any remarkably good or bad cardio (I don't do any dedicated cardio out of BJJ anyways), but I almost never gas out in rolling and have been told many times in classes, open mats, and competitions that I have a seemingly infinite gas tank. (Compare this to how I was humbled greatly upon taking a wrestling class). However I have always suspected/attributed that my BJJ cardio is actually just strength. I have an extensive lifting background before starting BJJ, so I tend to have a lot more muscle mass and strength than almost all my opponents. While muscular bodybuilder types have a reputation for muscling positions and gassing out, I try to be more technical and only use as much force as needed in every exchange rather than muscling. My guess is that since I'm stronger than most of my partners, I'm using a much smaller percentage of my strength than them in each exchange, so I can naturally last longer, similar to how - strong person might be able to do way more reps on a lift with the same weight than a weak person. Meanwhile in wrestling I gas out because there's a lot more explosive dynamic movements than BJJ haha. Does this make sense? Or am I tripping?

This makes perfect sense and you're probably right on the mark. I wish more people understood this concept

I agree. I’m stronger then most my opponents and they are saying I’m using a lot of power when I try to minimise actually. However I’m still gassed sometimes.
I still want to get better cardio.

I got 3:58 on the rower, guess I don't have to do cardio haha. Or should I still do something? Currently, train bjj 4 to 5 times a week, and lift twice a week.

Just because it isn't a glaring weak point doesn't mean it can't be improved somewhat!
How'd you recover after the assessment?
Adding in even 1 day of longer duration steady state cardio (30+ mins of about 6-7/10 effort) can move things in the right direction if it's still a concern!

@@ElectrumPerformance Took me a few mins to catch my breath. Thanks for the suggestion, I hate doing zone 2, but will power through.
