My 9 inch wrist is waiting. I ordered this watch before the video was over. I'm hoping this will become my daily driver. I've had one experience with a Bulova before - sort of - it's long story but it's true and I think quite funny. I hope you enjoy it. When I was 15 I worked for my father at his auto shop in Detroit. Among other things we serviced a fleet of flower delivery trucks. A few of the drivers were somewhat shady. I owned 2 watches, a Timex I wore when working and a Helbros I wore when not working. One day one of the drivers offered to sell me a beautiful Bulova for $40 (this was about 1978). I inspected it the best I could and it looked great to my eyes. I ran to the office and asked my father if Bulova was a good marque and he said it was so I did the deal. This was a lot of money to me because I was being paid $2.25/hour. After the deal was done I went into the office to show my father my new object of pride and barely cracking a smile he said "Yep Bulova makes a damn good watch, and Bolivia is a country in South America, I'm not sure what Bulovia is." On close inspection the face of my watch spelled BULOVIA. It ran for 3 days and then stopped. All the adults laughed at me for weeks and I was offered all kinds of "good deals" from the rest of the crew. I laughed with them - you can never take yourself too seriously. Thanks for reading.
I'm retired law enforcement. I wore this watch on duty for the last two years of my career. You can't possibly be more "rough and tumble" with your watch than I was with mine, yet the crystal survived unscathed. Every review I see of this watch has concern for the box crystal. My experience showed this is entirely overblown. Wears fine on my 7.5 inch wrist, but it's my limit.
Yeah but when Red Dawn happens and the surgical nuke strike happens your watch will be rendered useless go with an automatic movement remember of watches valuable in a survival situation you can navigate with her that's something that you can't do if it's not working now Brainiac
@@kidstlme8230 the extent that watch snobs will go to dismiss quartz movements is astonishing. I guess you have to dream up an "end of the world" scenario to justify owning an automatic now. Hey "Brainiac". if an EMP burst has effectively brought down everything with an electronic heartbeat, the last concern I have is whether or not my watch is working. If nuclear holocaust has blasted us back to the stone age, the fact that I have a automatic watch on my wrist, isn't going to jump start the industrial revolution.
I have this watch. It is a bit big for my puny wrists but I find myself wearing it more often than any of my other watches. I just can’t get over how accurate it is. It hasn’t deviated 1 second in the time I have had it. I set it at dst time change and that’s it. Amazing.
And one other point. Put this on the widest and thickest strap you can find and it won’t seem as large as it does on the included straps. I had a custom made leather strap for another of my watches and I put it on the lunar pilot. Makes a great difference.
My son, an aerospace engineer, has this watch and loves it on a two-piece cordura. He has a 7” wrist and, I can honestly say, it gets even better looking with nicks and scratches, rocking that tool vibe. He is pretty hard on his watches but the crystal has never chipped. It is a large watch, but this one can pull it off with aplomb. I think, over time, you will be glad that you held onto it, Jody!
I own one. Love it. Amazing accuracy, incredible value. It’s too big for me. Don’t care. I still rock it on a Bond NATO or brown leather. Great review as always.
I’ve had this watch for over 2 years & love it!!! And guess what Jody? My wrist is smaller than yours! Who cares? I don’t!!! It keeps absolutely perfect time. It’s lume is great! This was my stepping stone to my grail, the Omega Speedmaster Moon watch. I’m fortunate enough to have gotten my grail around 12 months ago. I wear the Bulova as a default watch. And believe me that watch at $339US is an absolute bargain!!! Almost tempted to buy another...🤔💭😍
I have this watch on a stainless steel bracelet. It fits my 7.5 inch wrist perfectly with no overhang. Timekeeping is fantastic, I would say within one second per year. I only have to change the time autumn and spring time, and when I do, the time has never varied from the time before! Who needs radio control?
This is the only watch channel worth watching because it shows realistic watches - I just don't want to see watches I can never afford. Good down to earth reviews too. Well done.
I have admired this piece from afar for a while. I have accepted that the Omega is probably not realistic for me and purchased the Bulova. I don't mind the size at all. It is a really great watch. I purchased a Barton elite silicone band in black to solve the band issues. I don't mind the leather "carbon fiber" looking band, but envisioned this as more of a sporty looking watch.
The black case version popped up at my local Costco a couple days ago, at $275. Simply had to buy it, then swapped the leather strap to an all-black NATO. Fits my 7.5" wrist just fine. I'm a very happy person.
I took advantage of the latest Amazon Prime day and finally purchased the Bulova Lunar Pilot (two band special edition). Yes the lug to lug is a little long, but nothing crazy really, it actually wears smaller then many of my watches and my sweet spot is generally 41-42mm cases. The dial including the tachymeter is actually about 38 mm in diameter. I have small wrists (6.75 “) and I’m lovin’ it. A great tool watch with an amazing back story for very little dinero. The Bulova precisionist movement was also a great choice in my opinion.
I haven't worn a watch in 3 decades. For a treat I decided to get a Bulova Lunar Pilot with the stainless steel bracelet. My wrist size is just a hair under 7", and it fits great. I'm a huge Apollo nerd, since my father helped to design the Auxiliary Propulsion System on the S-IVB. It goes well with my Lego Saturn V, and Lunar Excursion Module.
The 262k movement in this watch is 41mm large by itself. They actually made the case as small as humanly possible to safely house the large movement; hence the low-ish 50m water resistance.
I'm not a watch collector, or connoisseur, or aficionado, by any stretch of the imagination. I've been wearing plain digital casios daily and Suuntos for decades. Now, I remember my father, who was a chief engineer in oil carrier ships, having an awesome watch. It was a Tag Heuer diver with an orange silhouette of a frogman on the dial. That´s part of his legacy to me. I also wanted to leave something like that to my children, and first time I actually thought about that, I chose the then new Tissot T-touch, but unfortunately I lost it( I was then in the spanish marines expeditionary unit). I got frustrated and started to think that the "legacy watch" idea was stupid. So fast forward to 2017 and my daughter is born. Back comes the idea of the legacy watch... This time it's no gadgety thing. I went for the Citizen "Marina Militare" prodrive automatic diver. Does it look nice on my skinny wrist? Not at all... And here´s my point after all the bullshit: I don't give a damn fuck about how the watch looks, if it's appropiate for a cocktail at the royal palace, or anything like that. I just want it to be my watch. One that, if I take care of it, I can pass onto my children. I wear it every day, on every occasion. I want it to be a part of me. The Bulova has character and heritage in spades. It's an incredibly cool watch! Don't care about it not fitting exactly to your wrist. Be proud to wear it, to make it a part of your legacy. It really deserves that kind of love.
I've had this watch for several years - since just after they first came out. I agree with Jodi's comments about the size. I wish that Bulova had made it 43mm like the original. Give it some time though and I expect you'll get used to it. Especially after you start getting tons of compliments about it. I actually got one from a little old lady in a supermarket. The original also had a 12 hour elapsed time feature that I find more useful than the new 60 minute timer. The "top hat" crystal is a feature of the original watch, so although it's an unusual way of installing a crystal, at least they have a good reason for it on this model. Great review!
Against many of the comments, I went ahead and bought it. Yes, it is bigger than any other watch I own. However, it wears soooooo well. I am not a big guy (5'9, 175lb) so I am not sure what the thing is, but it really does not look as massive as I thought it would when it's on my wrist. Very happy camper here.
Hey Jody and fellow Subs. I peeled the stickers off my Lunar Pilot YESTERDAY 👍🏼. Love it. After a l o n g time saving, then getting distracted by other cheaper watches and buying those and then repeating the process, I finally made it to Lift Off. I managed to get one (new) from a Grey Marketeer on eBay for even less than JomaShop's current $339USD.... 1st thought : F A R K it's big. I've got a flat 8 1/4" wrist and I reckon I only just get away with it. 2nd thought: I actually like the leather strap that everyone complains about, quite a lot. I always swap out the stock straps on a new watch so I have 2 cracking slaps of leather on the way from Kvarnsjö...I should've only bought 1! I haven't even put it on the NASA strap yet. This one's a keeper: I can feel it. Thank-you for the excellent review Jody. It put into final countdown. Stay healthy everyone.
Put mine on a sweet waffle strap - now I can wear it on my 6.75” wrist! Waffle texture works fantastic with this dial, while also keeping the tool/military vibe...everyone should try it - it just works!!
and dude, you are my favorite MALE watch channel guy. always straight to the point. the other male channels like teddy or that nice hair english chap with the excesses have too much fluff with the content. Jenni is awesome!
I loved the look of this watch and the super accurate movement so much that I ignored the advice and bought one. I have a 7.5 inch wrist and on the mission strap it is absolutely fine. It isn't too big, it isn't too heavy and it is just a beautiful watch. I have close to 60 watches and this is definitely one of my favourites. I love the quirky, top hat sapphire and I love the watch.
Thanks for the review. I’ve been intrigued by this watch and the Devil Diver, but the fact that they are up-sized from their ancestors has kept my cash at bay.
I have a 7” wrist and wear this watch daily with no issues. The original prototype taken on Apollo 15 was 44mm, so this guy really isn’t all that oversized. It was originally designed for legibility in the darkness of the moon. I wear it on a black/gray bond NATO and it looks amazing.
Willard Hooton Actually the watch was 43mm.....I just double checked. The true Apollo 15 moon watch was actually a Universal Geneve prototype. Bulova at that time had recently purchased the Universal Geneve and gave this prototype to Astronaut Col. Dave Scott. The original watch used a mechanical Valijoux 72 movement and required a larger case. When you consider in 1971 the average men’s wristwatch was 38 to 40mm, this was a rather large watch. In modern terms, the average watch today is 40-42mm, so I say its dead on in size comparison as a modern replica in my opinion. This link explains the Geneve if your interested: wornandwound.com/bulova-used-universal-geneve-get-moon-can-get-one-today/ And this link is particularly interesting cause it covers the issue and the original patent before the watch every went up for auction or the replica was created: www.mybulova.com/forums/bulova-chronograph-flown-moon-apollo-15 Hope this answers some questions on this great replica for some
I too, had looked at the Lunar Pilot in reviews for quite some time, but didn’t jump on it till a month ago, when it went to $336 on Amazon. My wife’s first reaction was that it looked too big on my 7.25 inch wrist. I wish it was just a hair smaller, but I am hanging on to this watch until I die. I did put it on a Mora NATO, which I saw on Dave’s channel, and find I like it more than either of the supplied straps. This was my fifth Bulova and led me to look at some older (smaller) Bulovas. I purchased two Accutrons, a Breckenridge (26B29) and an Apollo 11 (26B62). Then a NOS Accu-Swiss A-15 (65A107) instead of the new and larger 96A245. Last night, I order a refurbished Curv Chronograph (96A186). I still have more Casios and Citizens, but my Bulova collection is catching up. (Update: After a month, I put it back on the supplied Zulu, which now seems better than the NATO. The descent into madness begins. The accuracy is incredible. Easily better than 10 seconds a year.)
Lol i was just given this watch when I bought a Forstner watch band, which is a flight approved band by NASA. The one i was given was the all polished model with the old Bulova logo and no date. I have 6.75inch wrist and dont think it looks bad at all. It wears well for me and i love it. Try getting one of those bands
Us larger watch enthusiasts need watches that fit us too! I love the way my Bulova watches run and look in my wrist. They are very comfortable and super dependable as well as accurate as can be. I own two different Bulova, and I don’t regret either one. If you are a big guy these watches are made for you!
Most of the Apollo astronauts wore their own watch as well as the Speedmaster (which was NASA property) which is probably why Dave Scott 'just so happened' to have his Bulova on board. I was given this watch as a gift, and it's too big for me also, unfortunately; glad to know I'm not the only one! Great site, great review, thanks!
The story sounds a bit fishy - how did he just happen to have a prototype and at the same time that his Omega failed? I think possible that Omega crystal was deliberately popped off so he could sport the Lunar Pilot. Someone at Bulova must have bought him a really nice dinner.
It is a fantastic watch! It honestly didn't look bad at all on your wrist... But we all have a preference about how a watch "feels" on wrist and our perception of it at the distal point of our arm. The velcro Zulu does suit the watch well, as they were made to wrap around the spacesuit, and I like that they included that touch (a bit shorter bracelet for those of us not in a pressurized space suit) in the kit for the owner. Nice review... and cheers to Bulova for creating such a nice reissue/homage of their original moon-walking timepiece! Bulova - excellent company. Lots of changes over the years, and they have got some great pieces, new and old. Some of their more premium vintage watches, dive and chrono, rivaled the big names back in the 60s and 70s for a fraction of the money. Let me know if you are selling this one, Jody, because I'll snatch it up in a heartbeat and slap it on my 7.5" wrist. :-) Keep up the good work, and take care. (BTW, have you entertained the idea of JODYSHOP to flip all the watches you go through? Just saying, it's an obvious but catchy idea... haha)
Was very close to pulling the trigger on this one... a bargain for sure. Just wish it had at least 100m of water resistance. Cheers.( and a tad smaller). Well came back to edit this comment, seems I couldn’t resist this watch ( I wanted a replacement for my SpeedMaster) and this watch has scratched that itch. I was concerned about the size , but I needn’t be, I found it fine on my 7 1/4 inch wrist. It looks even better in person I my humble opinion, certainly as good as my SpeedMaster, and not nearly as fussy to maintain. Thanks again Jody!
I have an 8.5” wrist, this watch fits me like a glove. I’ve rocketed this off of a filing cabinet, thought for sure that I would have broken the crystal. Scraped the paint off it and the crystal was fine. The case got a nick though. At 52 mm it sits fine on my wrist, no overhang on the lugs, and at 45mm it’s the perfect size for me. 44mm is my ideal fit, this is perfect for me. The dial is phenomenal, the movement is incredible and the accuracy is,without exception, the best I have seen in a wristwatch. I have the bracelet and the NATO strap version and have had no issues with the sapphire, case or quality. Need a bigger wrist to wear it I’m guessing
Watching this again, something strikes me immediately that I didn't notice the first time. I know that the Lunar Pilot is a big watch but Jody, at 0:33, that watch looks fine on you. It doesn't look overly big, it actually looks really good! If anyone agrees with me, give my comment a like.
I've had mine, from Jomashop, since Christmas 2018. I also have 7 inch wrists. Everything that Jody says, I said. Except that the looks, clarity and design won me over. Yes it's a jeans and t-shirt watch, but it get more comments than any of my other watches. I cannot see myself buying another watch this length, but it is a keeper.
I’ve worn mine at work, hunting, hiking for about a year on the leather basket weave strap and it’s held up incredibly well. Sapphire is incredibly tough and as long as you’re not wrenching under the hood of your car, I wouldn’t worry about it. Too big? I have 7” wrists and I wouldn’t go bigger but who cares? It’s the freakin Bulova moon watch! How many compliments have I got on this watch? I forgot how many. Besides my 50 yr old eyes can read the time better than smaller watches lol
This is one of my favorite watches and wears well on my 7.25" wrist. I think the Speedmaster is an iconic watch but this scratches the itch. A cracking review Jody!
I own one, as one of my 30 (mostly mechanical) watches. I have a regular sized wrist and it is NOT too large (I had this fear before I bought it). It looks small because the actual DIAL is not huge. rust me, you'll love it. This is an AMAZING watch. 10 seconds a year. VERY easy to read. Two straps. It's a winner.
Yup, this watch is a beautiful monster. I don’t know why Bulova made many of their reissues so large. I had their Stars and Stripes reissue that I tried so hard to love, but it turned out to be a monster on the wrist and I sold it. I recommend the Accutron II. I have one and it is in a much more reasonable case size, has the same VHF chronograph movement, and comes in for less money. Yeah, it’s not the “Space Watch” but this Bulova really is a homage to their own original, unlike the Speedy which retains its true provenance to this day. Great review Jody and terrific shirt too.
Hey mate. Just re-watched this episode to try and fall in love again with my Bulova Lunar Pilot. Like you the straps supplied or any other that I tried just didn’t seem right and made the watch “look” too big! Well Strapify Aus has come to my rescue and I’ve put on the ultra quick release nato in the two tone grey. Problem solved! Watch now looks proportionate to my 7.5” (19cm) flat wrist and the watch now seems integrated to the strap rather than fighting it ! Anyway big shout out to Strapify Australia. Those guys are amazing. Cheers
Its a fabulous watch and a the price a total bargain. BUT for gorilla wrists only. What were they thinking? If its re-released in a smaller size i will buy one.
I think the idea is that the watch is a tool, so it doesn't matter if it overhangs on your wrist. I mean, in real life, sure, it's not a tool, but it is designed as one. Kind of like dive watches that will only be used for desk diving.
Owned one for 3 weeks. But it was HUGE.. just wore stupidly big (my wrist is no slouch either at 7.6 inches). Figure it was cheaper to engineer at this size
Guys! One for us!, in my case 8.2 inches or 22 cms wrist. Most of watches are for ballerina wrist people. Dan Henry made it simple with his 1970 model: in 40 and 44 mms and everyone happy.
@@RabidMortal1 Shape of wrist is important as well (is it wider and more flat, or more rounded...). I'm at 7.5" but can pull off a significant lug-to-lug. Either way, year, it's bigger, but a beautiful homage to their history on the moon.
I have had this in and out of my Amazon cart several times. Scared of the size on my 7 inch wrist, and this just about confirms it. Too bad as I love everything else about it :/
@@JustOneMoreWatch Same boat here, the pluses outweigh the negatives for me, how insanely popular would this have been with even a 46mm L2L, by the way if you get a chance do check out the Bulova 96B229 getting harder to source but that 262khz movement is divine, I have mine on a milanese and it looks the dogs.
I picked up the bracelet version in its first run. I set it and let it run uninterrupted for the first 3 years (not adjusting for DST). It ran +/- 0.0 s/d in that time! Yes, it's a little bigger than most of my collection, but that just helps with legibility since it's a 3-register watch. Oh, and I've no damage to the sapphire... in fact, I love that the tachymeter is protected by the crystal unlike the exposed aluminum bezels on the Speedmaster of yesteryear.
Like everyone else, I'd prefer that it was a bit smaller. However, the movement is very large and I think their desire to keep the watch case the overall shape of the original left us with this size. Mine is the bracelet version, my wrist is a bit bigger than Jody's, and I have no problem wearing it. A Speedmaster Pro was a gift to myself for retirement last year, and I prefer its size and case shape, but the Bulova sees its share of wrist time. Thanks for the review!
I love this lunar watch. I bought a sand blasted super engineer solid link bracelet for mine...and it makes it amazing...i have mine for 4 years...wear it a lot...the crystal is not scratched or cracked..its diamond hard
Jody, the name on the back is the area of the lunar surface that they landed on, not when they returned to Earth. I have just received mine at a discounted £244 and on my 7.5 inch wrist, it looks the cat's whiskers. I love it. Clean, crisp dial, stupid accurate and loads of provenance. PS. Love the videos.
I picked up the no-date version from Jomashop for $269.00. Yes, the lug to lug length is a little long. I still enjoy wearing mine even though my wrist is just under 7”. I love having a non-atomic watch that is always accurate. I miss having a date, but not having a date means it is always on the correct time, having such an accurate movement. Your review was fair and balanced, as I have come to expect.. please keep the great content coming!
@@Sean-ig2uf Thanks for letting me know but also kinda annoyed -- When I saw this I went to check and the strap version was already sold out on Amazon ($475 third party only), and the bracelet one was $303 which was amazing. Added to cart and went to confirm lug size and if I could swap a strap on it. 20 mins or so later I go to click buy, and it was already sold out too. I think both were only listed at that price for maybe an hour...and also at 2am in the morning here.
Well.... you convinced me Jody. I bought one (the Special Edition, on a bracelet). I've been thinking about it for some time and yes, I'd seen all the reviews. My advantage is a 7.6" wrist with a relatively flat profile. No overhang. The price was right, the size seems fine, its a beautiful, quality piece with a spectacular Lunar story and it has a (albeit, slightly reticent) recommendation from my favourite watch reviewer. What more can you ask ?
Just got one in Inverness at £449. I saw your video last year and was proper smitten. I love my first edition Oris Carlos Coste 2000m titanium beast, but this little (big) beauty just does it for me. an Omega speed master for a fraction of the price. Looking at getting it on a metal bracelet as I think it will take it up a notch. Lucky I have more than a 7.5inch wrist Joedy. Sits just nice for me. Highly recommend it.
Great review! I have the Bulova Lunar Pilot and have a larger wrist. It's perfect for me. However, I agree with others, wishing that Bulova would make this in a 40-42mm size. The issue isn't the dial, which only measures in at around 40mm, it's the case. Feels like a pillow case from the 60's and 70's. As for the crystal, the Lunar Has been my daily for over 3 years, and I've wackrd it many times. The crystal is still perfect. I owned the Speedmaster Professional for over 30 years, and I have to say that the Lunar Pilot is build every bit as well. My speedy needed over $800 in repairs, and I was lucky enough to catch the Speedmaster Professional balloon. I was originally going to buy another Speedmaster, but that's gone out the window. My Lunar Pilot scratched that itch. I have the bracelet model, and to me, it's the only one to buy. The bracelet is magnificent, every bit Rolex, Breitling and Omega quality. And it looks better...a cross between a President and circa 1971 Speedmaster bracelet. Every time I think about putting on a NATO or leather strap, I take one liiij look at that beautiful bracelet and stop myself in my tracks.
Great video Jody, thank you. I have one and I love it. Great legibility, superb accuracy. Not over expensive. Jody has covered it all-what more can be said. Thank you.
You should look into the astronaut/moonview Bulova that they also reissued back in 2015. I think the astronaut was used by the pilots on their test flights before the Apollo missions and the Saturn V rockets. Great video!
Picked one up on Prime Day for a good price. Yes, it is big, but I find it wears well on my 6.5" wrist. I think the issue is Bulovas high frequency movements are big to start. Look at their precisionist and Accutron II watches. I don't think any of them are below 41mm. I put mine on a watch steward elastic nylon. Got one of their original mishap straps and love the combo. Cheers
Yes Jody insanity is wanting this watch after all the reviews saying its to big. That being said I did it too. It didn't seem to fit very well but I loved the watch so much I went through several bands and zulu straps or NATO's so I finally found a watch braclet that I think makes it look good on my 7 1/4 inch wrist .Dont give up on it if ya love it. I'm sure you'll find something that will work if you really want to keep it.
Well... after watching every video on this watch, I did it anyhow. And on my 7" wrist, it wears just perfect. Don't be afraid of this watch!! Get the 96B251 version and wear on the leather strap loose with a butterfly clasp so it can move over the bone like a bracelet👌🏼
Bought this exact Bulova lunar pilot watch from jomashop months ago. Yes the size of the watch is a big problem for my small wrist, but I'll still keep it in my collection
I just received mine today. The 52 mm LtL is not an issue for me, the largest watch I own has a LtL of 60mm+. I've loved this watch since it was released and I'm really excited to finally get it on my wrist!
Thanks for the view… Watched it again as a sendoff from my Bulova lunar pilot. I have flipped it to a friend. The 52 mm lug to lug Was a dimension that was just not comfortable even on my 7 1/2 inch wrist. I purchased the watch because it has the ultra high precision quartz movement in it. It is horologically significant And I wish Bulova Would do that with all of the Chronograph’s. But they just keep putting a Rhonda quartz in them. If they make this watch with a 42/43 mm width with less than 50 mm lug to lug I would buy it again tomorrow
Wow! Lunar Pilot in my top 10 list! Love it soooo much. Tons of style and history for less then 400 greens. That 70th "cigarette autavia" style case with speedy-style dial - work together perfectly! And it is not too big for me. My "everyday beater" is 47mm radiomir-style brick.
I have a small wrist, Yes its big but wears very comfortable. The Time Piece is Beautiful and Very Accurate! Original Bulova Accutron had a tuning fork. This has a Tri-Tuning Fork. Very Legible. I Love This Time Piece! Thanks Bulova (now owned by Citizen) for an awesome Watch!! I think it is a watch for all Occasions. Elegant with or Leather Strap. I am a Klutz and have had no problems with the Crystal. I would buy another one!!
Props to the shirt!! God Bless Mr Haynes who passed away recently. Oh Snap those Jomas Shop Cretans....oh ok give me the bloody watch...LOL. Thanks again sir...looking forward to your review of the new Casio Duro Blue and Gold and Black Version. Cheers.
I have an original no-date version. It works on my 7 1/4” wrist. I like Bulova, collect vintage Bulova, so owning an “homage” to a Bulova original was a no brainier. However, I completely agree the MSRP was madness. I waited 3 years and the price came down about 40%. At that price, it was (and still is) a treat!
First, I bought a Casio Duro because of your video. Then, I bought the Casio A168. After that, the Heimdallr 6105 homage. Now I'm going to end up buying this. You're killing me, Jody. Haha.
Have one for my standard wrist. Yes, it's big! BUT being a chronometer, with this amazing history, an amazing facing, with two cool straps and at such low price! Do it! I bought it few yrs ago as it was issued and don't regret AT ALL!
Don't be afraid of the size, it wears smaller than a few of my 42mm divers, on my 17 cm wrist. What seems to help too, I have the bracelet version (different lug holes) and put it on a sleak strap. As for your strap quest, Jody, I think, after a few experiments, that it looks best on, indeed, an aftermarket black carbon fiber pattern or a thin Nato in silver-red-black: space going colors! With love from Belgium ;-)
I have had a Lunar Pilot for a few months, and I really like it. It fits me well (7 1/2 inch wrist). I got the version that only comes with the different nato-style strap, not the commemorative boxed model.
This watch broke all my rules for buying. I saw it in an IG post and just bought it without any research 3 years ago. It's the largest watch I own, and if I'm honest with myself (which I rarely am with this watch) it's too big for me. It has 6 or 7 straps of various comfort, the most of any of my watches. But I love it. I was worried I'd chip or break that box sapphire crystal, buy it's still as clean as the day I bought it. It's not going anywhere, unless Bulova releases a smaller model.
I imagine that this one, is long gone from your collection by now, Jody. I hear tell from other collectors, w/ the same "size issue," that the Bulova, supplied bracelet, actually helps to bring that long wings-span, down some, to a more manageable wearing experience. Just wondering if you had tried it, as such. Great review, as always. Cheers.....
Some of the best, most articulate and lucid reviews of watches on the net: spot on - that dial is to die for, beautiful and robust-looking watch which is just way too big for most people's wrist, a real shame.
Great review! This really is a remarkable package - a well made chronograph watch with probably the most accurate movement outside of a Grand Seiko (apart from radio control types) and a design with lunar heritage for less than£500 SRP. I paid £330 for the two strap version with the nice box from a high street dealer which is incredible value. Although I generally stick to mechanical watches I am obsessed with space watches and the Bulova UHF technology is genuinely impressive both for its accuracy and also the second hand movement. This is not disgraced by my Speedmaster Professional and nobody will feel short changed if they buy one. That said my Speedmaster Professional shows that sometimes buying an expensive watch is sensible. I bought it new about 27 years ago after my first trip at sea as an engineer after completing my cadetship. At the time it was over a months salary and a crazily extravagant purchase but considering it has given me almost three decades of utterly dependable service and enjoyment and that I'd buy another one if it was to be lost or stolen it's probably the most sensible purchasing decision I've made.
I have a Bulova Lunar Pilot. I Love it! Verity Accurate. I have a Rose Gold Bulova Curve with the Highly Accurate 262 kHz Movement. Awesome Time Pieces. But Bulova Is on the “big oversized Watch”. I also wish their Chronograph movements Recorded for more than 1 Hour. I love the Watch, would buy another one - I Love the dial. White on Black - fantastic legibility. The Lume is a beautiful hue. Gorgeous Time Piece! I love the 0.5 Recorder. Awesome Time Piece! I got the Special Version with Calendar. I Like both Straps!
Try the stainless steel brazalet it has a nice fit and the watch looks smaller. Marc at Long Island Watch has custom made after market ones for each model of the Lunar Pilot great quality at a fair price. Hope you enjoy your watch as much as I enjoy mine.
I recently bought the polished no date version. Absolutely happy with the watch. It looks very nice and also a watch with a story to tell. This watch is also a strap monster. Great review mate !
I have absolutely fallen off a cliff in love with mine. There is nothing I don't like. Some gripe about it being a battery operated quartz and the water resistance, I don't care. I have dive watches, automatics and solars. I bought this watch for the atomic era styling, the cultural and historical significance, and the stunning, crisp, handsome dial. Zero regrets.
I recently bought the steel bracelet pilot. To put a leather or nylon strap on it is a bit tricky due to the spring bar placement "you may say that's why it's on the steel bracelet", but it is nice to do a switch to leather / nylon in the cooler months here in Brisbane. What ever you buy be cautious of it due to the case lower ridge recess at the lugs as it will basically rip off the top skin of the band over a very short time. Curved 20mm spring bars will fix the issue but lower the strength of the bar. I'm sticking with my (Sailcloth nylon bonded leather) straight bar quick release strap as the tough Sailcloth is OK but with a visible mark out. 🖐️🖐️Please note the factory non bracelet(strap) model won't suit the bracelet one at all due to the solid end link machining. Great watch all the same. Cheers Johno,(Hodinkee member) Brisbane.:) 🌞
Like that watch. I'd probably wear it with a nato strap and possibly even a deployant strap which I usually have luck with. Nice video. The watch is on my list. More watchmakers should stick closer to 48mm lug to lug seems to be the sweet spot for most. Got a Panzera Time Master 45 Chrono on order and that's 54mm lug to lug.IDK we'll see.
Every time I hear Jody says “hello”, my wallet says “oh no!”
🤣🤣🤣🤑🤑🤑
Agreed, and I'm just glad that sometimes Jody tell us from the beginning that the watch reviewed will be to big for me, as in this case.
👍🤣🤣🤣
Exactly....hahaha...
Great review and recommendation there! Enjoy your retirement.
U just made my purchase clear
Yeah but when Red Dawn happens and the surgical nuke strike happens your watch will be rendered useless go with an automatic movement remember of watches valuable in a survival situation you can navigate with her that's something that you can't do if it's not working now Brainiac
Was wondering if this might work on my 7 1/4” wrist, this may have helped answer that. Thanks!
I think, over time, you will be glad that you held onto it, Jody!
the mistake everybody makes apart from having small wrists is not wearing it over a space suit
But were the lunar watches really this big back then, or did they just have appropriate straps for the space suits?
@@3rdstone1 He said in the review, they increased the size in the reissue. It's too big
@@jaex9617 That's the way to go.
@@jaex9617 You're completely right there.
The original that Dave Scott used is 43.3 case size so this one is just slightly bigger than the original.
I own one. Love it. Amazing accuracy, incredible value. It’s too big for me. Don’t care. I still rock it on a Bond NATO or brown leather. Great review as always.
What size is your wrist?
How accurate is it practically?
Just wear it on the sleeve of your spacesuit. Every real space nerd has his own spacesuit, right?
Only Rolex folk wear on the outside.
Only the filthy casuals don't.
@@stevek8829 Like their underwear.
This is the only watch channel worth watching because it shows realistic watches - I just don't want to see watches I can never afford. Good down to earth reviews too. Well done.
Seems like the main problem with the watch .... is Jody's wrist
🤣🤣
I suggest you review a Flic Flack Jody. It's gonna be perfect for you 😂😂
👌🤣😂
Or like, many of us.
In all seriousness the main problem is the strap width, which is too narrow for its case size. 22mm strap would have worked better (I have one)
I actually think it looks fine on your wrist when on the zulu strap. It's big, but it doesn't seem to overhang the sides of your wrist or anything.
Soon there will be 43mm version with same wuartz movement. So they pushef the limit.
This is quality comment
I’m going to try it Willard, I have a few waffle straps! Cheers and btw I too have a 6.75” wrist 👍
and dude, you are my favorite MALE watch channel guy. always straight to the point. the other male channels like teddy or that nice hair english chap with the excesses have too much fluff with the content.
I love it. I just got one and it fits great. I was worried it would be too big but it wears much smaller than its dimensions.
Bulova's Moony watch on my wrist right now! Love it to bits!
Spectacular t- shirt "last of the v8 interceptors"
I have a 7” wrist and wear this watch daily with no issues. The original prototype taken on Apollo 15 was 44mm, so this guy really isn’t all that oversized. It was originally designed for legibility in the darkness of the moon. I wear it on a black/gray bond NATO and it looks amazing.
L JN I thought original was more like 40mm?
This link explains the Geneve if your interested:
wornandwound.com/bulova-used-universal-geneve-get-moon-can-get-one-today/
And this link is particularly interesting cause it covers the issue and the original patent before the watch every went up for auction or the replica was created:
www.mybulova.com/forums/bulova-chronograph-flown-moon-apollo-15
Hope this answers some questions on this great replica for some
L JN Fantastic, thanks for the links!
Love this watch, and definitely the most accurate in my collection. Plenty of watch for the price, and nice bit of history to go with it. 👍
They'd sell a zillion of these if they reduced the size.
Scott Cameron and a auto
The proportions are a bit odd. The strap really needs to be 22mm I feel to match the case dimensions. I have one and like it a lot.
Make it a 42mm and I'll buy immediately
@@STAMPA_ an auto will cost $2k+ 😅
100% I'd hand over my CC right now if it was smaller. I'd prefer
I totally agree, I have really big wrists and appreciate a bigger watch. This watch fits like a 40-42mm on my wrist which is perfect.
I can’t stand small watches, 45 mm is the perfect size for me.
Just saying, it's an obvious but catchy idea... haha)
Damn that's an awesome watch. My plan to buy list keeps growing. Just one hundred more watch.
I just received one of these from my wife, I’m completely in love with it, fits my 7.75 inch wrist perfectly! And thanks for the great review.
I have it on a bracelet. It has a really nice, high quality bracelet. Beautiful watch, one of my favorites !
Yeah, kinda big, but loving mine !
Almost a daily
Surely a bang for the bucks
@@RabidMortal1 idk, it actually looks smaller on the wrist than my 42mm diver. Due to slick design. Or I'm just used to wear chunky watches 8)
Too bad as I love everything else about it :/
I'm going to persevere, but I wish it was smaller...... 😞

Ive always liked Bulova watches. My favs are the Grammy watches and the Precisionist. Great watches

Well.... you convinced me Jody.
Was wearing this today....its a damn big watch. But I love everything about it.
I was gifted one today for Christmas. I love it!
Oooh a watch for the big boys. I like it
Props to the shirt!!
Haha.
As you saw and reacted to in AAWF, I just got one, and it fits awesome on my 8 ish inch wrist, lugs don't overhang at all ❤
Looks great on your wrist! Anything 46 and under generally looks good on most wrists in my opinion, but to each his own.
I just bought one on your recommendation not too big for my wrist and I think it's absolutely fabulous and I love your work
Good stuff mate! Great to hear that.
Thanks for the kind words mate!
The ticking small second is a miss on a 262kHz movement, the 96B229 is the one UHF to get :)
The 96A102 is also nice, a non-UHF movement but mine’s only two seconds adrift since January.
I thought it was however it gives the watch some soul I enjoy it now
Try the stainless steel brazalet it has a nice fit and the watch looks smaller. Marc at Long Island Watch has custom made after market ones for each model of the Lunar Pilot great quality at a fair price. Hope you enjoy your watch as much as I enjoy mine.
HUGE!!!! i'm a fan of the story and the history.
I recently bought the polished no date version. Absolutely happy with the watch. It looks very nice and also a watch with a story to tell. This watch is also a strap monster. Great review mate !
if they made this 40 to 42mm this watch would sell very good.
It does sell very good
This watch sells very well and is often sold out. Everyone has different sized wrists
This is the coolest shirt you've ever worn. Nice
That shirt is AMAZING!!!
