  • We start our day in Basel marshalling yard, pick up our locomotive, shunt across the yard to our wagons and get them ready to roll. You will see some other trains and quite a distance has to be covered to get to the train. The route today takes us from Basel on the famous Bözberg-Route to Baden, where we head into the Furttal region before reaching Glattbrugg and Rümlang. This is the destination for our load of Jet A-1 fuel, which will then be used at Zurich Airport to make the metal birds fly. There is a lot of shunting movement in the beginning and at the end of the video - you will see the complete manoeuvre into the oil depot and shunting the locomotive out of the oil depot again.

      Too vast distances to electrify all lines in Australia, just like the US and Canada. Besides you cannot have double deckers. You will maybe opt for hydrogen locomotives in the future.

    • @catrachocolo

      Too vast distances is a poor excuse. It didn't stop the Soviets from electrifying. Or the Chinese. Or the Indians. Australia, the US and Canada are unwilling/incapable, that's all. And of course you can operate double stack trains under wire: ua-cam.com/video/lWelXkX9dY0/v-deo.html

    I just can't get over how clean the engine room/equipment room is on these electric locomotives, which you could probably walk through in your best suit without it getting dirty... walking through the engine room on a British Railways diesel electric locomotive would require you to wear a boiler suit, and it would be a real shock to you to see just how grimy they are, especially the class 47's, which had a nasty habit of catching fire due to the amount of oil (and god knows what else) sloshing around in the engine sump plate drain... I remember failing with a BR class 50 due to a major oil leak, which made the inside of the engine room look like a disaster in an oil refinery! Happily retired now after 40 years of driving trains... you make great videos...

  • @zoqaeski

    I always find goods train videos far more interesting than passenger workings. There's so much more that goes on, and it's fascinating watching the shunting from the driver's perspective. Are older locomotives like the Re620 different to drive compared to newer rollingstock? It's one of locomotives featured in an old book about modern locomotives that I had when I was younger which I must have read hundreds, if not thousands of times. I wish there was more English-language literature on Swiss locomotives.
    There's another person on UA-cam who has filmed driving along this route several times; they go by the name of lorirocks777. Between the two of you I've seen several hundred kilometres of the Swiss railway network, it's great. Thanks for going to the effort to film your journeys :)

    • @RailwayEmotions
      @RailwayEmotions  5 років тому +5

      Of course there's a huge difference between older and newer rolling stock. It's like comparing an oldtimer to a brand new car with fancy things and comfort. The 620 has almost no helpers at all, no "cruise control", everything is hand made. That's also the case with newer machines, but they help with certain things, like the cruise control, comfortable seats, they measure the length of the train when passing switches etc.

    • @zoqaeski
      @zoqaeski 5 років тому +1

      @@RailwayEmotions Does the more manual method of control make driving more challenging? The Re 620 would have to be well over 40 years old by now. How do they compare with the Re 4/4 II, which are around the same age? How many classes of locomotive and multiple-unit are you qualified to drive, and do you have a favourite? Growing up in a country that only has electric suburban rail services, and no main line electrification (anymore), I find electric locomotives fascinating quite possibly because I've never seen one in real life.

    • @RailwayEmotions
      @RailwayEmotions  5 років тому +2

      It is definitely more challenging for new drivers, but with experience and feel for the machine, it gets easier. The slightest changes in inclination already require inputs from us, in order to keep the train on the desired speed and make sure it does never go over the limit. 620 and 420 (4/4") are both pretty much the same to drive, the differences are found in their internals and of course in the power they produce. Those two are among my favorites for multiple reasons, but I also like other machines.

    Hello there. I really enjoyed the shunting of the train in the beginning. I didn't even know that the freight train got it's fuel in an oil depot just adjacent to the Zurich Airport. What qualifications does one need in order to drive a train (freight ) . Look forward to your next video.

    • @RailwayEmotions
      @RailwayEmotions  5 років тому +2

      Qualifications vary from country to country, sometimes also from company to company. Mental and physical health are very important, aswell as a certain level of intelligence (nothing absurd) and logical thinking. Freight and passenger are both equal in terms of qualification.

    Another GREAT video. Thank you.
    Several questions.
    1 what are qualifications for an engineer (train driver)?
    2 is there a switch control tower (or room somewhere)? In the switching yards?
    Are the switches set locally by the stations or is there a master control somewhere?
    Any chance we could get a look at one?
    3 are there control zones for the overhead power lines? Where are these controlled from?
    4 please explain the beeping sound?
    Thank you in advance. What a way to tour a country.

Followed the journey on Google Maps (on a second screen to get the bigger picture LOL). A question : The shunting signals - two white horizontal lights = STOP but what is the difference please between the vertical lights and diagonal lights?
    Thanks!

    • @RailwayEmotions

      Both allow for shunting, but diagonal lights show that the next section could be occupied (immediately after) or that the next dwarf signal shows stop.

  • @bats2rrailroads
    @bats2rrailroads 4 роки тому

    Great video! Really enjoyed the switching on each end of the line. And hearing the radio communications with the ground crew. Thanks for showing us that there is more than just taking a train from one town to another. I hope to see more switching in the future. Here in the US there has to be a buffer car between the locomotive and tank cars hauling flammable liquids or corrosive liquids in case of derailment. Usually an empty box car or covered hopper.
    Are there any special precautions taken for trains like this? I'm sure you watch signals like a hawk with what's behind you!
    When you park your locomotive at the end of the run like today does a company van pick you up?
    And I got to pass through Baden! Keep up the outstanding work. I hope you enjoy your job because we all are! Thanks!

    • @RailwayEmotions
      @RailwayEmotions  4 роки тому +1

      There are different measures in place, which I obviously won't talk about. However there is no empty wagon between the locomotive and the rest of the train. There are no company vans, so after parking, the way back has to be walked.

    I'm surprised the Swiss allow such a cargo to share the same tracks as passenger trains. At the very least I would have thought a train like this would be restricted to the middle of the night when nobody was around.

    • @RailwayEmotions
      @RailwayEmotions  5 років тому +3

      All our tracks are used by high-speed, freight and local trains at the same time, there are no separate tracks for certain types of trains. What difference would it make to let such a train run in the night? If something were to happen with dangerous goods, it would have the same effect during day or night.

  • @officialmcdeath
    @officialmcdeath 5 років тому +1

    Subscribed with bell! Thanks for including as much as you could of the shunting at each end.
    Several questions :
    1) where did the load originate? A local tank farm in the Basel area or somewhere further North?
    2) you seem to make good use of rheostatic/regenerative braking - down to what speed does that work?
    3) when you change ends at Rümlang, it is clear that the fans are busy cooling the power systems after the journey - would you normally leave the pantograph up when you park, to let the fans finish the job, or can the onboard batteries cover that need without connection to the overhead wire?
    Thanks again - keep doing it!

    • @RailwayEmotions
      @RailwayEmotions  5 років тому +3

      Not sure where the load exactly came from, somewhere in Germany. Those machines were among the first to have regenerative braking, it works well, but newer machines have much more electric braking power and therefore feed even more energy back into the grid. It works down to about 40 - 20km/h, which is the latest point to turn it off, else the train will go backwards. ;) The cooling fans only work with overhead power. But the machine wasn't hot anyway, the last part of the journey was quite relaxing for the components and the shunting doesn't stress it much. Even if it were hot, letting the fans run for a few minutes usually is enough. So it stayed there and cooled down by itself. You'd also turn off your car at service temperature and won't bother much with the heat it still has at that point.

    • @officialmcdeath
      @officialmcdeath 5 років тому +1

      @@RailwayEmotions thanks for that most instructive reply - it rather suggests that there's a timer that keeps the fans going for a little while after they're strictly necessary, maybe as a precaution.
      Your love for the art of rail operation shines through in your words, please keep posting!

    Seeing that the Zurich Airport oil depot sidings have gates and connection switches at both ends of its tracks, why was it decided to run in backwards instead of directly trough the other gates?

    • @RailwayEmotions
      @RailwayEmotions  5 років тому +9

      It is forbidden to enter the depot with electric locomotives. Think of the dangers of flammable liquids and electric sparks... An arriving train has to be parked on the side and then shunted in with diesel machines, or pushed backwards by an electric loco like we did here.

    Very interesting. Query. In the yard at the beginning (Basel)and in previous video the locomotives seem to be parked by company, that is the SNCF park at the north west end of the yard, BLS at the south east end, DB all park together at about the middle of the yard and the SBB park near the 'hump' yard and maintenance 'shed'. Is this by design (that is where the company facilities are) or has it evolved that way?
    When a loco is parked, is it the duty of the driver to inform the yard master department of its location and condition (brakes, sand, lights, other) for attention by their company?
    Do the 620 and 420 classes now have the latest in traction control, allowing controlled wheel slip for maximum traction?
    Does this train have a schedule timetable for its run, all stops made seem to be due to 'late starting' passenger trains, (or fast running of the tanker train)?

    • @RailwayEmotions
      @RailwayEmotions  5 років тому +3

      Each company rents a certain length of tracks to park their locos, they are usually located close to their offices or wherever they start their duty. It is our duty to report any damages or malfunctions so they can be fixed. 620 and 420 are well over 50 years old and will never receive any modern traction control, they are still the same to drive as ever. Macro wheel slip is only found on modern machines. EVERY single train has a timetable, but it can be shifted around if an international freight train is too late. Stops in front of red signals are either planned or happen because of other trains in the path, someone being too late or similar.

    Sir - Once your locomotive joins to the cars/wagons, is there someone on the ground who ensures that the coupling is secured and connects the air hoses? I never see anyone doing this. Also, when you deliver the wagons, is there likewise another person at the terminal who disconnects everything from your engine? Also, do your locomotives have WC's in them???

    • @RailwayEmotions
      @RailwayEmotions  4 роки тому

      Either we do it ourselves or in bigger stations or sidings there's personnel for that. No, there are no toilets on our locomotives.

      It was earlier decades ago. Today the railway company sell them all or rent them out. I think today there are all gone. And you are right, in 30is, 40is and so on these was the houses for families and the man was hired from the SBB/BLS to maintain barrier systems or track changes. Long long time ago...
