Reviewing the OLDEST INDIAN RESTAURANT in the UNITED KINGDOM - MICHELIN STAR!

- Опубліковано 19 бер 2024
- I'm back in London today to visit a very special restaurant known as Veeraswamy. Veeraswamy is famous for being the oldest Indian restaurant in the whole of the United Kingdom as it opened it's doors in 1926. It was also awarded a Michelin Star in 2016 and it's been recommended to me by a few of you.

Really glad you enjoyed and had a good experience, Gary. I've been to Veeraswamy twice now for big treat occasions. As you say, it is a step above anything else. The smell of fresh toasted spices and the general ambience are very special. What's most impressive is how they keep that quality in the evenings when every seat is taken - and yet the ambience is just as pleasant and relaxed! You certainly pay for what you get.
Spot on Alexander. What a lovely comment, pinned
Looked nicer than the one's in Knightsbridge, and that was 200 a head albeit with wine
@@GaryEats Point being is you get what you pay for and when the quality is above and beyond then how can you argue? Granted, it's treat territory as you say, it's expensive but if you want the absolute best then you pay for it in my opinion. So long as you can reasonably afford it though obviously. 👍
You'd be incorrect to think this Tony. I put any money made from the channel back into reviews because I enjoy doing it.

The Veeraswamy Indian Restaurant
OH MY
My parents🙏🙏🙏 got married in September 63. They spent their honeymoon in London. Travelled by train from Birmingham New St
It was just for a week (those days could not afford to go ‘abroad’)
On an evening out they dined at this famous Indian Restaurant
And my fathers maternal cousin and her husband 🙏🙏🙏got married in March 63
They also honeymooned in London and got there by motorbike a Triumph T100
They too spent a week in London and they also went to this famous Indian Restaurant
Amazing
👍 👍 👍 👍 ❤️❤️❤️🏴🏴😍😍
What an incredibly story Joanne. Thank you!
Hi Gary and Mr Cameraman,
Firstly i owe you an apology, as soon as the clip came on, i said 'at those prices no 10 /10 from me here.
I was so wrong, once the food came out i could tell instantly it was quality, the veg, the sauce thickness, the presentation, it was amazing.
I would 100% go here and pay the price for these amuse-bouches.
Chris.
It was special Chris I’ll be going back
Perfect marriage of British classiness and Indian vivaciousness. I went there 3 years ago for my birthday and thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of it. Certainly an expensive treat, but utterly faultless. 10/10.
This is an absolutely superb comment. I really loved the first part and I'm glad you had a great time!
Tom Kerridge dreaming of the quality this restaurant delivers
No comment lol
I bet he is, won’t achieve it.😂😂

Almost in tears there, Gary, never seen you so moved. Veeraswamy has always been the pinnacle of Indian food. Lucky man.
I think I must have said wow about a 100 times. It was superb, really appreciate your kind words John

The vegetarian meal looked wonderful. Serious food envy setting in here! I would save up for something as lovely as that .
@@GaryEatsthree people could share that!
Just stumbled on this channel today and I'm loving it. It's just proper, old school youtube like the glory days. No clickbaity stuff. Just a bloke who loves food going around with a camera, eating food and saying "Wow". Doesn't need any annoying extra frills. Just good charming, honest stuff. Shout out Gary, what a ledge.
That’s very kind Rob and appreciate you watching and commenting, have a great week 👍
What a lovely restaurant it’s nice when you actually get a beautiful experience and you then don’t question the price
I have to agree 💯with you Peter
Great review again Gary, and the cameraman deserves a special mention here, for capturing the beauty of the presentation. Yes it's expensive but this is obviously a special occasion restaurant and just looking at it the food, the presentation and your reactions to the tastes I felt it was worth every penny. I loved how, while a Michelin starred restaurant, it was still at heart a curry house (albeit a very expensive one) so none of the tiny portions or trying to be too clever for it's own good. It's clearly gained it's awards by focusing on those things that actually matter. A 10/10 for me, too.
I have to say, I agree with you. I watched the video during editing and thought he done an excellent job so thank you for pointing that out. It'll put a smile on his face and you're spot on regarding the meal!
I think people will focus on the fact that it's an Indian restaurant and will judge the price harshly because of that, not taking into account that it's Michelin starred. However, you did order two mains to try. Normally most people would only get one. Sounds like you could probably get a full meal for one with starters etc for >£70 which at a Michelin starred restaurant is actually really good. Plus, the food looked phenomenal.
You're right. In essence, I could have ordered less and left spending £50 but I feel it's only right to order both a veggie and a meat dish. Thanks for watching and completely agree with you
Yeah but that's only for one main with no starter or dessert. Gary didn't even have rice, only naan and £8 for a butter naan is ridiculous.
@@moorenicola6264 You would spend more at Miller and Carter TBH and that is not a patch on this
@@moorenicola6264I would bet my house it would be the best naan you’ve ever eaten. I totally agree it’s expensive but it is in essence the most up market naan you can purchase in London. £8 (whilst I can’t believe I’m saying this) is actually pretty reasonable. You pay £8 for a cheese sandwich here in London.

I completely agree. The dishes are simple but done so elegantly that I couldn't put into words how classy the product of their food is. It's quite special to achieve that, it's one thing to be able to produce something like that butbit's another thing to be able to maintain it year after year. Veeraswamy is a treasure and you put it on display for us perfectly. Great vid.
Spot on. Fantastic way of putting it
I watched the whole review before i commented, so i wouldn't miss anything you had to say! To dine at a Indian Michelin restaurant is on my bucket list to do. I asked a while ago if you could go and experience one for us ( you said yes! ) and thankfully you delivered. I'm so pleased you enjoyed it I enjoyed you experiencing this meal from my arm chair, licking my lips here.
Thanks Gary.
I had a great time Steve and thank you for the suggestion 👌
I've been there a few times over the years, fist time was as an 18th birthday treat from my late Dad who was Anglo Indian (he.went there first in 1952 when he first came to the UK)
Then a lovely ex partner takes me for lunch there when he's in the UK for work....so about every 2/3 years is my treat.
Totally agree about the cost, it is expensive but you're getting top quality food & service in an amazing setting.
Worth doing if only once for a treat or special occasion.
Thanks for doing this one love, brought back many happy memories!
I think you've nailed it Tracy. A once every year or so treat is how I would deem it. So many superb restaurants around the country that also deserve a try. Thanks for the lovely comment
I'm not good with spice Korna and Rogan josh or about my level. I may go there when Im next in London
@GaryEats Eyup Gaz..Me and the missus coming to London 28th June for 3 days for her 50th (29th) Indian her fav food so might give this a go... Unbelievably expensive tbf no matter how good (£28 for 1 curry 😮😮) so I'll need to think about it..We've already booked Blacklock's in covent garden for Sunday lunch..We booked it after watching your review when you said there was a 3 month waiting list but we managed to get in ok.👍👍.. I'll buy you a pint if we see you ..😂😂..cheers Guy..
@@GaryEatshey Gary, yes it’s ok but not mind blowing at all, £8 for a fkng naan bread, they should be locked up for that robbery, that surely has to be the most expensive naan bread in the uk !
Yes your Michelin started, but a naan bread is naan bread, they use the same flour, and butter ! Insanity

I was expecting Noel Coward to pop up on the Piano it was that much 1940s Ambience going on , great restaurant number1
Lol brilliant Christine
@@GaryEats cheers 🥂 Gary I only know who Noel was from the TV show Goodnight Sweetheart you know where the guy coincidentally called Gary too goes back in time to the 40s it was a cool show
I know it's expensive. It's a michelin stared restaurant in London. You know before you go. BUT for a special occasion or treat, this is something you will not get elsewhere. Forget indian think, michelin restaurant. This did not disappoint. It hit the mark. Quality, service, surroundings, and location. It's an event with first class food. Just looking you could tell that was special food. (Great portion sizes too)
Spot on Steven. Fantastic comment
@GaryEats also you had two mains and a naan. If you added a portionof rice, that would have fed two. Not so expensive then 😊
The level of content on this channel is brilliant
Thank you
The colours of the dishes and presentation looked top notch Gary and as a treat you get what you pay for so big thumbs up from me.
Unbelievable all round. Glad you liked the video!
Hi Gary. Great review. I have eaten here a few times back in the 90s when I was working at Green Park. I recall being blown away by how beautiful it is and feels very luxurious and special. The food excellent too. I think there was a buffet available back then. Regarding the price - it was back in the 90s which meant lunch was on expenses!
That’s the way to go, put it on the company account or find a rich friend lol
I'm having Indian tonight because of this !! Very nice interior to the restaurant. Such a coward not having the duck Vindaloo lol. 😁
The presentation was just immaculate. That's a nice big naan bread.
Vegetable Korma looked lovely. Curried asparagus is a decadent delight ! Chicken Makhani looked lovely.
It's a great place for a special meal with a loved one as it's very pricey but worth it as a special treat. Thanks for showing us this place Gary. It's a 9.5 for me as it has a service charge but that's a great review.
Please send me the invoice Andrew! No problem and thanks for your fantastic comment
It's a fantastic restaurant, Gary! Only been there a handful of times, usually work related, but with the wife a couple of times. Always fabulous service, fantastic food, fabulous presentations and the ambience is amazing. It will always be a 10 out 10 in my database. But it's of course on the expensive side, but worth a visit on a special occasion, without a shadow of a doubt. The roast duck vindaloo is just to die for and so is their roasted coconut chicken curry!! You really made me hungry now, mate! 😃 Another fantastic review in tbe bag, Gary, keeping up the fabulous work! Have yourself an absolutely wonderful rest of your day and speak to you soon. Keep an eye out for an email towards the weekend. 😊
Top man Frank. Glad you like it at Veeraswamy, sometimes it's worth having a treat. Thanks again and I will do mate!
Wonderful Stuff, as always! Thank You!
I went to Veeraswamy, back, in the mid 2010s…I described it thus :
“Ethereal”.
It was just so good.
This is really really good to hear. Glad you enjoyed it!
Hahaha love it Gary, give my best to the wife and kids. I was with Donna at the Bengal Lancer on Friday and I said 'Let's give it a go' before we went in and Donna haha you know how she is (Jimmy Choos from Bicester Village) looked round the car park for people who heard haha all the best
Hahah brilliant stuff mate. Take care and all the best to you and your family
The food looked fantastic. Definitely on the list of places to go for a special occasion. Great review
Thanks Steve. Top man
That was my mum and dad's favorite restaurant. I never went as I'm a wimp with spices. Not too many restaurants have stood the test of time

Wow, what a wonderful restaurant, Gary! And the food looked outstanding. I wish I’d been there with you!
Thanks for yet another excellent video!
Glad you enjoyed it!!
I really liked the way you chose the dishes, little on the carbs, as the light naan would not have made you feel bloated after it. Will give it a try. Thanks. Looked like a 10/10
Thank you so much 😊 that's why I did it. Thought the rice would have been too much and I wanted to show you all the dishes they have on hand :)

Cheers Gary, great review. It's now on my list to visit one day!
I hope you enjoy when you visit
Great video Gary. The food and restaurant looked amazing.
Thank you Liz this was amazing
Incredible video yet again Gary, I think you missed out though you should’ve had the rice if it’s that good restaurant they would’ve had aged basmati rice. I worked today Ops manager in rice factory and when you got aged Basmati rice it was out of this world and I think they would’ve been using that so if you ever go back again make sure you have a rice dish.
Vindaloo shouldn’t be overly hot. It’s about the vinegar that they used to cook it with so if they know what they’re doing, it’s not gonna blow your head off otherwise they wouldn’t put it with duck. Your channel gets better and better by the day mate, Look forward to all your videos keep them coming
Don't say that Steve, I'll live with regret and want to go back tomorrow lol. Top man and thank you!

Thank you Shaun that place for a treat
Wow, another great video Gary thank you. It certainly did look amazing in every way including the price but you get what you pay for here I don’t mind that I was just hoping wishing that yard ordered some rice with it as it looked quite rich and creamy without any riceand I would’ve been interested to see what rice dishes they do it’s hard for me to have a curry without rice!

Evening chaps, what a stunning looking interior. Days of the Raj comes to mind😊 definitely a cut above my local curry house. Gary, actors learn their lines and tell a story. But your expression, your comments. The sheer joy you showed with every aspect of that meal, well that's sold it to me 😊and as you know i'm not a spicey curry type of guy. Price, cost is always going to be a major factor 😢. A family treat, for say 4 people £300-£350. Oh but the quality of that restaurant and the memories that you leave with i would say almost priceless 😊❤Allan&Family
Allan, I’m disappointed in you, I said way to many wows and you let me off, thank you 🙏. This actually blew me away the restaurant service and food …. Only one word. BRILLIANT lol thank you as always and regards to the family and all have a WOW week lol 😂👍👍

A £75 tasting menu in a Michelin starred restaurant in Central London must be the bargain of the century.
I thought that was excellent value as well Johnathan
Fantastic video Gary. This looks a really top quality Indian restaurant. I am definitely going to try and go to this place sometime I am in London. Honestly never been to it before or seen it. The quality of the food looked fantastic. Loved the look of the vegetable Korma. Chicken dish looked lovely. None of it looked oily at all. Expensive but I don't mind paying for quality food. Glad to hear the service and setting were excellent too. You're not going to going to be to these places every week. Nice work. Good to see you doing some slightly more high end places now and again. Nice work.
Very kind John this is well worth a visit 👍
Fantastic video Gary, love the fact you try all types of places both cheap & expensive.. keep em coming 👍🏻
Really appreciated we do try to do all different price brackets 👍
Thanks Gary, one for the notebook, you can't beat perfect!
I totally agree!
Great review. I went here a few years ago before the Michelin star and had a very average meal. I do know the other two restaurants in the chain and had much better meal at one of them, Chutney Mary in Fulham. I suspect Veeraswamy is now under new management and they have considerably raised their game. Will have to make a return visit I think.
Thanks Steve. I'm sorry you didn't enjoy it before but maybe time to go back and give it a go. I'll be doing Chutney Mary for a comparison video in the future - all the best!
I love the way you enjoying making n explaning stuff through your videos gary love them
That’s very kind thank you
love the indian restaurants reviews, might have to put this one on my bucket list!
It’s definitely worth a visit 💯
Loved the flock wallpaper
Very nice in there
Love the reaction. I’ve eaten at a few Michelin restaurants and tell everyone that you’ve not tasted food until you eat Michelin. It’s amazing. Food that makes you smile and literally say wow. I love it. You need to try Opheem in Birmingham. 10 course tasting menu. It’s Indian but nothing like you’ve had before, not a Bhaji or Naan in sight. They e just got a second star. Amazing
I'll see what I can do. Might be another one to try in the future - thank you
Excellent video as always!! Both dishes looked incredible!! Hope all is well, take care
Very kind Peter you take care as well mate
Another top video, Gary. Great chap.
Very kind thank you
Mr Gary, went there in 1989, it knock the socks off on our local Restaurants in SW14 and surrounding areas, even better when the Client paid.
Great to hear Stephen. It's a wonderful place
Food looked lovely. That naan had my mouth watering :) If you go back again sometime it'd be nice to see what creative ways they've come up to elevate rice,I'm sure they have. Expensive yes but true quality is and you'd only go somewhere like that as a REAL treat and probably as a special occasion(unless you're doing it for your UA-cam channel). I wish your wallet a speedy recovery 😆
My wallet is still in hiding and doesn't want to come out Rob lol. You're spot on regarding it being a treat!
I have been watching you for a while. Enjoying your work. I have eaten in this restaurant many years ago but loved your enthusiasm when the dishes were served to the table.
Thank you for watching and commenting Christopher much appreciated
Oh my. That meal looked delicious, Gary. The serving dishes really were a nice touch, too. Going off this review it makes me want to visit the restaurant!
Pauline I’ll be going back as I really loved the whole experience
Presentation wow, love the fact you have burners to keep it hot. That Naan looked perfect.
You know your somewhere upmarket when you have a bit of Silver leaf on a veg korma.
I'm guessing your in at lunchtime Gary did you have to pre-book and if so how far infront.
Only thing missing there is a nice cold pont of Kingfisher.
I would have definitely gone for the tasting menu as the price is almost the same.
Just on looks it a 10 if you don't take vfm into account Gary.
I'm off to Google the place
Spot on Rob. I really had a hard time marking this one as I wanted to take price into but when something exceeds your expectations in all areas, it has to be a 10.
@@GaryEats did you pre-book far in advance?
I did not. Day before.
Glad you got to really enjoy yourself there, Gary. Shame that the bill ended up being a lot more searingly spicy than the food, but I suppose for that kind of food, service and ambience, it's worth it for an occasional treat. That Michelin star didn't come out of nowhere.
You're spot on
Looked absolutely amazing Gary, I was drooling, excellent content as usual my friend.
Expensive but what an experience.👍👍👍👍
Thanks Kev 👍
This is going on my bucket list. Thanks Gary.
It’s with a visit Ken for sure
Another idea for a T-Shirt would be "It's put a smile on my face".
Not more t shirt ideas 🤣
Wow Gary that looked excellent!
It was breathtaking!
Wow, that food looks absolutely delicious 😋. Thanks Gary.
It was! You’re more than welcome
Wow !!!, 10 points for each time Gary says Wow in this video. Haha, great as always Gary. Very smart, loving the shirt 👍. What a great meal. I love all the little details they've added, the bowls, the candles underneath the bowls to keep the food warm. The serving spoons, and the colours of the food, wow. Excellent Gary, before the price, definitely a 10/10 after the price, lol well I'm not sure haha. Would you say out of all the places you've been too on this channel so far, is this one you're favorite? A great video Gary, still love watching you're channel. You really are a great guy. 👍
That would make it 760/10 Charlie, my apologies as it’s strange not normally a word I use. That’s a really great comment and only one word I can use. WOW 😂
Congratulations, Gary, you are now the most famous person that has eaten there.
Lol you're too kind Patrick
£70.15p! You could have fed all of George Galloways election team curry, in Bradford, for that😅
Lol Colin. I'll be up in Bradford very very soon for a big comparison video
Get to Akbars in Bradford Gary. Lamb chop starter.......
@@GaryEatsyou don’t want to go there Gary
@GaryEats: Awesome you are coming up to Bradford. I'm from nearby Shipley. Where are you going, mate? Xxx.
Good value compared to the Gordon Ramsay one that looked like an Uncle Ben can. This is on a different planet.
Great review. I'm tempted to try this one.
It’s definitely worth a visit Dominic
Fantastic video Gary! You have a brilliant, authentic mannerism with your videos that resonates with us folk who love to just give it a go! Best wishes matey

Thank you kindly 👍🏼🤣
Yet another great review thanks Gary will certainly give it a go when back in the UK from Australia in May.
As you requested when next in Windsor could you visit one of the following restaurants as it would be good to know The Greene Oak, Crown & Cushion, The Duchess of Cambridge, Two Brewers or Gilbey’s Bar in Eaton, looking forward to seeing your top review thank you.
Thank you, Yes I can do. Thank you!
Wow ! Perfect score way to go it's a pleasure seeing you enjoying that !
This was an absolute joy 🤩
It’s so heartwarming when you have a meal you really really enjoy and that looked excellent!
I fully agree 👍
Worth every penny I'd say! All things considered: Michelin star restaurant in Regent Street serving peerless food in beautifully tasteful surroundings and with suitably pleasant ambience... I mean, that is, truly, a luxury dining experience! A luxury like this will never come cheap, but it comes with guaranteed great memories. Glad you loved it!
This is definitely one for that special occasion
Such a professional and terrific review thanks so much Gary glad you enjoyed it 💙💎🙏
That’s so kind Louise have a great week 😊👌x
@@GaryEats Pleasure Gary excited to see your next review 💎🙏 have a great week too!
Great review again Gary, hats off to the cameraman too, some great shots. I hope he got to try some!
I agree he done brilliantly on this one but alas nothing spare on this one, a packet of crisps on this occasion lol
well jell…
absolutely 10/10…
looked fab…
savour the flavour…
just really appreciate your fantastic reviews.
keep uploading
I will do my best Alan. Thank you!
Gary, that looked sensational. I’m very jealous!!! Will definitely be paying that one a visit soon. Another cracking review sir. 👍🏻👏🏻
Great word sensational better than my wow 😳thank you
Beautiful setting! Food looked lovely and by the sounds of it, tasted even better. Naan looked fantastic. I would have had to have a rice dish with it but that’s just personal preference (and would have deemed a doggy bag as my eyes are always bigger than my belly). I made a butter chicken for Hubby Joe yesterday for dinner tonight - spooky, lol. Another great review, Gary. Definitely a 10/10 from me. On the down side - didn’t think much of the choices for the business lunch! Keep up with your fantastic reviews!
Not a problem Fiona, just didn't want to waste any food!
Excellent channel Gary!
Thank you kindly my friend
Great reviewing for a special restaurant, well done Gary.
That’s very kind thank you
Love your work. Your reviews make me smile - even the bad ones.
Glad you like them Tony - top man!
Love the content Gary (and camera man). I would definitely give it a go. My hubby and I LOVE a curry!
It looked like the veg korma had foil or something in the shots?
Either way keep them coming!
It was for decoration and thanks so much
Another cracking video. Thank you sir.
Very kind 👍
