NOTES:
1. Long video, I know. You asked me to publish it all together instead of in episodes. Use the chapters, you don't have to watch in one sitting.
2. Apologies for the muddy audio in the tour/features section, GoPro failure (again).
3. Subscribe and don't miss the rest of the series (trips, modifications, comparisons).
4. Are KTM's reliable? Honestly, I don't know. If you plan to ride a TON of miles, I'd stick to a Japanese bike.

Great video. Must have convinced a lot of people to get one of these amazing bikes.
I never noticed how asymmetrical the fuel pods are
That would really bother me
Is the norden like that too?
Also why no wind shield spoiler/lip as usual? How does the wind protection/noise compare to the Tuareg
Best review on the internet, normal guy with everyday experiences.
Just got a 23 Ktm 890R because of your videos, thank you for the great content, ? Is what cell phone holder do u have in this video?
About reliability, my bike is a 2019 with 27500 km on it. Not a single problem except a battery that’s needed changing.
Even in the name of science, the sound of a dropped bike is the most frightening for any biker. It’s like hearing a puppy get hurt. It’s both violent and sad…
...I still hate much more the one muffled by my body (and trust me, I fall a lot in dirt) :D
Total cringe moment
it's built to fall over
I drop my three times on average every time I go on the trail. So far I had no problems. Just some very mild scratches on my fuel tank protector. However, I have a 22 model. It's just plastic insofar metal
@@kloppskalli Thanks for the incredible new information, Captain Obvious. Question, since your wisdom and knowledge knows no bounds: will Christmas be on December 25th this year? Thanks for enlightening me.
Just bought a new 890 adv but from previous-old version, cost me about 30% less than the 2023 model, and it came with the tech pack with no additional charge..
Since I don’t really adjust suspension, I couldn’t resist the price difference and took the old one.
Riding it 3 weeks already and very happy with it.
Just to be sure you are aware, KTM has put out a software update to deal with the preset ride mode being forgotten by the ICU. Truly appreciate all your hard work in getting the most detailed reviews I've seen out there. Thank you.
I'm loving the updates they have made to this bike over the last few years. Attention to detail. ❤
This is another wonderful review! Very thorough and as good as I’ve seen done anywhere. All you need and no fluff! Thank You Sir!😊
Outstanding job as usual!! I really appreciate the "drop and pick up" demonstration, and it seems to be something that is somewhat unique to your channel(in my experience). I just want to say that personally, I would totally understand if you somewhat "placed" the bike on the ground as opposed to letting the bike free fall from the upright position.😃 It's painful for me to watch, so I can only imagine how hard it is for you!!..just saying. Appreciate all your hard work and dedication! Looking forward to the next video! Thanks man!!
Another excellent review, as usual Ian. Thanks to your experience and in-depth knowledge, it is a great service to consumers and the sport of adventure riding. Keep up the great work!
Thanks for all your effort! Really appriciate your channel. This is the only channel I follow in terms of all my get to know stuff. Just fantastic!!! Well done❤
I bought a 2020 KTM 790 Adventure S in December 2020. Added a few additions to it, But overall one of the best Motorcyles I have yet owned. Does every thing. LOVE IT !
Amazing chanel!
Very complete!
Drops a new bike. That's commitment excellence.
Great reviews. The best.
Thanks.
Ian, my local KTM dealer chose the standard 890 adventure over the R as his personal bike and he’s owned nothing but R models. He said it was a game changer for the ‘road’ riding side of ADV. I can only imagine how good it would be on road as my 2021 890R is pretty damn good😎
I've had an R for 2 months now. No issues, love it. Even the R makes a great street bike. Great video and looking forward to the others.
Watching from Australia. 🇦🇺
Nice review I really prefer the cable clutch I think I get better feedback from it. I have a 2021 ktm 890 base model and I love it I agree about the base 890 being capable of most things. I don’t regret it.
I put 95K miles on my 2014 BMW 120GS and sold it to buy a 2021 KTM 890 Adventure R thinking at 71 100 pound less weight would be a good thing. Loved the handling and power (faster than GS) but found the high speed damping extremely harsh on sharp edge bumps and tried to have it addressed by a suspension shop a couple times and never got it to where I wanted it to be. Buffeting was bad and best I came up with was cheap eBay deflector that helped, but far from perfect. Mechanically the only issue I had in 10K miles was the OEM battery had a bad terminal and replaced under warranty. I found the bike is still nearly 500 pounds and lays flat making picking it up a pain! Ultimately I decided to sell it and bought another BMW GS. The GS just covers miles better, easier to pick up, but mainly at 71 I'm not going on any single tracks and GS will do fire roads all day long.
Then maybe its spring rate, not high speed damping. Its weird that revalve wouldn't solve it ;
My '18 africa takes high speed hits very nicely,.as long as they not too big ;
Rear is meh, but no bike have factory good shock :/
IDK what bmw puts in their dampers, they do really well with high speed damping. I know what you mean, it just soaks up the tiny road textures and undulations so well
Amazing review as always! Thanks for all you do.
Incredible review Bud! Nobody does as much research as you.Thank you.
Great information here. I think you just knocked me off the fence. Thanks for the shove and for putting this together. BTW, I've never subscribed to anyone's channel.... until now. Very informative piece.
Really appreciate your reviews, especially on the KTM as I just purchased one. Looking forward to the next episodes!
Hello Ian. Thank-you for all you detailed reviews. They were definitely helpful in my decision to purchase a KTM 890 Adventure.
Nice review! I went the "very tall" route with my 2022 890r and added WP Pro suspension. Still more than good enough for me on the highways. The whole 890 range is a fantastic design. Every time I ride my bike off road I am so impressed at what it can do. If I was buying a new mid size adventure bike right now it would still be the 890, even with all the great new bikes out there. The Desert X is gorgeous but the 890 is the best fit because of it's great overall design.
Bought the 890 Adventure yesterday. This content is so valuable, thank you! Came off the Harley Davidson Pan America and already appreciating the huge difference in weight distribution
Love the review and the information! I just bought one (2023 890 standard model) before your first video came out and I am loving it. First KTM. I agree the wind protection not too good. I added a clip on visor and it was a huge improvement. I also agreed with your assessment of the Tiger 900 Rally Pro...I just about bought one when I test rode it. Great machine, great windshield, comfortable...tall and top heavy.
I look forward to more videos on this machine!
A very comprehensive lesson on the KTM 890 - very helpful indeed !
You are so methodical and logical Ian, I love it.
First class review, as always..thanks Ian!
All I half to say is THIS WAS A GREAT VIDEO, THANK YOU. I'm going to buy one now😊
Been waiting for EP.2 so thanks for the comprehensive version. Can’t wait for the long term EP.3? version. Still a little apprehensive about KTM reliability. Especially after owning a T7 for two trouble free years. But the 890 ADV is on my short list so I’m being patient for now. Great review.
What a great vidéo with all the information needed, I honestly can't think of a better tester for adventure bike, now I feel confident to go after that 890! Thank you
Love your vids! One thing I’d like to see is showing the bikes on board storage spots available like under the seat and body panels. Your vids helped me pick a KTM 690 Enduro for my first bike!
Amazing review! Keep em coming!
Very much enjoyed the video, thank you. Just got one as my second bike after learning on small cc dual sport. Agree with your theory about this being a good bike for most riders- cost, tech and seat height were main considerations for me (I did try to swing my 30” inseam up on the “R” model and; at my level of experience that was a deal breaker, and am sure quite humorous to watch). Low center of gravity makes it quite easy to hold up on toes when I blow my lean angle coming to a stop. Your review is helping me learn more about the bike.
She does have a bit of a naughty side, quite fun!
I upgraded my 790 to this bike earlier this year. I still cannot believe how much better the 890 is in many aspects. I put 5000km on in 2 months and loving the bike.
Thank you for an amazing in depth review!
You did an awesome job!, attention to detail, please keep up the good work!
What a review! Congratulation! I just bought it, and I'm still trying to figure it out and get to know it, so far just great feeling on this bike! Hello from Italy! 🇮🇹
Thanks Ian! Looking forward to see what you do with the Windshield & Suspension! Cheers!
The most clear videos about this motorbike, loved it
Another comprehensive review Ian ❤. Excellent, as always
Outstanding effort on this review. Impressive evolution of the 890 platform with the base Adventure a great option for many.
Really great super detailed review' and very enjoyably succinct' your very and kindly professional! Thank you so much!🏁
I just wanna say, I have been watching your content for a while and I really enjoy it. You have your own way of doing things, you are really thorough and I would like to thank you for that! Like your video for instance about Honda AT DCT I mean nobody has made a video that would cover so many aspects of the DCT (good and bad). This KTM also is on my radar and your videos help understanding what the bike is about. Thank you! You are great!
I appreciate that!
Great job. Thanx a lot. Also thank you for a mirror advice.
Happy Memorial Day and thank you for always making my Mondays better. I commiserate with you over the lost footage. How frustrating! Currently riding a Hypermotard 950 SP (desert X motor) which has a fantastic engine and comfortable ergonomics. But... no cruise control, wind protection or large fuel tank.
I'm looking for something that combines fun on twisty roads, long-distance capability, upright seating, and the ability to handle short stents of maintained gravel roads. I would be riding pavement (90-95% of the time) so I don't know if I would be wasting its potential. The new 890 SMT also looks amazing.
Great work man, heck of a review
Great vid. Keep em coming
Great video Ian! Bought the same as you (also the orange), got it late April. Done in excess of 5.600-5.700 kilometers with it. Coming from a 1290 Super Adventure S and used to travel long distances across Europe I was, and still is, not quite sure if it will deliver. But I will say, this far, it's been a hoot. Very satisfied. No issues except a vibration noise that turned out to come from the top box mounting plate. I've had no software issues re favourites on mine. But the CC conked out one after being washed. Came back though. Going to report that.
For Scandinavian conditions, which is more gravel/dirt and less sand, I find the STRs tires work surprisingly well. Even deep gravel isn't a problem, the bike behaves very predictably. And steers phenomenally. Being 6"3 I put on the lowest KTM risers. It helped but not entirely sure it's adequate for me. Agree on the mirrors, they vibrate a lot although field of view is pretty decent. But I'll change those. Also got the Ergo seat (with heating), think it a lot better than stock.
Looking forward to your next video! Cheers :)
Epic video! Absolut love the review! After Way toooo much time on YT… i’m going for real to book a 2024!🎉😊❤
I keep hearing moto vloggers drop passing comments about reliability concerns on ktm's, but they never actually explain what they are. As someone who is looking at buying either 890 Adventure or a 690 Enduro, I would really like to know what these are. Can you please talk more about this in the next episode?
Fantastic video. Extremely professional and informing.
Overall Ian, a great review really appreciate the time and effort you put into the reviews. Ride safe, take care.
Excellent review! I’m riding the 390 Adventure now and feel the 890 may be my next bike. At 5’8”, I’m really liking the relatively low seat height.
Just pulled the trigger two days ago ;)
Excellent review. Thanks!
Hi Ian, love zur approach to bike-testing. Best in class. Could you make a mid-size adventure buyers guide for new bikes in 2023? (600-900cc)
I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see a long term Desert X video, some Australian channels have replaced the airfilters with aftermarket ones that last an amazingly long time in the bush, sort of removing the anxiety over access to the filter.
You had me at the suspension sticker... Love that!
As usual and as expected great review Ian...
I am currently in the market for an Adv bike and I was seriously considering 2023 KTM890 S model... I was happy to see you also got one and reviewing it. So I went to my local KTM dealership here in NorCal and sat on one and talked to owners of the dealership and other KTM owner friends...
In all honesty after doing all that my excitement level went really down and I got cold feet towards 890S... I have no idea what's the reputation of the KTM trail models or larger 1260 models but none of my KTM riding friends told me that they will buy it again if they knew what they were getting into.
They all love their bikes "when it's running" as they put it. But they complained of the relentless issues pushed them numerous times to the service for warranty repairs. Many minor and few major issues almost every KTM owner friend I talked to...
Then in my personal experience when I sit on a 890 Adventure S I realized all the buttons and the plastic on it looks like it was purchased from Radio Shack and installed... Quality is nowhere to be found in any of those material. I am sure you also noticed that since you're coming from GS/A platform like I do... When I sit on a 2023 GSA and look at my dash and control buttons, levers etc, everything looks and screams quality unlike what 890 offers from the riders point of view. I understand we get what we paid for but still OTD price of $16,000 is not a chump change for not to expect a little better quality workmanship from a company like KTM.... I hope your experience will be a positive one with your 890! Ride safe!
I agree with you about cruise control being such a key feature. At this point it just feels lazy on the part of the manufacturer when it is not available.
Lazy in this case = cheap
@@Angry-Lynx agreed
Truth!
The new Honda Transalp no cruise control.
Another interesting video thanks. I was knocked off my Africa Twin last weekend have a fractured arm. Other party admitted fault. Stay safe out there 🙏
Looks very comfortable for Maggie and full size panniers would not interfere with the pillion. Good to see Maggie doing reviews 😀👍. Like to know what she thinks of Ian being out on his bikes all the time. Also not another bike! although your lucky as it's your job. Like production values are going up with the smoke machine. 👍 Good stuff Ian your reviews are the best on the Net.🎉
Purchased my '23 KTM 890 Adventure base model over the R because it has fully adjustable suspension. It is lower tonthe ground. I can ride with the seat in high position on the highway, but as soon as I hit trails, I can quickly lower it! Love this feature!
The Rally mode is a game changer for all sorts of varying terrain from sand, rock, gravel, mud! I seem to be able to get through muddy areas easier than many of my other Adventure companions because the intelligent traction control does limit the slip and bites. Gravely hillsides, I can increase the slip number and prevent that rear tire from chewing itself, the bike feels solid with necessarily needing the friction zone of the clutch.
This bike is SO DAMN easy to lift from a drop, easier than my 300cc. It is light enough to maneuver or back up/push the way the rear handles are!
Without racks, dropping it has caused little damages, that tank does a great job.
I replaced the OEM skid/tank protector with AXP from Rottweiler.
Adding your Puig wind screen atop the OEM screen helps with highway winds
Nice video, thanks for making this. Sold my 2018 1290 Super Adventure R last fall and replaced it with a 2023 890 Adventure. I'll admit I miss the crazy power of the 1290 sometimes but since I ride with almost all of the rider aids off (just use the front ABS), this bike is very responsive. Other than the outright horsepower, everything else about the 890 is better. It's more agile, easier to move around the garage and I can actually pick it up alone. I generally don't do any mods unless I get something other than looks or sound out of it, so I wouldn't do the exhaust can change unless there was an increase in power or significant weight reduction. I'm considering one of the Rottweiler intake systems 'though. Also wouldn't mind a longer shift lever but haven't managed to find that yet.
Good and detailed review my dude!
WoW. OK.. looks like we have a game changer here!!!! Suzuki is listeng to their customers!
This bike reminds me of a tiger 800xc but with a little better suspension perhaps?
Cant wait for the full review!!
Nice one! I went with the Husqvarna Norden 901 Expedition
🏍️💨
Would love to see your review and breakdown of it.
Great in-depth review. Thanks Ian. Love your work.
Very interested to hear your overall comparison with the Toureg 660. A future vid perhaps? I live in Europe half the year. So no issues with service with either Apilrillia or KTM. Both bikes look the goods, though I am inclined to pick the lighelter bike . Thanks
I also would much appreciate a comparison between these models, since i‘m currently debating between these two exact models. However the Tuareg is currently winning, for today.
Excellent review dude ! It's one awesome bike !
Great in-depth review as always! My husband and I appreciate your reviews and enjoy your content Ian. In fact, if/when my husband decides he wants to down size from his H-D Pan America, this is the bike he is interested in, more so now after watching these 2 videos on the 890. He has the 2022 KTM 390 and I have the 2023 KTM 390.
Hey Jan! I like your reviews a lot! Looking forward to a review with ktm 1290 SA
Great review. Thank you.
Great video @Big Rock Moto! What pannier rack are you using? Looks like maybe a Tusk?
Thank you Maggy for your input.
Good work mate, I own a 2021 890r but I am keen to see how this goes as a lower bike may be the go cheers. I just paid for the tech pack up front and never looked back.
Your best review yet! Well done. Any chance of comparing the Ibex 800 against it?
Thanks for making great videos. I bough this bike last month and love it. What’s up with the Bluetooth and turn-by-turn navigation? Have you been able to get your hands on a Connectivity Unit for this bike?
I'm really looking forward to your videos on this bike because it's a finalist in the running for my next bike purchase. I'd consider my riding 85/15 at this point but I really like the ADV style seating position. The struggle for me is I'm 6' tall but have a 29" inseam and while I can tiptoe taller bikes it just isn't very comfortable. While they're completely different classes of bike, at this point I feel like I'm trying to decide between the HD PanAm (that adaptive ride height almost sells the bike by itself for me) or this base model 890 Adventure. Hope more videos are coming soon on your 890 Adventure!!
Loving the 890
Yessss ✌️ been waiting for this video
Great review! Speaking as someone for whom English is also a second language, I am impressed at how articulate Maggie is with English. Her accent is deceiving: she seems to have great command of the English language. I know how hard it is to get proficient on a second language, so my hat is off to her. Maggie's thoughts and insights regarding passenger accomodations were very interesting! Please keep up the excellent work! Best regards from Brasilia, Brazil.
You had me sold until you bottomed out the rear shock. Prefer the R model I think, but happy on my 690 for now. Great review thanks.
Great work, thank you very much for your work!
Could you already test the clip op windshield? Will you you the original KTM extension?
Ride safe!
Good test. Well done and thanks.
Also watching as I travel I’m from Australia 🇦🇺 the 890 will be my next bike for ADV in Aus
That Is one of your best or any reviews I’ve ever seen. I now want that bike.
Ian, thanks for another excellent review. I also have a '23 KTM 890 Adventure, which I really like more and more with each ride. I love tweaking settings in suspension, traction control, etc. So for your new Bridgestone tires, what air pressure do you use for dirt/rocks, sand or highway travel? Did you try different pressures on the stock Pirellis? Thanks in advance.
Really good review, I’m waiting for my new one to wing it’s way to the UK from Austria having ordered it a week a go with full tech pack, heated grips and bark busters. Should be a nice change after years with a GSA and it will meet its big brother in the garage a 950 Adventure I’ve had for years.
The husky expidition looks a great bike as well
Thanks for the thoughtful review. What brand seat cover are you using? Thank you.
Even when I am from the home county of KTM (Austria), I do appreciate your videos a lot ... thx and greetings from Vienna
Great review as always
I like your reviews. They are very detailed and precise
Always watching your videos here from the Philippines
Wonderful job as usual !
I was wondering about that window in the windscreen, does it still protect a large gps that obviously would sit just behind it. I’m worried that the rain would get into the charging mount and the tablet ports.
Appears to be a well thought out design. If I were looking for an adventure touring bike this would defiantly be on my radar.
Great review. Has been very helpful. I'm currently in the process of deciding on a more off-road-oriented companion to my R1200GS (just too heavy offroad). Shortlisted were the 890 Adv, 890 Adv R690 Enduro, and the Touareg 660. I'm tending, every time more, toward the 890 Adv, as the KTM felt more "comfortable and manageable" off-road than the Aprilia, and KTM has a phenomenal leasing scheme that effectively makes the 890 less expensive than the 660. Any thoughts and/or advice if you were to choose between the KTM and the Aprilia? Thanks.
Great review and hoping to pick up one soon! Can you tell me what gloves you are wearing in the short ride portion of the video? Thanks for the great content and time you spend reviewing motorcycles.
Loving my 28 890 adventure. 1700kms in just 7 under 2 weeks. It's been very comfortable and so far more than capable on and off road. I have found air down the stock tires a bit helped a ton with traction on gravel.
Looking forward to your comparison between the aprilia tuareg 660 and the base 890 adventure off road Ext.
I'm loving the fact that you invented time travel. Well PLAYED, Sir!🤣
Really good review!! Interesting bike. I wonder how reliable it is in a long term. Any chance for honda transalp 750 review ?:)
as usual, good stuff you bring up to us..plus maggie in her cameo
Loving the 890 R. Not sure it was the right choice for my riding but I love it. I do think I’d have benefited from the non R from a height perspective but I’m not getting rid of this bike for ages. It’s weight is carried so low that it feels so light. It only off camber stuff I’ll get in trouble and I have had a few close moments. I sold my r1200gsa for this and the 890r is incredible but I wish I’d seen this vid before pulling the trigger. On reflection, I would have most likely picked this one. Great bikes, great engines, ready to ride.
