Solsbury Hill is about getting out of a Psychiatric hospital. Who counter signed the section order to get PG locked in? PC, who then slides into the lead vocals for Genesis. Wanker.
@@paznewis107 Gabriel left Genesis to follow his own muse and also to be more present with his family - his wife had suffered a difficult birth during the recording of "Lamb Lies Down on Broadway," and the band showed some insensitivity towards Peter's need to be there for his wife while also trying to lead the direction of the album. Phil had no intentions of leading the band at that time. They held try-outs for numerous Peter Gabriel replacements - but not made the grade. Phil, having sung back up (and even lead on some songs) had to teach each prospect how to sing the material. Finally, the band members convinced Phil that he should just take on the lead vocals himself, since he was clearly the best choice. I see nothing in Peter's bio about being in an asylum. Perhaps you're thinking of Syd Barrett. If you're looking for a song about an asylum, check out Peter's "Lead a Normal Life."
Well according to Peter Gabriel's own words, "It's about being prepared to lose what you have for what you might get ... It's about letting go." Look it up wanker.
I love how quickly you compared Peter to Phil. I think we owe Phil's vocal style to the fact that he developed it by singing backing vocals for Peter, eventually stepping in to fill his spot in Genesis. Peter leaving was (in retrospect) a gift to music lovers. He went 'Big Time' and forced Phil to come out from behind his drums and shine bright.

Absolutely 👍🏻. I saw Peter in concert this past October in Austin. When he performed this song, the entire stage was flooded with red lights and the imagery of falling rain. It was a great concert & Peter still has his unique style and beautiful voice.
The first time I heard this song, I was a young adult, in a really dark place. A new mom, completely panicked, so deeply insecure, and utterly afraid. This song reached into my heart, somehow gave me a sliver of peace, and strength. It took me into a frame of mind, where I could feel the hopelessness and despair lift away. The tune , instruments, and beat seemed to say it's going to get to better, I was going to make it, I was going to be OK. To this day, it still does it for me. I was in a local grocery this weekend, when I heard it again, for the first time in long time. I smiled and started singing along, out loud, and I thought even now, in this time of uncertainty and manufactured fear, it grabbed my heart and said, it will be OK. The next thing I thought was , I need to share this Polo! I forgot by the time I got home, but I am so happy someone else tipped you to it. ❤🎉
That's not true. Solsbury Hill is close where Peter lived and he demonstated against aggricultural use of a huge area he always saw from up there. Maybe it's about both.
They have a tremendous catalog of music with Gabriel on lead vocals and Phil Collin’s on drums. This was the greatest iteration of Genesis imo. They wrote masterpieces

"In your eyes,"(live from secret world concert) is one I think you'll probably get a lot of requests for. Also there's "Sledgehammer," & "Steam," that were his big MTV hits.
Peter Gabriel's music is a hell of a rabbit hole to go down! Started with Genesis. Went solo and made some good music, was respected and successful but wasn't huge. Then he did the album "So". Great album, with loads of catchy tracks that was hugely successful. Sledgehammer, Red Rain, Big Time were all hits. However, I would recommend In Your Eyes and a duet he did with Kate Bush, Don't Give Up which is very moving. He then went on to make another amazing album called us, with elements of World music coming to the fore.
Absolutely superb choice Polo, I cherish this PG track, it helped me physiologically prepare for possible death leading up to a very serious, sudden and dangerous open heart surgery. " Eagle flew out of the night, had to listen, had no choice, son he said grab your things iv'e come to take you home". That was over 4 yrs ago now, this song still makes me emotional. Thanks for bringing-it POLO!
I love Peter Gabriel, this song is takes me back, you should check out another of his songs its called "Biko" Steven Biko was a South African activist during apartheid and was murdered by the SA Police, its the most moving song I've ever heard. Peter always plays it as his last song before he walks off stage, usually makes me cry.
This song reminds me of my nephew who is sadly passed. I used to tell him whenever I would go get him from wherever he was doing stuff he shouldn’t be doing “pack it up I have come to take you home “. I miss him ❤
I’m so very, very sorry for your loss. I have a nephew that I was very close to when he was young. He was smart, funny, quiet, kind, and had musical inclinations. And then, as he went through puberty, he would sometimes tell me that he felt very strange, like he wasn’t even a real person. And then came the schizophrenia, and now he’s homeless and trapped inside one of the worst mental illnesses imaginable. I miss him and worry about him, but my (born-again Christian) sister has washed her hands of him, which I find absolutely appalling. I think of him a great deal and hope he’s sticking around Santa Cruz, which is a really chill place. If it’s not too painful, I’d love to hear some of your favorite memories of him.
This song reminds me of my father. I went off to college and needed some growing up, he came and got me in a troubled time and I'll never forget it. He saved me. Godspeed pops!
All except for the "'Son,' he said..." measure, which sits on 4/4. That said, 7/4 has given us some of the best songs. "Outshined" springs to mind immediately.
I thought my BIL was going to wear out his Peter Gabriel concert dvds. When he died in his late 40's, we played them at his wake on a loop. "Son, grab your things I've come to take you home" was part of his eulogy. Excellent, profound music.
Peter Gabriel was Genesis' original lead singer and Phil Collins was the drummer. When Gabriel left, Collins stepped up to the mic, and Genesis got a lot more poppy over time, as indeed did Gabriel. The original Genesis was in the vanguard of early prog rock - their album Trick of the Tale (WELL worth a listen) had some of that prog magic while also being accessible - it was their first album without Gabriel, and Collins did a standout job, which then allowed them to extend their reach.
Gabriel was an original member of Genesis (1967) but Phil Collins and Steve Hackett joined in 1971. Prior to that, Anthony Phillips was the lead guitarist, and Chris Stewart (briefly) and John Silver were the drummers. My grad school roommate was a Genesis freak, and particularly fond of Phillips...
This song takes me back to a beautiful morning, many years ago, dancing in the sunlight with a sad little boy who was, in that perfect moment, happy. The sadness took him, when he became a young man. Now, he will never grow old. I will always remember him as that little boy, spinning and skipping, dancing and laughing, in the rays of streaming sunshine.
I went to 4 of his concerts and especially his first solo one (1977) featuring this hit. Gabriel was the soul of Genesis with his unique voice. He is a truly great artist and it would be too long here to describe his work . Some of my favorites are 'San Jancinto', 'Here Comes The Flood' and 'Biko'. His work with Genesis is even better than his solo career.
Solsbury Hill is just outside Bath, near Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios - it has an ancient Iron Age hill fort around the top and is a popular spot for walking. The city lights he refers to in the opening are those of Bath itself
Since you like this one I think - as others have said - you'll love his duet with Kate Bush, 'Don't Give up' - very powerful and these two distinct voices are absolutely angelic together.
This song always gets me teary. It keeps calling to me, telling me something I know I should be heeding. It gets stronger every time I hear it. I don't know when I'll have the courage to take the leap, but the urge keeps getting stronger. Home is not always where you came from; sometimes it's where you're headed. Where your soul has always yearned to reside.
Funny that he reminds you of Phil Collins because Peter was the lead singer of Genesis and Phil was the drummer. When Peter left the group Phil took over lead vocals. If you haven't listened to it before try Peter Gabriel "Don't Give Up" with Kate Bush. Also "In Your Eyes". Great reaction!
I saw Peter Gabriel perform this live in 1978 and it was an unforgettable concert. It was a tiny venue at the Bottom Line in New York City. I wish I had a Time Machine and could go back and experience it again. I was excited to be there but now I would be even more excited. This song conveys the emotion of taking a leap of change.
Absolutely love this song and this Era of his music. I'm a kid from the 70's and I was always told by my father who was a former Marine that this song was about war in the Korean and Vietnam War. Great play!!
I'm a big fan of Uncle Pete and this is one of my favorites. The lyrics are wonderful, but they're propelled by the "galloping" 7/4 time that resolves into 4/4 for a couple of bars in each choruses, which is somehow so satisfying.
Reminds you of Phil Collins? You've got that backwards. Phil Collins learned how to sing from doing backing vocals for Peter Gabriel in early Genesis. This song is from Peter's first solo album after he left Genesis.
Can't remember the last time I heard this 1977 GEM, LOVE IT, THANK YOU! I will add this to a playlist, after Dan Fogelberg's awareness of when roads diverge in his song Netherlands, which also came out in 1977 (the year I turned 19, and all of the music of college dorm mates was flooding my tastes and self discovery, The Moody Blues, Boston, Kansas, Styx, Peter Frampton, Hall and Oats... so many!)... For me, Solsbury Hill is a kindred spirit to Netherlands: "High on this mountain The clouds down below I'm feeling so strong and alive From this rocky perch I'll continue to search For the wind And the snow And the sky I want a lover I want some friends And I want to live in the sun And I want to do all the things that I never have done. Sunny bright mornings And pale moonlit nights Keep me from feeling alone Now, I'm learning to fly And this freedom is like Nothing that I've ever known I've seen the bottom And I've been on top But mostly I've lived in between And where do you go When you get to the end of your dream? Off in the nether lands I heard a sound Like the beating of heavenly wings And deep in my brain I can hear a refrain Of my soul as she rises and sings Anthems to glory and Anthems to love and Hymns filled with early delight Like the songs that the darkness Composes to worship the light. Once in a vision I came on some woods And stood at a fork in the road My choices were clear Yet I froze with the fear Of not knowing which way to go One road was simple Acceptance of life The other road offered sweet peace When I made my decision My vision became my release."
This is a song that just makes me happy and always puts me in a good mood after I listen to it!!! I can't say it ever had a meaning to me personally... it just makes me emotional in a wonderful way... it's just one of those songs for me and will never get sick of hearing it... ❤
From this same album, Peter Gabriel's song "Down the Dolce Vita" is a banger! A combination of orchestral music and smokin' electric guitar with a great vocal by Peter. Check it out!
I loved this when I was a teenager. It always made me think of my brother, who had basically vanished at this time. And then a decade later, as a young adult, Peter Gabriel walked into where I worked. (Affable, courteous guy.) I suddenly realised wherewas now living was more or less in walking distance (as in “going out walking” distance) of Solsbury Hill. But I didn’t walk; we drove with this cranked up on the car tape (!) deck, singing along..

So sorry for your loss -- it sounds like you have many fine memories to treasure.
For a pop song it's in the very unusual time signature of 7/4 time and yet it doesn't feel strange. This is the hit track that really kicked started Gabriel's solo career. This song reminds me of my father. I went off to college and needed some growing up, he came and got me in a troubled time and I'll never forget it. He saved me. Godspeed pops!
The Album So is a must listen Peter was my childhood
Peter Gabriel’s Shaking the Tree
YESSSS.....With Paula.
Written in 7/4, uniquely beautiful
All except for the "'Son' he said," measure, which sits on 4/4
All except for the "'Son,' he said..." measure, which sits on 4/4.
That said, 7/4 has given us some of the best songs. "Outshined" springs to mind immediately.
One of the best. You know it’s a very rare song, 7/4 timing
An amazing thing, musically, is that each verse there's new percusion coming in. That build up is insane..
I thought my BIL was going to wear out his Peter Gabriel concert dvds. When he died in his late 40's, we played them at his wake on a loop. "Son, grab your things I've come to take you home" was part of his eulogy. Excellent, profound music.
He did a brilliant live version of this later in his career with a full orchestra .
I love that version he performed on David Letterman.
🎉Don't Give up...with Kate Bush.....and Biko....legendary.
The entire Security album is a sonic experience. Must listen to the studio album.
There are so many great Peter Gabriel tunes, "Red Rain" "Shock the Monkey " "Games Without Frontiers" & the awesome "Biko" for Steve Biko.
"You can keep my things they've come to take me home".
Aaaah to realize what is important
A great artist a great song! Great reaction
Solsbury Hill is just outside Bath, near Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios - it has an ancient Iron Age hill fort around the top and is a popular spot for walking. The city lights he refers to in the opening are those of Bath itself
This song gives me goosebumps. His voice, the lyriks and the music itself. Wow!
Since you like this one I think - as others have said - you'll love his duet with Kate Bush, 'Don't Give up' - very powerful and these two distinct voices are absolutely angelic together.
Performed live, this, like in your eyes, is such a joyous song.
The mark of genius is when the lyrics are "...my heart going boom boom boom," and the drums don't go boom boom boom.
Excellent reaction / choice!! Some people have great taste .
Phil Collins was Peter's backing singer and drummer in the original Genesis.
If you like this feel of music you need some Steve Winwood - Higher Love.
Sooooooo excited fir you to jump down the Peter Gabriel rabbit hoke...such an amazing artist ❤
My Absolute Favorite tune by Peter Gabriel. HeartSong!
He’s a brilliant musician, a brilliant artist
Check out Peter's cuts like "In your eyes," "Shock the monkey," and "Sledgehammer"❤❤❤
Peter Gabriel has never left my music rotation.
Phil Collins sounds like Peter Gabriel, not the other way around.
This song is top tier on every level.
“If looks could kill they certainly would in games without frontiers, warrrr without tears.”
He can write goooood pop lyrics. Gooood storyteller ✅😴
Absolutely love this song and this Era of his music. I'm a kid from the 70's and I was always told by my father who was a former Marine that this song was about war in the Korean and Vietnam War. Great play!!
I LOVE this song. Also "In Your Eyes" is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. Ever.
Al Stewart, year of the cat, you'll love the musical arrangement ❤
I'm a big fan of Uncle Pete and this is one of my favorites. The lyrics are wonderful, but they're propelled by the "galloping" 7/4 time that resolves into 4/4 for a couple of bars in each choruses, which is somehow so satisfying.
Reminds you of Phil Collins? You've got that backwards. Phil Collins learned how to sing from doing backing vocals for Peter Gabriel in early Genesis. This song is from Peter's first solo album after he left Genesis.
In Your Eyes is one of my favorite Peter Gabriel pieces.
This one is 🔥
Loved this song from the first time I heard it when it came out.
For me, Solsbury Hill is a kindred spirit to Netherlands:
"High on this mountain
The clouds down below
I'm feeling so strong and alive
From this rocky perch
I'll continue to search
For the wind
And the snow
And the sky
I want a lover
I want some friends
And I want to live in the sun
And I want to do all the things that I
never have done.
Sunny bright mornings
And pale moonlit nights
Keep me from feeling alone
Now, I'm learning to fly
And this freedom is like
Nothing that I've ever known
I've seen the bottom
And I've been on top
But mostly I've lived in between
And where do you go
When you get to the end of
your dream?
Off in the nether lands
I heard a sound
Like the beating of heavenly wings
And deep in my brain
I can hear a refrain
Of my soul as she rises and sings
Anthems to glory and
Anthems to love and
Hymns filled with early delight
Like the songs that the darkness
Composes to worship the light.
Once in a vision
I came on some woods
And stood at a fork in the road
My choices were clear
Yet I froze with the fear
Of not knowing which way to go
One road was simple
Acceptance of life
The other road offered sweet peace
When I made my decision
My vision became my release."
This song always gives me chills. Thanks for checking it out.
This is a song that just makes me happy and always puts me in a good mood after I listen to it!!! I can't say it ever had a meaning to me personally... it just makes me emotional in a wonderful way... it's just one of those songs for me and will never get sick of hearing it... ❤
What this song means to me? This song means EVERYTHING to me...
I saw him in Madison Square Garden years ago, it was one of the best concerts I’ve ever attended.
Truly one of the greats, both the artist and the piece.
From this same album, Peter Gabriel's song "Down the Dolce Vita" is a banger! A combination of orchestral music and smokin' electric guitar with a great vocal by Peter. Check it out!
Anytime I hear him singing, I’m in a happy place.
Another favorite is his song Biko. Powerful stuff. Even if you don’t react, give it a listen.
One of my favorite songs. Something about it.
6:07 - honest to Buddha, I think this line, “and Liberty, she pirouette when I think I am free…” Is one of the most profound lines ever written.
