if the old belt is still intact and not jumped time you can create your own timing marks with a marker or something on the timing gears and corresponding marks on the old belt. once it's off count the teeth between the marks and transfer the marks to new belt. so easy and quick, and you really can't mess up the timing.

Hey guys. I have the same engine. My belt broke on mines while sitting at a light. Tension pulley is the cause. The only thing is when it broke. You know by nature you try to crank it back up which makers the cam shaft spin if I'm correct. How can I get them all back in line. The top two are pointing in the 1 o'clock position and the bottom is well maybe at 5. Besides I've been trying to start it. By replacing other crap other than the real issue lol. I replaced the pump in Dec of 2016 and now the belt breaks. So I'm stumped on what to do. Thanks if you guys could give your insight.

Im thinking the reason this video has only 10k views is because of UA-cam's subscriptions page design (at least on the mobile devices). i didnt see this video pop up until today... and i scroll thru my entire list every night and morning. When I watch a video, I set it to "watched" so its hidden on my phone. I had nothing else to view last night or this morning. I checked again tonight, and here was this video.
So youtube must be purposely putting hiding certain videos on peoples subscription feeds until a later date (maybe to favor other youtubers that bring in more viewers/advertisements?)

The timing (pun intended) of this video was poor in my circumstances. But that was out of your control. I just did this job 2 weeks ago on my wife's car with 220,000 miles (second time I've done it on this car, we have had it awhile). Unfortunately I screwed up the timing, the car wouldn't start so I enlisted the help of a mechanic buddy with more experience. I pulled it apart again and found the rear cam was off about 90deg. I'm not sure how that happened, after getting the new timing belt on I checked all my marks or at least thought I did and thought it was all good. I wished I would have marked them all with white paint, that would have helped. I think what I did was while trying to put tension on the belt between the rear and front cam pulleys I turned the rear cam, noticed it turned and turned it back, but it must have moved again and I didn't realize it. So after correcting the timing on all the pulleys the second time around, I had my buddy check and it all looked good. Fortunately turning the motor over with it out of timing didn't bend any valves that I know of and it runs great now.

Kudos. You always teaching us with your great videos. I'm looking forward to change my timing belt, rebuilt the transmission, and change the rear main seal in my Accord 99 V6 3.0.
I just wanted to show you and other people here this video in spanish about how to synchronize not the only the camshaft and the crankshaft, but also the other two gears (front and rear where the belt gets around too. Very valuable info. The rear gear has two marks (on the gear and the shaft). And on the front gear you need to get that bolt out to insert a long screwdriver all the way in. That gear has one mark but he says it won't matter if it doesn't have the mark if the screwdriver goes all the way in, I guess just to be safe get that mark and all the screwdriver in. On minute 6:45 he also explains to do not rotate the camshaft without the timing belt, and that if you do, then you should rotate the crankshaft mark on a horizontal plane(way). And depending in what unsynchronized position the crankshaft gear mark, then you move the mark to the closest horizontal plane (90 degrees). And then move your camshaft to put in the right up/mark position so you won't damage the valves. ua-cam.com/video/b_F-YLZk2tI/v-deo.html

If you do Honda timing belts often enough, I HIGHLY recommend getting a Lisle 77080 19mm harmonic balancer socket. These are about three pounds of impact socket with a 1/2" drive. Use with a decent air impact (not even a heavy duty one) and it will take the bolt out of the harmonic balancer EVERY time ... no muss, no fuss. I was amazed at how well it worked. You can find them on Amazon for ~$23 on Prime. Absolutely a no brainer if you do these on a regular basis. Every Honda engine I've worked on, whether 4-cyl or 6-cyl has the 19mm balancer bolt which you can use this on. www.amazon.com/Lisle-77080-Harmonic-Balancer-Socket/dp/B00RGNCV1U/

to whom it may concern..I did a very similar job on a KIA sportage..all went well except....on the top of the upper timing belt cover 7:28 there is a little plastic seal ..make DAMM sure this thing is tucked in because mine apparently got caught up between the cam sprocket and the belt and jumped the time about 60 degrees while I was tooling down the highway celebrating my successful timing belt/water pump job. Luckily, it didnt junk the engine..but it did wreck my trip to the botanical garden and forced me to redo the job. Just a heads up!!

Hardest part was getting the crank pulley bolt loose, they are no joke.
Most technical part was getting the new timing belt on “just so.”

  • @ml414skidoo

Found the crank bolt comes out easy with an impact. The rear cam pulley is tricky to center and want to rotate forward or back instead of rest lined up with marks. Do not remove crank pulley Key or if you do realign timing ring, sprocket to crank. Mark old belt teeth before removing tensioner the make same marks on new belt to make sure rear pulley does not skip, crank and front pulley will stay put when using tips in this video.

Power steering leak and mostly a water pump leak. Belts help acceleration, fuel economy, and keeping the engine quiet. All the good stuff. The less mass you have to move the better. It's physics. It's like the unsprung weight formula for a better riding vehicle.

I used a 4X Torque Multiplier and have never had any problems removing crank bolts. It is a lot safer, since the torque is gradually applied to the bolt, and I never have a problem where the bolt release and your knuckles smashes into something. Other than the cost I'm surprised that people don't use it more often.

After the timing belt change. No engine error, no code. All ok. Except, there is a small faint knoking sound from the engine and the engine seems to be running stronger than before. Meaning, a stronger noise too. Would that be something with the timing belt change?

There is also no need to replace the screw type tensioner. As long as you have a bracket all you have to do is take the 8mm off of the bottom and use a #1 flat head screwdriver to bring it back in. As long as the seal is good it won't ever go bad. I've never seen one fail.

Brian I've had an odyssey 2001 and its served me well aside from trans rebuild and cooky electrical problems and oh, yes the Machiavellian engineering making self repairs seem like a seen from 'A Beautiful Mind'. I'm currently looking for another used vehicle and to be honest the odyssey has been a bittersweet experience. I'm looking at the Tundra, or a newer odyssey.
I'm open. Can you recommend a vehicle
    Wish you were closer.

Hey Brian, I have a 2002 Accord 3.0 and need to do the timing belt on it, so thank you for such a timely video. I have been doing research, and a couple of places indicate that the 3.0L Honda engine and I think the 3.6L are the only two Non Interference engines in the Honda line up. Can you confirm or deny this? If it is not an interference engine, should I wait to do the belt until it breaks, or just bite the bullet and spend the weekend getting the job done?

Replaced the timing belt on 97 Acura 3.0CL 6 cylinder, automatic. Drove it and found this: From a dead start the car hesitates/power loss when going into 2nd gear but will gain speed. In neutral it sputters at 3,000 RPM and will not going higher in RPM. I'm thinking it is one tooth off forward on the front camshaft sprocket. I also noticed that the idle is about 600-650 instead of the 800-850 where it should be. Does anyone have any ideas?

I have to say that now I've seen this and how much work is involved, I'm surprised on the price my sister got from a Honda dealership for a 05 Honda with a v-6! I think 627 dollars is not all that bad, what do you think? Oh, and that's parts included!

    • @briansmobile1
      @briansmobile1  7 років тому +2

That's very decent. It's usually north of $700 with all the parts listed. If it's just the belt and no pump or timing kit, that would be about right.

How do you know/read about firing order for the vehicles?
I often noticed it's better way to change idler pulleys and tensioner and water pump when replacing timing belts. It leads us to go more thousand miles conveniently, other way Idler Pulleys or Water Pump may deteriorate before timing belt.
