I don't have twitter, otherwise I could have submitted my build from two weekends ago. It was 4 craigslist sales and a thrift store run to build it.
Total cost of $363 got me a Z87 Pro with 16GB DDR3 2133MHz Ripjaws X and a i7 4770K (the bundle also included a Zalman Max CPU cooler and HD6570 low profile GPU for $150 total), a Noctua NH-U14S cooler ($30 from a different CL seller), a GTX 980Ti SC2 ($150 from different CL seller), a $7.99 NOS Ultra modular 750W Bronze PSU (Goodwill), and a recycled 256GB SSD pulled from a broken HP laptop found in a dumpster; all built into a Lian Li PC-61 anodized black aluminum case from 2001 ($25 from a CL seller who used to work for NORAD and had saved the case from being disposed of just before he retired, he said it looked too cool to throw away).
    I've named it "WOPR Jr".

I had a mix of old and new parts in May 2019 for my $349 Ryzen 3 2200G desktop, now running Ubuntu 22.04 LTS. I used the following used parts:
    - two reused HDDs (500GB + 1TB) with now 9 power-on years! I use 2 x 500GB in Raid-0 using OpenZFS 2.1, a 16OGB subset is running in Raid-1 :)
    - a reused 128GB SATA-SSD as cache drive for the HDDs using OpenZFS 2.1;
    - a 2nd hand 24" Dell 2410h monitor 1080p, 60Hz;
    - an off lease Logitech PS2 mouse and a Dell multi media keyboard from 2 large boxes with stuff, together for DOP500 say $10.
    - I reused a 2-pin case fan, that died on me in March :) Now I use a DOP250 ($5) case fan with a Molex connector :)
New but special was my new $35 xTech Midi-Tower- Combo with:
    - my 600W power supply new, but very classic, it only had a 24-pin; 4-pin; 2 SATA and 2 Molex plugs and nothing else :)
    - a black midi-tower with a 2cm RGB strip for the trapezium sized power key. Blue is power on and red is disk active.
    Cheap was:
    - an $60 ASRock B450 HDV Rel 4.0 motherboard with a VGA plug for my monitor and only a 4-pin CPU power connector :) :)
    Normal prices for:
    - 2 x 8GB Geil DDR4 (3000MHz)
    - 512GB SP nvme-SSD (3400/2300MB/s)
    - a Ryzen 3 2200G (OC 3.7GHz; max 72°C)

As a computer builder enthusiast for over 25 years many of these systems look very similar to my " hand me down systems". Whenever I upgrade, older parts get binned to be used for exactly this thing. What's even more amazing is how well they can play modern games too as long as resolutions and settings are dialed back a bit.

Haha my main computer im still using a pair of Altec Lansing speakers that i've had since somewhere around '05, a long time wow, lol. The Altec Lansing setup i got came with a separate subwoofer box thats pretty big(size of like two shoeboxes stacked ontop of each other for a comparison) and to this day it still sounds great. However i was able to make these 15+year old speakers sound even better though because i hook them straight up to my "sound card" AMP/DAC. So by taking the line in/out cable which you normally have to use to connect the speakers to the motherboard. I instead plug the one end(that normally goes into the mb) into my "Sound BlasterX G6" sound card. "Sound card did he just say?" Yes people still buy sound cards, well their more so called "Gaming DAC/Amp" now and i was in need of one (high-ohm headphones). Which is how i fell upon this particular awesome portable Sound Blaster X soundcard/dac and quickly came to understand its purpose/potential. So unlike typical "sound cards" that have to be installed *in* your computer, the Sound BlasterX G6 is a portable usb sound card. It has separate headphone, mic jack inputs, line in, and line out as well. Basically you will have improved Hi-Res audio for *any/all* your devices *whenever/wherever* you want. I have custom profiles setup now for mine, but just when using it for the first time with the presets that it came with i even noticed an improvement then. Love it.

13:25 Oh man that brings back memories. I "built" my first rig with my dad when I was around 12 (maybe younger, not 100%). He worked for an ATM company and could take all of the retired machines that he wanted home. We made a frankenstein's monster using parts from around a half-dozen old ATM computers to finally make something that could run the Sims and Star Wars Battlefront (og, not DICE). It couldn't fit in a case, so it was on a series of boards and stands all laid out with cables going every which way on a card table. Best "ambient cooling" you could ask for and it was a great experience.
Not long after we were able to get another retired machine that had a much larger case. We upgraded a couple parts and were able to put it all in a case at last. Extra funny because it was an ATM computer case and as a little kid (4 or 5) I sliced open my hand so bad on the corner of one of those same types of cases that I had to get stitches.

For some of the less believable used stuff, I can see it being bought from a friend. I'm definitely sold an old PC to a friend for less than market value. It was a while ago, and the PC was several years old, but a working PC for $100 CAD is probably not something one would see on the open market even when not in the days of scalping. Given where my friend lived at the time, he was basically paying for the gas to drive down and the admission price for the museum I was visiting on that trip.
A friend who's upgrading from a 3090 to, presumably, a 3090Ti is definitely a friend whose finances are substantially greater than my own, but if they're in that good of a spot financially and they have a friend who isn't, I could well see them cutting them a break. There's a point at which getting more money by selling stuff at market value is not really relevant anymore. Most people never reach that point. And some of those who do are so obsessed with acquisition by that point that they either don't notice or don't care. But if you're at that point, you have a friend that isn't, and you're both gamers, I can see passing on a few premium parts that the friend would never be able to afford normally.

Most of my boxes have been top end ancient parts. My last box was a I7 4960x with 32 gig of ddr3 ram, a used 1070gtx, and a ssd and a bunch of used or cheap big hard drives. 6 cores and pretty fast. One before was a I7 980 with most of the same parts as before. My buddy builds systems and networks for a living and he always has leftover goodies he gives me free or cheap.
I paid 300 for the 1070gtx from my buddy with almost no time on it for 300 just before the first crypto destroyed the market.
I have a Ryzen 3900x now he built me for about 550 because he gave me a deal for helping him scrap leftover boxes. The case, board, cpu, and nvme drive were new and I paid extra to get a upgrade to the 3900x and everything else was mostly free for the time I gave him helping scrap stuff.
It's good to help your friends and take some toys in trade or for a stupid price for the help.
Until recently everything I had was used or refurbished for cheap, very few new parts till the new one.

@Michael Dunlap Boo !😁 I also got spooked one night when bolting up from a deep sleep to what had sounded like a loud crash, as if a large glass picture had fallen off a mantle or a major wreck on the nearby main road. Didn't feel like a dream as I don't have those kind or even react to bad dreams of any sort that way. Thinking that logically maybe my cat had broken something in the living room I was startled to discover her sleepily blinking at my sudden movement. Quickly getting dressed I armed myself and tactical advanced on the front of the house and searched carefully top to bottom. Couldn't find a single thing amiss, and it puzzles me to this day. Needless to say by that time I wasn't going back to sleep, wide awake despite lack of proper rest.😁🧟

Ironically I didn't build my dream PC in the sense that I wanted to get an Intel/nVidia one, it's just that I spent so much time watching hardware reviewers and learning that I finally realized first of all nVidia was a total waste of money to me(because I didn't like the way they looked either nor care about RT and nothing else they offered beyond SLI mattered to me, performance only mattered) especially next to a Taichi and because secondly the AMD options came with boxed coolers on already cooler CPUs saved me so much money I could buy a better CPU than already I anticipated and just dumped more money onto the board and storage etc. Wondered if I'd regret Radeon. Didn't.
It's pretty funny actually because I feel like at any other time than that exact year (2020) I'd have built my dream PC on only mid to high end Intel and nVidia parts, since I really did not like or trust AMD at all, it's just that at that time all the other brands sucked and overcharged, so I ended going with an all AMD. Didn't regret it since. Still have a rather affordable upgrade path to Zen3 (still not sure on 5900x, would like to get a 5950x even though I'm not in a position yet to utilize those cores it's just my intuition tells me I'll regret that 5900x now later when I've got projects, or 5800X3D but feel like what I get for gaming doesn't justify the cost and lack of performance).
So come to think of it in a weird sense I built my anti-dream PC on AMD.

    • @yocobicus
      @yocobicus 2 роки тому

@@pandemicneetbux2110 I'm a bit biased as I'm an AMD fan. It's also weird now that we have AMD in the office, I can say it's not great “G-series”. Intel excels at integrated graphics. My 3600x has never faltered at home with the rival as the GPU. I guarantee you; you made the right move AMD processors are built for performance. The CPUs are timeless. A friend once said, hey you don't have 4.0 PCI or XYZ…. I replied: My now mid-grade PC still holds pace. I have a LAN gaming rig made of scrap parts a low end I-5 with a GT 1030 that still holds most games at 60fps on 1080 what more can you ask for. My recommendation would be don't fret. As long as you can play games don't stress about having the best PC. Have the best time while playing on your PC that is what counts.

The whole, "Only used part's", thing makes this kinda tough for me, I think at least one new part exists in every one of my builds.
I'm not opposed to using used part's but most of the time I get new cases, power supplies and storage because of reliability and aesthetics.
My current build has a used CPU (Ryzen 5800X fb market 300) ASrock X570M Pro4 (eBay 65) Thermaltake black widow spinQ CPU cooler (ebay 15*) 32GB 4x8 Gskil CL 18 3600 ram (fb market 85) Gigabyte GTX 1660ti OC (free *)
The case (NewEgg 65), psu (75 NewEgg) storage (NewEgg 240), and m.2 wifi/Bluetooth card (NewEgg 35) are all bought new.
The full build is under 1000 but exact pricing for me is a bit weird.
    * means on the part of the cpu cooler, i got it in a combo so the value is subjective to what I valued that part at. The full cost of that combo was 40.
In the part of the graphics card i bought a slightly used NZXT prebuilt starter plus in may of 2020 for about 800 with tax and shipping included off eBay. I than took out the 1660ti graphics card and put in a 1060 6GB asus dual that was white to match the theme of the build, i also included some rgb fans with remote, a 1TB PNY SSD, some white themed cable mods i than sold the full white themed build for enough to pay for the extra new parts and nullify the 1660ti's cost. So that's why I say free for the 1660ti.
Technically the 1060 6GB had a cost to me but in all the upgrading and selling off old gear I've kinda lost track of the exact costs with some of my builds.
The past couple year's have been rough doing new/used builds.

5 plain black 120mm fans - $0 (leftovers from other builds, 2 Rosewill, 2 Cooler Master, 1 Antec)
40 inch Magnavox 1080p television - $60 locally FB marketplace
used the same wireless adapter and HDMI cables I've had ($0)
    $242 in new parts
Thermaltake UX100 CPU cooler - $18 from Amazon
    Kingston A400 480GB SATA SSD - $48 from NewEgg
650 watt EVGA B5 bronze power supply - $52 shipped from Woot

cablemods extension cables for front panel audio and USB - $28 shipped from Amazon
    Cmhoo XXL (90cm x 40cm) keyboard/mouse mat - $12 shipped from Amazon
since then I've replaced the TV with a different brand but same specs to make it fit my desk better (has legs on the edges instead of a thick center stand
next set of upgrades haven't decided yet, was thinking
R5-5600 and possibly switch to a B550 board
    32GB of either 3200 or 3600MHz memory
a new CPU cooler because the UX100 lights don't work anymore
definitely a new GPU, but still kinda waiting for more price drops
I'd like a 3060ti, but to stay under $350 may have to settle for an RX6600 or regular 3060. I figure I can sell the 1500X/B450M/16GB as a combo for about $150-$200 and recoup some of that upgrade cost. I even have a stock AMD cooler I could install so it's ready to plug and play. And while I should be able to get $100-$120 out of the 970 I will just install that in my wife's computer and keep her GT1030 as a backup GPU, that way she gets a decent upgrade and I get a spare part.

It did not score as well for multi-core but that doesn't matter for me because the things I do on my computer use mostly single core anyway. Just goes to show you that older computers still are fairly powerful to do most things that people are looking to do. Gaming is another matter. I rarely game so I don't need a lot of speed and power. I put a 1600x in my wife's PC (B350 board) back in 2018; however, I can't upgrade to Windows 11; and Windows 10 wont be supported beyond mid-2023.

I stand corrected, Widows 10 support ends in October of 2025. That is good news, as she can use that 1600x processor for 3.5 more years.

(3:35) EVGA coolers: so we go from awesome industrial honeycomb nuclear reactor, to rib cage or whatever, and then didn't they do the stupid clown lips on their cards, or was that someone else? lol

Pretty nice to see others do what i did, buying used parts. I got my cpu, gpu, ram and cooler used. Works like new for almost half price for most. (Other than the 760 that struggles to run sea of thieves at 25fps on lowest settings)

It's a pretty good option honestly although also tbh I'd amend two things I used to say a lot, that first of all you should really not consider a Dell OEM board if at all possible (or expect not to ever overclock if getting a used Optiplex/XPS platform) and secondly it may be cheaper just to get some of the bottomest parts new, like a 10100, 10300, or Ryzen 3 3100 on a trashboard should in some circumstances be cheaper than used parts, depending. And second part section b) you should try getting the RAM+CPU+board all in one package if you can on a place like ebay or craigslist, maybe with included cooler, because I've seen package deals like that going for lower than building a new i3/r3 tier build.
One of the main disadvantages is you're locked into either old enough or low enough parts that it's basically use and bin than upgrade. But even still, it's not that much needed for 1080p or more especially 900p, which is "fine" for gaming. You basically don't even need that kind of high end parts for anything but 1440p/4k new games tbqh. Like even Witcher 3 which is now 6 years old is playable at 4k on a what, GTX 1080? 1080ti? 2070s/5700XT, iirc is 60fps. So really eye candy like Ampere and RDNA2 is basically just that badly optimized Cyberpunk tier stuff at ultra high resolutions/refresh, none of which is necessary to game. You basically don't need anything but a quadcore and a GTX 980 to play nearly anything right now.

I built a used budget system for my brother almost 2 years ago, i5 4460s, 8gb ram, rx 470 4gb, 246 gb SSD and a 2tb hdd, 450w EVGA PSU. The case is from an old Asus prebuilt and the monitor, keyboard and mouse were from Goodwill. It came out to about $350 total.

I wish I had submitted my first ever 'budget' work/play build. I tried to make an AMD based system comparable to the 12 core Mac Pro since I do primarily vector and video graphics work. Final build was almost a 1/4 of the price.

My home desk is 'from work'. At my fist job we all got new desks and we could take our old ones home if we wanted.
Later we all got to take our mechanical keyboards home for work from home and got quiet (worse) ones at the office. When I left them they didnt want it back.

i encountered my first Supra yesterday. i live in Alabama and even though ive seen Lamborghinis, Ferraris, vipers, and even an even more cool/rare Bugatti riding around I've never seen a Supra in person until yesterday. i was at a drag strip and in the spectator parking lot.

I really thought posting a watercooled system made out of used parts would stand out of the crowd.
Guess I should've included the rest of the setup, with an old radio modded to work as speakers and a car seat for the ultimate gaming chair.

I've allways wanted to try the car seat thing.
Are you using a hydraulic and if so where did you find on that can hold the weight.
In the modded old radio. localy people are essentially throughing away non hdmi recevers. They still have spdif inputs and can do 5.1/7.1. Althhough me and my friends usally run 2.1 setups. Wirh some high end gear form the mid 2000's

An AIO is definitely tempting because who really wants to spend $300 on a cooler. There's plenty of 360mm rads that cost more than even a midrange CPU or budget/low midrange GPU. It's mainly about the paranoia of it springing a leak is the thing, because if the motor just dies and it throttles then turns itself off no harm right? Well other than the hundred dollars wasted I mean

I got a 590 Fatboy as a placeholder in my "all open box and factory sale pc", wanted to upgrade later... then the signs pointed to exploding prices so I got myself a 2060super stil as a placeholder.
And thats what Im stil using. Not gonna buy a gpu when it costs more than the rest of the pc combined.

Using used parts is not only cheaper but recycling perfectly good parts! Other than motherboards and HDD, used parts will work for a long, long time and will become obsolete before breaking or wearing out.

  • @LadBooboo

The only parts I'll never buy used are PSU and spinning rust storage unless it's from someone I know personally. A new PSU/storage should never be disqualified.

    • @wayland7150
      @wayland7150 2 роки тому +1

Old storage is OK if it's just gaming. New PSU is important if the computer is for someone else, don't want to risk burning down their house.
