In 2000, Mike Wallace asked Zemin if he admired the courage of the pro-democracy students at Tiananmen.

Among all the Chinese leaders, Mr. Jiang is the most charismatic one: he was well-trained in science and technology, multilingual, humorous, and was not afraid to show some temper in public. We had watched him arguing with reporters, playing Hawaiian guitar in governor’s party, and laughing with leaders from other countries. He led to China through a difficult time and helped to open the country to the western world. There are of course pros and cons of his work, but overall I think he did a great job! R.I.P. Mr Jiang!
Yes. He was a man on the ground. He ran his Country peacefully and worked with a lot of foreign countries that came to invest. I testify this as I worked in PRC for more than 5 years. Apart from being a President he was seen visiting all manufacturing plants to ensure and see the progress. May God bless him.
Indeed, it was not easy to lead China at that time.
Reform and opening up was Deng Xiaoping's policy. Of course, it is a good thing that Jiang Zemin abided by the agreement with Deng Xiaoping. Generally speaking, I think he has done a better job in banning the military from doing business and peacefully handing over power to Hu Jintao. Maintained the reform and opening up, and he did not hunt down the participants after the Tiananmen incident. Now he is dead, may he rest in peace.

This is an interview that (1) would never happen today and (2) is so revelatory and informative of the basis of US-China relations.
Jiang made total sense with his short and concise answers. China has grown much under him and His words are still ringing true even now!

Impressed with Jiang's command of English. No Western leader except for one Australian Prime Minister could understand Mandarin.
Jiang also studied American history, Abraham Lincoln, American politics and society. Few American leaders have spent as much time and effort in understanding China, its culture, its people.
That sums up the gulf of misunderstanding between USA and China.
Actually Jiang can speak eight foreign languages, includes English,Russian,French,Japanese,Spanish,German,Romana(he loves Romania literature) and Urdu.
Besides, he was an electrical engineer before and loves science and technology during his lifetime, he learned some of these languages to read tech thesis.
Went through the whole interview, I laughed and I cried. Just realized what a wise man JZM was only by the time I grown up, and he passed away. R.I.P

This video cuts a lot of the content of the interview that Jiang defends himself in a good way.
For example for the Tiananmen square event, Jiang claims that one of the reason that the students dare to stand in front of the tank, is that he believes the army will not hurt him. This is a basis trust that the student has, regardless of his attitudes towards the existing corruption of the government at the 90s.
The trust is something that I can relate to and agree with.
Hopefully 60 Minutes will release the uncut full footage on this YT channel in its original edition. While we mourn the loss of a legendary leader, the world has missed journalists like Mike Wallace. This mesmerizing conversation would not have been possible without the common ground of undistorted facts and open minds for mutual understanding.

Damn, those were great responses from Jiang. Could you imagine current authoritarians being asked those questions likes "are you a dictator" or wagging fingers at them. Jiang was confident enough to laugh along and not end the interview the second a confrontational question was asked which I think is amazing.

Did you think Mike conducted himself in a respected manner? If a leader of a country offers you an olive branch by talking about mutual understanding and friendship, is the appropriate response to cross you arms and say "so you admire america"?
Imagine being given the opportunity to interview the leader of another country, and spending it spewing the exact rhetoric of your own country back at them (includingfinger pointing and disdainful tone), without asking creative and interesting questions that contribute to a more wholistic perspective of why things are the way they are in different geographies.

he was great at answering the tough questions without undermining his works or his country. even if you don't like china under his rule or he himself, you can't deny that he really did promote both himself and his country really well and my respect and condolences to him.
If you learnt mandarin, you'd be able to find out how different China really is. It's not what the western media paints it at all. At the least, visit the country and see for yourself.
As a Chinese, I have to say that even today, we are still influenced by the legacy and the momentum that President Jiang and his leadership team built 30 years ago. I enjoy watching this tough interview: some real conversation. Unfortunately Chinese leaders today may not want to face this kind of tough questions…
As a Chinese too, i dont think its possible, US always hostile towards any country that are not aligned with their view. So its "freedom" unless its different from them, something like that. They kept on bringing human right issue in China, current and past even though other country dont attack their black slavery culture in the past as a propaganda against them and their current "democratic" riot (burning, looting and mass shooting). As far as i concern, their people dont value human right as much (of course not from their word, but more of their action); its just hypocritical. but its understandable, its easier to attack other than introspect to further one's interest.
By no means i approve dictatorship but for US hostility, the ends doesnt justify the means. But hey, if you strip their freedom, democracy and human rights facade, in the end its just about maintaining their dominance, whether its military or economy. And they cant influence dictatorship just like they can influence other democratic election and in return get favourable deal after their backed candidate won. So yeah, keep pretending to be narcissistic "hero" and "justice" country while keep invading and attacking other countries.

No matter his faults in policy, he was one of the last Chinese leaders brave enough to accept a western media interview, especially at a time when sino-us relations were so tense. He was also the first CCP leader to step down after his legal term and facilitate a peaceful transfer of power at the highest level of leadership. Often only when looking back do we see how good we had things in China for those decades of Jiang and Hu

Jiang was leading China for a crucial period that laid the foundation for what China had become today, a period of growth and advancement by magnitude none of any American presidents in history could have done. The level of confidence and condescending attitude Wallace had was, let me be polite here, amazing. He must be thinking that it’s just another dictator without having the slightest idea what a historical figure he was talking to.
The US/Uk/Europe are very myopic and near-sighted to see big pictures. Their congregated views are only to see how much benefit that I could have at this very moment. Never worry about 5 minutes down the road. Dealing with the West is like dealing with a sub-human, needed to be done accordingly.

I don’t know a lot about Chinese politicians but Jiang Zemin was extremely well composed, despite the numerous attempts to break his composure. The reporter was polite but forcefully combative in his questioning. Clearly, the intent of the two parties were not in-line but I respect and appreciated that Jiang wanted to extend an olive branch and was impressed that he able to stick to his goal.

Wow! Wonderful interview. Mike Wallace asked the very tough and difficult questions that would have been on the minds of the American people. Like boxers in a ring, President Jiang Zemen handled each of those jabs, i.e. questions like a champ. He was a consummate statesman. Great job by both.

Jiang Zemin was probably the most characteristic leader of China so far. He had a very long journey and he was a very good diplomatic leader with the rest of the world. Rest In Peace Jiang.

As an engineer, Jiang had done well in this interview. Not as eloquent or smooth as lawyers, actors, comedians or TV stars but good enough to deliver his messages across to the world. The American interviewer should not wag his finger at the head of any nation though. The culture differences between the west and east are simply too big. Asians will not wag their finger at others.

Watching this video, I can't shake off how time has flown. Both Jiang and Wallace are no longer with us. Maybe they're having a tipple and laughing over their respective performances in this interview and wondering: "Boy, we sure took life seriously. And what for? Look at us then. And look where we are now? Damn!" LOL.

Hopefully, the uncut version of this interview can be released, and this may be the first time a Chinese leader would like to speak with a western journalist without constraints after 1949. We miss the time when China and US are patterns and hope the Chinese leaders can be more open mind, willing to share, and embrace democracy and freedom. We are mourning not only to Present Jiang Zemin but also the time when we saw hope and light.

I really like his tie and suite, very elegant. Also he was a great (and popular worldwide) leader for China back in the days.
I watch this interaction between them with amazement because this kind of humour and laughing in an interview by the president of China is unthinkable today. Especially to an american interviewer. Miss the old times before smart devices were everywhere, you see the clips of Chinese streets and no cameras and no phones in everybody's hand.
He stabilized the 1989 protests in Shanghai without using force, while Beijing(and multiple other major city) has to use military. This one action set him apart from others in Deng Xiaoping's eyes and he was therefore appointed as the leader. Of course, he was not elected, and he is not a benevolent dictator like LKW, either. Yet he is still a legend because he didn't lead a economy controlled by insufficient bureaucrats into a downward spiral.
This was from more than 20 years ago and yet little has changed in the America’s biased narrative about China in the mainstream media. Just like the American view of China, income of the bottom 50% of Americans have remained the same while China has dramatically improved the livelihood of its people since then.
President Jiang zemin passed this exam excellently.

Wallace's posture is very rude. I seriously doubt that he'd do the same thing to another head of state. President Jiang will be sorely missed by a lot of people in China.
He wouldn't do that to Putin. Not because Putin is stronger than Jiang. But because Putin is more unpredictable. I have a different take of why Wallace took on a 'ruder' posture towards Jiang. I read it as a more casual posture, and it's because Wallace felt more comfortable, more affable even, towards Jiang. Wallace knew Jiang was a rational person. May Jiang rest in peace.

Kudos to the leader of over a billion people sitting and answering “biased” questions from Mike Wallace. I have used the term “biased” as in from their perspective. It’s very impressive especially when you consider that this was about 22 years ago!
The two great people have both passed away. I admire Wallace very much for his sharpness, bravery, and wisdom as a reporter. Jiang Zemin also spoke highly of Wallace when he was angry with Hong Kong reporter.
But just for this interview, Wallace showed typical arrogance and prejudice. Of course, it is normal for two completely different countries and cultures to not understand each other, which is also the significance of such an interview.

If you learn more you will find the first modern leader of China Chairman Mao is an outstanding Poet in modern history. But quite strangely he don't even know how to shoot with a gun all his life. But in his leadership China has her own Nuclear weapons, guided missiles and Satellites. Chinese people say he made China stand up.
Next leader Deng xiaoping has studied in French when he was young. And when he took power he paved the path for China to open up and reform, so China has become the second biggest economy in the world from scratch. Chinese people said he made China rich.
And for the current and next Presidents. Chinese people hope he can make China become strong in every aspect.

Wallace seems to forget that the founding fathers actually opposed political parties for the very reasons Jiang outlined.
Exactly. As much as I inevitably lean more toward the interviewer's agenda, a lot of his actual questions were one-dimensional interpretations of an idealized US reality, or unanswerable rebukes.
