    This is currently the best setup for reliability for this motor,500cc's tend to blow up if pushed any harder than stock hp so dont even think about big bores,530cc next model engine is stronger and can take a lot of beating even get turbocharged and be reliable,this info is all from testing through the years being a mechanic and tuner

    Brilliant Man, you are a STAR - I'm just a rider with little mechanical abilities but love tech! So, got the Honda NC700D Integra instead, because it is more of a utility machine! Have just done a 6 day 2000 mile trip and it really shined, there were 10 other bikes from 390 to 1200 cc, not one of them could out gun me to 40mph so the concensus was from the other riders, respect!! Also, one day was 4 hours at 75 mph and still the little beast did not dip below 60mpg!
    Still want a TMAX though because it is lighter, lower, easier to mount and cool - but Mr Honda still wins because the 700 is a frame you can hang all sorts of luggage on, unlike the TMAX!

    What a great video, very informative, bought a 530 in 2017 after one to many spills meant left knee very painfull on bikes so needed the extra leg room of a scooter, liked it so much i'm now on my second with a 560, after much deliberation on a little more acceleration opted for a chain and sprocket to get more power at the back wheel, was going to suggest this as a potential mod but then realised the 500 is already chain drive lol, great to see someone pushing the TMAX rather than sticking a big screen on the front and a top box they are great machines.

      I wish we could get the later models here. It's kind of sad that the US doesn't get big sporty scoots. The touring/commuting crowd is basically the big scoot market here. No, the TMAX is not a sport bike... but it's got a lot going for it if people could forget that their friends will chuckle when they say they have a scooter.

One thing I did not see is the racing SPRING for the rear plates, it is a must and usually comes in the Variator kit set. Another excellent video Brent.
    Was waiting for this one to come out, and see the results of the fuel controller.
    Like you, i found stock Tmax 500 acceleration underwhelming ( especially so, after also owning large capacity two stroke scoots, that have no deficiency in that area ) and after getting a Yoshi R77 system myself a few years ago, made things even worse.
    Finding a Malossi Force Master 2 was difficult ( as its mostly discontinued, in favour of the Force Master 3 for the more current 530/560 Tmaxs's ) ebay was pretty much my only option, and while the item price was fine, postage was clearly a price gouge to get more money but i guess it is what it is.
    A Multivar will be next on my Tmax shopping list.
    I guess for you, its cams and a 560 kit ?😬

      What I hope to do is leave it alone and ride, but we'll see how that goes.
      DynoJet makes a Power Commader for the TMAX 500 that is on clearance for roughly $100 less than the Force Master. The reason I didn't go that route is that it says it only has a tune for a stock TMAX and I wanted plug and play as easy as possible. That said, if you have a wideband to use as I did, I think you could work out a better tune than the Force Master most likely. The Power Commader actually lets you modify the tables rather than only have dials, so it's more customizable.

    • @stephengardiner8417
      @stephengardiner8417 Рік тому

      @@49ccscoot yeah, a power commander would be better, but it requires a dyno and a tuner that knows what they are doing.

      @@49ccscoot in Europe a lot off peopel do it. With the base turbo kit you can run 0.8 bar without any engine modifications and get around 80 hp on the rear wheel. The engine can take this easily and many turboed tmaxes have over 80.000 kms. Just look up Marco Magistrati on YT he makes a lot of videos on his turbo kit

    Tmax models do vary - that model Tmax (mk3) is great, but it is slow off the line, and putting new variators or other similar things help a lot. However, the standard setup works well at high speed. The variators on later models - especially from 2017 on - work much better, and I'd expect smaller gains from transmission work. The 2017 ones on are rocket ships! DrPulley sliders are an easy mod that improve acceleration greatly, and are far cheap than a new variator.

      It sounds like you should try to increase fuel now. If it runs well, you might get away with it. You can check local shops with dynos. Some will do a dyno run fairly cheap, so you may be able to find out if you really need it.

  • @neiltorr6331
    @neiltorr6331 Рік тому

    You will get actually better results, without having to spend big money on fuel controllers and a replacement variator, by addressing some things that you didn't. First, just putting on a Yoshi KILLS the low-end torque, by eliminating too much necessary back pressure in the exhaust stream. We tried one on my brother's 2009 Tmax 500 with 15 gram Dr. Pulleys and it killed it off the line. Almost unrideable.
    He sold it off and imported a 2012 Tmax 530 to California from Canada (Yes, doable and legal!). My initially modestly modded 2009 Tmax 500 and his 530 with Dr. Pulleys pulled hard from rest to 65 MPH dead even. Then, we put an MIVV "Stronger" exhaust on the 530, which was freer-flowing BUT with correctly sized ID exhaust pipes. It threw codes for about 3 minutes as the ECU adjusted and then BAM! Side-by side he now would pull away up the freeway ramp never looking back! Don't create a problem!
    (MIVV doesn't list the "Stronger" for the 500, but it fits perfectly! You just have to replace the 4 downpipe mounting studs with the longer ones that Yamaha went with on the 530 redesign...)
    So, TIP#1: get the correct exhaust!
    Next, going with even lighter weights to move into the heart of your torque band for response and acceleration is going about it the wrong way. You have everything apart to put in Dr. Pulley sliders, which actually lower your initial "gearing" a bit by setting the variator halves further apart at rest, due to the geometry of the Sliders.
    To give you a higher rpm baseline under full throttle, all you need to to is use the factory torsion controller (which you should have taken apart to lube ANYWAY!) as it's designed to work, and change to a Malossi "White" spring and torsion control plate. Gives you about 800 more RPM across the board under full load. Acceleration curve remains as set by the stock variator with Dr. Pulleys. Midrange response in MUCH better, as you are in the heart of the torque curve!
    TIP#2: Fix the Torsion Controller to actually match the Torque Curve!
    Now, there is still the elephant in the room, the stock ECU LEAN MAPPING. It tries to keep everything at a stochiomentic14.7:1 fuel ratio as much as possible. BAD idea for acceleration whenever needed and high speed running (80 mph to 115mph+). Again, it's an EASY fix that is CHEAP! First, install a Malossi Lamda Emulator in-line with the circuit to the O2 sensor. BAM! All the lean Idle and off the line hesitation is GONE!And then, once you are rolling, the delay/modification in that signal from the O2 sensor richens it up initially when you nail the throttle. Great!
    Except for the fact that the fuel delivery is CRAP. The stock fuel pump, which eventually FAILS on everyone, can barely push out 2-2.2 BAR at best. That's why the top end goes flat, there is not enough supply available for the injectors at high speed full throttle. Doesn't matter if you have a Magic Controller, there's not enough to work with. So, put a high-pressure Quantum Fuel Systems fuel pump in, with a Polini 3.5 BAR Fuel Pressure Regulator installed. No flat spots, no hesitation, no high-end starvation. More fuel with more pressure and better atomization!
    TIP#3: Fix the Fuel Supply!
    What do you end-up with? A very reasonably-priced BEAST of a Tmax500. Pulls from rest to 100 mph without ANY hesitation, tops-out at a corrected 115 mph. 0-60 is a tick above 5 seconds, mid range passing uphill just GOES, and still gets around 50 mpg on tour. Work WITH the bike's design, not against it!
    (Disclaimer: That is with the GIVI AirFlow windscreen, which adds much needed aerodynamics above 80mph to the stock BRICK that is a Tmax. It's THAT GOOD.)

    • @49ccscoot
      @49ccscoot  Рік тому

      #1 : Exhaust : Is the Yoshi ideal? Maybe not. I've designed and built my own exhausts, so I get it... but in this case it was different. I wasn't going to get an exhaust at all. The Yoshi was cheap on eBay. I tried it. I like it regardless. Not spending more money on another pipe. Good luck finding the info about pipe sizing etc... without someone directly telling you, so thanks for sharing that info here.
      # 2: Torque Driver : It was just cleaned, inspected and smoothed out prior to this as part of maintenance. It would be silly to take it back apart. I did install a fresh stock spring during maintenance, just because they are cheap enough and I wasn't sure what I'd find pre-service. I've tuned a whole lot of setups over the years and I'm not convinced that contra spring is the answer. Generally if there is not belt slip adding spring pressure makes less power and wears belts faster. What actually happened when I have tested the two practices side by side was that I couldn't tell any real difference in stiffer contra with heavier weights vs softer contra with lighter weights. Could be that this case is different though, I haven't tried it on the TMAX.
      #3 : Fuel Supply : I do have a later model pump, to fix TMAX fever. That's the only fuel system mod aside from the controller. If it is going lean, the wideband didn't tell me. I could get it well into 12:1 WOT wound out... it just didn't perform quite as well there.
      For me, what I did worked. I don't disagree on the pipe. It clearly went slower with only the pipe. I have a PowerBronze windscreen that I cut down so aero is probably better than stock... but I'm a big dude that doesn't tuck down so well regardless. Net net is that I enjoy the bike a lot more now and the only way I plan to do much more right now is if something goes and I "have to" build a 560.

    Sounds to me like a huge amount of work and cash whilst effectively losing any guarantee that may have existed on the bike whilst missing out on just riding , and a second or so on the standing 1/4 mile sounds important if you were racing but is of little or no consequence on the road..Buying a mint condition Gilera GP800 with 74 (ISH) HP V-twin would have made a way way bigger difference cos when it comes to performance..Bigger is better, however the best thing about this video is how well it illustrates just what a " rabbit-hole" of expense and complexity you go down chasing tiny performance gains which might be significant on the track, but almost irrelevant on the road..what I was impressed with was your logic and measured approach to the search for speed and performance, and a well delivered commentary and a compelling argument to leave the bike in relatively standard trim given the bikes power to weight ratio being the biggest hurdle and it's longevity being potentially compromised..it also highlighted the greatest proverb..." Every solution breeds new problems" but hats off for a really well made video indeed!

      For me, it actually transformed the scoot to something that I enjoy so much more than ever. Well worth the effort/expense for the variator. Exhaust is more or less just fun and not really worth it otherwise. I'm way more confident merging into traffic and those sorts of things.
      I would consider a big Gilera. I'd love to have one. Not so easy in the US. People don't like scooters here that much so big scoots don't sell. To my knowledge, the 800cc and over stuff never sold here. I've never actually seen another TMAX like my year in person and I've seen 1 or maybe 2 of the later ones when they brought them back in 2015 or 2016 before immediately taking them away because no one was buying them.

    hello brant, great report, tested very well. I have the same components in it and the speed display is short. I don't have this with the old Malossi Vario, does the belt slip or why is that like that? Did you install the original belt or the one from Malossi x Belt Kevlar? Kind regards, Nello

    • @49ccscoot
      @49ccscoot  2 місяці тому +1

      I've just been using the Yamaha belt. When you say the speed display is short, do you mean the way it doesn't show speed till it's already moving pretty fast? That's some sort of issue with the speedometers on these. All of them do it to some degree from what I've seen (at least older models). If it were belt slip, RPM would increase and you wouldn't be accelerating. If you mean it's not going as fast, then maybe you have an issue with roller or slider weight, the belt is worn too thin, there could be slip or some other CVT issue. Observing RPM would help. If you want it to go fast, then RPM needs to be around the powerband.

      @@49ccscoot First of all, thank you for your quick answer, sorry for my English. In your video at 12:30 min, the speedometer stops briefly at 20 and 40 or slows down and only from 60 onwards does it rise evenly to 100. This is also the case for me when I mount the Malossi Vario MHT Next with 16 g weights. If I put the old Malossi vario on it with the same weights, it doesn't work. I took different measuring points on the road, the scooter runs the same speed with both Varios, I think if I didn't have the misfires on the speedometer, I would be faster in acceleration with the new Vario from Malossi until I reach the different speed at my measuring points on the street. The speed increases evenly, it doesn't increase briefly as if the belt were spinning. I have the 2011 model, so I think it has a new speedometer.

Most bikes have low exhausts that extend all the way to the rear of the bike and aim back or are low and aim back/out. Plus, other people aren't exposed to the sound for hours. It's not an issue on a 15 minute ride. Besides, many people wear ear plugs just for wind noise.
