You wanna hear a joke? A guy goes into a Rolex AD for an Explorer. AD gives him an Air-King, takes all his money, and the guy is actually happy about it.
I bought my grail watch 2024 two weeks ago: Citizen Promaster Eco-Drive Unite With Blue for under 300 Euros. Love it deeply. Your Tudor is great, Jody.
This was one I absolutely had to have as well, was a new watch collector, phenomenal watch. Threw mine on a stainless bracelet from Long Island Watch for $60. 👌🏼 At over 20+ Watches in my collection it barely gets any wrist time though. I’ve been rocking my Casio Green F-91W, and Pagani Design AirKing.
I love Citizens, got the promaster eco drive and the promaster Fugu auto. The value is next level. The Promasters and the Seiko Alpinist are my grails....
Another Eco-Drive grail here (Xmas...) BM8560 -- field style, not unlike the Ranger. Ti/sapphire, surprised it's not reviewed yet Jody! Canny buying on your Ranger though.

I’ll be looking for the Erebus equivalent. Perhaps a grade 2 titanium & solar Quartz with gilt indices to set itself apart from Tudor and Rolex. Thanks for the review Jody.
I just bought one and I completely love it. After I added it to my meagre (6 watch) collection, I actually feel like I don’t need anymore. I am putting cash away for something a bit special for my 50th in 5 years though.
Congratulations! I picked up a Ranger 6 months ago and I'm wearing it right now! I absolutely love it. It's exactly as you said - a perfect daily watch in stealth mode. No bling, no nonsense, and also no compromises. A wonderful watch for a chill, casual dad.
I was in a fortunate position to buy this when it came out and I have loved wearing it ever since. It is my go to watch, I love the simplicity of the dial backed by the BB movement and at a good price too.
Your video struck a chord with me. About six months ago I bought a "preowned" Tudor Pelagos 39 in titanium for $3200. There wasn't a scratch on it so I'm pretty sure it was brand new. I wear it every day and love it! Very similar to what you did.
I am now feeling very old as I remember when Airking was the cheap, non-chronometer watch that no one wanted. When did it all change ? Maybe at the same time as the Milgauss becoming a sought after watch... I went even further on the "economy Explorerish route" and just opted for the Addiesdive 36mm VH31 quartz for the vintage Explorer vibe. This left loads of free cash for the Watchdives WD1950S with the applied indices for the more modern look. These 2 watches have completely scratched the Roly watch itch for me and I can heartily recommend them to everyone. Happy 2025 to all.
I have the Addiesdive 36mm VH31 "Vintage Explorer." It's a beautiful watch, but after the honeymoon period I just don't seem to wear it. It was a real wake-up call for me that I should probably not be dreaming about expensive field watches with printed dials. @@HappyGuy11 That is an excellent description of the way I have become with all the watches that I yearned for. I am surprised at how happy I am with my Aliexpress quartz offerings and am not on any wait lists anymore. Hope you find your dream watch one day.
Congrats, its a gorgeous piece. Fun fact about the Ranger, the bracelet is interchangeable with the BB58. So if the fake rivets bother you, you can just do a quick swap
In October, I was flying from Heathrow back to the USA. I stopped in the Rolex boutique, and they had an Explorer for sale on the spot. No prior history and no wait list. I bought it on the spot.
I own this watch. And it’s got more comments than others I own. Great review. I bought mine new in the UK at £2460. It’s now £2980 retail. Great watch.
A top purchase! I tried the Ranger shortly after the release and was close to making a purchase but I already had other watches that were already covering this area including an older BB36 smiley black dial that I really like. I really didn't want to move that one on and could not justify them both. Oddly I still can't get that brief Ranger experience out of my head as it is such a cracking watch. Maybe one day I can justify it. Congratulations on adopting the Ranger.
Seems like your reason for buying the Ranger is related to the relative lack of success of the model. Appears to be aimed at people who really want an Explorer but are either unwilling or unable to pay for one. Hope you enjoy it but I suspect it's going to be following the intermittently popular Oris out of the collection to pay for next years "Grail", perhaps another Oris.
Lume is so overrated. That watch, if it didn't have lume, would be white indices on a black dial. It would have the look the Sinn accomplishes, which is praised for how clean it looks. Instead, it has that different hue which is not a design choice but a utility choice for a non-utility watch. So many watches are made worse because people just go "well why isn't there lume?" and the companies appease this perspective.
I'm so envious! The Ranger is also my grail watch for 2025 and I hope to be able to save up for one soon. Congratulations and wear it in good health Jody!
love the ranger- great choice and I think a very good alternative to the rolex explorer. one day I may have the money for the Tudor but for now I can live with my pagani homage which is Ok but does have a surprisingly lovely gloss black dial. Enjoy the watch Jody Butt don’t take any stick about the hands!
Hello Jody, I understand your desire for the Ranger. I have a late 1960s Ranger I bought second hand in a pawn shop on Pitt Street Sydney in the mid 1990s for $260, as you could back then. I’m not inclined to sell it any time. Cheers.
Yes, I totally agree with your choice, a beautiful looking watch and in dream land, I think I would get one of those too, sadly back here on earth I couldn't justify a watch costing more than my car.
What a great price!! I really love the look of this one. Also when you’re doing the dimensions I think you should also add the size of the dial opening as well. I think that would really help us to get a feel of how big the watch would wear on our wrists.
I can't tell you how many times I've almost pulled the trigger on the Ranger. Some say it's too simple but I think its beauty IS its simplicity. I think it's nearly the perfect tool watch. Congrats!!!
While I have always like the look of the ranger, something has always felt off to me. But you mentioned it and I mediately discovered what I struggled with. It is the fact that the watch does not have applied indices. If you can get over that though it is certainly a beautiful watch. Enjoy!
An absolutely fantastic way to start the new year! I considered this, but wasn't keen on the head and tail curves of the 6 & 9, so bought a Smiths Everest
Congratulations on the Ranger. I don’t think you can go wrong with a Tudor. I plan on retiring in a couple of years so I’ll have to start looking for a grail soon.
Very nice video, and the difference between the Explorer clasp and the Ranger is worth mentioning as well. The Explorer has an old-style clasp, micro adjust is a bit finicky. So, pay more and get less as well! All the best with your new watch!
This is one of my favorite watches I own. It gets the most write time. I bought mine a couple of years before because it was such a deal and at the time I didn't really like it that much. It really grew on me fast.
I’m not quite to the point of wanting one, but I am liking it more and more the more I look at it. Seems you got a super solid watch for a good price, and I do like the anti-bling ethos.
Perfect anytime watch. It is so easy to wear. Along with my P39, it gets more wrist time than my Explorer 40. A future classic as most people bought the BB58 or GMT models.
I’m so glad you are in Aus, I relate a lot to your videos because of this, you have great taste in watches, congrats on your Tudor! My grail will be a vintage speedmaster or Rolex looking and some very old pieces for around 6k, but will have to wait for a promotion - I can’t justify that price at this stage
The 39 mm Ranger is just a very underestimated watch. I read all the negatives about it and almost believed them until I got one on my wrist. Now it's very hard to take off. Congrats!

But because it’s also a watch that’s received a LOT of constructive criticism, I’m curious to see what, if anything, Tudor does to improve it.

I love it. it looks like the smith everest first watch to conquer the summit of himalayas. a bit evasive but very affordable. finish wise this hits my criteria. definitely a watch to have.
Funnily enough, I've done exactly the same Jody 😢!!, My 2025 grail purchase was to be a Universal Genève White Shadow Ellipse style dress watch powered by a microrotored automatic in-house movement. On January 5th, I'd found a suitable candidate for sale, a week later I'd got the price down to the lower end of my budget so I had to pull the trigger or should I say my Mrs did as an early present for my birthday next month!! Congratulations on your purchase, it's one of the field watches I've considered but think the Rolex Explorer 2 GMT is more suited to my needs, personality and lifestyle.
I like the Ranger but my preference for a simple classic/classy watch is... The Tudor m91550-0005 1926 39mm steel case w/Opaline and blue dial. Of course the m79230b-0008 Black Bay Manufacture Calibre MT5602 (COSC) 41mm steel case Rivet steel bracelet(with blue bezel), is My Grail. Although the METAS Master Chronometer with the J style bracelet is VERY nice... I like the color combo of my Grail, as well as the history behind it(mix of old and new)... if they come out with the same color combo I will be in even more difficulty than I already am.
A friend runs an AD and says the Ranger is a top-seller. It just hits all the buttons. It looks great all the time. I've got my eye on a Nivada Grenchen Super Antarctic 369 for much the same reasons.
Perfect watch in it's own league, no date, no day, just lovely. Last year i got my own grail watch from an auction site and it's going to be a lifelong friendship
Excellent hour hand, great legibility, and nice to see a Tudor that does not have 10,000 lines of text on the dial. My major gripe is the absence of applied indices - all the more as the lume is pointless.
Congrats Jody - I should eventually sell some of mine and get one more expensive watch. It would be a BB58 or P39 (probably the former). Never any discounts in AUS but they throw some stuff in apparently. ps. no shortage of explorer knock offs, I've got the Cronos 36mm which scratches that itch.
I have a big soft spot for this watch. The watch that gives me pause for thought though is the Sinn 856. The Ranger is objectively a nicer watch with everything, but i like the crisp white indices and crown guards on the Sinn.
The best thing about the watch is actually seeing your enthusiasm towards it. Congratulations!

Perfect watch in it's own league, no date, no day, just lovely. Last year i got my own grail watch from an auction site and it's going to be a lifelong friendship
Congrats Jordy !
Congratulations! It is a much nicer looking watch than the Rolex Explorer in my opinion.
The side-by-side comparison reaffirms the attraction of the Explorer 😆
