    the yellow audio capacitors are a flex and are much appreciated. also, they're one of the only components that make it still look like a motherboard with all the beauty plates on boards these days. in guitars and amps foil caps and orange drop caps are juicy. they're using actual nice caps!

      @@SourBogBubble I'm not convinced it is overpriced, but it's certainly not affordable. If you need to worry about the pricing, there are most likely way better options for you. In the end this is essentially an expensive toy for people playing with overclocking. You can get something more reliable cheaper if you need something for professional use. You're not going to use sub zero cooling in a rendering farm for example.

    When I started building my own pc's it was with Athlon, yes a long time ago, and I bought a DFI Lan Party which was considered top end at that time. That board is still brought out and used every now and again for projects. These high end boards LAST, their value is in the buyers eyes and the use they will be put into. I could never afford a board of that class these days but, I do appreciate the value and intellectual commitment that goes into producing them.

      I worked for a distributor at the time and we were talking with DFI about carrying their entire portfolio, both the consumer products and the industrial stuff. I had everything ready for our web site, product pages, documentation, drivers and BIOS files. Everything was ready to flip the switch and it would go online. But time went and it took longer and longer to get a response from them. Eventually news came that DFI was leaving the consumer market to concentrate on their industrial products and yet we didn't hear anything about this from our contacts. After months of waiting my boss told me to junk the DFI product pages and that was it.
      I don't know the details but it was kind of sad seeing them exiting the market. But then I welt the same way about Abit and a lot of other brands that died off.
      By the way, DFI is short for Diamond Flower International. They are still around, or at least they were when I checked some time ago, but only have the industrial products, which was kind of nice as far as I remember.

    Hi Jay, I have the EVGA Z490 Dark and it's very good. Having the blank stand off PCB is very handy as well. Just using it without the stand offs is helpful. It's much easier to see what and where everything is on the actual board and it can be tentatively mounted in the PC case to see clearances and exactly how radiators, fans and everything is going to lay out on installation. My next PC will also have an EVGA Dark board.

    • @gutterg0d
      @gutterg0d 2 роки тому +7

      For a board like this you want trusted parts. If they put in some fancy new firmware based switching or designed parts there is a high risk of it causing problems with liquid cooling and the likes.

      @@gutterg0d They could have gone with 3.5mm jumper blocks, or it that's to old school just use the 2.5mm versions... And yes this is a joke. I much prefer dip switches over jumper blocks.
      I agree with you that Dip switches are reliable, proven and simple tech.
      Yes it's old tech, and yet if you buy a server motherboard that cost twice as much you will still get dip switches and very likely some jumpers even on the most modern server motherboard.

    • @A1BASE
      @A1BASE 2 роки тому

      @@gutterg0d It doesn't need to be a firmware solution. Nowhere did I suggest that, so please, don't put words in my mouth.
      Look at the money spent on developing tactile mechanical switches for keyboards / joysticks.... Hell, the bios switch could even be a TopGun style 2-pole switch with a chunky red safety cover, for a ridiculous and extreme example - but using that would be a much more positive experience. CA-CHUNK! You've changed BIOS....
      I refuse to believe that in the entirety of the electronics industry there aren't PROVEN parts that are more satisfying to use (and probably more dependable) than some of the ancient DIP switches used here.
      Imagine out of your safety zone. For products that push limits in design as well as function (and don't pretend that there aren't a bunch of aesthetic choices on this board) getting lazy on the details spoils the overall product experience for an ultra premium product like this.
      But hey, what do I know? I've only $15bn+ of experience of design projects.

    • @gutterg0d
      @gutterg0d 2 роки тому

      @@A1BASE Let us look at the aesthetic choices on these boards, since you mention it. The aesthetic parts is a bunch of heatsinks and covers, that's it. There is literally no other fancy designed components on the board (barring paint). Also DIP-switches are quite uncommon on motherboards, so that actually is a relatively fancy design choice despite what you think about them. On most motherboards that would just be a bunch of jumpers.

    Those are limited runs motherboards really meant for 1 specific market.
    The only reasons I would buy those boards are for how high quality they are build, they are sure guaranties of lasting with those board in normal scenarios and they look really nice. But I would not be giving it justice.

    Out of interest I just checked on the price of this thing. The first site I saw (UK) had that Asus board at £1719 ($2155) then I checked this one and it was £668 ($839) and I though that's not too bad. Now I'm deciding which rock to use to beat my head against because I suddenly remembered that I was comparing motherboard prices!
    Buying the Kingpin board for anything other than it's intended purpose is just a waste of the guys design skills. A vanity build using that board would be a slap in the face to Vince and Tin.

      Motherboards are getting too expensive in my opinion. That being said, if this kingpin board had been released 1 or 2 years ago, it might have been worth purchasing but as is always, kingpin products are always late to the game and new motherboards are going to be released soon for the new Intel/AMD cpus and graphics cards the second half of this year.
      It's simply not worth getting this board at this time.

  • @tarron3237

    That's a real juicy piece of hardware.
    Yet I feel I've become too old for this. All the work you put into your rig is rendered moot very quickly, and for a fraction of the price you get almost the same performance.
    I kinda envy everyone who (still) has the time and nerve for tinkering and otimizing. 'Good enough' has become the new optimal for me. Damn it.. age.. 😂

    • @Marcorix2010
      @Marcorix2010 2 роки тому

      I feel the same to be honest but its mostly due to tinkering and optimising being mostly pointless now. Overclocking being a good example that its just not worth it anymore, everything boosts so well alone and realy all you need is decent airflow there is little point tweaking for 1 fps when you are playing at 120 with a Gsync display for example. Hardware just does it for you now and everything is so quick there is no need to spend time tweaking like there was 20 years ago. I think its less to do with age and more you wake up and realize its just a waste of time.

    • @sloppyprogrammer4373
      @sloppyprogrammer4373 2 роки тому

      Don't really think it has to do with age, more like your interests and priorities have shifted. I'm old (well by todays youth standards at least) and I still tinker and optimize more than I play games.

    I personally love the 90-degree 24-pin power connector. In fact if I had my choice, I would have EVERY motherboard have the power connector that direction. It just makes much more sense from a cable management perspective. Who would really choose a 24 pint connector sticking strait up out of the board just to loop back through a grommet than something that is much flatter laying? And, hell if someone was running custom water cooling pipes, that gives so, so, so much more room off to the right side of the board to run loops.
    Speaking of, I've always been baffled why GPU's stick their power connectors on the front-face of the cards, so now you have to run their power cables underneath and they just dangle under your card. I get they dont want to put them on the end of the long-edge of the board because if your case isn't deep enough, those cables might be hitting the front of your case and even get into your front fans/radiator. But hell I would stick them like underneath the board, way on the back edge where you can barely see them, the connectors sticking strait down, so like you can just quickly run the cables behind a grommet and you barely see them.
    I fucking hate cables and the less of them I see, the better. I dont care if they are braided and "pretty", I want them out of sight as much as possible!

    • @lawleewer1564
      @lawleewer1564 2 роки тому

      It's actually way worse from a 'cable management' perspective. If it were 180º turned, pointing to the back of the case I would agree with you. But a 90º angle just causes unnecessary strain to the cable. Tbh I don't even think my PSU and case would allow the cable to turn in a way that would make the 90º power connector viable. Not only it would be impossible to plug, but it would also turn in such a forced way that it could potentially damage the cable

    Totally agree with you about the 90° ATX connector. At work we've been using the X299X Aorus Master. I really enjoy working with that board, the quality isn't always the best. But one of the main complaints that we had when using it was the difficulties our builders had in connecting the ATX power connector because of the difficulty in getting the connector bent into the routing grommets. However, since we have our cases custom fabricated for us, we just went back to the manufacturer and asked them to enlarge the hole to make it a little bit easier to run the ATX cable. It was a good solution for us, but it's definitely not one that most cases are built around. Especially in the EATX form factor

Clearly not the best but sooooo much better than entry level boards. Beside looking fairly nice, it overclocks with ease, never runs too hot, and XMP actually works like it's supposed to (until this MOBO, XMP was mostly sketchy for me). I specifically bought used RAM, rated for very high clocks, that was panned in reviews for not actually overclocking automatically under standard XMP profiles. The person I bought it off of sold it to me for next to nothing because they could never get it to clock to it's max XMP rating. It worked on the MSI Meg, first try, and still running like clockwork after 3-years.

    Hoping Asrock makes one with the Z670, or wait till Z770 to come out with a new one.
    I'm pretty sure you can still find this board on YT. I still own and use this board

    Thank you for such an interesting and comprehensive look at these two boards. Your knowledge and observations are very helpful, as always.

    With full PCI5 spec support and lane bump on the upcoming z790 I think I'll wait for that.
