- Another episode of "Tales From The Treehouse" today, in which I'm recalling the bizarre situation during the USGP at Indianapolis, when only 6 F1 cars raced and Kimi Raikkonen and Ron Dennis got in a big fight...with me stuck in the middle...enjoy.
Link if you want to buy my book below.
Let me know if you have any suggestions for further episodes. 👍

At least you connected Kimi's drink.
😂
Marc be like: "You WILL get the drink"
Modestas Janulis ThatLithuanianBoi Kim will have the drink for the formation lap, then he can have the strong *D R I N K* i like to call alchohol
Is it emptying the bottle?
For that one race, they could have atleast put a drink he likes in the bottle.
Hi Marc don't underestimate how enjoyable these takes are from you, I think you could do more videos just discussing particular F1 events or moments, even ones you weren't involved in and just giving your take.
👍
How about that time when at a Monaco Grand Prix Kimi went straight to his yacht after his car blew up? Might be a fun tale to tell.
It wasn't his yacht, actually. He was later on photographed dead drunk on the same yacht.
I'll definitely take more tales from the tree house Marc these are, whether good or bad tales, from a golden era i remember with great fondness in my early years as an F1 fan and thank you for sharing 👌 more please 😁
13:01 Elvis has left the building.
I love these insights! I've just finished reading your book which is full of these amazing stories. Keep it up
hello @superGt, viewer here !
I wonder if Kimi realizes how hillarious he is?
Not really ....
Thats a great story. I never got to see all the drama live. That was the year before I started watching F1. Being around Kimi off camera has to be hilarious.
I started laughing in anticipation before you got into the tree house. What a great idea, your Kimi voice was better last time though.....fantastic
😂
Great idea to share from your book!!! The only idea I would share is seeing if you could get Kimi to teleconference in and share even more stories. Although I’m sure he might have some of you you don’t want told. 😂
😂
I remember that race with a very positive feeling! Sure, I understand that not everyone at that time was a fan of the scuderia Minardi but I was ;-)
Same. Not because Minardi but because I'm portuguese and Tiago Monteiro get the only podium finish of a portuguese driver in the Jordan.
@@conceptualmessiah01 The guy was exploding with joy, it was not possible to be happy about him!
I stayed up very late to watch this race and was not dissapointed! It's the only one where the crowd were throwing rubbish onto the track, something to remember!
#AskElvis Are F1 cars ever asymmetrical? In a track like Austria where there are only two left-handers, would engineers ever setup a car to be stiffer or lower on one side? I know that they do it in oval racing (obviously) but I’ve never heard of it being done in F1. I’d really like to know if this ever happened during your time at McLaren and if so, how often? Thanks for the videos and engagement Marc! You’re always entertaining.
I think Tyrell built a car with one front steering arm and suspension longer than the other. They worked out that one track was mainly left handers and that this front end would be an advantage. It never raced so it was either banned or proved not to work. Can’t find a picture so not certain of the team but saw the car at a vintage event in the 80´s
I'm pretty sure they are. I'm not a technician but it makes a lot of sense because marginal changes result in substantial gains. And probably is more pronounced in qualify setups.
the 2014 lotus has 2 tusks of different lengths on the front of its nose
An old Manor F1 owned laptop was sold to someone and in the laptop there were car setup parameters. And yes things like camber, toe, tire pressures etc were different from one side to another. I can't remember if there were any difference to front and back.
@ In Front/Back there need to be differences because of the uneven weight distribution, Aero load, the Front steering, different suspension geometries and so on.
Kimi seems to be a mecanic before his f1 days. Also on kart level.
He surely is one of a kind.
He and vettel are very funy with there helmets off.
"Tales From The Treehouse"
Looks more like a snipers nest with the unlucky victims buried beneath when seeing all those gravestones.
I was gonna mention this! Is your treehouse in a graveyard?
Elvis I really have grown to look forward to all of your content mate. Thank you so much for keeping it coming and providing us all with something nice to enjoy in the rubbish current times.
Thanks for watching.👍
So glad we still got Kimi
Love the Mexican Kimi Raikkonen - who’s swearing goes ‘Boi-oinnngg’ !! Superb impersonation there !! Lol. Rx
😂
Would love to see one of these videos about Nurburgring 2005. Must’ve been an absolute nightmare
👍
You might like this true story.
In the 1970’s my uncle was the chief mechanic for Lotus, they used to travel through Europe in a convoy with the car transporters and the other teams in their convoys would be on the road on the same route at the same time.
About a couple of hrs away from the next F1 track for the next race, they approached a railway crossing and came across Ron Dennis standing alone on the side to the road, they stopped and asked if everything was OK to which asked “couldn’t give us a lift to the track could you lads?”
To which of course they did. And Ron arrived at the track for the next race in the Lotus convoy.
During the rest of the journey with Ron in the truck they all pissed themselves laughing all the way because Ron told them that the Maclaren convoy stoped at the crossing while a long train passed, he got out for a walk and cigarette, and then realised the convoy had carried on and left without him.
Brilliant😂
Poor Kimi. That was hard I am sure. I also live in Oval land with the drag strip. augh! But that conversation must have been intense.....had heard about this race a few ago, but hearing the inside is always amazing.
As an American who witnessed that (on TV) I was pissed and knew that F1 had been trying to break into the American market on the American Most Holy Ground for motorsport, and totally FUCKED IT UP!
Marvellous Kimi imitation...😜 Bit like Seb and Kimi in Australia this year...
Max Mosley talking about "a lack of leadership" during Australia is incredible considering he oversaw this disaster and didn't act at all.
He did act actually, it was one or two of the teams that really let F1 down in the end...
By any chance was the cars of the "one or two teams that let F1 down " of a slightly reddish tinge and driver feedback given in a mid Atlantic/ German accent ?? 🤔
@@F1Elvis Totally agree Marc... we all know its actually the CURRENT FIA president who refused to act and let F1 down that day.
Kimi has always had a way of putting F1 in its place.
Yet he turned in from formation lap.
@@teppo9585 that or trash the car just like ralf and never race in F1 again
This is a fun idea, I really enjoyed it. If it hasn't been done next it's got to Hungary 2007, surely!

You need to put “tales from the tree house” in the title, and a playlist so we don’t miss any
I take the playlist comment back, I see you’re way ahead of me ;)
I remember that race. As an American, being an F1 fan was (and is) always a bit frustrating. Here is the most exciting form of auto racing in the world, racing in the most exciting locations in the world, and I live in a country where people think that the ultimate test of man and machine is driving around an oval for 500 or 600 miles, or going in a straight line on a 1/4 mile drag strip.
The Indianapolis F1 was getting lots of build up from one of the three major TV networks in the country (this was before everything was done on cable channels), and the race was going to be broadcast live on a Sunday afternoon when its major competition was going to be Baseball (a couple of hours of boredom punctuated periodically by moments of excitement) and Golf (a couple of hours of boredom punctuated by nothing). I was hyping the event to all of my friends. I wanted them to finally see the excitement of tiny cars going impossibly fast around a circuit that actually involved turning to the right as well as the left. I thought it would finally be a chance for F1 to make some real inroads into the American market.
Boy was I wrong.
If I close my eyes it's almost as if Kimi himself is there with you!
😂😂😂
I thought you might have a good story to tell from the garage..but I wasn't expecting anything as good as this! That Kimi accent cracked me up so much. Great stuff thanks Marc!
😊
Thanks Elvis! Some very fun 14 minutes spent listening to you stories. Thank you again for the great entertainment 🤗🙏👍
👍
Bought your audiobook last year, best racing book I've ever consumed. Highly recommend it to anyone who likes racing.
Thank you
These stories about Kimi are gold! Please share more of these!
I was there! We'd saved for a whole year to fly to the USA! Such a strange memory. Bonus though is that indy was cool.
I'd flown in from the UK for the races from 2000 to 2004 and had decided to go to other races in 2005 so I missed all the chaos.
Loved the story, looking forward to the next one. Maybe you got a good one behind the scenes of some Lewis/Fernando drama?
Ooh, I have...👍
@@F1Elvis Look forward to it. 👍

Yes I remember getting up early here in NZ to watch the race and couldn't believe what I was witnessing. A shameful day for F1 for sure. Loved your book Marc and really enjoying these "tales from the treehouse " filling those stories out.
Great storytelling :) I remember feeling so sorry for the fans at the track, but also for the Michelin teams. I was also angry that the Bridgestone teams (one in particular) were so unhelpful. No matter what suggestions were made to help the race happen, even those where all Michelin teams said they'd happily go without any points, they said no to it.
A race of _some_ sort could have taken place, the Bridgestone teams would have got all the points, we as fans could have had some sort of entertainment, but no, Ferrari in particular wouldn't have it because they knew it was a guaranteed 1-2 and they wanted the "optics". To have let other teams run, they might have come in lower down on the road even if they knew they'd win in the end.
This is still something which rankles me. Each time they threaten to leave F1, I shrug and think those who run F1 should call their bluff. They won't go, F1 is literally their only advertising. Sports car racing, great as it is, is far more a "niche" sport than F1. And over the decades (I remember Enzo running the team...) they've often been quite a toxic team. I know there are Ferrari fans out there, and I'm not knocking them - you like who you like, it's none of my business, but it's such a political team that I can't take to them at all, irrespective of who's driving for them (and some of my fave drivers have done just that). They don't even respect their drivers. At least without Enzo, they do seem to give a damn about getting their drivers back in one piece and breathing. There was a time... smh.
Brilliant video Marc. Another mess I think F1 have made of situations in the past and probably in the future.
great video as always, I wish there was a documentary about this race, there must be so much unseen footage and even if there isn't so many stories from all over the pit like yours and what stories do team principles have.
This is incredible! Only just come across the channel, thanks so much, Marc.
👍
I purchased your book on audio form. Congratulations, it's so interesting, descriptive, and entertaining . Thank you.
Love your Kimi impersonation!😄😆🤣
😂
I remember when you first started these videos you said you were going to build treehouse for the kids so it's great to see that it's well underway. So tales from the treehouse is is a fabulous way to inspire you to get the next book out and inspire us to get this one. Keep giving us these treats, thank you. 🏁💜
This race really showed how the teams put themselves ahead of the fans, permanently dampened my enthusiasm for F1 to some degree.
I remember asking a lad to swap shifts with me at work so I could watch it and I nearly died of embarrassment during it all .
Thoroughly enjoyed this video. Keep em coming. 😊
👍
Great insight into one of the most famous F1 weekends in history. Would be interested in hearing about your experience at McLaren with the MP4-18 and Newey.
He has already told about MP4-18
That was an awesome insiders tale, especially the Kimi impressions, LMAO.
Hi Marc, thanks for these videos! Bought your book after your previous anecdote video (the blue hands one). Normally my short attention span causes some challenges finishing a book, but finished this one in a day! Wonderful read, with some beautiful insights into seasons I witnessed as a teenager.
Thank you, I appreciate it.👍
Loved the book! Finished it recently. You are a great story teller!
👍
NASCAR has a similar nightmare at Indianapolis too. Tire issues. The race has never been attended as well again!
Thanks! I sort of remember watching that race... Christijan Albers got his only points in F1...
(at that time we did not see Dutch drivers scoring points very often)
Remember watching that race, gutted that the problem couldn't be resolved - the one thing that stood out for me was DC on his radio pleading to be let racing and take the risks but still told no, always will have alot of respect for DC for that
I think all the drivers wanted to race to be fair, but the legal ramifications, particularly in America, of racing when Michelin couldn't guarantee the safety if their tyres, was too serious.
remember that weekend well - they knew already tyres were an issue
Bro i was THERE recently moved from Pakistan, broke, huge Schumacher fan lived in Atlanta drove to Indianapolis with 5 friends (only 1 knew what formula 1 was about) other 4 were scarred for life because of the roaring engine sound. I was happy that Schumi won that race (I think his only for the season). Thanks for walking me down the memory lane and for that i am about to order your book :)
👍
Great story. I liked the part about your first pitstop as well, really entertaining 😁
One of your best videos yet!
One of my favorite stories from your book. Liking the new Tales from the Treehouse series.
Yes please more of these, this was great fun and an interesting insight into the often bizarre world of F1
Thankfully I missed this race as a huge thunderstorm took out the electricity 🤣🤣 the only bit I saw was where the Michelin runners turned in to the pits on the formation lap.
Ha! I was at that race with my then 9-year-old son. We'd gotten up at 4:30 am to drive down to Indy from Chicago, not knowing if there was going to be a race. That's 200 miles if you aren't familiar with the geography. I was really worried there wouldn't be a race and about how disappointed he was going to be. But he was a huge Michael fan, so we might have been the only fans there satisfied with the outcome! I was more relieved than happy, he was thrilled. It was the last race we saw in person till we go to Silverstone in '16.
👍
I was in the crowd that day. Anger doesn’t cover it. So expensive. So much time devoted to go. And then experience that farce
I had been to the previous five GPs there as part of a trip from the UK. I'm glad I stopped going there. I had enjoyed the weekends and the trips but got tired by there being an expensive hotel price for fans and a standard price for non race fans.
Good stuff...insight into the inner workings of things is always top shelf.
Awesome Marc! What's great is that I'm reading your book right now. so how about at some point you get into "Spy-gate!" That's where I am in your book at the moment.
👍
Hi Marc, first time watching your channel and really enjoyed this one. You should more like this!
Thank you and welcome along.👍
Great story, keep these tree-house stories up, I enjoyed that. What I remember is that Michelin runners could have just used the pit lane every lap to avoid the banked corner. But they refused to, it was like "either we race properly or we don't". I feel like Michelin runners should have used the pit lane instead of engaging in brinksmanship. It robbed the fans obviously of a race. Also, how is it that people in the F1 circus could gamble like that? Surely that is now banned as it is for other sports, otherwise the sport is at risk of manipulation.
That's not actually how it played out, there were lots of legal and political issues and it was actually Ferrari who stopped the most obvious solution of installing a temporary chicane to allow the race to happen.
F1 shouldn't be a problem they're owned by a media company if they don't grasp the concept that it's online and TV is a future of their sport they don't deserve to be in the business. I would think of most professional sports organizations there in the best position because of the fact they are owned by a media company who should have access and grasp the concepts. If they don't they need to fire The executives
Thanks for these "Tales from the Treehouse" I find them very entertaining and interesting - in fact soo much that I picked up a copy of your book (had to be in e-book format in the present situation). I have just started reading it and find some interesting fact about the P34 that I wasn't aware of, I have always thought that it was aerodynamical reasons behind the design. Fun fact about the two "ancient" F1 cars you mention - I've seen both the P34's and the BT46B's only victories live as both cars won the Swedish GP and Scandinavian Raceways in Anderstorp '76 and '78 respectingly.
👍Thanks
For the next one, maybe something from the 2007 Season? Love the content.
That would be very interesting, especially how McLaren managed their drivers so they don’t win the championship.
Hello Marc, I'd love to hear your version of events from the Japanese Grand Prix in 2005, your thoughts before and after qualifying, and whether yourself and indeed Kimi had the belief you could win from towards the back of the grid. It would be great to hear your reaction to that last lap pass of course!
Good one, one of my favourite days in F1...👍
@@F1Elvis pls bring this episode 🙏
Love these kind of insights, Was trying to think of any you would have been in with but I get dates mixed up.
TBH anything at all from you is worth tuning into.
Nice one Mac, keep bringing it bro 👍
I was at that race sitting in the short-shoot between turns 3 and 4 on the oval. It was the most shocking turn of events during a race weekend I have ever witnessed.
One reason I like to watch ur videos is ur beautiful accent 😂 which is really helpful for improving my own accent.
Great Story - Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it
you do a good Kimi. though forgot the typical "buaah..." :-)
Listening to the Audible.com version of your book now! I love the fact YOU are the one reading it... Definitely entertaining in every aspect.

Awesome idea!!! Love tales from the treehouse!
I don't comment a lot but this one I had to. Please do more of these Marc. You have such a unique position and must have so many great stories. I can see why you wrote a book. Thanks for these. I really enjoy them. 👍👍
Marc you saved my race at Austin being my engineer
Please do more stories, this was great.
👍
I know a good few that were calling the bookies after the first couple of hours at Barcelona when the Brawn Mercedes hit the track
It's an awesome book Marc, loved it 👍
Great video thou.... Great too hear inside stories....
Great vlog Marc as usual.
Thanks for the great insight. I wish ppl would realize F1 lost a LOT of US fans that day and haven't done much to win their trust back yet.
I remember all this ... I was stunned when all the Michelin runners pulled in the pits. when I realized how close it was for Ralph Schumacher (He was lucky to be alive)..I understood
Not only US fans were duped. This Dutchman was there as well.
I think 2005 was a blessing in disguise.
While it was a total disaster for the community, it led a new way of thinking for having a “stand-alone” F1 based circuit in the USA.
This was the creation of the idea for COTA in 2009/2010 which then opened in 2012. It’s already a huge fan favourite on Television and the fans trackside. I love the race but didn’t like Indy.
So in my view it was a short, sharp pain but look at what we have now.
Great subject to elaborate on Marc.
How’s the 2nd book progressing??
Excellent, love the inside stories. Thank you.
Presumably if Kimi (or any other Michelin runner) defied their team and wemt around to the grid, they'd have got no further than the first scheduled fuel stop?
Would've been pretty funny seeing Kimi having to get out of the car and try and work out how the fuel rig worked!
An interesting and funny story well told. Thanks Marc.
Keep it coming Marc 🙏
I read the book and loved it! 👏🏻😊
Keep them coming Marc....
Excellent video Marc! Tales from the treehouse great hit
This is very good maybe some story's of the whole montoya coming and going and ironically ending it all at Indie.
Gotta love Kimi's attitude
I was there for that weekend, and remember Ralf’s tire failure and resulting shunt well. Also remember all of the talk Saturday evening while at the Union Jack having dinner. Fair amount of the Jordan crew were there at the bar. Started circulating throughout the restaurant that the race was likely not going to happen. Showed up Sunday still hopeful, and was so disappointed to see the cars park after formation lap. Was even more disappointed in my fellow American fans throwing stuff on track. Absolutely unacceptable. Still came back the next two years. Loved that race and miss it dearly. Was there all but the first 2 years for it. Was an amazing value compared to Austin.
I remember that F1 has not returned since.
Not sure I'd describe that as being 'caught in an argument' more a case of being 'witness to an argument'
