I just wrapped up my last year teaching Kindergarten...7 years in all! (I explain why 7 in the video :) ) And I'm legitimately sad! I LOVE Kindergarten. However, I know that Kindergarten can be an intimidating year for new homeschooling mamas! I'm hoping these 8 thoughts I've gathered for you can help make the transition into your first year of homeschooling just a little smoother.

Shirley

Thanks for the video. Don't forget that Dad's home school, too.🙋🏻♂️
Right😂 good luck man
I hear you, brother!
Agreed! I work 5 to 6 days a week (nightshift) and take care of my boys during the day. I live off of 4 hours of sleep a day!
WELSBY ROOTS God Bless you💜
Thank you for that!
I taught both my kids to read with the 100 lessons book. It really makes it stress free. Short easy lessons. Perfect for kids who have attention issues as well.
Dad here, trying to learn how to homeschool my daughter before shes of age.. I just noticed you ony said mom's! Dads are here, too!
I am leaving my job at the fire department to homeschool our youngest while my wife works. Thank you for such a great video! Your tips really gave me some
perspective. I am by no means an enlightened generalist so I will definitely check out your suggested curriculums and try to keep things simple.
Good for you. Get a library card and READ alot!!
And Dads. I'm 6 years alone with my child after his mom left us behind at birth. Traditional school kids can be so unkind already in kindergarten. So he I go sacrifice and rearrange my life to ensure he gets the most in life from what I have available.
His name is River.
River is a lucky boy. ❤️
@@angelicaconrad4247 thank you. And I try to replace the " lucky " word in life with the word "blessed"
Yes, blessed is the perfect word. You two are blessed to have each other. Children really do bring out the best in us. ❤️

I love the name River
I'd love to see a video about homeschooling when you still have smaller toddlers/ babies at home who are not school aged.
Have had several mamas ask this! I'll def try to make one about that!
Totally need that. I have small kids that need to start, plus toddlers and a newborn.
Yes, please! We are planning on homeschooling in the fall because of coronavirus, and I'm curious how to keep my soon to be 2 year old entertained and involved
I need this! My kindergartener has a 2 1/2 year old brother.
Yes I need that
I love you and your channel....every time you say, "Hello, sweet moms" I seriously take a big breath and feel so relaxed...its like after a long day with the kids I can refuel here with someone who is doing this life too....ty for being a support system.
This will be my first year homeschooling, and I'll have a Kindergartener! Thank you for this! ❤
Welcome to homeschooling! Kindergarten is truly such a fun year...I hope you both enjoy it! :)
This is probably one of the best videos I have seen! You definitely helped ease my mind on Kindergarten this year - and I've homeschooled for 6 years!
This was so great! I’m trying to convince my sister to homeschool. Her son starts kindergarten this fall and this was the perfect amount of information to get us started researching. Thank you!!
I LOVED Liberty’s Kids even as a preteen! Thank you for reminding me about that wonderful series!!
ha! You're welcome! :)
This was helpful. I’m so over whelmed, but you really helped me calm down. Thank you !!
Loved this!! I feel totally clueless at how to structure kindergarten homeschool... Thanks so much!
Such great tips Shirley! You can tell him that you are a mom who loves what she does and you do a great job! I also have a degree in elementary education and I I'm starting my eighth year of homeschooling. My oldest is going into 7th grade but my third is going into kindergarten this year. She is my last and I, over the years, have learned exactly what you said today. Reading and math and writing and a whole lot of play and snuggles it's exactly what my kindergartner needs. I definitely wish I would have known that with my first but I'm thankful to have this opportunity with my third and I can still create fun play for my oldest as well and make learning fun and not just all work! Thanks again for your encouragement! I pray you have a wonderful year!
I'm so glad to hear that you agree!! And I think it's great for new moms scrolling the comments to read about some of the lessons we've learned along the way. Sounds like we have lots in common, Jennifer ;)
I’m so glad I found this video - so encouraging! We’re about to start homeschool kindergarten for my oldest and I’m quite nervous but really, really excited!
How did it go!? This is the boat I’m in right now
Thank you VERY much for sharing your experience and advice! We are just starting to figure out homeschooling for our oldest daughter, turning 4 this year. It is so encouraging to have other moms like you to learn from! I love the curriculums you recommended. It is hard decide in the sea of options, so thanks for those! God bless you!
This is one of the best videos with REALISTIC AND USEFUL advice!
How am I just now finding your channel?! New sub here!! Thank YOU for this video. We are almost half way through Kindergarten and expierenced burn out just before winter break. We use the 100 easy lessons too and I'm shocked as to how effective it is! My kinder is now reading Dick and Jane books 😊 This video was a breath of fresh air for me. I plan to change a few things up after our break to be more relaxed and flowing. Focusing more on routine, reading, math, and writing. Thanks for encouraging me!!
Yay! Welcome to the channel! Thanks so much for watching AND commenting. It makes me so so happy to hear you found some encouragement in this little space here on UA-cam :)
Reading writing math. Love that! Just play and read with them, how great is that
Love your enthusiasm! Kindergarten is so filled with sweetness!
Love what you said about giving children time to just be 💜💜💜 I agree 100% kids need time to play and be out in nature, no electronics during the day I love it! I'm sure you were an AMAZING teacher and obviously you are a wonderful mother
Thank you! Your videos always leave me with a smile on my face.
Makes me SO glad to hear that, Heather. Thanks so much for watching :)
Great video! Thanks! I’ve never thought to get “tanks” for habitats, that sounds fun!
Thankyou for this😄....these videos are so helpful in this season of a starting out homeschooler
It truly makes me SO HAPPY to hear that mamas are finding the videos helpful!! It's my heart and why I even started the channel. Thanks for watching and commenting Cynthia! xo
Thank you so much for this!! Scheduling playtime really was something that I need to hear and act on. God bless you! I appreciate your channel!
I'm so glad you found something you can apply! :) & thank you! xo
Awesome tips, mama! Fellow homeschooling mama as well! You are so right...there are SO MANY curriculum choices out there.. do what works for you and your family! Best advice ever!!! My youngest is now in 1st grade and I cannot believe it!
Sooo many! I NEVER want to assume that because something will work for us that it will work for everyone :) My youngest is entering first grade too and I can't believe it either!! xo
Thanks for the great information! I have appreciated 100 easy lessons, Reason for Handwriting, and The Good and the Beautiful as well!
I would like to see you homeschool 1st grade and what you expect your kids to master at that level💐
this was awesome! I totally agree that if you just keep reading aloud to your child, they will learn to read organically. My son is going to be a Kinder kid in September 2020 and we are seriously considering homeschooling.
We just finished first homeschool year of kindergarten, so glad to see this and help me see how we did last year, with a new born was not easy. But I’d love to learn about teaching 1st grade.
Very encouraging and sweet. God bless you and yours!
I was looking for this type of video. This is my first time homeschooling and my Son is in kindergarten.
Yay! Welcome to Kindergarten! It is truly such a fun and special year :) Enjoy your days loving on and learning with your little guy!
This was so inspiring and encouraging!! I am so excited to teach my kids even more now.. Thanks! :)
Ah! Makes me so glad to hear :)
Yeeeeeees more videos like this and with kindergarten curriculum specifics and details please
I love watching your videos! I didn't know you used to teach Kindergarten! Last year was my 6th and final year teaching Kindergarten at a public school. We took a financial leap of faith and I now am homeschooling for my first year with my daughter who is now a Kindergartener. Your videos have really encouraged me in my new homeschool journey! Thank you!
So exciting!! I hope you both have a wonderful Kindergarten year!! :)

This is just what I needed today thank you!
We are beginning our homeschool journey this fall with 7 kids from headstart to 11 grade ♥ thank you so much for this helpful video

I do think routine is important. My son needs it or he has anxiety. I have to have all the assignments written on the board so he can check it off as he goes. It also helps with independence. Yes, even at kindergarten... I do help him read.
Thanks for sharing. I am not home schooling (my oldest is 3) but I still found this valuable because I am now doing childcare in my home. Lots of good ideas for what I can do with the kids.
yay! Glad you were still able to apply it!!
So many wonderful helpful ideas for parents who want to teach their children. I wish there had been the resources out there when our children were in school.
Thank you, Karen!
I can definitely see you as a kindergarten teacher! I will be doing K with my son next year, but it will only be my 2nd year of hs. New sub💜
Welcome Vanessa! ha! I have definitely really enjoyed all my years teaching Kindergarten. I hope you and your boy have a great year next year!
Great video and wonderful ideas! Thank you!
Such a helpful video!! Thank you 🙏
Thank you ❤️
All of your thoughts were very helpful! My Kindergartener (Joshua) will be 5 in December, but he is so advanced that he was begging to start school. He actually started his math in June because he just couldn’t wait and is soaring through it (math lover like me 💁🏻♀️)!
Also, Joshua absolutely loves Liberty’s Kids...he sings the theme song all. the. time 😅
That was how my second was! She's 11 now and was ready early and has proven to excel academically through her young life :)
Thank you! Greatly appreciated it!!
Best homeschool advice video🙌🏼
Late response, but thank you!! xo
Very informational. Thank you!
Very helpful! Thank you!!!!
I would love to home-school but I have to work. My son goes to a Christian school though ... You are blessed. I like your UA-cam, you inspire me. ❤️
A Quiet Praise I so understand! Homeschooling isn’t a big thing here in the NL.. our boys go to a Christian school and preschool ( two days ) also and I am a sahm
What I am planning to do ( our youngest is 3,5 years )is to do some homeschooling like learning the alfabet, handwriting and some math with blocks. I combine learning the alfabet with bible verses ( check Pinterest for ideas)
All printables I got from Pinterest.
Plan to start this Monday when my oldest starts school again after summer. This way I still have something to do with their education!
A Quiet Praise I respect that! I do know some moms that work and also homeschool. It’s doable! Don’t be discouraged! Homeschooling is not school, Monday to Friday 8-3. Homeschooling can be what you want it to be. It could be evenings, weekends, couple of hrs a day, etc. It’s flexible. If you feel called you can do it!
I'm a guy. You called me "mama"
but it's funny and cute
In the same boat here lol. But I found this video very useful. I just bought the Liberty Kids.
Thank you!! I'm praying so much about homeschooling...I have a 4th, 2nd, and almost kindergartener. During this quarantine I've really lived having my kids home and actually cried when I heard schools might open again. I have thought so often about homeschooling and often felt scared or intimidated but after watching a couple of your videos I feel way more encouraged that maybe it wouldn't be as hard as I am thinking. Thank you! I have a question about CC- do the kids get to apply the memorization to say, their reading, or discovery....or is it just the kids memorizing facts? I have friends in CC who love it but I don't know if my kids going from a public school start to CC would like just memorization... wondering your thoughts? Thx again!😊👍
I love liberty's kids!
This video was really helpful!
Thanks Dusty :) I'm so glad you found it helpful! xo
Awesome video!!!! You're awesome!!
You're sweet Morgan...thank you! xo
As a kindergarten teacher, this year has been an adjustment. My students are distance learning. Still, I teach the best grade ever so I can't complain.
We use horizons math too and love it. The spiral method seems to work well for retention of the information. I also used horizons phonics and reading for Kindergarten through 3rd grade as well. I honestly think it doesn’t matter which phonics/reading curriculum you choose as long as you are consistent. If you stay the course with any curriculum they will learn to read.
Your energy Captivating.
Great video thank you!
Thanks for watching! :)
Just got teach your kid to read today !!! Doing masterbooks simply k for math and English
Any tips for homeschooling a kindergartner when both parents work full time opposite shifts ? And me personally who will be doing most of the schooling works overnight. I feel exhausted and don’t know how to keep up energy to be the best for my child.
I’m in Virginia also and I’m going to homeschool my Kindergartner this year, wish me luck
Thank you for making this video!
Would you recommend CC curriculum for 4 & 5 year olds or just stick with the 3 basics you mentioned?...
This is our first year for kindergarten homeschool and two older kids in public school.
Hey! When you bought the Horizon's Math curriculum, did you also buy and use the teacher's guide book?
Thanks for the great suggestions as always!! You mentioned in a previous video that your kids do quiet time on their beds in the afternoon. My youngest is phasing out of naptime and I’m intrigued to know what you suggest for quiet time activities on their beds other than reading books/looking at pictures. I have a 7 y/o and 4 y/o. I’ve been allowing my 7 y/o to play educational apps during naptime but I would love to know your thoughts on this...do yours have screens during quiet time? Thanks so much and God bless your beautiful family!
Hey Melissa! We personally do not do screens at all during the day, not even during quiet time. When I noticed my kids phasing out of sleeping during quiet time, they are encouraged to read but I also allow them to play quietly in their rooms or wherever their little assigned spot around the house is (our kids share rooms so I split them up so that it actually ends up being "quiet" time for them, and ME, ha!). I'll play Adventures in Odyssey or other similar audio series, I got my 9 year old son a blank comic book and he likes to work on creating comics during that time, my 8 year old girl will play with her toys, and overall, they will play with pretty much any of the toys I talked about in the video! My older girls have gone back to mostly reading or now sometimes they'll fall asleep!
My oldest is 4 and already writes his name and can spell ans write many words as well as read can count to 100 in english and to 20 in spanish and he knows counting by 10s. Hes been doing this for quite a while he just turned 4 in Feb. Im just not sure where to begin. Im not sure if we are homeschooling just yet but im afraid to send him to public school. I want him to be prepared on all levela and i know hes a bit advanced right now academically but he has to learn the other areas like social skills and being able to be in an actual classroom setting. I know he will do well and is ready but i just dont know what to do for homeschooling and how to develop an approved curriculum that will allow him to learn properly (im mot sure if im making sense) any advice to start with an advanced learner. My 2 year old is advanced as well but he has a while before school whereas my oldest will be starting next year (fall 2021)
I am currently thinking about my youngest. She turns 5 in July, is enrolled in PRE-K, but has a speech delay and is not reading. Having my oldest gone through Kindergarten last year; I have reservations about subjecting my daughter to that Kindergarten. I know she could not do what my son did last year. She is no where near that level. I want to give her the gift of time, but I also want to help her learn to read, write, and math concepts. The state I live in allows me to keep my daughter home for an extra year if wanted. I just not sure where to begin. How do you structure days? I honestly miss the Kindergarten I had growing up. Kindergarten now is like 1st/2nd grade when I was younger.
Love my coop!!!
I loved this video. So you don’t think the all about reading curriculum is necessary then? I bought the new TGATB curriculum which focuses on learning to read. I also found Treasure Hunt reading which is an Orton gillingham style of teaching for free online. I’m quite torn on which to use.
I liked the Masterbooks Kindergarten Math
Thank you so much for sharing this! We just started homeschooling with CC this year, but my son is not quite kinder age (he turns 5 in January). You said you focus mainly on reading, writing, and math for kindergarten. Does that mean you don't enroll them in CC until later? We are enjoying CC so far, but I'm interested in your honest input. You always give such excellent advice.
Each family is so unique :) When my oldest was 5 it would not have made sense for me to enroll her in CC and drag along the younger 4 and keep them in nursery, so I would not have put her in. My youngest was in CC when he was 4 and it made perfect sense for us because all his older siblings were also in Foundations. I think CC is a great supplement for a Kindergartener, but they won't be learning those core subjects there. So if it works for your family financially and for the other kids, go for it! If it doesn't, I wouldn't worry about it one bit about enrolling him :)
Hi! Would you please send me the name of the books 📚 that you mention in the video!??? The ones that you say are the best !?? Please??
what do i need to sign up for to just do the 3 subjects in kindergarten?
Should I use TGTB k with that 100 lessons book?
Can you share the title and author of the book you mentioned about the power of touch and love in learning?
Thank you Shirley! Love your channel!
Thanks Crystal! It's a historical fiction book, however, it is based on the life of the author's mother and her experiences. The book is called Christy by Catherine Marshall :)
yea im a dad tyvm.
Great video. Do you have tips for homeschooling a child with adhd?
Momma needing help. Our 5 yr old was suppose to start kinder and we’ve now been told virtual is no longer an option he’s extremely high risk and can’t figure out what curriculum to use 🥲😭
Please upload more videos.
Hi moms, my son is starting school next year but i would love to homeschool him and I’m wondering how does it work? Is it hard? He will start kindergarten. Please let me know how is it. Thanks moms
Where in Va are you? Im in Culpeper can you help me please. My son is 4yrs old and missed the cut off for Kindergarten by 2 days. So I wanted to homeschool him this yr. I feel like a fish out of water.
Hi, could you tell me how do si get collabs? I loved your video.
I have jusy learned that in Wisconsin a child does not necessarily have to go to school untill 6 years old. My son is 5 and he is in kindergarten but due to school being virtual i am taking him out and homeschooling him and i was told he doesnt need to be in school but its my option as a parent. 🤯
Thank you for this, it has been so helpful! Do you have any resources to help with children who have a speech delay?
Oh, I sure don't. But where I'm from, kids receive free speech therapy through the public school they would attend. You should definitely look into that!
@@ThisBlendedHouse ok I will thank you so much! We're new-ish to Virginia so it's hard finding services or places when your not from around here
MOMS AREN'T THE ONLY ONE'S HOMESCHOOLING THEIR CHILDREN. why is this for moms. this bothers me. im a dad and i dedicate my entire life towards my sons growth and education
I'm sure this video is suitable for dads also. Typically moms are the homeschoolers, but dads are starting to take on that role also. I am absolutely certain the author meant no harm in stating this was for moms.
I understand you SmithLee_ same here.
I was feeling pretty insulted as well smithlee. Unfortunately that is how the world views so many situations when it deals with children and family life. As a single father it really upsets me.
You are pointing out a growing trend. I'm a man and choose to start Homeschool Advisor in Tennessee.
Start your own channel. If you can't beat them join them
I have a issue my daughter is half deaf(one ear does not work well) and shes four and can barely speak and shows little interest in learning the most she can say is no,yes, and food how do you teach them to speak or does learning to speak and reading sorta mesh together in lessons.
not a mom but thank you
Thank you for this video! I am starting kindergarten with my second child and she is struggling with the reading. I’m trying to decide if I should just back off for awhile or take a different approach. 🤷♀️
My now 9 year old son struggled to read and I did exactly what you said, I backed off for some time...he just wasn't ready as early as his sisters were. I've also taken different approaches with him than I did with his older sisters!
Home & Arrows -
Any suggestions on how to work on sight words?
From another former Kindergarten teacher...phonemic awareness activities will really help! They have to be able to manipulate words and sounds auditorily before "reading" is going to take off. Teachers Pay Teachers has some great resources!
Jerilyn Shackelford - thank you for the suggestions!
Are you apart of classical conversations or just apart of a co-op that is based on classical learning?
Hi, I am a kindergarten teacher. What type of camera you using?
Hi new I'm completely new to homeschooling and want to start my 5yrs old niece immediately. I checked out the resources you suggested, which are amazing, but wish to keep religion out of it until she expresses a desire for it herself is there anything like the good and the beautiful without the bible scriptures. It would be much appreciated 🙏🏼
I'm sweet but not a mom corona virus mad me a teacher as well
Dad's also home school.
Homeschooling dads too
When I started my channel I felt God calling me to encourage moms. If dads glean anything, awesome! But my channel unapologetically is targeted to mothers :)
Loved this have 6 and did not even sign my son up for kindergarten this year cuz of covid rules. Alot of my logic thoughts match with ur tips not to gain confidence in exercising them. I have a midfle school kids and a high school 10th grader how do I teach them. They have fallen so behind. Electronics have taken over. Help

how many hours for teaching per day?
I’m curious what your thought are on joining CC as a co-op in kindergarten. Is it engaging and fun for the kindergartener or would you recommend waiting until they are a bit older?
It all depends on your child, your family dynamics and your family's goals! My oldest was very outgoing and enjoyed a co-op at 5 but her sister under her was very content being home. :)
Home & Arrows thank you for your reply :) by the way, I just discovered your Etsy channel, and you have such beautiful things! Thanks again.
What do you recommend for those that can't afford all the curriculum? I have 6 kids and it's tight right now.
I believe The Good and The Beautiful offers free downloads of their curriculum. Hugs mama! It can be expensive AND tough homeschooling and living off of one income! xo
Easy Peasy is a free one for Pre K through 12
My younger brother need to go kindergarten in in 2 months so I want him to get good grades
How do you encourage your kids to play alone or with siblings? My 4 year old won’t play until I sit down with him. We have all the toys you mentioned and he refuses to do anything but follow me around
Unfortunately I really can't speak to this :( Playing without me is one thing I don't have to encourage my kids to do. Maybe your little guy just really loves being with you!! ;)My kids are also very close in age so maybe it is different when siblings aren't as close in age? Hugs mama!
Courtney, I have this same problem. My middle children are 3 and 4 years old, and it is a struggle to get them to entertain themselves. My honest opinion??? I personally gave them way too much screen time leading up to now. I was a working mom in the early years, and I was so exhausted when I got home, I would turn the TV on and let that entertain them while I cooked dinner and tried to keep up with the chores. Things are different now, but I feel that affected their ability to be creative and entertain themselves.
