CARDASSIAN: Cultural Index

- The villainous serpentine species of star trek! But is there more to them than the arrogant, callous, xenophobic shell they project? Well... kind of. But not much more.
More so than most other cookie cutter races in Scifi, the Cardassians seem a product of their culture far more than just bland stereotypes of "the smart aliens" or the "warrior alien" and so on.
This is the Cultural Index a series aimed at exploring various Science-Fiction species.
For outsiders to a series to get to know the basics and maybe even hardened Sci-fi nuts might discover something new.
Thanks for watching!

Everyone who loves the Cardassians should read "A Stitch In Time" by Andrew Robinson. It's an autobiography of Garak in the form of letters to Dr. Bashir that Garak writes while helping rebuild Cardassia after the Dominion War, and it's excellent!
Personally I was more a fan of Vulcan love Slave but to each his own. It’s a better seller in deep space.
Garak made the Cardassians interesting.
Dukat had a pretty deep story aswell.
Any of you read the Terok Nor series of the Lost Era books, or The Fall trilogy, I think it was? There you'll get even more background on them, made by the authors. But I still don't really like them.
as much as I LOVE the character of Garak, we still gotta acknowledge the actor who portrayed the first Cardassian in Trek: Gul -Macet- Dukat!
It's the most fleshed out race in all of Star Trek, hilariously.
@@iforgotwhyimhere2354 Dukat.
Do the Humans. They are really weird
Planet Watcher at the same time, quite a few humans appear to have a near religious fanaticism for non religion, claiming to not worship the worship of non worship worship... worfship
Sorry, but blaming religion doesn't explain human behavior.
@Reee Monro Yes you are LOL! Seriously though, I've come across both weirdos and jurks. With sentience comes evil, and with existence comes imperfection.
So weird, that logic does not apply. Spock would agree.
Jonathan Stiles I dont understand why Libs continue to come in our space, every time you so called people come here, theres an argument. They really have a mental sickness. We have our places, and mentally sick people have theirs.
The Cardassians are possibly one of the most nuanced alien races in Trek, perhaps even more so than the Klingons.
The Klingons are hardly nuanced.
Gul Dukat became one of my favorite characters after watching DS9. The depth of his character really gets me
Easily more-so than Klingons. But I agree, Cardasinan's are really well thought out.
I feel that the Cardassians are the closest analog to modern humans we've seen in Star Trek, using a mix of American and European politics as well as having some traits of 1600s - 1800s Imperial and Colonial Governments. They're almost a perfect reflection of humanity and it's history but with a few dystopian twists.
@@gettingtoastedatq he’s deceptive inwards and outwards. Still exudes evil whenever it’s possible
"My dear doctor you are British, that's the closest a human can get to a Cardassian"- Elim Garak
From which episode is this from?
Yeah, did he really say that? I mean, obviously, I'M Cardassian... or am I?
Ian Warner seems to me Spain would historically be a better mirror. Build up a big empire, bully smaller powers, fight a more advanced power (England) and eventually crumble into nothing as colonies are lost and other powers cripple their once huge navy.
@@HarperStl I tend to associate the Cardassians with 1870-1945 Germany. A strong state and military that shapes public mindset, the perception of their way of life and/or race being inherently superior, their desire to insert themselves in the world/galaxy stage as a new and influential player to be respected and feared (as Germany did in the late 19th century, which was dominated by the UK, France and increasingly the US), and last but not least, their expansionist impulse and attitude towards "lesser" neighbors and their territories (Bajorans always reminded me to the Poles, being an oppressed and deeply religious people who watched their land being sucked dry to give their subjugators "breathing space").
@@nikomann88 Britain seems to fit most of those descriptions you just made. Personally I always saw the Bajorans as like the Irish (although I may be a little buased since I am Irish, although Poland probably does work better) and the Maquis were an analogy for the IRA. In the first tng episode about the Maquis Data literally uses "the unification of the Irish in 2024" as an example of times terrorist insurgencies were successful when talking to Picard. That episode was banned in Ireland and the UK as a result
This was hardly fair
Gul Dukat Bullshit! I thought you die?
Nope. And there's wifi in the fire caves
Gul Dukat I thought you die with sisko?
I am alive! I will ALWAYS be ALIVE!
Check Memory Alpha.
Gul Dukat How's garak.😊😊😊😊😊
I imagine if you managed to befriend a Cardassian, you would have a friend for life.
Merciless Mirror Terran Empire
Certifiably Ingame next the preserver race the first race in the Star Trek universe
Certifiably Ingame oh and I vote for the Terran Empire
It's not torture it's a means of interrogation ;) wink wink
If you have time maybe a video on How Sela manages to indirectly got Romulus destroyed.
Cast my vote for the Terran Empire. However, since there's no much we don't know in the official lore, if there any blanks filled in by other less-than-canon sources, I'd love to hear about them. Like there's a huge chasm between Empress Hoshi Sato and the fall of the Empire and the complete dominance of the Alliance that we see subjugating Terrans in the 24th century with the DS9 episodes.
Kira looked good as a Cardassian
Kira always looked good, especially in the later seasons when she got the new uniform that lost the jacket and showed off her figure more
She rocked the Starfleet uniform, just like Deanna Troi did.
The change in hairstyle also had a nice effect.
Garak agrees.
I once had a dream about a Cardassian. It was measuring somebody for some reason and then Major Kira said, "Is that what you Cardassians do now? Measure people?" and then the Cardassian said (in Quark's voice for some reason, dream logic :/) "No, just this one."
meow point1 Haha
meow point1 hmm. Maybe your mind was like “Cardassian=Garak=DS9=Quark”? But that could’ve been a pretty good scene. If Garak was still a spy during the show and not a tailor, he could’ve taken as a tailor for an episode (to find info on someone he had to kill) and Nerys could’ve been suspicious. So when Garak was measuring his target Kira could’ve interrupted right before he choked the target with his measuring tape
Kira does have a lot of screen time with Dukat and Quark. Maybe you just mixed the two?
I had a dream me and my best friend were being chased by Elim Garak. We were fleeing to the Detapa Council (Civilian Ruling Body (Pre-Dominion)) We raced into an elevator, and it was glass, and we could see Garak just grinning at us.
@@afterglowproductions8547 Did Garak do his Mirror Universe shout of "PUR-SUE!" before chasing you?
7:50 "You've not experienced the movie "Clue" until you've seen it in it's original Cardassian."
I'm probably going to get flak for this but. The Cardassians are better villains than the Romulans.
Agreed
Here have some flak. LOL!
Yeah
I like the Romulans deceptive duplicity more but they are both great villains.
@@CelticVictory Best villan hands down is Palputine. Oh wait, this is Star Trek, not Star Wars, never mind.
Where's the Yamok sauce and Kanar!?
Damar drank the Kanar
I laughed harder at this comment than I think was warranted. :D
Don't feel bad, so did I.
@@CertifiablyIngame I guess Nog already traded the Yamok Sauce for self-sealing stem-bolts then...
@@thevengefulone9139 "I drank a bottle of kanar with Damar...haha, that rhymed."

I'm sure that Garak (who would never, as a mere tailor, aspire to Obsidian Heights) will help 'guide' Cardassia towards being the more noble people of his ideals...
Someone's gotta sew those tears back together.
I wish the Cardassians had their own show before and after the war.
YES
indeed a way to keep up with the Cardassians
I don't want one under the current writers.
Countdown until the makeup departments makes their heads literal spoons and think they're geniuses for it.
Yeah I’d like to see the lead up to the dominion war and it from their point of view.
BlazingOwnager I hate how the Klingon’s look in Discovery
Cardassians are my faves too! I have loved reading Una McCormack's books on Cardassian society. "The Never Ending Sacrifice" picked up where Rugal Pa'Dar left off when he left DS9 to live with his biological father and ends after the Dominion War, and "The Crimson Shadow" is a great Garak book, rife with all types of Cardassian messiness.
Plus, you get a Cardassian woman angry into a heated argument; she'll jump your bones.
There are four lights
You're mistaken. There are five.
@@murakumo65
Sure. There's the four behind the Cardassian, and the one in the ceiling.
O'brian is the only one who got acqutted in a cardassian court! :D
His lawyer was the first defense attorney to ever win in a Cardassian court as well.
@@Blasted2Oblivionand the last
It'll never not be hilarious that the Ferengi so bombed as villains that the TNG writer's room had to come up with the Cardassians.
Imagine a courtroom battle with the opposing sides being represented by a Cardassian and the other a Ferangi.
The Cardassians are a much more relatable people for me even more than the humans the way they are depicted
Cardassians are much more similar to modern humans than the humans we see portrayed in Trek, so it's not surprising.
Keeping up with the Cardassians is a full time job! Maybe you should talk to Worf again. :)
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣.
I just realised that The Enigma Tales is extremely similar to a book/play I had to read in English class as a kid.
"An Inspector Calls" is also a murder mystery, where a family is visited by a police inspector, and throughout the length of the story, you find out that each family member was guilty of something, and all of which were connected to the murder victim.
My second favorite species. Their rebels were always so polite.
The stalemate could be an indicator of their strategy skills. It could also be an indicator of the Federation’s motive of seeking peace and negotiation, while having moral limits that the Cardassians lack.
In one of the quantum universes seen on ST:TNG, we see a Cardassian ensign in a red Starfleet uniform on board the bridge of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D.
Thanks very much for making this one, very educating! I love Cardassians.
The United Federation of Planets is keeping up with the Cardassians.
Thanks for another great video Rik! Cardassians are one of my favorite Star Trek aliens and this was a really good watch.
Dukat is definitely my favorite Star Trek Bad Guy
Gul Evek is one of only 2 antagonistic characters (the other being Q) that appeared in the three 90s Trek series, TNG, DS9 and VOY.
im not gonna lie.. i've been binging your content for the last 4 days.
awesome stuff!

I came here because I'm fascinated by these space lizards. Well, some manner of therapsid descendant, technically. Either way, I was not disappointed. Great video.
Dukat's daughter wasn't a 'pureblood' genetic Cardassian, as her mother was Bajoran, so she's not actually an example of how Cardassians would behave away from the homeland.
Love these characters. DS9 would not have been the complex show with interesting twists without them.
Time to Keep up with the Cardassians
i wish that they would move the timeline forword and have a cardassian character
Dude that was totally cool! I've been caught up in DS9 this past year learning everything. I had this dream last night Gul Dukat was back & he was visiting his Son on Dieradan Prime, Outpost 5 who himself was now a man with a son of his own making Dukat a Grandfather. His skin looked so much realler then the series! It had pore texture & a subtle moisture glaze. I focused/zoomed in mid conversation where he stopped his Son mid sentence who was explaining that the Jem Hedar had beaten him. As Dukat looked over his Sons bruised beaten face he exclaimed exhaustively "You are not my Son! No Son of mine would put up with this! I didn't teach him to behave this way!" Then the embodiment of his Son admitted he was a freightened clone & that the Jem Hedar had killed his Son creating him to take care of the child. You could see Dukats patient frustration. I thought he's in observation of the grandsons care & semi attached to the figure of his Son realizing it's not his fault for being a clone, but he's also cross examining what he wants to use him for & if & when he'll cut this imitation weakness of a Cardassian loose.
It was pretty dang vivid & entertaining. I think somebody upstairs with a better understanding of existence, humors my amusement with sci-fi for unknown reasons. Because my mind generates script, set & detail far superior than any movie.
I almost forgot to mention, in the dream the skin had a pinkish tint, not Bajoran either. If the son he spoke of having to Sisko in the series was real, it'd be interesting how that happened.? This would also mean he's not exactly bound by linear existence thru the Pah Wraith.
It was just a dream, but that's an interesting accent/twist. Dukats face was so fleshy & real. I don't want to say like a frogs, but their was just something to it. I knew I was dreaming but I was like okay that's real, not mask or makeup.
The damn Pah-Wraiths or whatever they go by are trying to Far Beyond The Stars you there.
I love the Cardassians so much to be honest, they're just so realistically complex. (And also kinky. )
They are the best Nazis Star Treck ever had. No shallow imitation like the Aryians.
Deep Space 9 is my favorite Star Trek series to date and I‘m not even that much of a Trekkie, the characters and different cultures are just so extremely intriguing!
The Cardassian-Federation border wars ended in a stalemate because Starfleet is militarily incompetent and the Federation doesn't have the stomach for a real war.
They had not at this time, but ask any founder if the federwtion is weak... He would clearly say no the federation beat us, but decide to give US Peace.
Terran Empire!!!!!! MAKE IT SOOOOO!!!!🖖🖖🖖🙏
My god, I was just searching this 3 days ago but you hadn't made it yet, if only I knew how close it was. YOU KNEW! lol, not really, but a happy coincidence for me, no doubt.

Been binge watching these really well done! Also egads I forget how much bigger DS9 is compared to a galaxy class.
DOMINOIN FEATURE DESPARETELY NEEDED.
This is a great job, thanks..Terran Empire next please
Props for making an exactly 10 minute video.
It would be great if you could do Cultural Indeces on the various species of one of the best written shows on television- BABYLON 5.
Legate Damar who was the most quintessential Cardassian in every way, I have recently concluded.
Agreed. Dukat was far too egotistical and manic. Garak well.... is Garak.
"The cardassains are clever and great warriors.it was a constant game it was an honor to kill them." Quote from Kore the dahar master.
Quote the heart Master did not say that one of the crewmen on the martok ship said that
PRC: *Peoples Republic of Cardassia*
The similarities between China and Cardassia are very obvious, especially nowadays. The whole Coronavirus situation, especially with the way they treat black people in their country. the Hong kong Situation , and the way they bully their neighbourss when it comes to the South China Sea. Not too mention the way the CCP's view of the world and their place above everyone else. The Cardassians would definetly see them as kindred spirits.
Nah the cardassians are space fascists.
Exactly. Similar to China
Very good presentation, but you left out one important aspect of Cardassian culture. Cardassians take tremendous pride in ones ability to tell believable lies. This was demonstrated on numerous occasions by the Deep Space Nine Cardassian outcast-recluse, Garrak.
Green Glory I don't think that's for the entire Cardassian culture. I believe those things are only ideal for Garak and Tain (must be useful for the head of the obsidian order) because in the last episode or the one before the last one, Garak's housekeeper Meela states that they were loathsome qualities, but that Garak turns used them for good or something along those lines.
The Dominion War may have been cosmic payback for what the Cardassians did to the Bajorans.
I have complicated feelings about the Cardassians. Sure, they may be self-important, occasionally genocidal imperialists... but MAN, they sure are my kind of self-important, genocidal imperialists.
One of my favorite antagonist species
Would you ever think of doing any of the races from Babylon 5?

I love Cardassians, that whole reptile look!!!
Kind of strange how their govnerment symbol and their military's most common ship class seem to be modeled on each other. I wonder which came first? I mean is the emblem meant to be a stylised ship, or is the ship modeled after a symbol with some older meaning?
I would actually like to see a Cardassian Sherlock Holmes novel.
Certifiably Ingame. Think about doing races and cultures from the Star wars and Babylon 5 universe?
You deserve more subs.
Don't forget one of the more interesting concepts of Cardassians that sadly vanished because of DS9's limited budget compared to the other series - The idea of Duranium Shadows being a key aspect of Cardassian combat, I struggle to find the exact quote but I am certain a Klingon mentioned of the Klingon-Cardassian wars of them being deceptive prey, chasing duranium shadows for extended periods of time.
"The b****y Cardies." Good old Miles. 😊🖖
It’s an exact mirror of Imperial Japan during World War II. They were extremely loyal to the government, they were very xenophobic, and at the end of the war, the country was very destroyed and their Government reformed to be more Democratic.

What game are you playing in between clips? Looks amazing.
Star Trek Online :)
"There are for lights!!!!"
THERE ARE 3 LIGHTS!!!
Can’t tell. Eyes weak, too bright. Looks like 1.
I hate how one lie by a single Cardassian torturer who was already trying to break Picard with other lies (eg. 5 lights) is used to define Cardassian history repeatedly.
And we know it's a lie because we see the problem he claimed it solved still exists. Which raises the question of if that was even a problem before the military took over.
Obviously, the inconsistencies are the result of multiple writers who only cared about creating dialogue for a paycheck, but we are left with that dialogue as canon and have to work out the implications. And the implications are that the good the military did is propaganda that isn't reliable or likely.
It's easy to say after years of occupation that things were worse before as a way to placate the people who are losing any ability to pretend a short term military intervention is now a permanent status.
I liked the Cardassians especially their uniforms. My only problem with them is that it seems like they are too similar to the Romulans. I didn't think there was enough to make them very different culturally from Romulans.
Make Cardassia great again!
Tholi They tried that during the Dominion War
Didn't turn out so well for Cardassia
stardude2006 800 Million killed in one day, 7 Million Cardassian Soldiers gave their lives for the Dominion. 2 million killed in the City the Dominion destroyed

Terran Empire or the Helghast? That's so difficult to decide.
The conflict between the Federation and the Cardassian Union likely only ended in a stalemate. Because the Federation lacks any military initiative, and only reacts to being engaged in conflict.
My Theory is that Cardassians were inferior in Void Battles and used hit and run Tactics there but were way superior at Ground Warfare so the Fed soon wasnt able anymore to justify their Losses
I know this is a bit weird to ask but do Humans (of the Star Trek Universe) and Klingons.
Ds9 is still my favourite trek.
