  • Welcome to the first video for the Gathagan Automotive channel. In this video we troubleshoot a misfire on a 2008 Acura TL. In the video I mention that the vehicle is driven hard. That is an understatement. Imagine drag strip driving in an Acura! I hope you enjoy!

    If you have misfire codes, try replacing thermostat. May sound silly but my 3rd gen Tl had 16 codes multiple misfires etc & soon as I changed my thermo all codes left and a month later still no return

    Perfect Video. I Watched it cause I Have a 2013 TL. Code P0302 . It starts smooth and then it's starts shaking. But the funny tricky part is. I disconnected every coil one by one and I could feel the difference in the idle.. until I get to cyl-6 shake stays the same.. But my scanner reads 302 which is cyl-2 and not 6 were the shake stays the same . Spark plug is good and coil is arking . Hopefully is a tight valve

    I've got an Acura TL 3.7 Random P0304, when computer detects misfire it throws VSA, SH-AWD, Hill Assist, EVAP lights. I can pull over, clear all codes and it will drive fine for about 100 miles and it throws P0304 all over again. Tested coil, changed plug, injector, problem remains. I have a tick noise that never goes away. I've had the timing belt, tensioner replace and had valves adjusted. Tick remains as well as random P0304. Oh one more thing, after misfire detected, I can turn off the car and restart and misfire goes away. Any ideas

    Very informative video, thanks! My 2007 TL ripped it's timing belt in two places (only 5000 miles on the belt and new water pump, tensioner, the works)! The car had a completely shot right side motor mount, I'm wondering if that may have caused the failure. Anyway, I did a leak down check of the cylinders and they looked good, all around 5%, with the worst at 8% so hopefully no valve damage. I've reassembled the engine now, it's running rough and am getting a P0302 code, engine misfire. I'm hoping it's the valve lash like your car here or even better a coil pack.

    Have a 2012 Acura TL that #4 is misfiring... My mechanic can see someone has re-wired #4 and he wants to put a new wiring harness in for $2K. Says just doing #4 wont cut it as the wiring looks like it was done well/ I am confused. My neighbor another qualified mecanic says he can re-wire #4. Not sure it will work. First mecanic says computer looks good. Anything else we can look at??? Thanks G

    im having misfires on my 08 accord with the 3.5. cylinders 4, 5, 6, then another code that says random/multiple misfires. im assuming thats just there because im having multiple cylinder misfires (please correct me if im wrong). i tried swapping the coils from one bank to the other. That did nothing. I replaced all spark plugs. Again, nothing. i replaced leaky air intake hose and that didn't do anything either. Finally, i took it to my local mechanic. All they did was swap my spark plugs again. :(
    After that, i took it to my local honda dealer for a diagnosis. i had a leaky ac compressor and power steering pump. i dont feel like any of those leaks would cause my misfires. they also said that i needed new injectors and a new fuel rail. I replaced all of my fuel injectors and my fuel rail with oem parts. I was so sure that was going to fix it because honda told me it would but no i was incorrect. the misfires dont usually trigger the engine light to blink. the blinking has only happened twice. my engine light, vsa, and warning lights all come on at the same time. it only comes on when the engine is cold. it usually takes about 2:15s for the lights to come on. if anyone has any ideas please let me know. im beaten down at this point. ive been dealing with this slowly over a period of about 5 months

      Hey, Ive got the same car and same issues as you, except its bank 1 that is misfiring for me (cyl 1,2,3). Each bank has a VTEC/VCM solenoid valve assembly (one on front, one on rear) sometimes the rod inside that assembly can get stuck mechanically and for that reason would not throw a code for low voltage in the circuit. Trying to fix these J35 accords are very difficult. Have you fixed your issue since your post?

    • @damnitdang
      @damnitdang 2 роки тому

      @@iiiiii8522 did you fix your problem? I'm having the same bank problem as yours on my 3.5 RL. Swapped all new spark plugs, swap coils around. Same thing. Mis fire stayed in 123.

    • @iiiiii8522
      @iiiiii8522 2 роки тому +2

      @@damnitdang Yes, I fixed it. The owner before me changed the timing belt kit including the belt, idler bearings and hydraulic tensioner. Problem was his mechanic used a non-genuine chinese kit and the hydraulic tensioner seal failed and leaked all the fluid out, which meant that the belt was a bit loose. Had only done about 10k miles on it over 2 years since timing belt kit was done so I ruled out timing as an issue. After all the diagnostics, I pulled one of the cam pulley covers and saw the timing belt was shredded a bit. So the result was that the belt was tight enough to stay in time on the front cam pulley (Bank 2 ie. cyl 4,5,6) but loose enough on the rear cam pulley. Replacing the timing belt kit is a lot of work, so I'd recommend taking the front camshaft pulley cover off to inspect. Check the quality of the belt and check how loose it is (pull with your finger the rear part of the pulley as the engines belt runs clockwise) if there is any play at all there, it's the cause of the issue and needs to be fully inspected and replaced. BTW, the timing belt on these vehicles is rock hard, you shouldn't be able to even move the belt at all - it's that tight.

    • @damnitdang
      @damnitdang 2 роки тому

      @@iiiiii8522 so you fixed the problem by replacing just the timing belt tensioner? Did you adjust the valve first?
      I'm doing a valve job now on my wife's car, only finish the 123. Gonna finish it up today when I get home... my problem was all the sudden I got misfire. 123 wasn't working. Even swapping coils to the front . I have checked the tensioner yet. I'll have to do that after the valves so i can jack up the car and take off the cover

    • @iiiiii8522
      @iiiiii8522 2 роки тому +1

      @@damnitdang I changed the whole timing belt kit which came with a belt, idler bearings and the tensioner. The tensioner was the cause, but you might as well replace the whole kit whilst you're there. I managed to check the front upper cover (camshaft pulley for bank 2) by just loosening the serpentine belt tension and squeezing it past it. Much better if you can just inspect that way rather than doing the full procedure. I'd suggest that adjusting the valve clearances won't fix your misfiring issue if bank 1 is misfiring a fair bit. It shouldn't really cause it to misfire.

      Wish I could get mine resolved. First bad timing belt tensioner broke Timing Belt. damaged bent valves. machined shop rear bank cylinder head replaced front cylinder with a remanufactured head. installed both heads with new gaskets, along with new timing belt and tensioner. Adjust valves twice. All cylinders throws misfire codes including Random misfires at idle. Engine will start fine, then start to misfire and idle rough, then within 3 minutes or when it started to warm up, I hear couple popping or knocking sound from the cylinder head then the engine started to run smooth. compression is ok except number I cylinder has a variance of about 10 pounds in difference with the cylinders on bank1 but about 20lbs difference with bank 2 cylinders which read higher than bank 1. Scan Tool shows that cylinder 1 started the misfire. In stalled New fuel injector in #1 cylinder and spark plug. The coils are fairly New. Car runs good with much power without any misfires except when started and idling before warm up. Pulled coil wire and cylinder all firing. Wondering what to do next, dont want remove cylinder head again and reluctant to take it to the Dealer for diagnosis.
