    Unifi should pay you for doing a much better job explaining what's in the box than Unifi has with their terrible instructions. Thanks so much!

    4:17 that black box is required so it can deliver power to the doorbell if it's connected to a chime. Doorbells chimes are designed to short the connection to ring the chime. This box changes the behaviour of the two wires going to the camera so the chime will ring and not disconnect power to the camera. If you had a rear doorbell and you wanted another camera connected, you would have to use 2 of those black boxes.

      Holy hell I wish I saw your comment before my install.
      Just went through 2 days of swapping out chime box and transformer and testing out every part only to find out that I skipped out on that little box because of this video.
      I was getting low voltage warning on the doorbell (14V) and buzzing at the chime. That black box was key to it all. No buzz on original chime, 18V at doorbell, on original 16V 10VA transformer.

    Few things, make sure HDR is enabled. That helps with some back lighting issues. Also I would also suggest turning off the LDC (Lens distortion correction). It gives wider field of view for the camera.

    I have a G4 Doorbell, and do use the custom messages on the little screen managed through my Homeseer home automation hub. These scenarios are when my wife activates the scene when she is trying to get the baby to take a nap, the event disables the doorbell, and changes the message to let people know that the baby is napping and to send us a text.
    In later iterations of the automation I enabled person detection and had it send me a push notification when a person is detected and the doorbell is off so I can be notified discreetly that there is someone at the door without waking the baby.
    I really would love to have some kind of attention-getting animation so if a person is detected, I can have some animation occur to draw their attention to the screen so they can read the message, if not, like you said, the screen is hard to read and I doubt many even see it.

    14 degrees is a non-starter here in Minnesota. It basically eliminates usage for a month or more. I'd buy one if the range was -20 to 110.

      For what it's worth, the original G4 Doorbell has the same rated temp range and there are hundreds of folks online saying they have no issues in Canadian Winters or Vegas summers where temps go well outside of that range. They seem to be very conservative on their temp range on the specs, but I understand if that still doesn't give you the warm and fuzzy about purchasing one.

      In this scenario I've setup a smart outlet for the digital chime that can be programmed as a scene to be performed manually or on a scheduled routine which powers off the digital chime. Works great with many retail doorbells that have IoT voice command integration through your preferred flavor like Alexa, Hey Google or Siri. DnD inside UniFi Protect would be a nice feature enhancement and should be relatively easy to implement given Nest, Ring and others can disable the chime relay inside the doorbell configuration via settings app.

    I wish UI would figure out a way to expand their operating temperature window. In MN, USA, winters very often have stretches well below 14*, and summers can definitely go over 104*. This past winter during a cold period, my older UI doorbell decided it would lag roughly 5 seconds from doorbell push to ring, and would reboot itself when the chime actually rang. UI didn't really have anything to say other than "those are the defined temps" and when pushed, just had me RMA it.

    • @DaveBerthiaume
      @DaveBerthiaume 2 роки тому +4

      As a fellow Minnesotan, I'm more concerned about the 14 than the 104, but isn't it great to live in a state where we can get both?

    • @willcarter7079
      @willcarter7079 Рік тому

      Yeah, operating temp is a deal breaker for me. My front door is on the south side of the house and is hit by the sun most of the day. In Arkansas between July and September most days are around 106 degrees with a real feel of 115 degrees. Most electronics that I own give me an over heat warning when sitting in direct sunlight which is where this door bell will sit.
      🫤 I might still buy it to try it. But I have a feeling that I will have to return it.

      @@willcarter7079what did you end up getting?

    • @willcarter7079
      @willcarter7079 Рік тому

      @@biigsmokee using the first generation nest doorbell. I found a good deal. It works fine in the summer heat. But it has issues when it gets below 40 degrees fahrenheit.
      I'm glad I got it cheap because it doesn't have playback, or the ability to record surveillance footage. It takes forever to load the app so people often have already gone by the time I'm able to speak to them. Since there is no play back, I never know who rang my doorbell. If it weren't for the fact that I set up a second security camera on my front door, I wouldn't have any idea what happened. My security camera is Ubiquiti. I already have a Ubiquiti NVR. After my experience with Nest, I'm going to continue saving up for the Ubiquiti Doorbell.

  • @d01mf

    Sad to hear about the speaker size/volume still lacking. I would not blame the form factor. Any decent smartphone has speakers that would suffice, no?
    It would be great if you could add a direct comparison with the non-pro version. I've seen other reviews mentioning that it's at least greatly improved.
    Another thing I wonder about is the POE adapter. Is it still possible to connect the chime wires to trigger a physical chime? I assume so, just that it won't be powered that way.
    Thanks for a great channel!

    I live in North Texas where ambient summer temp's regularly are in the mid 100's. I also get direct sunlight on my doorbell for about 2-3 hours in the late afternoon. Burned through 2 Ring Pro doorbells years ago and they are rated for up to 120º F. I switched to a Nest Hello doorbell over 3 years ago and have had with zero issues from it-and it's only rated for 104º like Ubiquiti's are. I've been wanting to switch to on-premise storage so I may give this a shot.

    Is the package detection the only reason why you said it is worth the upgrade?
    Over here no one has a porch to receive packages on. If you are not home, drivers will either deliver the package to your neighbours or at a drop-off store.

    This is one of the cases where something's 100% focused on the American market: no door opener functionality if you have an actual gate and are not have your house door freely available for everyone to reach. No functionality for a fixed mount monitor inside the house. No functionality for hooking it to a fixed mount comm inside the house. This really only works If you have it directly next to your front door and then the only extra value is to not have your package stolen because you don't have a fence.

    104 degrees? If that is accurate I'm very disappointed I have a modest home network with Ubiquiti equipment. I just added a Cloud Key Gen2 Plus and was thinking of installing Protect with a Doorbell Pro but it won't work where I live in AZ. It regularly gets well above 104 degrees and that's just ambient air temperature let alone direct sunlight; which my front door gets in the afternoon. My Ring Doorbell Pro 2's operating temperature is -5ºF to 120ºF and even then when it's in direct sunlight I get the little fan icon in the Ring app. Video will still work but the other features won't. I'd say it hits 130 in direct sunlight, that would melt the G4 I assume. Plus it's huge IMO.

    Great video, thanks for the in depth review. Is it possible to use that doorbell with any door unlock mechanism such as the electric strike lock from ubiquity? It seems to be made for the access hub, but I wonder if there is any solution for the G4 doorbell pro to actually open a door without a mechanic key...
    My only idea is to have the G4 doorbell pro and the access hub ONLY for the strike lock, but that seems like an overkill - any ideas or suggestions??

    Are these cameras proprietary to UniFi Protect or will they work with other NVR's like Blue Iris?

    Shortsightedness for Ubiquiti. They should have made the screws the same locations as the old doorbell since many will upgrade. Also, they need to offer way more angle options. I had to get a 70 degree angle bracket third party. And now with the larger size I’d have to wait for the aftermarket to catch up again. Ugh. Not that it matters. Ubiquiti can’t actually sell any of their new products anyway. They are all always sold out.

      Typical, Most stuff from Ubiquiti Is offered elsewhere before being available in Canada. Hell, there isn't an early access section offered in the Canada store. You have to log into the US or Europe store to see what's coming out.

    Hey Chris, how about a video about Ubiquiti and their supply problems? For what's the point of promoting any of their camera products when the chances of being able to buy one after watching your review are slim to none?

    Seems to be the same issues as Ring Doorbell? App response delay and speaker issue. Package camera is really not needed. You will get notify either way anyway (by email, text, or just doorbell activation. And as noted on the video, it has to be in specific area. You can't predict where the package will be left at.

    do you have to have infared enabled for the path light and package detection? Pretty sure you do for the light but not 100% for the package detection as its not that reliable. only detected 2 packages so cant confirm also not getting text notications on those two package detections...

    How’s the software support for the thumbprint reader? I’ve got an existing smart lock that can be controlled over an api so it’d be really cool if I could get the fingerprint reader to open the door.

    It puzzles me why Unifi did not bump the doorbell camera to 2k (like the G4 Instant) given device size and give the package camera the same FoV as the accompanying doorbell camera. A package left at Chris’s front door would not be visible on either camera.

    Chris @crosstalksolutions ... quick question... Have you found a way for the Doorbell push notification integrate with a Unifi Talk phone? I finally have been testing one of the phones, have it configured in my home office... and it would be really nice if when somebody pushed the doorbell, it would pop up the video and notification of the doorbell... seems like an integration miss... unless it's there somewhere and I just haven't been able to find it. Thanks in advance for any info...

    Is there no WDR(wide dynamic range) setting for the doorbell camera? Even D-WDR would help quite a bit for being able to see faces better under the shaded porch

    Is there ay special setup that needs to take place to access the live video ( such as when the doorbell rings) when you are not on the local network ? Or does it pretty much function like the ring doorbell remotely?
