The point of this song is that she is tossing aside the one person who knows and loves her, who grew up
with her because she doesn't need him now, she has become hard and mercenary. The key line to the whole
song is - now go and forget me forever - to escape poverty and pain she is throwing him overboard, forever.

Great song. Peter died a while back, but 20 odd years ago I did see him in concert. Nice reaction.

I discovered this song about 6 months ago- and I consider myself a student of 20th century pop music... This guy must've been a literary scholar with all the cultural references he throws around.

Thankyou Sarah.😊 I haven't heard that song in years. Beautiful, probing and much deeper than it sounds on first listen. 😮❤

One of my favourite songs of all time. Well done for finding this one. If you get a better copy of this, you will realise he KNOWS who she is, coz they come from the same place, and he is offering some understanding, and then he will leave her alone and not remind her of their past ever again. A really selfless love song. Really unique song in so many ways.

I saw him live in the 90's and he played this along with 'Frozen Orange Juice' another popular song he did worth checking out.

🎼I have to comment a second time, Sarah. This is a fine example of 6/8 time.
1-2-3-4-5-6. Emphasis on the 1 and 4 beat. It’s my favorite time signature to play in when I want to relax and just swirl. Thank you for this.☮️💟

He tells you in the last verse. They were both kids from the back streets of Naples. Scugnizzi in Italian

Sometimes lambasted today, but fashion is a curious thing about the acoustic song. The observation is that it's not just about what you buy and what you have - even more at odds with culture today than it was then.

listen to the words, it was written all about the film star Sophia Loren.

Was that real venom in his voice at the end?
