- In this Tales From The Treehouse episode, I'm recalling that amazing day when Lewis won his 1st F1 World Championship. What was it like inside that garage? What was the post race party like? And just how loud can Nicole Scherzinger scream? Hope you enjoy it as much as I did?

If you wrote a movie about 2008 and it ended how it did in real life, people would have complained about it being unrealistic.
You literally couldn’t have written that ending
Would make a pretty cool movie, wouldn't it?
@@ytastayre Movie won't be able to match the suspense I think.
the critics would call it deus ex machina
Glock actually gained a position with his gamble to stay out on dry tyres. He was behind Kovallainen before the rain came down and finished ahead of him by the chequered flag.
The gamble clearly worked.
Watched it live with my late dad going crazy that Lewis won the title.
He was a huge Lewis fan and we never missed a race together.
Even to this day, I get goosebumps when I watch this lap.
Me too
Me too. Unbelievable 👁👁
I’ll always remember this moment, I’d been forced to go out for a meal with my ex wife’s friends, missed most of the race but was stood by the bar with two laps to go. When Hamilton passed Glock I literally threw most of my freshly bought pint all over a group of strangers stood next to me. They were very understanding
😊
This was the first F1 race I ever watched. I was 10 years old at the time and despite having zero knowledge on the sport, I became outrageously invested in Lewis Hamilton's title fight. I remember those moments when Vettel overtook. I remember throwing things at my tiny CRT television, desperately trying to change the result. I remember the sheer desperation Hamilton had trying to get past Vettel on that last lap, it's still the most frustrating thing I have ever watched on TV. I really wasn't prepared for such a huge swing of emotion, but when Hamilton passed Glock at the final corner, all I can remember was screaming at the top of my voice. In the space of just 2 hours, I became obsessed with Formula 1 and of course Lewis Hamilton.
Man i read this comment and all my emotions came flooding back. The despair, knowing there was nothing you could do, I'm screaming at the TV, mom is sad, I'm sad. And then those famous words "is that glock".. Honestly, unbelievable stuff, this is up there In my top two sporting moments ever.
My overriding memory of this is watching the race with my Dad. My Dad went upstairs with 2 Laps to go and that's it. As Lewis got past Glock I shouted back up saying he was 5, he came running back down as he crossed the line. We nearly cheered the house down.
👍😊
Lewis Hamilton is the embodiment of #nevergiveup
I remember going straight to my room after Seb overtook Lewis & literally burying my head under a pillow. The thought of him losing the championship 2 years in a row right at the end & by such tiny margins was too much to bear. I was already imagining the headlines labeling Lewis a serial choke artist... but then I heard my brother yelling & the world was good again. Lol!
@@alikaty2k7 lol 🙂
Like millions that day, I was watching the race on tele live: you couldn't write a better hollywood film story! Youre so lucky Marc, to have been a mech for McLaren that day, chapeau to you and the whole team.
I am lucky😊
I still get goosebumps watching back that moment
🤮
“IS THAT GLOCK???!!!!”
It is still one of the greatest sporting moment that I have seen live on television.
I wasn’t around to see senna lauda etc. But I’m glad I saw this.
It's very rare you live through an edge of the seat moment watching TV but I was honestly nearly falling off my seat and going through so many emotions in those last few laps
That was what Spa 2008 did for me - awesome race between Lewis and Kimi, just ruined by the FIA afterwards.
Fantastic! I was a Lewis/Mclaren fan in 2008 and I'll never forget Brundel's call. It was electrifying, but the celebration was tempered by the brutal turn of events for Massa and Ferrari.
How great would it be to see Lewis sit down with you and some of the other people that played a part and relive this.
Omg I was thinking this, tales from the three house - 2008 revisited. Just have different McLaren members on talking about what they remembered, etc. Wow
The first time I watched it as a 8 year old boy, it was a funny situation because I didn't get a clearer picture as to who became world champion but by the time Hamilton crossed the line to finish fifth, my sister or mother confirmed to me that Hamilton was champion.
As soon as I watched it again and again, it made me realise that it's not often you have dramatic moments in world motor sport like this and 2008 Brazil GP was definitely the obvious example that you cannot script by what was an incredible ending to one of the most craziest finishes in the history of modern F1 and Grand Prix Motor Racing, and Lewis in a non-white community did just that.
As Lewis continues to break racial barriers, There's no doubt who my hero is and that is him. He's not just continuing not to inspire not just people in Britain but all over the world by persisting insurmountable success with the Mercedes-Benz team and express himself as a humble influential figure outside of it, which led me not only to follow formula one more regularly, but the history of the sport and various motor sport categories as well. Love him or loathe him, he will always continue to shine a bright light until the day he stops and he will keep on doing just that.
I'm so blessed and glad have such a hero in my life and continuing to obliterate the competition this very day by taking one step at a time to realise my ambition to get into the sport that I'm just as passionate and enthusiastic as you are and thank God every day to have such a role model like him.
Thank you for sharing this story Elvis, it really makes me feel nostalgic looking through that moment.
Thanks for taking the time to write such a heart felt comment.👍
Marc as an Italian who cried that day ( and thought for years Glock had let Hamilton by) I really appreciate hearing your side of the story and gives me goosebumps also. Please keep up the awesome content ;)
But you don't think that now right?
It bring tears to my eye reliving this moment, literally
#Me Too lol😎
This story reminds me of a similarly dramatic title fight in 1976 when James Hunt and Niki Lauda went into the final race in Japan with the championship on the line. (I was at Watkins Glen two weeks earlier to see Hunt pull within three points of Lauda with a win.) Conditions were extremely wet, some thought dangerous, and several drivers, including Lauda, withdrew after a few laps. With Lauda out, Hunt only had to finish fourth to clinch the championship. He led early, but the track later dried and most drivers had to pit for new tires as their wets degraded too much. Hunt held off, but when he finally pitted for tires, he dropped to fifth. He set off after Depailler, Jones and Regazzoni. On lap 71, Hunt passed Jones and Regazzoni and finished third to win the championship, but he didn't even realize it until he got back to the pits. Mario Andretti won the race by more than a lap. He was the only driver to complete all 73 laps. Depailler, Hunt, Jones and Regazzoni completed 72 laps and finished in that order for the top five. In addition to the dramatic conclusion and late lap pass, other parallels with 2008 are in both cases a McLaren driver won the championship and in both years McLaren was beaten by Ferrari for the constructors. (Rush did a pretty good job with this story, but I remember it.)
Another great story.👍
I remember watching this event live and the commentator shouting about the overtake of Glock. What emotion. Thanks for the memory. Being a participant must have been wonderful.
It was amazing😊
A really great insight into the garage! That was just as I was getting into F1, and has stuck in the memory since. And let's not forget Felipe Massa - he was so dignified in his response. That moment alone made him a true gentleman!
👍
That is an incredible win and I also think it is, if not the best, at least one of the best moment in F1 history. Seeing the images on TV was very emotional at home and I also remember slipping down on the couch when I Lewis go off and lose his 5th place. I have goose bumps hearing you how it felt in the garage, how the emotional roller coaster culminated with that explosion of joy and pride. It shows how human you are when you had a thought about the Ferrari team and how devastated they must have felt. Ferrari did everything they had to do to win the championship and so did McLaren. Nobody could have ever imagined that a decision made earlier by another team and weather would make the final decision on who would win. I have to say Marc that I am happy that such a nice guy like you was there to live every second of it.
😊
You're one hell of a storyteller, Marc, you gave me goose bumps just listening to you
There was an interview on radio 5 with Ron Dennis two or three years ago. He said they planned to take 5th on the final lap - he sounded insane. He also said McLaren would be the next non-mercedes champions.
I’m with you on the goosebumps Elvis. I’d left Bridgestone at the end of ‘05 and had watched the subsequent seasons lap for lap at home in Norwich. What a mega moment.
Marc, I absolutely love your delivery and how you told this story in particular (and also the one about Kimi's last race). Great stuff!
👍
Still, and forever will be the single best sporting moment in my life, as a hardcore Lewis and McLaren fan, it was just an absolute perfect moment of drama!
That race was truly epic and I'll also never forget it! I kinda wanted Massa to win the WDC though.
the feeling in that second, you dont need to explain... i never screamed at the tv before that moment. goosebumps!!
As a ten-year-old whose first F1 season was 2008, I couldn't have been more glad that my parents got Sky Sports for the final two races, and Brazil could not have possibly been more worth it. I was a Lewis fan, still am, and "is that Glock?!" will always be my favourite sporting moment of all time.
I'm sure F1 wasn't on sky sports at that time. It was on ITV, also it was my 2nd F1 season
@@joshsmith7521 I live in New Zealand, we don't have ITV haha
Ive been following you for quite a while Marc but this is the first time I’ve ever wrote anything (sorry!) but I’ve just got to say i bought your book and WOW! It’s a must read and to be honest I couldn’t put it down - I love your knowledge, your writing style and the insight...Thank you so much you’re making is lockdown bearable with these vids
Thank you, I really appreciate it.
lazy day in the Bloomfield household today, sat here with my beans and sausage on toast as burrito night was delayed a day, but lightened up with this video to watch as I eat the "F O O D" in front of me haha. Thanks Marc love this new series.
"Is that Glock" followed by the "YESSSSSS!" as Hamilton crossed the line has to be up there with "and Solskjaer has won it" for me as one of the best commentary moments in my lifetime... Can still picture my elation every time I hear it!
👍
Nice Marc good to hear your memories of it. I often rewatch that race and still get goosebumps, as I did listening to you reliving it.
The mentality of F1 at the time is perfectly displayed during this race.
The focus was on the actors, not the action.
One of my first real memories of F1, hearing your story and the disbelief that you were World Champions brings such a big smile to my face. It's one of those races even for me that comes into my mind several times a year. Thinking about how incredible that race was and where I was when I was watching too. Surely it has to be one of the most iconic sporting events in modern history and what a pleasure it must have been to be apart!
I don't think it couldn't have happened to a better person.
Love the video as always Elvis, look forward to the livestreams next week!
It's a shame Lewis sometimes doesn't get the recognition he deserves. Starting f1 at 22, in mclaren no less, against Fernando. Leads the championship for the majority of the season, only to lose it by 1 point in brazil. One year later, he's in the exact same position. Must've been soul crushing especially for someone so young,
Having a fast car from the get go, while a blessing, comes with immense pressures. We've seen the likes of Gasly and Kyvat crumble under inferior circumstances. Those that win championships are of a whole different breed. The pressure to perform at the sharp end, shouldn't be underestimated.
Bahamuttiamat He’s lucky, that’s all and gets preferential treatment in all teams he drove for.
I do remember this race. My sister and I were watching. Couldn’t keep still. I kept walking in and out of the room with the ‘I can’t watch this’ vibe. When Hamilton was in sixth, we were so deflated, but when the words ‘Is that Glock’ were yelled, we were jumping up and down, screaming. One of the best moments of F1 for me, with Damon Hills world championship win second. 😍🤩
I've always loved Vettel as a driver, like Lewis his potential was obvious from the moment he got to F1. But I have never hated him more than on that moment when he passed Lewis in that race, lol. Great story Mark. I've really heard nothing that I already knew from watching this moment over and over again, but it was still great to hear from your point of view and to hear the emotion in your voice. Thanks for sharing, I'm looking forward to the next episode ;)
and Abu Dhabi '16 when he didn't try to overtake Rosberg. Lewis is a very kind person😇
Talk about a nerves,.. I would of been freaking out!! I watched that race the other day it was unbelief.. what a amazing nerve wracking situation!! Great great video.. I need to get your book I'm a fabricator and mechanic myself.. I couldn't imagine
Great history Marc, felt all that emotion too! Thanks for sharing that wonderful moment!
After this I went and re watched the last 7 laps of this race and it is just as intense and gripping as it was then even now knowing the result. Love ya videos and indeed the content. Keep em coming 😀
👍
Gave me goosebumps. Hope Lewis gets #7
Love it, gave me goose bumps all over again, great vid as usual Marc, keeping us entertained during the pandemic.
15:29 Really nice of you to feel sorry for the Ferrari guys who were distraught after Massa lost the World Title. However, Ferrari brought this on themselves after they successfully petitioned the FIA to deduct 25 seconds from Lewis Hamilton time in the 2008 Belgian GP, a decision that Niki Lauda called "the worst judgement in the history of F1". Hence, the "distraught feelings" that the Ferrari mechanics were feeling were basically not undeserved as they were the karma that Ferrari got for corrupting the sport. I hope your friends felt sorry for you after your team was denied a very impressive and deserved victory in the 2008 Belgian GP that was robbed from you.
Absolutely spot on
As a Lewis fan it was amazing moment after the previous years fiasco with Fernando ,but felt so sorry for a very likable and nice guy Felipe Massa on his home track
I remember watching and knowing that a friend of mine was working on the live edit team for UK tv. When it all happened I could not believe it having lived through the disappointment the year before. I remember thinking about my mate Ben and later finding out about the epic party that went on afterwards. What a race!
Watching from here in the U.S it was fantastic to see after coming so close in 2007. Wow all what was going on behind the scenes to get that first one!
Brilliant story telling there Marc, an absolute emotional roller coaster ! Thanks so much, I really needed something like this today. Very best to you.
👍
I still get the intense feelings of that evening.
I was watching the basic timing screen on F1.com and it was a crazy evening. The TV picture was 7 seconds behind the timing page.
As someone who wanted Massa to win, I was screaming Glock fell off the timing page on Sector 2, doing a mid 40 plus second sector.
Then throwing the ruler over the room in anger.
It’s the most intense I’ve ever been for a F1 race. The gold standard of F1 drama.
A rollercoaster of emotions especially what happened in 2007. One of the best F1 races ever. Great treehouse stories. Looking forward to more #AskElvis in the treehouse 👍
Marc, I've always being a McLaren fan, as a Brazilian who watched Senna win his championships with them. That year I was on the other spectrum from you, as we were hoping to get another Brazilian world champion after sooo many years. It was heartbreaking. Unfortunately, looks like we will still be without a champion for a very long time. It's been great following your videos! Cheers!
I can only imagine how heartbreaking it must've been.
Well done Marc. Loved your infectious rendering of that historic moment in F1 history
Remember watching it live on TV, still the most exciting sporting event I've ever seen and probably will see.
I was meant to be editing a video and this was such a good video I ended up just watching the whole thing instead. Thanks for this.
👍
Well recounted. It must've been such an amazing few minutes to experience from the inside.
It was!
Loved the energy and enthusiasm with which you relived that epic 2008 ending race. I was hoping the underdog, Massa could win the championship, so was a bit flat after the race. But it was a classic race, so thanks for bringing back the memories. 👍
It was like we were all there. Thank you. That was really great
The biggest thing I remember was certain people [who were devastated that Massa failed to win the Championship] accusing Glock of deliberately slowing and letting Lewis get past.
Morons..
Glock finished 10th eventually so he was definitely in trouble.
People think the moon landing was a hoax why is it a surprise they believe a motor race might have been fixed?
Look at the comments from the onboard video of Glock’s last lap that the F1 channel published. So many people realising that they were mistaken in their accusations towards Glock.
dB glad they did that. Shut a lot of people up.
The man received death threats. Ironically, he didn't even like lewis. Tifosi being tifosi, I guess.
Thanks again Marc for a great read. I read your book a couple year's ago, so good to hear your snippets again from the author himself and look forward to your next book.
A good season 2008. Haha the only downside? The cars were not the best looking they've ever been...
Good Job describing those last few seconds of the race Marc We felt it. Wow, I bet that was Crazy in the garage!
Amazing story! Still remember that day - the hope, disappointment then elation when Lewis won! Made up for 2007. And Nicole, screaming her heart out in that red dress! Thank you!
Thanks Marc! We're really enjoying the Treehouse series. :-)
Jen
I always thought, this book should have become a movie!!
That is what makes sports so great the highs and the lows. I remember sitting on my couch and I was an emotional wreck
It was a rollercoaster of a afternoon
Wow! I was in tears of sadness and very quickly complete disbelief during that final lap! Like you said, I really felt it for Massa and his dad. Massa is such a gent and it’s still kinda sad that he never got that win! But........... GO LH44!!!!
I remember that race and still have it in my library.Been watching F1for 45 years.I miss the old screaming engines.
Awesome storytelling. Wonderful reminiscing .Nice one and Thank You.
Loved hearing the emotions in your voice. Great story.
I think I saw you on the post match celebrations of 2005 Japan. You should do a video on that.
I will!
What a fantastic experience for you and a brilliant story for us.👍
Lewis is one of the greatest ever as an F1 pilot. Having said that I would have liked to see Massa win being there in Brazil and all.
Hi Marc... brilliant read, I remember standing in my living room willing lewis on through the last 10 laps then being slumped on the sofa on the last lap till those 3 words , I about hit the roof ! . And really good to hear that in the world of the "celebrity fan" that Nicole was a fan first then a celebrity 👍
I’m really enjoying these treehouse talks!!! Keep them going if you would.
What a great story Marc, I felt like I was in the garage with you guys ..
Mate you said it - goosebumps. I remember it crystal - when Vettel passed Lewis in the last laps I was shouting at the TV. My wife was back in Brasil with her mum, also shouting at the TV, to the confusion of her mum ( why are you cheering for the gringo?!), and then it came good. What a race. Now living in Brasil I felt too for Felipe so kudos to Massa on the podium 👍✌🤘🇬🇧🇧🇷🏁
Brought back the feelings of that race , phew , great video marc
Love the story, still havent watched the race, i began watching in 2012, but i think ill go watch the race some time.
You definitely should!
Very nice. I was thoroughly engaged through the whole video. I'd be interested in a video describing the relationships with your drivers, from then until now.
just finished the book there absolutely excellent!
👍
Man. You brought me to tears just hearing you read through that.
I had butterflies just by listing to you🙂
For real. Me too.
Hi Marc, loving tales from the tree house. I would keen on hearing about Lewis’s rookie year in F1 & the rivalry with Alonso. Thanks
Nothing better than a good story. Thanks!!
Brilliant Elvis ,keep up the good work my friend 👍
Wow - too bad you don’t get excited - great job man - love the camera angles that for a one man show must take some time and thought - much appreciated - you are a treasure for us all - keep it up - cheers 😎
👍
Why do I always think of the Simpson’s tree house of horrors every time these videos come out.
😂
Thanks for this sharing :) It was my favorite ending !
LOL at the ads. First one is 'don't eat a steak that's bigger than a deck of cards' ... the next one shows a giant steak sizzling in cast iron and "Beef, It's what for dinner"
😂
mate how the F**K am I only finding this now?? Great video bro, really enjoying it
Thanks man.👍
Wonderful story and one of the greatest sporting moments for sure
YES!! 🏁🏁🏁 Awesome day!! Mine and my girlfriends Donna kebab went flying and the dog cashed in on stray kebab meat. Well read mate, look forward to reading your book buddy. Also love your channel, it’s a formula one must for fans. Keep it up Elvis!!✌️🏁🏁🏁 F1 Rules!!! Bring on 2020 season!!!
👍
Really wonderful read. Really, it was one of the most memorable event in Formula race if not the best.
Bono trying to calm Lewis down: "box box box box ... stay out stay out ... ininininin ... ok, just go ... sorry"
😂
Amazing spectical that race was, and topped by having the most beautiful wag in f1 history in all her glory! lol
Wonderful tale mate.
These are great Marc!
Wonderful... thank you so much for sharing. :)
Outstanding narration, bravo🤗
Indeed one of the best moments of F1!
I was at local pub, 20-30 of us, some for ferrari some for mclaren.
Waiter fully dressed in West McLaren outfit (as a fan of Mclaren he smoked only West cigaretes and was member of west customer club so he got all kind of stuff for free, like tee shirts, hoodies etc.)
One friend in Sepultura tee (cheering for Masa cause his favourite metal band is from Brasil)
Few guys with Ferrari flags.
One of most intense sporting event that I watched, we were cheering like our own country play in football world cup final (and since 2018 I can say it was that intense).
Of course I was hearthbroken but still one of best sporting event that I watched.
Brilliant!👍
brilliant video Elvis
The 80 secs where Felipe was World Champion... I was so sad for poor Felipe but Lewis earned it. It was the last time F1 was really interesting. No radio, no strategies just driving on the edge. EPIC!
