TEACHING CHILDREN TO OBEY | Using a simple definition to help kids obey

  • Obedience. We all want it from our children! If only they would always obey... :) In this Mom Chat, I want to share the definition we have used to help our children learn obedience. It isn't a magic formula, but with consistency, it may help! Please read edit below...
EDIT: I briefly mention this in the video, but I just want to make sure it is very clear. This is NOT for parents who use "obedience" to control or manipulate their children. Also, our children are not expected to go around smiling and humming while they do their chores ;) It's ok to not want to do something! But what we do not excuse is grumbling, complaining or disrespect when asked to do something. If they respond this way, like I said, I would encourage you to talk with them and find out what's going on in their little hearts. They could be tired, hungry, or just be having an off day! Grace is very often extended :) Hugs to all of you mamas!

This is such an important message. I remember as a kid my parents lecturing me, and I would always complain and drag my feet, but deep inside I knew I needed it. As I grew older, my parents stopped lecturing me as much, and I began to miss the lectures, and then started getting into trouble at school. I will never forget the importance of those lectures from my parents and how much they helped me, even though I complained at the time.

I will definitely incorporate this quote in my home. I’m definitely a parent that said do as I say because I’m the boss. It’s wrong! Because they do have desire and choices. My son will be ten year old and I can see how my controlling parenting/helicopter cause a negative impacts. I’m current practicing mindfulness +God and I feel excited for the future.

Shirley Thank you so much for sharing this!! My husband and I loved the definition so much we’ve started using it with our children. We are a homeschooling family of 6 children, the oldest is in second grade down to twins age 17 months. I have so appreciated your mom chats and they have encouraged me and blessed me so much! Also your word of the year video!! I’ve heard of it so often but never tried it til this year after hearing your story. So thank you for investing in the lives of strangers through these videos! ♥️

Your running toward a busy street example was 100 percent correct....this might not be politically correct, but telling the toddler...."no more Johnny if a car hits you" seems to work...even at 2 years old a human has a self preservation instinct.

I have prayed to God and I've told him how I do not like yelling and being angry with my kids. Today I have felt like a super big failure as a mother. Our homes are very similar "right away, all the way, and with a happy heart" is our saying for our boys to understand what obedience looks like. And also we have one who is easily distracted, and we also have to have eye contact and he has to repeat it back. (even the repeating back he'll get distracted with) lol!! Glad you make a video about this. Sometimes its an area of confusion for parents who expect obedience and think they have it when they see only the action. Its hard though to get at the heart. :)

I'm 15 and I obey my mom to the max, she is the one that is in total control.
Everyday, I come home from school and the 1 st thing I do, is give her my phone...don't want any distractions, then I do my homework, then all the chores for that day, which must be done to my moms satisfaction. Then I do whatever she tells me to do with no back talk or arguing.
On the weekends, I do want she wants me to do, Before I have my "Free time"

I know you mentioned if the children disrespect by slamming the door, stomping, etc. and said "...that's just not allowed in our house". I totally agree! The problem is they do it anyway haha. Can you give any suggestions on discipline for that behavior to cease? We have been dealing with continual huffing, eye rolling, stomping. No door slamming but everything up to that! I don't pop on the butt anymore because I struggle with anger and don't want to continually discipline out of anger.

Can you share more about how you explain to your kids what it mean to do things cheerfully, why it is important and how it feels? It is a hard concept for adults to do things with a joyful heart and I struggle to explain beyond what that physically looks like like not rolling eyes and not stomping.

It scares me how much everyone values obedience. Whatever happened to being able to think for yourself, making your own choices, and not giving in to peer pressure? Does autonomy seriously threaten parents that much, that they think that they have to stamp it out of their kids?

Hi Rachael! I do have a child that used to struggle greatly with obedience, but now that they are older (7) I have seen almost a complete turn-around...but oh, the younger years were so difficult!! I actually think I will do a video soon on discipline. Every child is so so different, I'd have to give you so many examples of consequences! Many times I have prayed for God to give me ideas on how to discipline certain children because one way would not always be effective for each child. Some correct behavior with just a look, my older girls it's taking something away, when they were much younger we would spank...I will just need to film something!! Keep being consistent & love on that youngest one a whole lot! Hugs!

Maybe I missed it, but what is the consequence for disobedience at various ages?

Hi, this video was great. And I appreciate it sister. I’m sure you’re children are now trained up well. But I wanted to ask…in the beginning when you first started to train them up and they disobeyed, or even if they disobey now, how do you handle that? Do you use proverbs 13:24?
