Wow chain drive rear wheel drive! Revolutionary! Honda still dominates with their NC Series but yes, this is the prototypical overly-refined answer to Everything Japan. Really not into euro-tard machines excepting perhaps the Royal Enfield but for this extreme an activity I think you're spot on for *"going there"* with this here. Still waiting on Toyota hybrid drive systems to finally start making its way into the twin adventure World where fuel and reliability is such truly a premium.

So it is not as simple as heavy is better in strong winds. Bikes height, and bulk has a great role in strong windy conditions.

Last week I made a 4200 km tour in Turkey. I am really happy with the lightness, agility and power of this bike. I was easily riding with my friend with R1250 GS on highways. On the Offroad much easier to ride compared to GS. Finally, I realised that I really don't need 1200cc heavy machines.

That 890 will be a ton of fun offroad, the large adventure bikes come in to their own when you do big tours like 2 to 3 thousand mile trips. They're super comfy and campable of carrying huge amoubts of weight. Can't wait for the 1300 GS, that's going to be a show stopper

Instead of thinking "how can we make the GS even bigger, more expensive and more powerful? 1200cc isn't enough, we need 1300!", I wish they thought "so the GS is a proven adventure platform with more than enough power, lets see if we can make it lighter!".
I understand this would go against what the majority of what the market wants and that's why they have other bikers in their line-up, but a 210kg 1250 GS would be cool to see.

When shopping around just sitting on bikes, I made a point of sitting on the 890 Adventure at my nearest KTM dealer to make sure whether or not I liked the feeling, even if I planned to ride more on-road than off.
It really liked how planted it felt, even with the wide seat making me end up on my balls of my feet like you appeared to be with both feet down (same inseam!). Just very nicely low center of gravity for a confident feeling. Ultimately not getting one right now but plan to ride one when I can and keep it in mind for more adventure-focused riding when more off-road is available and/or planned!

Ian, I'm really excited about this review, along with your upcoming longterm test reviews. I am EXACTLY where you are concerning my thoughts of getting away from big adventure bikes, such as my R 1250 GS. I test rode a '22 Triumph Tiger 900 GT Pro and immediately bought one. Yes, I own more bikes than I care to admit. EXACTLY as you mentioned, by the time I added all of the protection, aluminum panniers, etc. to my Tiger 900 GT Pro, it all of a sudden lost it's "Schwinn" feeling that initially won me over. Huge BMW fan boy and LOVE my R 1250 GS, I'm one of those "phony" adventure bike riders, who never goes off-road. I simply like the look and feel of an adventure bike. Dying to hear what you think of your new KTM's "highway manners," as that's where mine will spend the majority of its time., in addition to a fair amount of around town riding. My "go to" bike right now is a '20 Ducati Scrambler Icon. I had to dump a bunch of money into it to make it worth a damn. Quite sure the OEM suspension on that bike came from the Dollar Store. The main reason I ride it everywhere is its ease of maneuvering at slow speeds, including moving it around the garage. Not to mention how much easier it is to get on and off it. It's a very average bike at best, but an absolute dream to handle/manuever. I have to get on and off my Tiger 900 GT Pro and R 1250 GS (with the Touratech Ultra Low Seat) like a horse. I'm soon to be 72 years young, 5' 10" and shrinking, along with a pair of "too much football hips." The standard KTM 890 Adventure, with a Seat Concepts low seat, may just be the ticket. Thank you in advance!!!

Great Video… I sold my R and bought the ‘23 “S” (base model) and am loving it. Riding it feels like I’m on my Honda CRF300L as it is so nimble and the low seat height and center of gravity are revolutionary compared to any other similar bike. (I’ve owned a Tiger 800 👎, and have test rode a Yamaha Tenere 👎on back trails of Utah, and test rode a Ducati Desert X which was great fun but a nightmare for maintenance! ) A major plus is being able to remove the air filter in under 2 minutes which is a huge deal when riding in dusty conditions!

I went from a F850GSA to the 890 Adventure /s and I couldn't be happier. The F850GSA took at least a half dozen "naps" in the 3,500 miles I owned her, one at a stop light. I was just looking at a text message on my phone, which was handle bar mounted, while stopped at the light when I realized I was going over. There was just no stopping that 550 lb top heavy monster from going over. Rear steps out in a clay rut - over you go. Come to a stop and you didn't realize there was a slight rut under your left foot and over you go. On the 890 I just reached 3,500 miles and no "naps". None even close. Tail end steps out off road no problem to bring it back. Slight rut under that left foot - no problem. Seat height, weight and center of gravity are physics, one should stack physics to their advantage.
An interesting test of all ADV bikes would be a "lean test". How many degrees to each side can you lean the bike before it takes a certain amount of force, say 75 lbs, to keep it from going over. I bet the 890 would win this test hands down.

Can't wait for the full reviews! I test rode the Adv and Adv R. I'm 5'9 and the Adv was so prefect for me. R was a bit tall, but doable. Now I want to test ride the 901 Expedition to see if maybe that is the perfect in between, with all the lux items that the Adv has, but also the better suspension that the R has! Bring on your reviews of the Adv Ian, thanks!! 🏍💨

Well done, this Bike is Pitch Perfect. We here in Germany has 2 Years Warranty also on the R Model. I chose the new R Model in case of looks. i am Short (171cm) so i maybe has a struggle on tecnikal tracks but if i lay it down that did not bother me. before the 23 Model i owned a 21 Model 890AdvR and ride 30000km on it with not one issue. Now my son drives its.
Good luck and i allways look at your Videos cause the arguments u bring are true

Great choice. I should have bought the base model 890 instead of the R model that I currently ride. The extra cost isn't justified and I don't really use the additional capabilities. I do use the cruise control and the most important option, the heated grips. On a few occasions I have used the rain mode but generally I use the factory settings for road and off road. These bikes aren't really light weight so I have reverted to my old DRZ 400 for most off road (trail) riding. Due to the size and weight my 890 has largely become a touring bike that handles gravel or unpaved roads for which it works reasonably well.

Thank you for this report. I'm considering options for ADV -type bike which wouldn't be big 1200+ family member - to heavy, too pricy, too high.
Ducati Desert X, KTM Adv 890, Triumph Tiger 900 .... or even smaller ones like Aprila Tuareg or Honda Transalp. They are just fine for off-tarmac fun for passionate rider.

Great to hear your rationale for doing pretty much what I did with my 1200GSA to a 2022 890 Adventure. Sure, I don’t have the front suspension adjustability but stock is so well judged for my 165lb I doubt I’d use it. My swap was via a DCT ATAS which whist a superb bike honestly didn’t get by the GSA’s shortcomings for me and pretty much those you list. My 890 is a great bike that bit by bit I’m adjusting to my needs not least to get as close to the GSA riding position which was, for me, perfect. The “Ergo” seat is a softer plank than stock so a work in progress and spot lights are next just to give road presence which both the GSA and ATAS clearly have and the 890 even in orange doesn’t. One last reason I like the base model is that I don’t like the orange frame! Look forward to the next video. Cheers, Ian

Yes! The ability to check/change the air filter quickly is wonderful. I added a spong prefilter at the bottom of the airbox chamber where the water drain ports are because lots of dust can sneak in there.
Also at 5'8" 30 " inseam, I LOVE the low seat height in either position. It is quick to adjust, and so i will ride it in the tall setting on the highway milee, but once i get to offroad destinations, i will lower i the seat so i can have better leg/foot control in more challenging terrain.

FYI....my friend purchased an 890 last year - loves the bike. HOWever, there were rumors they have camshaft issues - he disassembled the top end last month and sure enough, one of the Cam Journal bearings were eaten away - his bike had only 7000km (4400mi). Him being a Motorcycle Mechanic for over 35 years, did some research and found out KTM has parts built in China and assembles them in Austria. Although his bike has a month warranty left, 2 to 3 months wait for the parts!! A Rockwell Hardness test on the Camshaft Journal vs. a Camshaft from a 1999 CBR found the metal on the Honda cam to be 75% harder then the KTM cam. THAT is major QC issue and another one to the list of ongoing KTM problems I have heard of! Buy a T7 and avoid future headaches!

Nice intro sum-up Ian! I bought the exact same bike and have just started to get adjusted. Coming from a 1290SAS it instantly felt a bit small. Being 6"3 I found that the seat in the highest position worked very well. And that resolved minor buffeting issues also. Threw in the Ergo seat, stock a bit too much on the hard side for me, plus the ergo has a better shape.
Of other things, extra lights, risers (17mm KTM) will go on later this week. the GPS bracket, puts the GPS in an ideal position for me at least. Else I've put out a post on my blog (not so much a vlogger) on my website where I sum up my likes/dislikes. Interesting to see your next videos! I'm settled for this season, whether for the next remains to be seen but not unlikely! Cheers.

When they came out with the Adventure in 2019 Brett Tkacs did a video on the std. model and said it was more than enough for most ADV riders. The new 890 is even better and agree with your reasonings and assessment. I have a 790 R because I do pound it off road quite often and appreciate its capability for that. Going on 20,000 trouble free miles. Fantastic bikes!

IMHO the Tuareg should be able to do all you can do with the 890. For me they are quite similar. For a more road oriented big adv bike I would have kept the GS or get a 1100 AT. Your garage setup was perfect with the exc 350, tuareg 660 and GS 1250 (and the ATV we see sometimes in the background)!!!!!!!!!!!! Looking forward for the next video.

I agree. Too much overlap in his stable. The KTM 890 is slightly less weight and more power than the Tuareg 660. With all that being said, something like the KTM 890 Adventure R could be that "one bike" if you needed it to be. I have seen a KTM 890 Adventure R keep up with me on my Beta 430. And I road with a KTM890/Norden 901 over 5,000 miles deep into Canada on a road trip.

And it is still way lower than the R version and more comfortable to ride anywhere and it matches my 260 pound weight!
