  • The Toothache Tree's leaves and bark can be utilized as a strong local numbing agent and antibacterial drug. The Tree goes by several names including; Tingle Tongue, Hercules' club, pepperwood, or the southern prickly ash.
The Tree elicits a numbness of the mouth, teeth, and tongue induced by the chewing of its leaves or bark. The tree has been historically used for medicinal purposes by both Native Americans and early settlers.

Bob Hansler, the video was pretty excellent! I particularly enjoyed when you decided to try some in front of the camera. Your grin before tossing it in your mouth was classic though! Thanks for sharing. I hope that you are feeling a bit better. Your update was welcome to all of us concerned about your well being. Your kind wife has responded to several of your viewers. It is refreshing to see such genuine concern amidst whom are otherwise strangers. Keep your head up friend.

Glad you enjoyed the video and thank you for the kind words. Bob actually filmed that video without me. I enjoyed the looks on his face also once I watched it.
We head back to the doctor late next week to see how recovery is going and when the next surgery will be. We will continue to update. Take care...Shauna

got stuck between Valentine and Van Horn, Texas when my truck broke down, never knew all this useful stuff was around me, thanks for the information, it took 12 hours for the tow truck to get to me, ran out of water about 6 hours into the breakdown and would have been in trouble if it were not for my fellow truckers but a lot of those Texas back roads are long and desolate, people should take care cause phone service is spotty on the back roads.

+peter8488 That desert will kill you pretty fast if you aren't ready for it. I've spent a decade out there in those Davis Mountains in the distance and have a huge respect and love of that area. I'll be producing a series on water procurement for such situations and will have a few pointed at that area and climate in particular. There are still some frontier paces out there in this world, no all has been bubble wrapped by and for this upcoming generation. Though it can be daunting,,, and some will not fair well... I hope that these places remain dangerous. Keep watching. The truly helpful videos will begin to roll out mid January. Take care my friend.

A good place to look for them in the south is along old farming fence lines. Farmers would plant em to keep cattle off the fence along with their other properties

Gullrica Little clouds block the sun for moments at a time today, make it feel normal for a short while. When the sun is uncovered once more you can feel your skin burn while your clothing begins to feel as though you are standing too close to a fire. Thinking I will be making videos further North this time next year. Thank you for the comments : )

I once made the mistake of putting a prickly ash berry and a wild chile pepper, Chile Pequin, in my mouth at the same time. I don't recommend that. The burning capsaicin from the pepper rode on the increased saliva from the prickly ash and the burning sensation lasted much too long, much longer than usual. My friends thought it was funny, though, watching my eyes water.

I have one in my yard, but it's spindly, skinny. It doesnt get much sunlight because of the other, bigger trees around it. How should I propagate it? Soft wood cuttings, then root in water or directly in soil?
    TIA.

Note that it's mildly toxic (not the fruit though, that's completely edible) so don't consume too much. As for applying it to skin or the mouth, I don't think there's side effects to that.
