- Hot on the heals of my last Sydney Central Station Update, is this new video that covers the opening of the remainder of Central Walk.
Yes, Central Walk is now fully open, and this includes the lifts and north escalators to platforms 16 to 21.
I'll take a ride on the new Central Walk escalators and lifts and point out some new things that were hard to spot when the hoardings were in place.
Its then on to the Metro Concourse, which has really opened up! Through the new temporary passageway, you'll see the ceiling that comprises of a canopy like structure around the east and west sides and a flat ceiling in the middle.
I'll show you new footage of the lifts and escalators to platforms 12 to 14, and also some closeups of the 2 lifts that will go down to the Sydney Metro platforms.
I'll finish with a ride in one of the Northern Concourse lifts that now serve the Metro Concourse, so providing step-free access.

I’m at central station (13th of April) and I saw that the door to the metro concourse worksite was open! I had a little bit of a look and it looked amazing! There were red tiles on the floor with some words in a circle pattern and the lifts and escalators looked working(ish). It was a wonderful insight!

Yes, they did look like that. It will look amazing when it opens. If it does open in a few months, will they just barricade the escalators and elevators to the platform?

Great stuff Paul.. I went for a wander around the central on Tuesday.
The entrance to central from Chalmers Street Surry Hills is progressing well also.
I spoke to a construction worker and he thinks the entrances may be open in May.

Yes it is! It opened quietly in 24 February! It will feature in my next update, which will be fairly soon.

I can't wait for a proper detailed video on the final finished product as I'm afraid I get lost on some of these videos even though I was a regular traveler to Central in the old days. I just find some of it quite confusing. I just wish it had been done 15 years ago, but then it may not have looked as grand as it does today!! Thank you so much for all your videos & for the new one you have done in Melbourne as part one was interesting as I have never actually walked about in Melbourne, only driven through once over 50 years ago & told, "Now you have been to Melbourne!" Brisbane & Adelaide - the same thing!! 😅 My ex was not into visiting cities!!

Thanks for the information. The problem I have with Sydney rail network is that while it's great to get people from the suburbs into the CBD, it's no good for people who want to go from suburb to suburb. For example, from Bankstown to Macquarie Centre, which can take up to one and a half hour because you have to detour into the CBD first.
You can't talk about decentralisation if the public transport infrastructure doesn't support it.
Hi Dave, yes that's a problem is most cities unfortunately. It's usually buses that connect the suburbs to each other, and they can vary immensely in terms of frequency and speed. Some of the T-Ways help plug the gap - for example Westmead to Rouse Hill. Extending Metro NW from Tallawong to St Marys would help too.
@@TransportVlog suburb buses are even worse. From Ermington to North Parramatta takes about 52 minutes on a bus while driving only takes 15 minutes. I wish we have a rail network like Tokyo.

Paul, I made a comment yesterday & youtube deleted it. Turns out it was deleted because I put a link in my comment & youtube doesn't like that. The link was to Office Works where they sell a selfie stick that you can put your phone on & get a shot from a higher angle to see over the construction fence. Thank you for the information on Central I'm heading to the airport in a few weeks so it's nice to know there is an extra elevator mid-platform. Last time there I has to wait in a queue to get my bags down to the concourse to transfer over to the airport line.

I was using a selfie stick at the time, and I probably could have got a better view, but there were lots of construction workers on the other side that might not appreciate me looking into their world! Yes the new elevators will really help with interchanges to the airport line.

Slightly off track, I am hoping the new Government will get Tallawong joined up with St Marys after the new Metro from St Marys to the Airport is completed. Saw someone did an update on Wiley Park so I need to get over to the Bankstown line again, soon.
Hi Geoff, glad you enjoyed it! Still 2024 for metro opening between Chatswood and Sydenham (including Central Station). Completion of Bankstown line conversion may be early 2026 now. Not much has changed on the Bankstown Line since my last video. A couple of plaza's have opened up, but still no new lifts in service. Yes I think Tallawong to St Marys is one of the more important ones to build next.

I'll probably do another one in a couple of months. I've been keeping an eye on Waterloo Station. Most of the visible work is for the over-station development, so not that interesting from a transport point of view as yet. Oh Ok so I guess after all a video update on the Sydney Metro Waterloo Station wouldn't be interesting to show when the wall is covered Up. The reason I ask when you were going to do a another video on the Bankstown Line was because you did a Sydney Metro update video on the Bankstown Line in October last year in 2022 and I was curious to know what has changed to the line since October last year.

It's planned to eventually form an east-west link from Surry Hills to Haymarket (down from the coach terminal) as part of the long-term Central Station redevelopment, but it's still in the early days of planning for that

Thanks Ju, the Burrows Avenue entrance is now open at Sydenham Station. Yes Redfern is looking good. Still lots of work to do at the Little Eveleigh Street end, so it will be interesting to see if it opens in stages.
Does anyone know what happened to the book shop that used to be in the Henry Deane Plaza ? did it move elsewhere?
I used to love all the shops in the vicinity, but when I visited a few months ago I was shocked to see that not only had the bookshop gone, but all the shops in the vacinity were also closed down including the newsagent, and the various eatery places, there used to be a good Thai food place that I always visited whenever I needed to go to the city, wonder if they moved elsewhere or just shut down for good.
bookshop (basement books) has closed permanently. I do miss it alot as well. Now its the construction office for the Atlassian tower.
@@Arocketdog such a shame, all the shops I loved to visit are now gone, borders, cd shops, food outlets, comic shop in Liverpool street, nothing good is replacing them,

At 4:22 you suggest remembering to turn around in the lift, but I presume the entire purpose of having doors on opposite sides of the lift is so that you *don't* need to turn around, which is great for people with prams, luggage or for wheelchair users. Otherwise there was no point - they could easily have just had doors on one side at this location. I'm guessing the problem is that you instinctively turned around when you got in the lift when you didn't need to. :)
Yes that will be funny. People used to the lifts won’t turn around and the others will turn around creating utter confusion and social awkwardness on how to avoid facing each other
Yes that's right! I'm so used to turning around in lifts, often to press the buttons and watch the doors close. But you're right. You don't have too! And yes, perfect for wheelchair users and people with prams, luggage, even bicycles. Perhaps we need "Don't Turn Around" by Ace of Base / Aswad / Bonnie Tyler as the lift music to help people to remember that they don't need to!

Hi Andrew, yes as Abiram said, there will be 42 new escalators and I covered the locations of all of these in my August update - link here. ua-cam.com/video/g3lOMCqs6xA/v-deo.html. I also cover in this video, the locations of the existing 6 escalators, although now I realise that I missed the 2 at Exit 6 (Chalmers and Devonshire Street corner), so that means that Central Station will have 50 escalators in total.

Are there any plans to run it through to the country and interstate platforms and even further to the street after that? All the new escalators and lifts there look great. Incidentally, you mentioned that one area included on your previous video had closed, which I think was the former southern entrance with a stairway to various platforms. Will that be opened again? Hi Rob, thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. Central Walk is below platforms 16 to 23. It will continue east to the new Chalmers Street entrance when that opens later this year. Yes, there is a plan to extend it west to cover the country and interstate platforms, but I reckon that will be a few years away. Yes that was the southern tunnel, and that will reopen probably when the metro concourse is finished which is likely to be within 2 months.
@@TransportVlog With the length of Central Walk, I am surprised that they haven't considered installing a moving footpath there. There used to be an underground moving footpath near Hyde Park, though I am not sure if it is still in operation or not these days. I last used it during the 1970's.
Paul great video I wouldn’t say that central walk is completely open the chalmers street entrance is not open as yet and the concourse area for the metro lifts and escalators is still closed
Good point Paul, yes technically the east area towards the Chalmers Street escalators and lifts is also part of Central Walk. The metro concourse is not part of Central Walk, although it will integrate almost seamlessly into it when it’s complete.
I was under the impression that the metro concourse was part of central walk but thanks for pointing out it’s a separate part of the project still it’s a very impressive project

Hi Brian, yes there is a longer term plan to extend Central Work to cover platforms 1 to 11. I don’t think it’s been approved as yet.
Nice video! Central Walk is great, but it really bothers me that the departure displays are tilted upwards. It's inconvenient to read and especially horrible from accessibility standpoint. Hopefully they can fix that somehow.

I went there yesterday, what I found bizarre is that the concourse does not have a main electronic board that lists all the upcoming trains! what happens if you're new to sydney? Are you required to go all the way up to the top level at Central to find all the upcoming trains?
It probably depends which entrance you use. The Eddy Avenue entrance has displays for all train lines on the left (towards platforms 16 to 23). The new Chalmers Street entrance will also have a set of displays for all trains, and existing southern entrance (also on Chalmers Street) has displays for all trains.

4:05 That inspires confidence, not! I was already twitchy about the glass floors at the lift entrances/exits from seeing them on a previous video.
I assume they tested them with heavy weights, but I guess there are the existing lifts, if you don't feel comfortable walking on this glass.
the central walk area, is it combining 2 separate tunnels into one wide tunnel?
Central Walk is one large tunnel (19 metres wide). It opened in sections, but was excavated as one large tunnel right from the start.
@@TransportVlog end of April 23 I finally got to use this new section in person. Catching a train to the airport station with luggage, I appreciated the lifts transferring from platform 18 to 23. I transferred from metro at Chatswood to city, at 8:00am the trains were packed despite having a city train every 5 minutes or so.
still, it's leaking rain water from the roof, despite being a very expensive renewal.
How long will it take for them to finally fix the leaking in housing in Australia?
Yes I saw some wet patches! Hopefully they can fix that easily.

You mean the K Sets. Probably within 2 years. They are being replaced indirectly by the Oscar H sets, when the Mariyung trains take over services on the Newcastle, Blue Mountains and Wollongong lines.
The T3 Bankstown Line From Sydeham To Bankstown Is Excepted To Close On The 2nd or 3rd of July 2023 for Sydney Metro Convertion. Can you make a Video of The Farwell Bankstown Line From Sydeham To Bankstown On The 1st 2nd or 3rd of July 2023. After its Closed. Buses Will Replaced Trains From Sydneham To Birrong. So T3 Will Go From Lidcombe To Liverpool.

Hi Nick, the first part of Central Walk that opened last November, seems to have avoided any graffiti so far, so hopefully that will continue to be the case.
What about walk through to main station platforms 11 to 2
Hi Anthony, from the Northern Concourse lifts, you would keep walking left to access all the terminating platforms. There are 4 escalators as well, and I’ve covered those in previous updates. Once the metro concourse is finished, there will also be access via the southern tunnel, but that’s stairs only. Hope this makes sense.

Hi Gabriel, sometime in 2024, and Chatswood to Sydenham is likely to open before the Bankstown line.
So money went into style and the only function is a few lifts?
The money went towards 4 new lifts and 15 escalators, but more importantly much more space, which means that larger numbers of people can use Central Station, and interchange more quickly with less congestion. So although its pleasing to the eye, its very functional as well.
4:21 actually, you don’t have to turn around. You walk in, and walk out facing the same direction.
