      @@SamJohnsonVoice Hi Sam, we're currently using your video in my high school male vocal ensemble. It's very nice for them to have someone with their voice type explaining how their works. It helps connect what we're teaching. Some of my students are new and like Veralidiane said, you broke it down in such a way that they understood even though for many of them, this is their first time in a vocal class. Take care and stay safe.

    My fellow voice teacher friend and I are discovering you at the same time, and you've inspired some great conversations over the past couple days. I have laryngeal damage due to my Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. I have been to numerous voice coachs (over the last 7 years) just to be able to produce what someone might call a voice. They do not understand that I have scar tissue and that my throat tears just from speaking and I feel like I have gotten no where with the guidance I have recieved. I started doing the exercises you do, Shake my head When I feel things are getting too tight but that I can continue (the voice coachs told me to sit straight, focus on my breathing, and to not move my head). I have increased my vocal duration from 20 minutes to about an hour a day. It doesn’t sound like much, but it is to me especially since speaking is an mandatory part of communication.
    I want to say thank you and please remember you are helping more people than you realize.

    I love how you explain things. I have never had a vocal teacher who could actually explain things about what was happening mechanically. I'm so sick of hearing "sing more forward". Across all your videos I think I've heard you say that only once, and you almost immediately followed it up with a much more helpful explanation of what that means. When I actually get money I want to donate to you, because you are an actual angel. >_

    I was classically trained during my school days, but never given much insight into the anatomy behind the techniques we used, or the ways I could vary them beyond classical rules. I’ve learned a lot on my own, but it’s been fascinating listening to your different approaches - and these warm up exercises are a great example! Very different from the way I was taught, but similar to the ways I automatically try to loosen off my voice when it feels uncomfortable. I absolutely love your methods & attitude, thank you for the free education!

    I have been absolutely fighting to find a teacher that just pulls me in and makes studying fun for me. I am 29 years old and have been singing since I was a child but never took lessons on instrument or voice. Recently I have joined a band and have been finding myself having some trouble recovering after a night of singing. I will most certainly try to FaceTime with you one of these days, I have so many questions that I don’t want just answered but actually want to dive into. Here’s to you! 🍻

      I feel you, I'm 24 and although I took lessons with multiple teachers I feel like it was kinda a waste of time. A lot of teachers contradict each other leaving you just confused. And I also get tired after a few songs so I'm sure there's something wrong with my technique. Check out Ken Tamplin too, he is a great voice teacher.

    You know your vocal warm-up is generally good if it sounds hilarious. 😂 The choir teacher I had briefly in high school always told me that it's partially the ridiculous sound of some of them that make them so useful. The different sounds and using different vowels obviously helps on a technical level, but it helps you to relax too. If it's wacky enough that you bust out laughing before you can get through the exercise, it's still helping, lol. Awesome video, Sam. I kind of stopped singing for a long while after my teacher moved to a different school (and we subsequently lost the choir program that had only just come back my senior after there being no program for 8 years) and now I'm having to try and relearn a lot of things, and your videos have a been a huge help. You teach very similar to the teacher I had, so that makes things even better. Great video!

Just did some work w/ ENT & will be working w/ speech therapist.

    Is it true that you shouldn't speak a lot before giving a performance?

    • @GetWellSoonR.E.M.
      @GetWellSoonR.E.M. 5 років тому

      Yes! Speaking and singing are the same thing, they exercise your voice muscles (aka the vocal cords). Think of it like when you lift weights. Eventually after using the muscles for awhile, they become tired and dont want to work. Same goes with the vocal cords. After awhile, they become too tired to work properly and you are more likely to strain your voice during the performance, more likely to crack, and more likely to have an unstable sound. Proper rest, hydration, and warming up is what will help you get the best results in your voice, aside from technique. Hope this helps!

    It's funny, I grew up singing... My mom had a radio show when she was 12 and toured all over, so she knew a bit about singing, but didn't really do warmups or anything. I skipped choir because I didn't get along with the teacher. So now I'm in my 40s, starting to learn about the technical side of singing. It's strange... I lost an octave through the years thanks to recurring laryngitis, but I'm getting it back slowly, which surprised the heck out of me!
    Thanks for helping me with this...it's fun and exciting!

    I was so sick for almost two years straight, starting in 2015, to where I couldn't stop coughing 24/7 and ended up not being able to sing for a long time. I am still not at 100% or back to how I used to be back when I was classically trained, but your videos have been very helpful.

    • @ProfessorMJ_
      @ProfessorMJ_ 6 років тому

      OsakaRose Same here. I was always an contralto, but after being sick, I could barely make any noise at all. I lost my voice completely for two months. Which sucks when your job is the teach and lecture college students. Although the coughing fits have gone away for quite some time now, I still have difficulty doing much aside from walking slowly. However, after watching Sam's videos, I have finally figured out how to expand my vocal range and technique. I still have quite a way to go, but progress is something that I don't take lightly.

  • @Fairlight2cx

    You know... I subscribe to someone's vocal lessons online. (Hannah Boulton) One of the issues I really had was...well, two, really. One is just that I usually have limited time, so I tend to "warm up" by just starting singing. (I'm totally untrained, btw...as in, I had maybe a couple hours' "training" for a high school musical, and that was it. So I'm learning stuff largely through research and just working on it. The other was just...feeling silly doing practise exercises like this. Obviously you don't. I'm trying to get past the point where I do. I actually feel more self-conscious doing these sorts of exercises than i do actually singing...and I'm *really* self-conscious about singing.
    So...how do you get past any sort of "stage fright" with this sort of thing? I mean, my wife's not gonna care one way or another, but I still feel self-conscious. i think it's partly the same reason I absolutely hate singing on dry monitors, but I'm fine with it if I put comfort reverb on the channel. I'm coming to terms with my voice, and can actually stand to listen to my work, and even like some of it now (though I'd take a new voice in a heartbeat!), so I've come some ways, but there's still this huge self-consciousness behind it. Like I said, at this point I'm actually more comfortable actually just trying to sing a song, than doing warmups/exercises. That said, I recognise that the exercises and warmups probably would help.
    Any advice? I mean...I ask because 1) you know what you're doing, and 2) you seem completely matter-of-fact and at ease with what you're doing, and I'd feel like an idiot. Not saying you should, just wanting to know how to come to terms with it. Ever seen someone self-conscious about warmups/practise exercises before?
    Thanks if you'll answer. Thanks for reading in any event, if you got this far.

    Amazing! So many things that you do are really close to what I do for an opera warm up, which just goes to prove what I keep telling younger singers - the basics are the basics are the basics, whether you’re going to sing opera, music theatre, pop, rock, metal. Doesn’t matter. Voices all want the same thing: freedom, clarity, and kindness. Also loved hearing the transition from morning voice to warmed up voice. You have a lovely sound Sam!

      And like...how is your speaking voice not doing so well (I heard it break a couple times) and your singing voice is just fine... HOW.
      I'm shook.

      Okay, you have to be a baritone is G3 is over your first break. Lol. That's like nearing the end of my "usable tone" (I mean I can sing an Ab2 or G2, but I don't feel like it's singing. It's just croaking.)

    This is actually super close (a lot of exercises) to what I've learned from Roger Love's audio book Set Your Voice Free and his warmups online. Super helpful vid Sam, keep killin it, would love some more content like this!

    I just recently found your Videos and they are great!
    I love the way you explain things step by step. I have watched many “vocal coach reacts” videos and you are by far my favorite to watch!
    P.s. I love your graphic t-shirts. Especially the lord of the rings shirt with the eye and the ring. 😂

    Very interesting perspectives. When you use the nasal sounds you are incorporating the soft palate. Swallowing does indeed make the larynx rise. The cricoarytenoids are the muscles most important to the narrowing of the vocal folds. As an SLP I am enjoying your videos. Learning with you, to help others with voice goals. Tthough my students don't have the end goals of your students, knowledge gained can only help me to serve them better. Thank you!

    Utah jazz.....does this mean you're in Utah?! 😍 cause I could come see you in person if that's the case! I've ALWAYS wanted voice lessons and never had them. I love music, dance, and instruments but am not great at any of it and its always been a goal of mine to work on them. I'm incredibly timid though and am always worried about some internal judging coming from people teaching me, but I can tell you are absolutely not like that at all and I would love to be a pupil of yours when I can finally afford it 😍😍

    How come every vocal warm up I try to follow seems super fast to me? I’m still trying to catch my breath and you’re/they’re already starting the next line. Is it just me? Usually when I’m warming up, the rest of me isn’t quite warmed up/awake yet either, lol!
