TEACHING CHILDREN TO OBEY | Using a simple definition to help kids obey

- Obedience. We all want it from our children! If only they would always obey... :) In this Mom Chat, I want to share the definition we have used to help our children learn obedience. It isn't a magic formula, but with consistency, it may help! Please read edit below...
EDIT: I briefly mention this in the video, but I just want to make sure it is very clear. This is NOT for parents who use "obedience" to control or manipulate their children. Also, our children are not expected to go around smiling and humming while they do their chores ;) It's ok to not want to do something! But what we do not excuse is grumbling, complaining or disrespect when asked to do something. If they respond this way, like I said, I would encourage you to talk with them and find out what's going on in their little hearts. They could be tired, hungry, or just be having an off day! Grace is very often extended :) Hugs to all of you mamas!

This is such an important message. I remember as a kid my parents lecturing me, and I would always complain and drag my feet, but deep inside I knew I needed it. As I grew older, my parents stopped lecturing me as much, and I began to miss the lectures, and then started getting into trouble at school. I will never forget the importance of those lectures from my parents and how much they helped me, even though I complained at the time.
It's amazing how every aspect of the family dynamic is a manifestation of the relationship Abba craves to have with us.
I love this definition! Our littles are still learning to obey cheerfully and quickly, and I sometimes struggle with how to better encourage them in this. Thank you for sharing!
Aww, thanks so much for watching and commenting
I will definitely incorporate this quote in my home. I’m definitely a parent that said do as I say because I’m the boss. It’s wrong! Because they do have desire and choices. My son will be ten year old and I can see how my controlling parenting/helicopter cause a negative impacts. I’m current practicing mindfulness +God and I feel excited for the future.
Shirley Thank you so much for sharing this!! My husband and I loved the definition so much we’ve started using it with our children. We are a homeschooling family of 6 children, the oldest is in second grade down to twins age 17 months. I have so appreciated your mom chats and they have encouraged me and blessed me so much! Also your word of the year video!! I’ve heard of it so often but never tried it til this year after hearing your story. So thank you for investing in the lives of strangers through these videos! ♥️
Oh my goodness! Your comment blessed me so so much when I read it! You have your hands (and heart!) full too, don't you?! I'm so glad to hear that some of my videos have been an encouragement...that is the ONLY reason I started this channel. Thank you so much for watching and commenting. You have been an encouragement to ME
It would be so totally neat to meet you in person sometime! I love meeting other homeschooling moms, or even moms who don’t homeschool. We can learn so much from each other!!
Your channel is an answered prayer! God has blessed you - thankful you are sharing encouragement with other parents who are truly seeking God's will for their families! It's wonderful to see your consistency, it gives me hope that my consistency with my kids will be blessed by God! Your genuineness is inspiring 😊
Realistically, child proof each room...never leave a toddler unattended for more than 5 minutes.
'Delayed obedience is DISobedience'! YES! This is the comment that got me to subscribe! Thank you so much for the encouragement to be faithful in teaching our children God's ways. I believe he will help us and our children and bless our efforts!
Hi! Just found your channel and sooooo glad I did! I am a homeschooling mom and vlogger as well! You are absolutely delightful! Thank You for your beautiful smile, stories and heart. You have blessed me! Just subscribed and look forward to all of your videos!!!
Hi Sarah! Thank you so much for the kind words! I can't wait to check out your channel! Thank you so so much for watching, commenting and subscribing...hugs!!
Your running toward a busy street example was 100 percent correct....this might not be politically correct, but telling the toddler...."no more Johnny if a car hits you" seems to work...even at 2 years old a human has a self preservation instinct.
Oh, you have no idea how much I needed to hear this today. So thankful for this video!!!! Will implement those idea starting of NOW!
I'm so glad it came at the right time for you!! Hugs! xo
I like that you are honest in your video, that you don't present yourself as perfect. It's easier to relate that way:)
You are beautiful inside and out. Proverbs 31 strong woman who fears the Lord. You’re doing a great job 👏 God bless 🙏
I feel like I'm in mom school and I am so grateful. I've been watching all of your videos and taking literal notes. Thank you so much for your content. I wish I found you sooner!
Thank you so much! I really needed to know that I am not alone. You have been an encouragement. I have five children under the ages of 8. Each are beautiful and unique. I have prayed to God and I've told him how I do not like yelling and being angry with my kids. Today I have felt like a super big failure as a mother. I'm striving to be a proverbs 31 woman and in due time, I shall be well seasoned. Keep up the videos! Thank you again. ❤️
Your channel is so inspiring, you are wise beyond your years. Thank you for sharing.
Our homes are very similar "right away, all the way, and with a happy heart" is our saying for our boys to understand what obedience looks like. And also we have one who is easily distracted, and we also have to have eye contact and he has to repeat it back. (even the repeating back he'll get distracted with) lol!! Glad you make a video about this. Sometimes its an area of confusion for parents who expect obedience and think they have it when they see only the action. Its hard though to get at the heart. :)
Yes, yes, yes! You are a kindred spirit...lol! :)
I'm 15 and I obey my mom to the max, she is the one that is in total control.
Everyday, I come home from school and the 1 st thing I do, is give her my phone...don't want any distractions, then I do my homework, then all the chores for that day, which must be done to my moms satisfaction. Then I do whatever she tells me to do with no back talk or arguing.
On the weekends, I do want she wants me to do, Before I have my "Free time"
Please be honest, how happy are you with living like that?
Super blessed to find you on UA-cam ! This has been encouragement as a mother who struggles. It’s awesome your sharing all the wisdom God has given you. I have very little support around and right now God is using this to speak to me in this new season! 🙏💓
This is such a needed video! Thank you! This has given me the confidence to start today with this! I have a 8 and a 5 year old and I feel like all day is a yelling fight over the simplest things and I have not had any ideas on how to handle this and it is making me insane! I cannot thank you enough! Kepp the parenting videos coming please!
Oh my goodness...your words are such an encouragement to me! Thank you so much for watching and commenting. I can't tell you how much it blesses me to know that God is using these videos to encourage other mamas!! You've got this :) Hugs!!
Thank you for sharing your family tips. God bless you and the family and may he continue to use you in a mighty way.
The Lord brought me to this video today. I needed some encouragement in this area because I’ve been feeling a little defeated with our almost three year old. Thank you sister ❤️
It was a great idea for you to post this video about obedience; I was needing it lately; I have a 6 year old who struggles with obedience and I plan to implement your suggestions; I'd appreciate it if you did more videos like this in the future.
If I was your son...only thing I'd be doing is being at home doing what you tell me to do with no back talk or arguing.
I'd do all of the cleaning so you don't have to worry with it! I'd help out in all other areas.
My only happiness would be to obey you and make you happy!
I love the principal of obedience and blessing.
Yes, it's the part of obedience that I love to highlight for my kids
I love this definition of obedience so much! I watched this video almost 2 years ago and this definition has stuck with me ever since. I came back tonight to find it because it is one of my children's vocabulary words and I loved this definition so much! Thank you for sharing your heart! Miss your videos!
I am a homeschool mama of 5- but only 4 reside with me ages 10-11 months old and it is very hard to homeschool when your other half tells you every day you can’t do it to all different ages!!! So any help and encouragement would be greatly appreciated along with pointers……. Thanks fellow mama of homeschooler families
So nice to hear from a Christian mom. Yay
Love this! How do you teach a 2 year old to obey? I'm struggling with getting my toddler to listen and obey.
I’m struggling with my 4 year old
Same
Needed it. 🙏 a lot of works for sure but its for their best interest…
This video was wonderful! Thank you for sharing your wisdom! I have a whole page of notes just from this video alone. The revelation I got from hearing the way you described obedience in a way that children of all ages can understand was so great! I cannot wait to work through this with my children and help build that foundation of obeying mommy and daddy out of love. Thank you, again!
I just did a UA-cam search and found this video, as I've been having trouble in this area with my kids. Thank you so much for this video. It was very helpful, and I have just subscribed to the channel as well! God bless you and your family!

Thank you for sharing your wisdom! I have a teen and preteen and struggle so much with obedience! We are in our 1st year homeschooling and I feel more stressed when they don't work with me...
You have really helped me with this video!
I'm so so glad it helped a bit! It really is so tough when they work against us!
Thanks for sharing. I definitely struggle with this with my four year old. I appreciate you sharing your child friendly definition of obedience.
LOVE this video! Really needed to hear this in my season of life with littles!! ❤️❤️❤️
Kaysie, that makes me so so happy to hear. It's why I started the channel, with such deep hope that it would be an encouragement to moms. My youngest is almost 6, but I very clearly remember what those "little years" were like! Full of joy but also a lot of hard work :) Keep going, mama!!
thank you , I will listen to your teachings they seem to be helpful
Thanks for watching, Olga! That's my grandmothers name btw :)
Loved this encouraging video! I just found your channel yesterday and have been binge watching your content. 😏 I am also a homeschool mom and have three children under 7. Your videos, including this one, are so encouraging. Thank you for sharing your heart and wisdom ❤️
Welcome to the channel, Amber!! Thanks so much for watching and leaving such an encouraging comment! xox
You must be an amazing mom. Your advice is priceless.
Thank you for your tips! I have toddlers and I needed this encouragement! You are awesome!
Very timely video as I have been struggling a LOT lately and wearing myself out with constantly repeating instructions and dealing with disobedience.
Thank you for making these videos.
Oh, Amanda! Thanks for watching and commenting! It can definitely be so exhausting, especially in those early years of teaching them. Hugs to you mama! You got this.
I LOVE the definition you shared! It will be on our whiteboard this week!
Yay!! It makes me so happy knowing an idea is helping another mom! :)
Make sure you pair this with what healthy boundaries are and how to keep themselves safe. Without that this is conditioning them to be abused.
You are a wonderful inspiration, we miss you and your wisdom
This was fantastic and so helpful!!!
Thank you so much I was not taught this as a child. This has given me a better idea how to teach these values in our house hold!!
It blesses me so much to know that it was helpful to you!
This was very encouraging, thank you! I'm also a CC homeschooling mama of 4 kiddos (ages 6, 3, 2, and 2). The struggle is REAL some days! I was thrilled to stumble upon your channel, and feel like I've found a kindred spirit and source of encouragement.
Hi Bethany!! I was on the struggle bus many days especially when my kids were small, ha! Give yourself a lot of grace in this season...I just wish I could hug all the mamas with lots of littles and give them full nights of sleep, do their laundry for them and take them to coffee
I've just found this and I can hardly wait to watch the rest of your video's..... thank you so much... Blessings
Welcome, Kerry! :)
My heart needed this today. Thank you for sharing yours with truth and love.
I'm so so glad. I've prayed for God to use my channel to bring encouragement to other moms. It blesses me so much when it seems that prayer has been answered
Your videos are always so helpful. Im struggling with attitude with my eldest just now. It can be a battle! Thank you for sharing! God bless you and your family.
Thank you for this video. This is an eye-opener for me.
This is so good. I have a 3 year old and a 1 year old and I needed this so much. It is easy to get frustrated with toddlers lol but you have encouraged me.
It makes me so happy to hear that it's been an encouragement :) In my opinion, those toddler years are so important in laying a foundation but they can also be so exhausting. The fruit will be so worth it, mama. Keep going!!
@@ThisBlendedHouse thank you so much. I have noticed that if I have a positive and loving attitude my son is more likely to obey. Once I am frustrated we both get angry and it all goes downhill. So videos like yours are a great reminder for me to stay consistent and positive.
This was a great reminder! Thank you for the encouragement :)
You are so welcome! Thanks for watching, Micki :)
Love your saying, plan on implementing that tonight.
Very encouraging indeed. God bless you for these reminders. 😊 💖
I like these tips and find them helpful
Thank you for this encouraging video. I have 3 girls 11, 9, & 6. The two older ones are at the age were they want to see how far they can push me. 😬 This shows me that I need to work more on obedience and other habit training.
Please keep up these fantastic videos! 😊
Oh thank you! We have some girls very close in age! My older 2 are both 11 right now (Irish twins) and my youngest daughter is 7. Our kiddos will always test the boundaries and limits, won't they?! Stay consistent and don't budge, ha! ;) Thanks so much for watching and commenting!!
This is all great advice. Can you let us know how you discipline though for disobedience?
Super late to these videos but I've been binge watching today and subscribed.
I know you mentioned if the children disrespect by slamming the door, stomping, etc. and said "...that's just not allowed in our house". I totally agree! The problem is they do it anyway haha. Can you give any suggestions on discipline for that behavior to cease? We have been dealing with continual huffing, eye rolling, stomping. No door slamming but everything up to that! I don't pop on the butt anymore because I struggle with anger and don't want to continually discipline out of anger.
Thank you!! Thank you!!! For sharing your heart and story. I really appreciated all that you shared and it has encouraged me to not give up. This is the one area where I feel I stumble and get frustrated in but your tips and encouragement means so much! Thank you for helping refresh my perspective! Blessing to you and your family for this coming school year!
Great video! Great job!
I love the rhyme for obedience. Thanks so much!
You are so welcome! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Thank you so much. We were taught as kids to JUST obey. This brings a softer touch and lovingness to the same concept. and a two sided approach. Yesterday we have decided to officially homeschool my grade R and grade 2. Eeeeek. Grade R is busy I don't know how you cope with 5 kiddos.
Just found your channel. Loving it so far!
Oh my goodness, Anna! Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment
Can you share more about how you explain to your kids what it mean to do things cheerfully, why it is important and how it feels? It is a hard concept for adults to do things with a joyful heart and I struggle to explain beyond what that physically looks like like not rolling eyes and not stomping.
It scares me how much everyone values obedience. Whatever happened to being able to think for yourself, making your own choices, and not giving in to peer pressure? Does autonomy seriously threaten parents that much, that they think that they have to stamp it out of their kids?
Another great video!!!!
You are too sweet, Lydia!!
Amen 🙏
Thank you❤
What do I do if my child refuses to listen to what I have to say. Whenever I tried to explain something without getting mad he mocks me and starts to making noises and tells me I don't want to listen to that
Love this! I’ve been struggling in this area recently
So glad you found it helpful, Alisa! xo
Raise your hand if your mom made you watch this..........
Thank you
Please do a video on electronics. How do u limit it and what kind of issues and tips do u have?
This was so timely 😊 thank you for sharing! Do you mind sharing what your family’s consequences are for not obeying in this way? Our youngest is really fighting us on everything and just curious if you had a child that fought it for a while too? Thanks so much ❤️❤️
Hi Rachael! I do have a child that used to struggle greatly with obedience, but now that they are older (7) I have seen almost a complete turn-around...but oh, the younger years were so difficult!! I actually think I will do a video soon on discipline. Every child is so so different, I'd have to give you so many examples of consequences! Many times I have prayed for God to give me ideas on how to discipline certain children because one way would not always be effective for each child. Some correct behavior with just a look, my older girls it's taking something away, when they were much younger we would spank...I will just need to film something!! Keep being consistent & love on that youngest one a whole lot! Hugs!
I would find it interesting if you and The Parenting Junky did a collab specifically on this topic
I'll have to go and look and see who that is! :)
I just love your parenting style! Thank you for making this video!
Just found your channel. I also have 5 kiddos, 9 and under and the last 4 are 4 and under so I totally get the whole feeling of constantly training! I absolutely loved the way you explain obedience to your child/toddler! Thanks so much this blessed me
Oh Sarah! Those days are still so fresh in my mind. It gets so much easier in so many ways! I always wish I could just hug and sit down and have coffee with all the mommies who have a bunch of littles under-foot. My heart is for you sweet mamas doing the exhausting work that is required in the little years. Hugs to you and thanks so much for watching and commenting
Thank you I really appreciate this.
GOod idea i used it in my essay first draft
Super helpful as my kids are having a hard time lately!!😫😩
I'm so glad! Motherhood. Is. A. Tough. Job. You got this mama!
Thank you for sharing this!! 💞
And thank you for watching!!
OBEY ME!
Maybe I missed it, but what is the consequence for disobedience at various ages?
Nope, you didn't miss it! Didn't share :)
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
New Sub! I have a channel as well and have felt led to start sharing more! I agree with you on Obedience! Great true message!
Thank you! And you absolutely should share more! :)
Hi, this video was great. And I appreciate it sister. I’m sure you’re children are now trained up well. But I wanted to ask…in the beginning when you first started to train them up and they disobeyed, or even if they disobey now, how do you handle that? Do you use proverbs 13:24?
Thanks and God bless you.
My 4 year old doesn’t care she won’t listen I do that every day all my 4 year old does is hit me and bite me even when I’m nice about how I talk to her
useful info for all the mum
We nerd to obby to god 😯😯😯
