When was this back then you are referring to? In the 1980s, with Dan Issel and the Nuggets, as well as the "Showtime" Lakers, it was all run and gun. In the 1990s and early 2000s, it was iso and bully ball before Steve Nash and the Suns became cool.

@@jpabcede5016 That's disingenuous. Yes, back in the 80's they played a much higher tempo game because the players were so great they were able to push the ball a lot, which is a sign of good defense. But when teams played in the half court, they did play much different than they do today.
It seems you completely forgot about two of the most dominant teams of the 80's; The Celtics and The Pistons. The Celtics were great in the half court with Bird and McHale, and The Pistons were primarily a defensive team.
And yes, in the 90's you still had more fundamental type play with Hakeem, David Robinson, Jordan, Barkley, Stockton and Malone, Chris Million and Tim Hardaway, etc. Those guys still played the game the "right" way, and IMO it was far more enjoyable to watch than today's game.
Now, every single player on the court is either a slasher or a 3 point shooter, or some combination of the two. You don't see as much posting up, and when you do, it's not nearly as skilled. You don't see mid range jumpers until the playoffs when time is running out and you have to put the ball in the hand of your best player and let him create his own shot. In those scenarios, the mid range jumpers is the easiest shot to get off uncontested because you can drive to the basket forcing your man to commit, especially on an Iso. But it's a dying art anyway.
So yes, the game was faster paced in the 80's and even part of the 90's, but tat has to do with the players and the rules at that time. Zone defense and completely removing hand checking and removing forearm checking in front of the free throw line, as well as removing illegal defense has made it a jump shooter's league, with slashers coming in a close second. Why do you think Curry has had so much success? No way he'd be nearly the player he is today with the hand and forearm checking on the perimeter of the 80's and 90's.

Nash won MVP fair and square. I agree with this vid that there were a lot of good candidates though.
The case for Nash, he lost 3 of his starters from the year before, yet the suns were still able to get the 2nd seed and go to the conference finals.
The Suns that year were a team of a bunch of dudes who had been bouncing around the league or who were hardly playing the year before (obviously Shawn Marion is not included).
Many of these guys benefited greatly from playing with Nash, and many looked tremendously worse when they left him and the Suns.
Controversial MVP, but well deserved too.

Not just Kobe Bryant: Steve Nash's 2005-06 season was ALSO historic: leading the league in assists while joining the 50-40-90 club. (In a related story, I also remember some people questioning Nash's previous 2005 MVP award over Shaq, since Shaq turned new team Miami around while his old Lakers team missed playoffs with losing record under Kobe. But Nash also had huge impact for his new Suns team)
For 2005-2006, Kobe finished only 4th in the voting despite his amazing season, and I think it was not just because he shot only 45% (he was always a volume scorer) and the team went only 45-37, but because writers were still resentful or blamed Kobe for his part in Shaq's ouster from the Lakers. It was almost as if they were telling him, "Kobe, you didn't want to remain a sidekick to Shaq on a winning team, so you got him out to be the undisputed alpha dog, but now the Lakers aren't title contenders anymore, so suck on that 4th place finish, no MVP for you." Then the recent rape case and all which was fresh on their minds. Maybe he deserved to have been MVP or at least 2nd or 3rd, but I wasn't really surprised that he didn't win.
And LeBron and Dirk (and Dwyane Wade) were great in 2005-06, but seeing how the Suns again just jelled with Steve Nash at the helm, I didn't think Nash was a bad MVP choice at all for 2005-2006 MVP.
Now I'm old so my NBA memories go as far back to the mid to late 70s. IMHO, more questionable choices than Nash in 2006 have been Bob McAdoo over Rick Barry in 1975; maybe Julius Erving over Larry Bird in 1981 (it was close); Magic over MJ or Barkley in 1990; Karl Malone over MJ in 1997 and over Tim Duncan in 1999 (Mailman's real MVP season should have been 1998 when MJ won it); Duncan over Jason Kidd in 2002 (considering how Kidd turned Nets around in 1 year, much like Nash would do for Suns a few years later).
And basing my opinion not from memory but the history books, I would even include Bill Russell being 1961-62 MVP over Wilt with his 50 ppg season or Oscar Robertson with his triple double season while averaging over 30 ppg.
But all those MVP winners did have great seasons themselves, definitely. And so did Steve Nash.

@@j2398 the system wont work if nash wasnt there... Put kobe in nash place with that system, expect a trade before the trade because of his ego. Put Lebron in that same situation and he would not follow that system. He has his own system which is "give me the ball and wait on the outside in case i get tangled up i will pass you the ball you shoot a three". Both Kobe and Lebron pass balls when its the last resort. Steve nash passes the ball to get a better shot option. Midrange jumpers, aka kobe's favorite shot is the most ineffective shot selection. Too far to have good accuracy but to close to score an extra point aka 3pointers. Lebron just bulldozes his way inside and when tangled up in the middle of defenders, he pass to a big man that then shoots a three... He turned two offensive players to spot up shooters, basically making them less effective. Nash passes the ball when his shot is at about 70% chance of going in and he sees someone in the court that has a better look at the basket. He pass not because he is in a bad situation. Rather he passes to make a decent situation better. Keyword better.

Tryna break Steve Nash down to a statistics is doing such a disservice to his greatness. Idk how you think that Suns team had a bunch of talent when they had 1 other all star in Shawn Marion, that's not a stacked team. The fact everyone had career years that year says way more about Nash than it does those other players. If you wanna give the award to someone who carried a team to wins you give it to Dirk, if you wanna give it to best player then Kobe, all around package on both ends mixed with wins it's LeBron. Nash flat out shouldn't of won the mvp tho just off the fact that he had a bona-fide star with him and none of the candidates didn't, Dirk led his team to 60 wins with no all nba players or 20ppg scorers, LeBron took his team to 50 wins with no all nba players or 20ppg scorers

@@rickpeso7854 It's true but Marion couldn't carry the team by himself. Suns ranked higher than the Mavs because the Suns clinched their division title and the Mavs did not. If the Mavs did, Dirk would've been mvp for sure. Besides even if we debate here forever it still wouldn't change the result. Would be a nice stat though, assists but for defending? I jest but I'll just agree to disagree friend.

Lastly yes ofc we speak about points, the game is basketball and points is the most important thing and be wasn't even in top 20. The only reason it may not be the worst mvp choice ever is because it is the one previous year

If you watched Nash play that season you would understand. Nash would regularly draw 3-4 defenders off the perimeter and the kick the ball out. The thing is that if you look at what teammates like Stoudemire and Marion did before and after they were on the same team as Nash it shows how much value he added to the players around him. Marion and and Bell were great defenders but Nash made them look good on the offensive end when in reality they weren't that great.
Also, the suns may have only won 54 games that season which is indeed less than Dallas but they won the western division by a wide margin which is extremely impressive because the west have 4 teams make the playoffs that year. Additionally, that year Nash was their offense and their offense was the best in the league by a wide margin.
The most important point is that the MVP is decided by votes from different writers and commentators. Your video and commentary that is similar about the MVP doesn't take into consideration that a player isn't chosen for the award. They win an election essentially. Enough of the people paying attention and watching the game the most decided he was the player with the most value. get over it.

I love how he says that the Mavs would have had trouble winning 20 games without Dirk, but somehow doesn’t factor how terrible the Suns would be without Nash. I also have zero doubt that Larry Hughes would have had more success with the Suns being the 3rd, 4th, or 5th option, over being the #2 option under LeBron in Cleveland.
The Suns weren’t loaded with Marbury, because they sucked. Same core, switch out for Nash, and Nash suddenly gets a ‘loaded’ team? The key, was that he unlocked his teammates. His stats (%’s were superb though) won’t measure up, because his greatness was creating a moving and fun to watch offense; 5-on-5. LeBron is a great passer, but despite his gifts and lofty assist totals, he tends to lock up his teammates from playing to their strengths.
Nash works from a completely different perspective; I’ll the ball to you where you like it the most.

If i score 15 points by myself but i also make everyone else on my team score 2 extra points per game...well i really contribute 23points.
If i score 30 points by myself but i also make everyone else on my team score 2 times less per game...well i really contribute 22 points.
scoring more has diminishing returns and is therefore less valuable.

This video seriously lacks credit for assists. An assist, especially with the 3-point heavy Suns, is worth at least 2.5 points, and that's not counting how many times Nash put people on the line. Dirk averaged 8 more points than Nash, but also 8 less assists, which puts him way behind in combination. Then you factor Nash's shooting percentage, and his efficiency is just insane. Same with Kobe: 16 more points, but 6 less assists, way lower percentages, and a far lower winning percentage.

Eric snow is the raja bell of pg except he was actually a lock down defender. Eric Snow has been to 3 NBA finals and you acting like no one on cleveland could play.
Seriously is everyone here lost children? Nash took bench players in diaw, bell, thomas who are now starters to the 2nd seed and the WCF in the west. I love that you brought up the MVP points, did you see that Nash was 300 points better?
He lost 3 starters in johnson, que and amare and he lost his best bench player in steven hunter and he still made it to the WCF. Lets just talk results, lost 4 of his top 6 team mates in the off season. Beat Kobe after being down 3-1, Lebron plays in the east and lost in the semi and Dirk had been playing with alot of the same guys for years and they were ready to make a run.

I don't know who this Raja Bell even is, he's definitely not a household name. I could be wrong though, but this youtuber is presenting him like he's some great player. Stoudemire was an all star that should transfer half his points and earnings to Nash for feeding him the ball all game. I bet he wasn't even that great by himself. Raja Bell sounds like Sasha Vujacic kind of name. I don't know, maybe he had an all star talent, but he has a name of a scrub. The other players Nash played with? Come on man, without Nash on that team the Suns aren't even making the playoffs.

    • @turtleluvin9287

@@vitezjura exactly, raja was a role player who was a 3nD. He was a lesser version of a shane battier. I am struggling with some of these youtube people.
Like its becoming more and more clear to me that alot of these guys making videos on basketball are in there early 20's and really havent watched basketball and use stats to make arguments when they dont have a clue. I mean alot of the games are on youtube and you can go back and watch the 2006 playoffs and watch the lakers vs suns.
And without even knowing you are right, sasha and raja bell were the same type of player. Sasha a little better shooter and raja a little bit better defender.
