ABBA became known after winning a popular music contest in Europe in 1974 with a song called 'Waterloo'. The group of four represnted their native country of Sweden and competed against other European countries. It would be ABBA's only Number one hit in the US. ABBA's genre is well known as EuroPop/Disco.
In the early 70s everything in Sweden was so red in a political way and the music was no acception! Music wasn't supposed to be polish or popular but rather political. Well ABBA broke all the taboos cause they said they wanted to became huge, rich and famous! When they arrived at the scene so to speak they filled a glap in Swedish music. There's a urban legend here that says back then it was concidered a band thing to like ABBA. It has been debunked cause every album did sell either gold or platinum here.
The 70's were a trip, I was too young to experience it. Disco era is legendary, I wish I could have been an adult back then lol. Love the type of music you react to, it's so diverse. 😊
ABBA is one of the most successful groups of all time. Yes it is considered Pop music. In the 70s they were huge in many countries. But not quite so much in the US where they were derided as Bubble Gum Pop. However they have stood the test of time. They originally stopped recording as a group in the early 80s. But only a few years ago they came out with a new album after 40 years! And they still have it. Their song catalog is vast and wonderful. Definitely a rabbit hole you should go down.
Before they came together, the individual members of ABBA were already very popular in Sweden. Their worldwide break came with the Eurovision Song Contest from Brighton with Waterloo. Most of the songs were composed by Benny and Bjorn, who provided complex accompaniments. The singing contains many harmonies in thirds, which makes the distinct ABBA vocal lines. The rhythm section, along with the piano, provides the forward movement in this performance. They were one of the first bands to make videos to publicise their songs. From the late 70s to early 90s they dominated pop music.
Hi Mia, glad you got to enjoy this song! I remember this song playing at the RollerRinks in the 90s. It has a great rhythm like you are dancing to. They are a fantastic band, I encourage you to check out some of their other songs, The Winner Takes All, Fernando, & Mama Mia.
Singer of Metallica, James Hetfield, has gone on record saying that he loves to sing with his family in the car when driving from place to place. That as a family they love listening to and singing along to ABBA, especially Dancing Queen♥️
Michael Amott of Arch Enemy turned me onto Bossa Nova musicians like Stan Getz from a post he made once. I think he actually said once he doesn't listen to a lot of metal in his downtime. Understandable.
@@byerenny Brian Downey was drummer in a rock band called Thin Lizzy. He has said that the band's leader told him to listen to all kind of music to get as much inspiration as possible.
Never even HEARD of ABBA? Even for a 20 something that's stunning. Just a few years ago there was a Broadway play based on their music, and even more recently a movie. There are commercials with their music etc. How are you possibly that insulated from pop culture that you would not even hear a song on the radio or at a party or just hear people talk about them? Wow.
It is surprising when people have never heard of artists like the Beatles or Elvis but I think we all need to think back to when we were in our 20s. I’m sure there were some icons in music or film that we had never heard of either which older people would have been surprised about. I can see how one her age has not heard of ABBA. ABBA is only played on oldies stations and younger people don’t listen to the radio anymore anyway. Their parents may not be ABBA fans so may not have played them at home. It’s not like ABBA is all over TV either. They may have heard of Mamma Mia but hace no idea what it is. When I was growing up I only really knew current music or whatever albums my mom had. As I got older I started to discover all kinds of music.
(At least here in Europe) Abba is panGenerational and get played anytime, some can still hear them anywhere.Just put on "Dancing Queen" or "Gimme"x3 when a party is watered down and the dance floor gets packed.
ABBA is not only the greatest musical act ever to come from Sweden, but one of the best male/female groups of all time. There are so many great songs. And their songs always lift the spirits and elevate one's mood. Dancing Queen is their signature tune. But there are so many others. I will list only a few of them. Waterloo, Mamma Mia, Take a Chance on Me, Money, Money, Money, The Winner Takes It All, SOS, I Have a Dream.
Its a damn great song. No doubt. The drum beat is really good. The piano and strings, vocals are excellent. Bridge is perfect and the chorus is legendary.
A number of years ago, they were offered one billion dollars to reunite for a one-time concert. They turned it down. Only to reunite years later (a few years ago) to do holographic concert appearances. They have consistently been one of the biggest bands throughout their existence.
ABBA was one of the best-selling music artists in history, selling between 150-385 million records worldwide. The Swedish pop group is the best-selling band from continental Europe and the best-selling Swedish band of all time with hit after hit. They were Sweden's most successful export of the 70s. Bigger than Volvo cars and IKEA.
Hey Mia. The term you are searching for is "belting". Belting is a singing technique that involves using the chest voice to produce a powerful, resonant sound. It's often described as a "high chest voice" or "mixed voice", but it's actually a descriptive term for a specific way of using the vocal registers. Belting is a contemporary technique that's used in many genres, including pop, rock, jazz, and folk. It's most commonly associated with musical theater, where Broadway singers project their voices to fill large venues. Belting is different from classical singing techniques, which can also produce a powerful sound. Belting is derived from speech, and it can be heard well even when it's not amplified.
If you're trying to date the song, it hit the Billboard Top 40 on the week of January 22, 1977. It was in the Top 40 for fifteen weeks, and it peaked at #1 for one week (the 458th #1 hit of the Rock Era, for those of you who are keeping count).

Hi Mia. The 80's were fun. We used to go to the clubs here in NY and danced all night from Thursday evening till Sunday in the morning. We would go to a club then to the after hours club then to the after after hours club. All the Girls were Dancing Queens and some of the Guys too 😀There was never a time like this and there will never be again. You look like someone that WOULD HAVE had a lot of fun in the clubs back then 💃🕺
great song and reaction. these were 2 married couples from Sweden. the Auburn haired girl was married to the pianist and the blonde haired girl was married to the guitarist. the name ABBA comes from the initials of their first names Agnetha blonde girl Bjorn guitarist Benny pianist Ani-Frid aka Frida Auburn haired girl the guys wrote all their songs and played many instruments. the girls both had incredible voices but together they harmonized like no one else. even still today. they have sold over 400 million records. Try "Fernando" "Chiquitita" and so many more. take care
ABBA has many great songs. They were a big part of the disco era. Some of their best songs are “Mama Mia, S.O.S., Take a Chance, Waterloo, Gimme Gimme Gimme, and Knowing Me Knowing You.” You should also check out some Earth, Wind, and Fire. Some KC and the Sunshine Band and some Kool and the Gang if you enjoyed this group.
In the early morning hours on a bicycle, the fresh country air on my face between tulips and windmills In Holland and the little radio was playing ABBA songs, a nice memory of last year's holiday. 🌺
I never heard of this band until late either. I grew up on 70's Soul and older so this pop stuff is still sort of new to me. Ha. "Gimme Gimme" is a dancing banger and also inspired Madonna "Hung Up"which covers 2 birds with one stone. ❤❤
Rock critics and more than a few bands were mean to ABBA, but as kids we loved them, they never pretended to be a rock n roll band, they were pure, joyful pop music, they had so many great songs.
I think the main reason why most people are not on the dancefloor is because they are addicted to their stupid phones 🙂 but this is the perfect birthday song for women!
Yes, Abba is considered Pop, but they also made several songs with with much Disco influences. Abba has a whole string of hits, just to mention three: The winner takes it all, Mamma mia, and SOS. My personal favorites wasn't their biggest hits but nevertheless Pop masterpieces - The day before you came, When I kissed the teacher and One of us.
Growing up in Mexico, the parties we went to, everyone would dance! I was a teen in the early 80s but this music was still playing, along with newer stuff, of course. Wonderful times!
ABBA from Sweden, I think its Disco and they were a decade before of their time when it came to the music. ABBA stands for the first letter of their names, Agnefrid ( Brown hair ), Björn ( Piano ), Benny ( Guitar ) and Agneta ( Blond ). One of the biggest groups ever and most of their songs are big hits. Hits like Waterloo, Supertrouper, The Winner Takes It All, Mamma Mia ( two movies make with that name ), Ring Ring, When I Kisses the Teacher..... jus to name a few.
These guys were out in the mid 70s. I was a little kid then. Dancing was everything in the 70s and 80s. Thats how us dudes got our Mack on. 😂😂 alot of young girls loved this. They all felt like it was bout them.
In the late19 70's, Disco was king, I had just turned eighteen fresh out of high and enlisted in the Army, Stationed in Germany, we loved this stuff, music of my youth
Came to the attention of the world in the 1974 Eurovision song contest (held in the UK that year)- winning with the track Waterloo, so many other great tracks: S.O.S., Knowing Me Knowing You, Chiquitita, Thank You for the Music, Name of the Game, Take a Chance on Me, Winner Takes it All.
The younger generation dont listen to music or the radio. It might be a popular hit but it isnt as big now as it was then. Even the movie has been out over 10 years ago. Younger people hear music in video games and maybe movies but it isnt well known to them. A lot dont know the Beatles never mind ABBA. I was surprised to discover that ABBA didn't sell many records in America anyway. Its just one of those bands that some might here but many have not. I dont see this girl as one who is waiting for new music to come out. She hears whats in videos or shows she might watch. She isnt interested in 50 year old songs. Us older people have to understand this. Music to young people doesn't mean anything but background noise. They listen to music from video games. It doesn't mean the same to them as it does us.
@@TheEWFX29 "music to young people doesn't mean anything but background noise" Such a wise observation.Don't know the level of this progress right now but i feel there's some amount of youngsters in many countries who view music the way u so well described.Kinda "faceless" way imo.We deffinately got connected to music in a different way back then that's true one way or another.
@alexioverdo5225 Its the truth. I'm talking her and US youth. She seems to be from the US and probably doesn't spend time researching and looking for new music. I am astounded that most if not all young people I know dont really know the Beatles except as a old band that was popular. But beyond that dont know what Sgt Peppers is or She Loves You. They dont have music as an important hobby.
"Let me know if they had any other songs that were a big hit...." OK! Here are 22 of their best originals...most of which were later woven into the internationally-acclaimed stage show (Broadway, Vegas, London, etc.) and two movies bearing the name "Mamma Mia...." Chiquitita Does Your Mother Know Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight) Head over Heels Hey, Hey Helen Honey, Honey I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do I Have a Dream Knowing Me, Knowing You Lay All Your Love on Me Mamma Mia Man in the Middle Money, Money, Money One of Us SOS Super Trouper Take a Chance on Me Thank You for the Music The Name of the Game The Winner Takes It All Voulez-Vous Waterloo
They really knew how to write music to dance to back then. Now they just think they can throw a heavy beat on any song and make it danceable, but they all just sound the same now.
You could watch the 3 films that have been done about ABBA & their music. First was ABBA - The Movie which follows them during a concert tour of Australia. A storyline of an Australian DJ trying to get an interview is woven in.Then there is Mamma Mia & Mamma Mia 2 which are musicals using their music.
The disco answer to Fleetwood Mac: great songs, lovely ladies, and--- *two couples* bringin' their internal drama. :D U should check out "Take a Chance on Me," "SOS," "Waterloo," and anything else off the "Gold" album. That said--- yeah, I gotta 2nd the Blondie comment. :) Pretty much a natural playlist fit...

Speaking of the 70’s that is when the greatest rock band in history LED ZEPPELIN was selling out stadiums. Just your daily reminder! 😂 I hope I get a shoutout when you finally listen to them and realize how much you love them! ABBA is a disco band ❤

Some of the songs you should listen to --> The Winner Takes it All, Chiquitita, Thank You for the Music, The Name of the Game, Take a Chance on Me, When all is Said and done, The Day Before You Came and 25 more great songs
The band leader supposedly searched everywhere to recruit the very best 2 female singers. It worked apparently....they sound fantastic! They all ended up getting married lol 😆
I was in Germany in Army in 1976-80 it was only disco ..I had like 5” heels 👢(6’2”+5”)and everything you would need to be in Saturday Night Fever! But I was always a ZZ Top blue Jean blues, type. Lots of love
"Dancing Queen" (1976) was way before Freddie Krueger ("Nightmare On Elm Street"), which came out in 1984. Amazingly, this was Abba's only number one hit on the BIllboard Hot 100 chart.
Here's an interesting fact about ABBA. They were a pop group from Sweden and this was one of their first big international hits. At the time they were singing it from rote memory because they hadn't learned English yet.
ABBA has been pronounced AH-ba and sometimes Ab-ba. It is always spelled by using all capitals because the group's name comes from the first initials of the members. Agnetha Faltskog, Bjorn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid Lyngstadt. The names reflect the fact that the group comes from Sweden.
Great reaction! They pronounce their name “AHH-buh”. Their names are from the first initials of each of their names- Ani, Benny, Bjorn, and Agnetha. They were two couples that eventually married. Another great song of theirs to react to is Take a Chance on Me.
Dancing Queen came out in 1976. It was on their album “Arrival”. But seriously, welcome to ABBA! Listen to all of their songs you won’t be disappointed!

How is it possible that you haven't heard of ABBA? They were one of the greatest musical phenomena of the 20th century.
simple, this girl is only in her mid 20's. she was' ent even born. during abba's. peak times
(At least here in Europe) Abba is panGenerational and get played anytime, some can still hear them anywhere.Just put on "Dancing Queen" or "Gimme"x3 when a party is watered down and the dance floor gets packed.
this is why i laff when people say "This band will be known forever"!!!!
@@David-j9h9g it has been known for 50+ years.far longer than most of the modern day bands will be
@@David-j9h9g These reactors are faking it, these bands will be known forever.
Pure undiluted POP music. And the guilty pleasure of many rock fans .
*secret* guilty pleasure
Dancing Queen is the happiest song in the world
It really is. A lot of their songs just bring joy. More great happy songs than any group in history.
Its a damn great song. No doubt. The drum beat is really good. The piano and strings, vocals are excellent. Bridge is perfect and the chorus is legendary.
Thank you! Other great songs from ABBA:
• Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)
• Fernando
• Take a Chance on Me
• The Winner Takes It all
A number of years ago, they were offered one billion dollars to reunite for a one-time concert.
ABBA is iconic so many big hits
ABBA is my guilty pleasure lol. You gotta hear The winner takes it all" "Chiquitita" "Mama Mia" and "Fernando "
ABBA are Pop Royalty. ❤
And our host had never heard of them. Sigh.
@@scottski51 I also wondered.I guess that the video's nearly 1b views is a certain challenge for many utube reactors to try it.
Mia,I think you are a Dancing Queen too😁❤....Abba was one of my first fav Bands and as a young boy I was so in love with Agnetha🤣....you should check more Abba they have so many Hits👍
You look like someone that WOULD HAVE had a lot of fun in the clubs back then 💃🕺
great song and reaction. these were 2 married couples from Sweden. the Auburn haired girl was married to the pianist and the blonde haired girl was married to the guitarist. the name ABBA comes from the initials of their first names
Agnetha blonde girl
Bjorn guitarist
Benny pianist
Ani-Frid aka Frida Auburn haired girl
the guys wrote all their songs and played many instruments. the girls both had incredible voices but together they harmonized like no one else. even still today. they have sold over 400 million records.
I was a high school rocker in the late 70s, and openly admitted I like ABBA music.
Especially Agnetha (blonde)😍😋😈
In the early morning hours on a bicycle, the fresh country air on my face between tulips and windmills In Holland and the little radio was playing ABBA songs, a nice memory of last year's holiday. 🌺
I never heard of this band until late either. I grew up on 70's Soul and older so this pop stuff is still sort of new to me. Ha. "Gimme Gimme" is a dancing banger and also inspired Madonna "Hung Up"which covers 2 birds with one stone. ❤❤
All of there songs are hits there hole catalog are pure hits. Thanks for youre reaction. Love from Sweden ❤🇸🇪
Rock critics and more than a few bands were mean to ABBA, but as kids we loved them, they never pretended to be a rock n roll band, they were pure, joyful pop music, they had so many great songs.
ABBA will make you feel things, that's for sure
I think the main reason why most people are not on the dancefloor is because they are addicted to their stupid phones 🙂
but this is the perfect birthday song for women!
Wonderful times!
loved spending Saturday nights at our skating rink skating to this group's music
If you have ever watched the "Mama Mia" movies they feature ABBA's songs.
Need to listen to Blondie heart of glass
And Pat Benatar Promises in the Dark, Love is a Battlefield, and Too Little Too Late
ABBA was HUGE during the 70s and early 80s.
ABBA are so good 👍
ABBA from Sweden, I think its Disco and they were a decade before of their time when it came to the music.
Only a few of their songs qualify as disco... Dancing Queen being one of them.
Only 10 songs were disco oriented from over 100 songs they had recorded. And those 10 were also great btw.
No Autotune,mylady all talent
These guys were out in the mid 70s. I was a little kid then. Dancing was everything in the 70s and 80s. Thats how us dudes got our Mack on. 😂😂 alot of young girls loved this. They all felt like it was bout them.
In the late19 70's, Disco was king, I had just turned eighteen fresh out of high and enlisted in the Army,
Stationed in Germany, we loved this stuff, music of my youth
Came to the attention of the world in the 1974 Eurovision song contest (held in the UK that year)- winning with the track Waterloo, so many other great tracks: S.O.S., Knowing Me Knowing You, Chiquitita, Thank You for the Music, Name of the Game, Take a Chance on Me, Winner Takes it All.
Yay 26,000 that’s my girl congratulations babe❤
How to tell when somebody is fibbing for clicks: “ I’ve never heard of ABBA”. “ I’ve never heard dancing Queen.” ;-)
@@TheEWFX29 "music to young people doesn't mean anything but background noise"
Such a wise observation.Don't know the level of this progress right now but i feel there's some amount of youngsters in many countries who view music the way u so well described.Kinda "faceless" way imo.We deffinately got connected to music in a different way back then that's true one way or another.
Here are 22 of their best originals...most of which were later woven into the internationally-acclaimed stage show (Broadway, Vegas, London, etc.) and two movies bearing the name "Mamma Mia...."
Chiquitita

Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)

I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do
I Have a Dream

SOS
Super Trouper
Take a Chance on Me
Thank You for the Music
The Name of the Game
The Winner Takes It All
Voulez-Vous
Waterloo
I only stared at two things the entire video: Agnetha and Frida.
Ive heard this song 100,000 times since I was a kid in the 70's. For some crazy reason I decided to watch this reaction video.
They really knew how to write music to dance to back then. Now they just think they can throw a heavy beat on any song and make it danceable, but they all just sound the same now.
You have been truly blessed!
I have 3 sister's who listen to them all the time I also fell in love with them!✌😊
Still the Greatest 😊
We did dance to this, but what we really did a lot more back in the day was roller skate to this!!!
ABBA was One of the most successful bands in the world at the time, I'm not exaggerating, They were big,
Good old school stuff cutie
Keep up the amazing reactions
The disco answer to Fleetwood Mac: great songs, lovely ladies, and--- *two couples* bringin' their internal drama. :D
U should check out "Take a Chance on Me," "SOS," "Waterloo," and anything else off the "Gold" album.
That said--- yeah, I gotta 2nd the Blondie comment. :) Pretty much a natural playlist fit...
Hello Mia, ABBA is a Legend. They have so many Hits here in Europe and all over the World. The Musical Mamma Mia is made of their Songs. They even had a Show in London, were all four of them are Holograms.
Please search for more of their Songs. You won´t regret it. Servus.😊😊😊
Strange you've never heard of it.This is a global classic and still out there, panGenerational, loudly popular from dancefloor clubs to weddings and even highly on tik tok.Good u know it now.
"Ah-bah" (ABBA) was a staple of '70's pop, with a lengthy list of danceable songs. Ear candy for the soul.
Four of the top five best-selling bands are British. The other one is Abba.
Worldwide not in the USA. They only have one album that went multi-platinum in America. It was a greatest hits package that came out in the early 1990's.
Hi Mia great reaction..how can you not like ABBA ..not that you dont ..ABBA pronounced ( Ah - Bah) is a great band..absolutely love them..they have great melodies..and the girls have some of the best harmonies ever..so many hits..your gonna love em.. and people were on roller skates..lol..and the guitarist had the Justin Bieber hair before Bieber..🤣😂..ok enjoy..take care..🙏

Girl, the music from the 70's was the best ever...
Hello Mia my love ❤ yes ABBA is the 70’s it was the height of Disco. They are from Sweden, I had a crush on the blonde when I was a kid. Speaking of the 70’s that is when the greatest rock band in history LED ZEPPELIN was selling out stadiums. Just your daily reminder! 😂
I hope I get a shoutout when you finally listen to them and realize how much you love them!
ABBA is a disco band ❤
8:45 The beginning of Disco(70s club/dance music) Loud, heavy, fast-paced drums and guitar, constant flow of sound to keep you moving.
This was one of my older sister's favorite band back in the 70's. I like some of there songs too. I suggest you react to " Take A Chance Of Me," and "Voulez-Vous."
Please please do more ABBA reactions Mia!...this is great..but there are so much more gold ABBA stuff out there!!
Loved your reaction Mia. ABBA music was for parties and dancing. Very talented and professional. Merry Christmas.
Welcome to ABBAs magic world :) A lot of fantastic songs to discover (and react to). Greetings from Sweden.
Some of the songs you should listen to --> The Winner Takes it All, Chiquitita, Thank You for the Music, The Name of the Game, Take a Chance on Me, When all is Said and done, The Day Before You Came and 25 more great songs
Agnetha and Anni-Frid, who sings in ABBA, are extremely good vocalists. no autotune at that time as most of the artists today uses.
The band leader supposedly searched everywhere to recruit the very best 2 female singers. It worked apparently....they sound fantastic! They all ended up getting married lol 😆
My favorite ABBA song... Dancing Quuen
I was in Germany in Army in 1976-80 it was only disco
..I had like 5” heels 👢(6’2”+5”)and everything you would need to be in Saturday Night Fever!
But I was always a ZZ Top blue Jean blues, type.
Lots of love
first letter of their names...at one time the highest selling group in the world and you never heard of them?
Another classic song love the video Mia stay motivated Dream big 1 mill on the way
"Dancing Queen" (1976) was way before Freddie Krueger ("Nightmare On Elm Street"), which came out in 1984. Amazingly, this was Abba's only number one hit on the BIllboard Hot 100 chart.
"Let me know if they had any other big hits." Gently laughing inside!
Here's an interesting fact about ABBA. They were a pop group from Sweden and this was one of their first big international hits. At the time they were singing it from rote memory because they hadn't learned English yet.
Good evening Ms Mia , another great reaction . ❤ Hope you had wonderful day
ABBA has been pronounced AH-ba and sometimes Ab-ba.
