  • The Sparring Gloves Mitten is pretty much the standard HEMA Tournament glove. This episode is more of a guide to help you choose which cuff style to purchase for the Mittens.

    The ideal is both! After a repair on my long cuff SG Mittens, I ended up with a spare long cuff (shout out to Barbara for the quick work on the repair and even shipping the spare cuff back). I cut it up and mounted the pieces over the plastic wrists as hourglass cuffs. The result is great. I don't notice any issues in mobility but I really appreciate the extra protection on the wrists. If I'd buy new ones: hourglass cuff + forearm protectors...

    Great review. I have used the normal sparring gloves for 4+ years and they are close to end of life at this point. Have really been kicking around weather or not to go to the hour glass cuff. Thanks for the trough review/comparison.

    I've not used sparring gloves yet. I'm holding on to RDs for sidesword and SPES Heavies for longsword whilst I wait for Thokk.
    However my understanding is though that you are supposed to collapse the wrist completely before you put Sparring Gloves on.
    This means that they then only pop back out just enough to allow wrist movement.

    I always wonder if I got long cuffs if I could wear them under my jacket, so put the gloves on first and then the jacket goes on after but the zips would be a total pain. At that point though I may as well get the hour glass cuff and then wear light arm protection (like the koolbeans) under my jacket.

      I prefer the longcuffs since I'm using SPES jackets with the already tight and less padded forearm sleeves.

    Hi Phil! Looking at getting my first pair, and stumbled on to this video. Thanks for this! Just a question, would mittens work for sabres with simpler stirrup hilts? Would either variant have pros and cons for sabre? Am starting to get into Roworth, and I also looked at some of your Destreza videos :)

      Hey Michael! Sadly I can't say for all hilts, but for example Castille hilts may work. There are some makers that made their hilts fit this or red dragons. However sabers like Hanwei or cold steel probably would be too small. I believe the Kvetun should fit this glove.

      @@philswiftHEMA Thanks! Definitely getting a pair first, will just look for a saber afterwards (safety first!). Your vid helped me decide :)

    Do yours hurt your hands? The hourglass seem to hurt the back of my hand quite a bit when i open my hand

      @philswiftHEMA  4 роки тому +1

      Hey! I'm sorry to hear, I wonder if yours was made the right size, there should be a foam that is very very squishy at the back, and so it shouldn't hurt. I wear a liner glove under the glove and perhaps that is why I don't feel it. However, give it a chance because you also need to work it in.

    Maybe I missed this, but what size of glove is this? And how big are your hands? I'm debating between small and medium, and I think their hand length measurement picture is unclear

      I'm a small, I've also worn small for every glove, so I think it's pretty on point. I think the diameter around my hand is 20cm and my palm to middle finger is just 18cm

      Do you have any issues with the thumb? I got Hourglass Mittens 2 hours ago, and the thumb seems a bit short.

      Also, what about hits to the wrist (I mean I have forearm protectors so I can't wear that version anyway but just wondering)

    • @philswiftHEMA
      @philswiftHEMA  4 роки тому +1

      Hey sorry for the late reply! I don't recommend the specials for Longsword or anything that hits hard. The resin overtime will get soft or brittle. The forearm protectors are decent, not as good as rigid plates but good enough to not have your bones broken. I wear a hidden kydex plate underneath. Though I plan to make splints to go around the cuff. I prefer the cuff over spes forearm protectors, I find those too heavy and bulky for a small guy like myself.

      @@bobu5213 I'm waiting for my shipment of the Infinity gloves by Sparring gloves. But before this I would use the Sparring Gloves mitten exclusively. However, my club doesn't hit hard like others. It all depends on the caliber of intensity around you.
