I'm 11 but I watched thus whole video to cook this all alone but with guidance
My son went fishing this morning and stopped by to give us a couple huge fish. He was in the process of filleting the fish and began putting the head, tail, etc. in a garbage bag. I said "Oh no, what would Mary do?" I grabbed my biggest slow cooker and placed the heads, tails, skin in the cooker. I got the onions, celery, carrots, and threw them in. My son said, "Ewe, Mom, what are you doing? You can't eat that." I told him, "No, but we can drink it like Mary would do." My husband and I love you.

I sent my husband a text (while he was at our local supermarket) with a picture of chicken feet and I told him to ask them for it... a while later he replies, "they dont carry this "disgustingness' " lol! @@kirannathani9123 Hi, Kiran. No, I didn't remove the skin. There's collagen in it. The broth will be strained anyway, so no worry.
I'm in the uk and I don't have a slow cooker. I cook my bone broth in a large pot on the gas stove, but even on the lowest setting, it's still too hot and my bone broth is quite thin. However, today I had an idea I'd like to share. I have turned off the gas and placed a tealight in its glass holder under the cooking pot, just to the side of the gas burner. It's working a treat and is much cheaper than using the gas. X

Should have listened all the way thru because roasted 10# of leg quarters and began a pot of bone broth without listening to you, then I loaded the video and I used too much water and not enough goodies for flavor. However, I am going to proceed and maybe have the best chicken broth, ever! I am diabetic, and I will keep making this each month until I get it right! As always, thank you, Mary! So here's a twist hope it gives a chuckle. I stopped eating meat at 14-15, now 67 i have two kitties 19 & 17 with health issues. So a carcus or other bones had to purchase. So, just finished putting it all together with Mary and hope it is successful for improving the health of - yes, my kitties. All done kitty compatible of course. Love Mary, meow.

Looks so good! One of my favorite chefs always covered raw bones with water, brought to a simmer until the scum had risen to the top, then thoroughly rinsed the bones before returning to the pot and adding aromatics and seasonings. This really worked in producing a clear broth and reducing the scum that came to the top.

Being a full time parent is definitely a full time job that requires skill, experience, innovation, patience, and love of course! Ideally, in a monetary society, it would make sense that the state financially sponsors or provides a periodic stipend to all "domestic engineers" for their role in raising the next generation. Absolutely hands down the best how-to vids on youtube....learning more than I thought I knew...lol! The W meats you recommend are no doubt quality but only the rich (1%) will be able to purchase 1 whole 4lb chicken for $35. I still can't believe it.
Hi Samantha, Oh my goodness!! That is very expensive for a chicken. We can buy whole chickens here in the US for as low as 99 cents per pound. So it is possible to buy a basic chicken for about $5. You can enjoy the roast chicken and then use the Caracas’s to Make Bone Broth, Love, Mary❤️🤗❤️

My way of eating is Keto, so this is going to be a money saver for me. My dogs got the leftover carrots and bits of chicken. 😁

I do not have the capacity to store so much bone broth but I do make 1 carcass at a time. I had wondered why it was inconsistent. Turns out I was boiling it too hard. Thank you for helping me improve my bone broth.
Thank you for your demonstration for chicken bone broth. I do agree that using garlic when cooking chicken does change the taste of the chicken. I really do not know why it does that but I learned early on to not add garlic when you are cooking chicken. According to taste you can add it on when it is ready to eat.

Hi sweet Lady! Our store had chicken legs and thighs for .49 a pound. So I'm making and canning broth/stock. I've roasted the chicken pieces, de boned them,( chicken pot pie for supper tonight.) Some simmer for 36 hours , some simmer for 4 hours. Why such a difference in times? Is it stock verses broth? I'm not necessarily making bone broth because I heard you say that it doesn't hold up to the heat. Love your videos, and have learned so much.!

Bone broth is very healing to the gut and my gut really needs help. I’m planning on doing a bone broth fast for 3 days. When I’m hungry, I drink only bone broth or water. It’s either bone broth or sardines. I will drink chicken bone broth. 😊

Hi Mary! You are a delightful and comforting teacher to watch. Just discovered your channel and have the chicken bone broth on the stove right now. Thank you for your in depth coverage. I’ve been spooked to make this because I have read if not done properly it can make one ill. Quickly cooling and refrigerating is key I read. Also, your technical advice of using a thermometer is valuable to safety and gel production . Additionally, I found smoked organic chicken ($7.99) and organic chicken feet (6 for $2.27 here in CA) at Whole Foods. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I will next use a Cosori pressure cooker to compare results with the identical ingredients and see what my family prefers. Based on your actions, I have contacted Cosori for cooking recommendations. I appreciate your robust discussion. Take care!

Thank you! I’m making broth with our thanksgiving Turkey carcass… do you add the skin? Also when you add the onion skins sometimes they have mold! I’m assuming you have to be careful not to add moldy onion skins. sorry for the weird questions, I haven’t been cooking that long 😂 😬

We just processed meat chickens. I cut up a few and bagged. I kept the back and necks along with feet. How would you roast those parts so they can be used for chicken bone broth? Just salt, pepper and garlic before roasting? Yes we saved the feet and I packaged in groups of 4. Thank you for all your ideas 😊
Great question. I would just use a little salt and pepper and then roast them at about 350°F until they become nice and golden but I wouldn’t use any garlic only because I find it takes on an off flavor when it’s simmered for so long and bone broth. Love, Mary

Great question. I just bring it up to a boil and then quickly turn it down to a low simmer. Hope this helps clarify. Hi Mary, I am enjoying your videos so much. I am making this recipe today, actually I’m in the simmering process. I will let you know how it came out. My goal is a good gelatinous broth so we will see. I’m thankful for all the videos and the amount of priceless information you share with us. I can read the Bible for hours but don’t ask me to read nutrition books.... and why would I do that, we have you! :) I’m doing it without the chicken feet bc Publix does not carry it but I decided to order it from US Wellness Meats so we will see. I love love ox tails, had I known I was able to get gelatin from all the ox tails I’ve eaten, my gut would be sparkling right now! Anyway, thanks again! 🥰 ps I have the same pot in the mustard color.

Excellent video - thanks! But I have a question: If you only put in enough water to cover, and then you cook it for 6 hours, doesn't a lot of that water evaporate? Do you keep adding water to replace what evaporates?
Great question! Do not worry. You will be simmering this on the lowest setting and yes, there will be some evaporation but not a lot - but you want there to be some evaporation as it helps to concentrate the bone broth. Do not add any extra water. Love, Mary

I read on google that collagen from bone broth help with arthritis in the knees and help heal and prevent DDD. If I may ask how much do you drink every morning? My husband has both arthritis and DDD and I really want to start making this to help him as much as I can.
Hi Kathy, Great question! I usually drink about 12 ounces every AM and then I also use bone broth in my cooking in place of water when making soups, stews, and cooking grains including rice. Love, Mary

Love this video. I added ACV to the bones and water and let sit for an hour and after cooking the bones are soft! This broth is for the dogs but I'll try to make sure the broth is well strained. I always get gelatinous broth anyway though. I'm also planning to powder broth for the dogs. Can I still use veggies as long as I strain everything? (Less the onion!)

Mary I have a question, I am terrible dry and frizzy hair and have been told to make bone broth. I live in India and have never heard of this bone broth. I do not possess a slow cooker and electricity is very high in India, besides I only have a pressure cooker and definitely not want to make use of unending use of hours. Please tell me how this bone broth will help,will it help constipation and dry and frizzy hair. Please bear with me for asking such questions but I feel so comfortable asking you because you are the only one who keeps to your word that you like to help and you surely help. Hello dear lady..had to butcher a couple more roosters and already had 2 carcasses in freezer so they wouldn't all fit in my slow cooker this tip so I reflected back to your stovetop version. Sorry...question...do you feel pressure canning the bone broth will break down the gelatin is why you freeze it instead. Hugs blessings joy and health
What do you do with the veggies you strained out? Compost? or do you cook with them?
I stick mine in the crockpot on low over night and let it simmer.... I have one going now 😊 yes, with chicken feet! Just got our annual chicken, been canning and cooking all weekend.

I have been watching few videos on how to make homemade chicken broth as i have saved n froze some veggies and chicken carcass to make some. I love making homemade chicken tortilla soup but usually buy the broth...this time going to make my own. This was very helpful thank you. Also very relaxing...even my husband said that as he listened while i watched lol he said "i like her she is very soothing". These are the type of videos i like to watch while going to bed as the talking soothes and relaxes me. I do have a question..How long is the fat you save for cooking good for in fridge? I can save in a mason jar and use to sautee veggies, or add to chicken/ground turkey dishes. I have never done that either but seems like would be flavorful.

Does the white wine add any flavor to the broth? Is there an after taste? Can broth be made without it? Or does the vinegar, even just the 1/4 cup, give any odd flavor?

Ms. Mary, can I make this without the chicken feet? I'm a first time chicken owner so it kind of makes me feel weird to use them even though I know they aren't coming from my pretty birdies.
Not sure what went wrong
Used an 8qt stainless steal stockpot, 3 roast chicken carcasses, 6 chicken feet, a bag of veggie scraps, fresh onion, carrots & celery, 2 bay leaves, some peppercorns, and 1/3 cup white wine vinegar, water to just cover when I pushed the veggies down a bit, let that soak for 1 hour, then on the stove for 6 hours.
Result - no fat, no gelatin - just liquid like stock
I know my new electric stovetop has terrible heat control (which is a problem with almost everything I try to simmer). When I turn it down to the lowest possible setting (just before it turns off) it still produces enough heat to keep things at high simmer (even if I use a smaller burner)
I used a food thermometer to try to keep it at 180 degrees. I spent 6 hours checking it every 15-20 minutes and generally had to move the pot off the burner and/or turn the burner off for a few minutes to get it back down from 200 or I had to turn it up because it was below 180 (really a pain).
I'm wondering if I would be able to make chicken bone broth in a small slow cooker (I live alone so I don't usually need anything bigger) with 1 carcass, 2-3 chicken feet, and some fresh veggies?
As I have no plan to invest in an instapot, is there a way I could do this with the stockpot in the oven (I can set my convection oven to 150 degrees)?
Oh my goodness! You went through a lot!! Yes, you can make this in a slow cooker - I have a video where I show how to do it. And if your slow cooker is smaller than mine, just adjust the amounts. Just bring your stockpot up to a simmer on the stove top, and then place into your oven which you set to 180F. Let it stay in the oven for about 6 hours. Hope this helps. Keep me posted. Love, Mary

@@MarysNest Thought I would update you - 2nd try to make chicken bone broth - SUCCESS - in the oven this time - it's great and has beautiful gelatin - I used 3 carcasses and 6 feet - when it was done the 6 feet were still basically complete so I sealed them in a foodsaver bag and back into the freezer to use again the next time - the only thing that seemed odd was that since I don't have a fat separator I put the strained liquid into the fridge overnight so I could skim the fat - there was hardly any - it was so thin on top that I couldn't skim it without taking a lot of gelatin with it, so I basically just included it when I put the broth in jars - I was really looking forward to having shmaltz to see if I can still make my MaMaw's chicken and dumplings it requires chicken fat which I used to be able to get at the grocery
we made a fantastic batch of chicken bone broth all day yesterday, taking off of the heat and straining into a bowl at about 11:00pm. we were going to wait an hour before putting into refrigerator and forgot !! it is now 8:30 am and just refrigerated. is it still ok or should it be thrown out ?? thanks in advance.

oh so interesting your advice about NOT putting in Cauliflower or Broccoli as its too hard on your Thyroid - I've been adding Both Broccoli and cauliflower as my favorite add to my broths -- have i been inadvertently hurting my Thyroid? should i never put Broccoli and Cauliflower in my broths and soups?
