I hope this observation on how they sing helps you figure out how the voice works better, so you can learn how to make smart choices in your own voice.

Thanks for having me on your channel Sam! Always fun! ... I think this is by far one of my favorite videos we have talked about though! Excellent choice!
Mine too! Any time you feel like Pavarotti, analyze another please :)
Please react to Dimash again but both of you :)
6 hours ago I was your Atypical listener of music, but now, when I came up and out of the rabbit hole, I think I should be given an Honorary Doctorate!
But for real, after watching Sam, and now You and Sam, and your past relationship as student/teacher, and the respect you have for one another as colleagues, but more so, the passion for singing. As I and others have said, It is a great experience watching a pro discuss and educate another about their craft. It would be like me reacting to eating Ice Cream.! Bada Bum! PEACE!!
Learn so much from you guys!
they got on my nerves talking all over Pavarotti and James brown Why don`t they shut up.
What's crazy is that pavarroti had full blown cancer when this was recorded that's why he was sitting. He was Ill but he still killed it
I had been wondering why he chose to sit. That explains it.
He did this several times in the last few years of his life. Perhaps there were other health issues involved - Bless you for noticing this sweet Chloe
I didn't realise he had already been diagnosed, I assumed he was sitting down because of his weight
Makes you think eh. They were both dead within 3 years.
Yo must be musical teachers to knew a lot about powerful song. How about Sam cookie... Change gona come track
i could listen to professionals geek about their field all day
I feel you completely
100%
This is why UA-cam is the best.
Me too it’s so endearing and fun to watch!
Omg, same. That’s why I also love those WIRED videos where experts break down how stuff is in real life vs. in tv and movies. Especially the dialect coach guy. That dude is my favorite.
Once, James was criticized for screaming. His response? "I scream on key". Worked out pretty well.
And now we have an entire sub genre called "scremo" lol
Lmao that's pretty iconic.
Random Fact - The scream thing was started by Little Richard
@@user-hq6wy7mf3s James masters it.
I, too, always pronounce Pavarotti’s name with the utmost Italian diligence.
same lol
And Andrea Boccelli, Gherighou, and Bartoli. 😎
And, being Italian, I do respect you for that.
Same, but I do it for Chef Boyardee
Nate Green Chef boy r dee
"We have tenors who actually sound like tenors". I LOVE your videos. You + Pavorotti. = gold.
I have learned a lot from watching your videos, but I still sound like a cat being tortured
Put the right music behind it and any voice can work.
You and many of us too 😂🤣😭
HHAHAHHA SAMEE LMAO
I learn so much on music with Sam but when it’s time for me to sing I can’t even find the right note and I start thinking about my pronounciation and how I’m bad 😂 so for me it seems impossible but continue to enjoy listening Sam 😊 sorry I’m french 👏
I’m sure you sound lovely
Nothing like hearing Sam call Luciano Pavarotti 'Pav'
I saw Pavarotti live about 24 years ago when I was in high school. He was amazing.
I was so surprised when you pointed out that they were singing the same notes because the qualities of their voices are so different from each other, it didnt sound the same to me at all! Then again, I’m not known for my pitch or hearing so this may not have surprised anyone but me 😂😂😂
Timbre is huge for pitch perception !
@@SamJohnsonVoice it's the same with the difference between male and female voices. For instance, if you compare Pavarotti to Katherine Jenkins. Their respective vocal ranges over-lap but the quality of their voice remains distinct, with Katherine focusing on the heavier sound at the back of the throat while Pav does his thing in his "head-voice", at least that's how you can look at it when their singing the same note. I feel that even though Opera isn't quite as in demand compared to today's music, it lays a good foundation for what your singing voice can do if trained properly. You can go off into your own different style once you learn how to use your voice and Opera/classical techniques are the best way to learn it how to explore your voice. People just need to realize that just because you trained your voice like that doesn't mean you have to sing like that in profession. Look at Mariah Carey, her mother is an opera singer, yet despite her opera-like training, she doesn't use an opera-voice when she sings, but she incorporates some opera techniques in her singing.
Isn't that so interesting
"I'm not known for my pitch or hearing" 1😔 that hits so close to home I could cry 🥺😭😭
Really nice editing, even cutting the sound sometimes to make the other person's point easier to hear/understand. Nice. :)
James brown looks exactly like my grandmother, lol. So pretty
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
DAYYYUUUUUM
Danielle....THAT was funny.
Hi my god 🙏 bless you
James Brown! I haven't watched yet but it's already the best video ever. Thanks for analyzing a nice variety of music.
2 Legends! + 2 Genres!= Amazing!
2 Voice Teachers
+ 2 Analyzing techniques
= 2 great dudes who share fun, informative, geniune thoughts and tips. Thank you Sam and Mark
I'd love to see you doing a comparison video of the different voice types such as tenors altos, sopranos, etc., and just showing us different people singing in those ranges.
Oh, yes!!!
Yes! I sing opera and for a long time I would overthink that I had to put all this physical effort into it. My current teacher and Sam’s teaching has taught me to relax and my voice has improved because there is a lot less tension. And now things are easier to do!
I love Pavarotti...no I adore him ❤️ he gives me goosebumps every time I listen to him! When he sings Ave Maria or Nessun Dorma , maaaan 😍😍😍
Pavarotti was born to sing Nessun Dorma
Andrea Camattari yes 🙌
"Singing is just speaking"
Harsh metal vocals: "Am I a joke to you?"
I read that in a harsh metal voice..
Lol vocal fry
This was a really informative video. Marc's explanation of the difference between singing and talking is particularly helpful. You guys rock!
Professor Harold Hill (Music Man) says, specifically, "Singing is just sustained talking."
i think the difference for me is i love James browns incredible soul voice and when i hear him i think about the history of that genre and what an amazing talent he was, and when i hear Pavarotti i think how does someone use their voice to do that. I am bricklayer with tattoos and i look like a rough dude and liking operatic music is the uncoolist thing imaginable but i find myself sharing my love for Pavarotti with whoever will listen because i dont want anyone to miss out on the most amazing experience that i stumbled apon. thanks for the vid
dunage66 I cannot not cry when I hear Pavarotti. ❤️😭😭😭
U R proof....never judge a book by its cover. I look like someone's old grandma ( I am 😁) but i can still dance like NO ONE Is watching....and idc if they are.
Inside I'm still that 18 year old i was in 1975, loving R&B, 40s jazz, folk, country, rock and roll, showtunes, opera and classical. Lol i just discovered earbuds and the pristine sound they produce. Im reliving my youth and enjoying the ride more than the 1st time i made the trip. Life is good.
Oh. My. God! This duet is in my top three duets of all time!!!!
Beyond their outstanding voices, stage presence and general amazingness, the two music styles and two voices are complementing eachother in a fabulous, fabulous eargams❤️
Thanks for this reaction, it made my day!
I like how both styles unexpectedly melt together so well 👌
That's one of my favourite performances of all time. So cool to see you talking about it ;) And I really like the guest format, it's a nice refreshment ;)
My wife and I love you and your videos, Sam! Loved the collab between you and your fellow vocal coach. We were just watching this duet the other day and it's a thing of beauty.
I've seen this video almost a hundred times but watching you guys review this made my eyes water. Thanks guys!
Such a good video! A perfect way of showing the similarity between different styles and the difference. And that they aren't that many! I love these discussions!
They complemented each other so beautifully and with respect.
This is why I love Sam's channel because he just appreciates the artistic beauty of the voice
This is so enjoyable and informative to watch! Well done
Two legends indeed. Thanks for the video.
This is the best freaking version of this song hands down! I’ve been listening to it through the years. I’m so excited you guys made a video on it!!
People that teach singing? Fantastic. I loved my grades school music teacher.
Wow!!! LOVE THIS❤️❤️❤️ Maybe my favorite video too! Pavarotti and James Brown - Wow! The two of you - Incredible! Of course, Sam you always make my day better🥰
More opera please Sam! And more Marc! 🙌🏻🙌🏻
This is definitely one of my favorite videos!
God, Pav hits that note and I get instant chills! I love James's soul though.
HELLLLLOOOOOO! Please react to Pavarotti and Mariah Carey's HERO Live in Pavarotti & Friends. 😍❤️
One of the reasons I love Pavarotti is the concerts he did with non-opera singers, because he did them so very well. Music is music, and genres are just details. Speaking of Pavarotti, can we talk you into analyzing Caruso live?
i am loving this collab! please bring Marc on more times!
One of our music directors always said “If you can speak it, you can sing it. “
I’d love to hear you react to David Bowie sometime!
Maybe Sweet Thing/Candidate 😍
In a metal band. These videos genuinely help. Learning to listen and learn about your own voice.
Gospel screamer like a black preacher. They were both old by this time it is beautiful. Style gentleman this men are legends.
Fantastic video Sam… Great content… Loved watching it… 👏👏👏
I needed a dose of your energy tonight.
I really enjoy listening to your reactions and analysis of various singers, it's very interesting to someone who isn't musically inclined. I've been very into listening to VoicePlay lately and would love to hear your analysis of them, especially to Queen in 5 min.
Thank you for reviewing one of my favourite performances of all time.
I can hear Chris brown crying and wishing in vain to be related to james brown
You're my favorite vocal coach.
It would be cool if you reacted to Natalie Weiss coaching her students.
i third this
I Fourth this. I love Natalie Weiss.
PLEASE!!
Yes
I just love this ❤️
Awww! I love seeing you two together doing collabs
“Marc what note do you think he was singing?” 🤣
I miss you both!!!
Oh that was great. I can't believe I've never seen this performance before but... "Which one is right?" and the answer is: both! Absolutely.
This music has the power of which the material of the universe is made, the top! great video thanks for publishing and commenting Pavarotti and James B. play enchanting melodies perfectly adapted to a symphony orchestra, all this bellissimo
Great video! This is A-level stuff, and I daresay a top-10 video on your channel.
Yo what you said about placement is so spot on. I started singing lessons in the 10th grade (now in my senior year of college) and I feel like obsessing over resonance space because that's what I was taught to really had me running around my voice in circles all the way up until like now. I literally didn't realize to what degree singing was like talking until this year and I FINALLY like my voice
What I love about these videos is how I am starting to understand why I enjoy some singers over others, even though they all may be excellent singers.
I think for me, technical perfection makes a singer, passion makes an artist. How passion is controlled determines if i like it or not....if that makes sense.
Incredible duo.
HELL YEAH one of my favourite duos ever
Yes chiaroscuro! Copertura I love these videos!
When 'talking' Brown is talking on pitch! This duet is one of my all time favorites. It's masterful - on so many 'levels'.
It's great to watch you guys talk, it's like we're the third friend just nodding on the background.
I'd suggest reacting to Emilie Autumn or Nina Hagen.
I think about this performance all the time
Both GOATs ! Different style of music.
I just love learning to listen to music differently!
The ease James Brown has on that Bb4.
4 minutes in and I love it 😍 I was doing the same, overdoing, overthinking and still working on it😅
I'd love to see you react to more songs in languages other than English and Korean! During your explanation of how you like singing that sounds like speaking I couldn't help but to think of a Dutch singer Herman van Veen. His songs always remind me more of a grandfather telling a sweet bedtime story than something sing-songy (not sure that's a word). His best known song is called Anne and my own favourite is Het Dorp. They aren't very flashy songs so I don't know if they'd make a good video for on UA-cam, but I thought you might enjoy his style of music.
I will love both u to teach me the technic that make this two gentlemen powerful as artist
I would love to hear you analyze Alison Krauss live singing. I would suggest checking out a video called Alison Rehearsal uploaded by Thom Flora.
In the lower/middle range my opera teacher suggest the feeling of talking but in a busy Italian street and I’m a grumpy Italian man ahaha
I Love that they were fan-geeking out visible Joy
PLEASE can you react to the duet Pavarotti did with Celine Dion ? It’s a truly amazing performance from both artists🙏🏻Thanks to both of you for this video 👏🏻👏🏻
stop overthinking and enjoy!! 2 LEGENDS--JUST FEEL
That's what make the song more powerful with two sounds n pitching
James Brown is the right way, classic is the teaching way. Soul, classic, all genres. James Brown is amazing in comparison.
That sounds good, Congratulations by Brasil
It would be amazing if you reviewed Jonathan Antoine x factor audition. I would love to hear your perspective! Btw I can"t stop binge-watching your videos, you're so kind and professional. Your videos and tips made me respect singers in a completely different way.
Enjoyed this discussion. Please analyze Lzzy Hale of Halestorm. I’ve seen them live several times and she’s quite the screamer.
When Brown sings "train", he makes it sound like a fading train.
Singing is just talking dramatically.
*slow* *claps*
On rhythm👌🏾💯
But isn't that voice acting?
@@mr.fufucudlypoops8207 well in a way it kinda is when you think about it🤔
Hi Sam!
I love your videos! I was thinking it would be cool to see you react to Type O Negative! The singer has a cool voice and I'd love to hear your analysis of it! Wolfmoon (live) could be a good video to watch!!
What am I doing here? I’m a master business student 😂 LOL
Nobody can resist the urge to check out such an interesting pairing!
ALthough I need to point out that you missed the best moment of that, which is how James works with the mic when he does the "train" echo ;P
I liked your Music Man reference . "How can there be any sin in sincere?" "ICE CREAM!"
Thank you... For a while, I explored opera on UA-cam, and I was very depressed to see the comments, that to a large extent consisted of "this singer is utter crap/has no technique whatsoever" - and the more successful the singer, the harsher the comments. It's strange to me that people who relish such beautiful music enjoys that kind of... bullying, frankly
You should take a look at the Pavarotti and BB king performance! Also, I’d like to see a reaction to Stevie Ray Vaughan and Johnny Copeland doing Tin Pan Alley. Blues, baby!!
When world's collide....it's beautiful..
I saw your collaboration with Dr Marc on his channel and that you got introduced to Forestella - I really hope you will react to some of their covers on your channel sometime soon!!
I can never un-hear the flavor Pavarotti added to this song. It has a different spirit that's dragging out what one usually knows how it should be sang and the basis is always the James Brown way. Pavarotti was rich and strong. Can't believe I'm only watching this now.
"What's the difference between singing and talking?" As Buddy the Elf put it, "Singing is talking except longer and louder and you move your voice up and down a lot." lol
Sam I love you and I love your videos. Please do stevie nicks!
Could you look at the night queen aria from the Magic Flute Opera - id be so interested to know how she hits those notes with ease ,
Thankyou! :)
I'd love to see you react to Altai throat singing.
Think it would be quite educational
Pavarotti and Friends was the best thing ever...
I'm sure you have but have you seen the opera duo Charlotte and Jonathon duo 2012 I think. He's gone on to be an amazing tenor! Would love to see a reaction to him 💚
I can’t imagine someone saying that women singing in chest voice is wrong in a world where YEBBA exists
People seem to forget that before the 1970s majority of the stuff below A4, even for the highest sopranos was done in chest voice.
Please please please analyze a Maria Callas performance! She was such a masterful performer.
Please do more of these tag-teams but of Marc Martel and Dimash....ooooo lordy.
