The doorbell button and chime are wired in series and pressing the button short-circuits it, fully completing the circuit to fully power the chime. The light bulb in the button lets a low enough current through that it doesnt affect the chime much but the video doorbell needs to draw a lot more power, hence the additional chime accessory so it can do that without the chime buzzing all the time.

I mean he technically overclocked it in a sense, he swapped to a better battery.
then drops it
The doorbell button and chime are wired in series and pressing the button short-circuits it, fully completing the circuit to fully power the chime. The light bulb in the button lets a low enough current through that it doesnt affect the chime much but the video doorbell needs to draw a lot more power, hence the additional chime accessory so it can do that without the chime buzzing all the time.
When i read the title i kinda thought you were just fed up of cold callers and was wiring a shock element to the buzz as like a channel super fun type of thing

@Takeshima antivank HK loves Trump2020 it's not like Linus himself has $20m in his bank account. It's also the principal of it, he talks about how much he hates being forced to purchase a subscription just to use the hardware he already bought/owns.
Being linked to a subs service also means that they can just turn it off whenever they want... If the service goes, you're fucked unless you have local storage.

"It's wi-fi only." Well, I would think that having a cable granting access to your home network only protected by a plastic doorbell right at your front door would not be the greatest in security.
Oh you made a great point there
Nah, that’s crazy talk...
;)
To be fair, you would probably have that ethernet on an isolated VLAN anyway, and you'd pretty quickly discover a random ethernet cable hanging out on your front porch lol
You act as if Wi-Fi is very unsafe and like it'll just easily be worked around. It's safer than using some company's cloud server.
@@anastasiao4036 I didn't "acted" like that at all. Just pointed out that WiFi *is* safer than having an ethernet port at your door.
Normal people: *list of breakers written on the inside of the breaker door*
Linus: *writes them on his phone*
No wonder it took him 3 hours 😆
4:38 - Linus: looks at the phone to see the breaker layout "It's all I could possibly need"
Linus: doesn't see the massive blank inside panel of the breaker box that he could permanently stick the layout on to.
... in all seriousness, that's why breakers are labeled in the box - so if an outlet starts going haywire, it can be quickly deactivated. Having to get the phone, then find the image to check out what breaker needs to be flipped, is an unnecessary time risk. Please print onto a piece of label paper, and then it's simply always there.
"Cable companies, of all people, aren't even that evil. You just pay for the subscription, and they drop off a cable box at your house"
[Laughs in monthly rental fees]
Yeah I wonder if it is different in Canada? They can't charge rental fees? I dont here in the US but I provided my own hardware.
@@stayupthetree I'm in the US with Spectrum and I only have internet from them but they don't charge for the modem. I just have to return it if I cancel their service.
@@stayupthetree For me, it's being stuck with rental fees for the set top boxes, and rental fees for the router, of which I was forced to upgrade from a previously perfectly acceptable model. I could supply my own for the router, but then they screw you on cutting pretty much all MoCA handling.
@@TheCobruhAlienat0r Same. Modem is included with the internet service but the router and cable box are extra and have monthly fees.
But it varies from ISP to ISP. afaik AT&T and EarthLink require you to use their modem and has a monthly fee.
@@ej_tech I use my own router cause the one they would provide sucks. But I know they charge for it and can see the appeal for tech illiterate because the ISP will support and troubleshoot any issues you have if you have their router. You can even use you're own modem if you want.
I agree with Linus, I paying a subscription fee for my doorbell seems innately wrong.

Linus: 'are you tired of monthly subscription fees?'
Me: I bet neither glasswire nor PIA or freshbooks are the videos sponsor ...
At least they aren't as jimsterling says fee to pay
Pay an upfront cost to be able to pay more as subscription
He used his cable, that he pays EVERY MONTH, like a subscription and still has to pay hardware rental fees ( most likely) as the counter point to the Ring subscription. Ring subscription is a yearly fee and is way less than what you would pay for rental fees for cable hardware.
@@mask86 but you dont own that cable hardware, a new model comes out you get a free upgrade anything weird its not even troubleshooting the issue with the cable box they just replace it for as long as you have their service. Its about reducing your unneeded subscriptions with comparable solutions that dont require it.
My dad bought a Ring doorbell 2 years ago, and stopped paying the subscription about 6 months after install. It's basically being used as a prop to scare away people with potential mal intent. Thanks for this video!

Having a box that is supposed to be inside the wall and looks like it's not supposed to be sticking out isn't the same as having something that is purposefully there to angle the camera.

I love it how real Tech Engineers hate using technology in their home. While Tech Enthusiasts love using technology in their home.
those are massive rabbit holes and security traps, and few enthusiasts really acknowledge or understand it. It does not often suit an engineer needs because it mostly depends on services you can't control yourself. For instance, someone gifted me a RGB strip with a Bluetooth controller, problem is, I want to be able to control colors automatically without having to use their application. I wanted to create a controller myself but there was no specifications about how the strip worked and it was a shady brand no one knew about. I just ended not using those LEDs because of the lack of control.
Well, that’s why they are called enthusiast, also engineers usually love using technology at home, it just is DIY rather than brand name since you can make it look and work exactly the way you want
Idk, both my dad and uncle are electrical engineers they both use security cameras at home.
@@Freezee42 What brand of strip? I don't think I've seen a strip that wasn't straightforward.
