- I'm in Central London today and it's been a while since I've been to a café so I headed down to the Little Portland Cafe, right next to Oxford Street to try some of their specials. I've been here before when reviewing a breakfast comparison to the Wolseley and thought I'd give it a go again!

Hi Gary, been a fan for a while now and appreciate your work so much I have taken the time to pen you a quick limerick. Hope you like it:
There once was a UA-camr named Gary,
Whose food reviews were quite legendary,
With a charming demeanor,
And a gilet much cleaner,
He was the friendliest culinary fairy.
His channel just hit fifty-four K,
"A great milestone!" his fans would say,
With a smile and a wink,
And a "Let's give it a go!" in sync,
He ventured to eateries, come what may.
His cameraman, shrouded in myth,
Never snacking on a single dish,
An enigma, staying out of frame,
In the food review game,
He's the whisper, the folklore, the wish.
Gary's off to Ireland, land of the green,
Where the spuds are plenty, and the meats are lean,
His viewers decided, with a joyful cheer,
To watch him review an Irish beer,
And the tastiest colcannon ever seen.
In his navy blue gilet, he'd embark,
Unless the weather was too warm - hark!
He'd jest about Kerridge's fish and chips,
"No thanks, I'll not empty my wallet for a few dips,
And a fish that's no bigger than a lark!"
With each comment left, he'd take the time,
To respond with care, as if each a rhyme,
His kindness shone through each video screen,
In the vast digital realm, he was the cuisine queen,
A UA-camr so friendly, it should be a crime.
So here's to Gary, with subscribers in tow,
A champion of food, a true gastronomic pro,
His humor and warmth make the internet glow,
As always, dear Gary, let's give it a go!

I'm a big believer in the specials in a Cafe, particularly lunchtime specials. A cafe I used near Charlton , 30 years ago did lamb chops Yorkshire pudding and mash for £2 on a Thursday from 1 pm. The place was mobbed!!!!
That chill looked very nice. A real home style classic!! I cook it at home just like that. Not fancy but good.
That salt beef and mash looked absolutely incredible. My kind of food. Peas are peas !! 😂

This is a little gem in Central London. Proper old time cafe food and I'm glad you visited again. At those prices it's quite hard to criticise. The food would have to be pretty awful. And it's far from that. Both dishes looked absolutely fine. Much as I like a chili con carne, I make and eat that myself quite often, but I don't always have the chance to eat salt beef, so I'd be very happy to try some of that. And if it's crowded, that speaks for itself. Factoring in the low cost and your description of the taste plus my own view of the food, it's a definite 9 from me!

Can't beat this really. Two tasty dishes abundant quantity, nicely served, a good cup of tea and all for under 20 quid. Not forgetting it's all set in London Central.

Great review Gary. I was absolutely amazed at the quality of all the food, portion sizes outstanding and the prices, especially central London. WOW!!! 2 places I'd recommend when you come to Ireland if you need recommendations are Independent Pizza in Drumcondra and Gravediggers pub in Phibsborough, get the Coddle in Gravediggers, traditional Dublin dish (and a Guinness of course)

I stayed in Drumcondra 20 years ago, very nice area. If I ever revisit I'll try a pizza!
Lovely Jubbly, the food looked warming, nothing says London grub better than salt beef and chilli-con -carne, lol! Those platefuls for that price in the middle of London, astonishing! Local cafes down here charge over a tenner for half that quantity! Loved the mash, you could see the butter hadn't been spared, before you mentioned it! Very envious of places like that, just to far away! Another informative video Gary, keep 'em coming!

Many years ago I worked at the BBC and I would have excellent fried eggs, chips, buttered bread and a cup of tea at the Little Portland Caff on a regular basis. Thanks for bringing back the memories.

Hi Gary, For £18.50 in central London that was brill. Don't forget that 20% of that £18.50 was VAT, so they have managed to provide 2 good quality "honest" meals to you for £14.80 (ex VAT), in the center of London. I really don't know how they manage to do it with the cost of food, wages, power, business taxes, etc, etc these days. Thanks for another great review. All the best.

If it's a long time business and family run, I wonder if they own the premises, thus fending off arbitrary rent increases which are the bane of independent bricks and mortar businesses up and down the land ( especially in London)?
I bet they have regular and loyal clientele.
Unbelievable price for home cooked food in that area….. a takeaway burger meal or a panini and coffee in nearby Oxford Street will cost more than that…. great vid…. thanks 🙏

Salt Beef... we call it Corned Beef here in Aus. I always thought the name come from the UK. And... wow, I remember subscribing where you were under 1000 subscribers! Awesome Gary! You are the most 'down to earth reviewers' on the tube
Corned beef is the Irish name I think for salt beef, I think. Not to be confused with Fray Bentos corned beef which is a different kind of beast.

Corned beef got its name from the large grained rock salt, also called corns of salt, used to preserve the beef.
Corned beef to me is that horrible stuff in a can.
Or similar stuff they sell in slices.

I learned some new things today from your video. I had to look up what salt beef is. We call it corned beef in America and mostly eat it on St. Patrick's Day as corned beef and cabbage--with carrots and potatoes--(if we even eat it then). Also, only some parts of the country eat chili on rice, so I was surprised to see the rice and had to look up the usage of it as a bed for chili. Some of us eat Texas style chili (without beans) only shredded cheese and sour cream as a topping. I could see the salt beef was corned beef once your plate was cleared.

Hi Gary ! Yes, that's a good, popular cafe. I wish we had a salt-beef culture here in Sydney. When I was in London in 2017, I'd be at the famous Beigel shop in Brick Lane on a weekly basis scoffing down their bagel with salt beef and pickles in the little park a few doors away. One day, right in front of the park bench I was sitting on, what looked like a blackbird went after this robin in the hedge only 5 feet away from me. I couldn't believe it. It was actually hunting the robin inside the hedge. I'm thinking, since when did blackbirds or whatever go after robins ? Anyway. As times get tougher, for me in particular, simple value-for-money food becomes a necessity. Thanks for the video, my friend !

Hi Gary, both dishes looked really good!! Especially the Chilli, it looked perfect, I love salt beef with a nice mash as well, when it's properly cooked. From your description, it sounds right up my alley, so when recovered, I will be on my way to the Portland Cafe again and eat something else but a breakfast. Glad you went back and gave them a second chance, mate! I will have to pay them another visit, when I am working as attending in Harley Street and try their specials. Another great review Gary.Your doing fantastic on here, i love all of them. Central London and only 8.50 is truly amazing! Nice to see they are not cashing in on the prime location. Both meals looked brilliant value for money,and also really appetising.I think covering real value for money establishments is really helpful in this cost of living crisis, although we also love the more expensive venues too.

Great, no nonsense food at a brilliant price. Really loved the look of that salt beef dinner, which I don’t think I’ve ever eaten ! We used to go to The Stockpot just off Leicester Square who did the same sort of food, I believe it started in the 1950’s and was frequented by out of work actors. Sadly, it’s no longer there. Great review as always

I really like Gary's reviews. Quintesentially british honest and fair reviews.
Why I like him is he reviews all different foods up and down the country.
Also he doesn't seem like the type to be bribed for good reviews.
I would like to see Gary reviewing all different types of things. Holidays, cars who knows the world is his oyster.
One thing I do know is Gary knows his stuff when it comes to food. I have been a fan for a long time.
It's only after seeing so many poor food reviews on youtube that I realise how good Gary is.

I love watching these shows. I’m a kiwi and haven’t travelled for a while but in the early 90s lived in London for a few years. NZ at the time had a healthy cafe culture and foodie scene. Britain did not. I preferred the continent of Europe instead. At the time the only al fresco dining was beer gardens.
I have been thrilled watching the UK get onto the food wagon and see that it is now very different from my experience. I am hoping to visit Europe including the UK in the coming year and find your posts very inspirational. Keep up the good work.

Firstly i can't believe the price of these meals for central London.
Chilli con carne was ok, but the salt beef one of my favourites, just such a shame they did not get the gravy quite right, but certainly a well deserved 9/10.
Now then Mr Cameraman, we finally got a glimpse of you at 3:17 including the ducking down as he realised.
You where a baseball hat that's clear, to which im guessing your male between 25-35 maybe Gary's son if he has one, also he lets you eat off his plate, we will get to see you Mr Shy.

Is Salt Beef what we call Silverside, or Corned Beef (different cuts) in New Zealand? We don't usually have gravy with it, Mustard sauce is common.

I absolutely love salt beef so it looked like at least a 9 before you even tried it. Have to agree the gravy did look a tad wishy washy but might have as you said overpowered if it was thicker and more robust. Having said that, change that for a nice parsley sauce and I'd give it the full monty 10. Great review as usual, they must be cooking 24/7 to produce that range of home cooking. And price for where it is? Astonishing giving the fact that a lot of places using every excuse in the book these days for exorbitant price hikes. 👏👏👍👍

Ate here all the time when I was a student at the University of Westminster across the road. Great food, great service, GREAT prices and friendly people. Came back two years after graduating and the owner recognised me immediately and they treated me like family. Love this place.

I just checked their opening hours! They open pretty early about 6am and close at 3pm or 2pm on Saturdays, closed on Sundays

Instead of saying a really cheap breakfast or meal..
Try inexpensive instead of cheap.
Cheap could be taken as a negative, i.e cheap and nasty by some people.
Or even great value is better than cheap.
I lived in London for 20 years, moved down from Yorkshire for work. Now I live in Melbourne, Australia. One of my favourite pizza places in London during the time I lived there was La Porchetta in Muswell Hill..

When I was working in London as a chauffeur and at the Langham hotel, I used to pop into the Portland Café regular for breakfast and bacon rolls always been good never let me down and all the years that I went there.
