    I’ve been studying classical music/opera for 10 years and have always enjoyed your evaluations and commentary. It’s very insightful and informational. Thank you!
    I have a darker/rounder sound and have always asked myself the same question about agility and runs. Some people’s voices just love to move, which makes it much easier for them. That was not the case with mine at all. However, I have been determined to understand and practice coloratura/runs. I have come such a long way from being terrified of runs to being able to do them. But it takes an incredible amount of mental perseverance and daily practice.

      @Jazzy Yu What helps me is taking coloratura passages (runs) and turning them into vocal exercises. I'll even take a part of a run and sing it in a bunch of different keys. Once I feel comfortable with it, I'll add the next part of the run into that exercise and continue doing it in different keys. For whatever reason, taking it out of context always seems to help. I'm going to be doing a video on my channel soon on how I practice runs.

      So true, few singers are able to deliver fancy runs without sounding annoying. To me apart from the technique (which u obviously need as a base) what makes the difference is the musicality and the spontaneity of the run. If it came out from a feeling or it was just forced to get that soulfoul r&b mariah carey style. Sam is soo good and spontaneous in doing that, he's never annoying just like Yebba as u said and Mariah which is like a goddess in this field.

    • @jennifervenne-redlund9237
      @jennifervenne-redlund9237 4 роки тому +2

      Totally agree, Sams runs are so effortless and subtle that it’s appropriate. I know it’s hard and probably not effortless for the singer but Sam emotes so much, the runs make you feel the music, in my opinion, if that makes sense.

    Hi Sam, another great video - I keep binging, and the sheer positivity is a huge hook. I was just wondering - have you thought about doing a Miley Cyrus video? Yes, she's a disney grown pop artist. But I can never tell how much of her voice is synthesised, and I wish I could tell with her back yard sessions (It would be amazing if they were closer to raw). Plus, she recently redid one of those songs - see you again. And it just sounds country, and it's hers. It would be really interesting to see how country vocals differ from pop in terms of vocals, and have it explained. I know I spent ages trying to figure out the classic country guitar sounds just because I find them addictive (I can't sing, but love to listen), and I'm thinking that all the twang applies to their voices.

    Runs get better with practice. You can't really teach someone runs. You can break the notes down, but the agility is something that comes with repetition. You have to exercise the muscle. I'd recommend "Full Moon" album by Brandy, (they don't call her the vocal Bible for nothing) for practice. Or any type of classic Gospel or R&B music really, because that's where that style of singing stems from. Keeping pitch in mind and knowing where to place them is key. And you have all the time to fuck up in private, so you know what not to do while performing. Kim Burrell (legendary Gospel vocalist) is also AMAZING at doing ridiculously fast runs. One of the pioneers for today's music. Even if you never heard of her, one of your favorite singers is influenced by her. Anyone can learn runs tho.

    I have to say Sam (and I’ve probably said it before, but I’ll say it again), I really appreciate that you always make an effort to get pronouns right.
    Unfortunately, a lot of people just don’t get why it’s so important, or they think certain pronouns are “silly” or ungrammatical. Though to that I say:
    Roses are red,
    Violets are blue
    Singular “they” is older
    Than singular “you”
    But for those who don’t get the importance, it would be wonderful if they could experience just one day where absolutely everybody they come into contact with, uses the wrong pronouns for them. I think they’d get it then. Pronouns reflect our gender, and that’s one of the most basic, foundational parts of our identity. It’s like our name. It’s so intensely personal, but also extremely public. And to have people misgender you by using the wrong pronouns (even accidentally) is like a blow to the very deepest part of you as a person.
    And so I will always appreciate when people make the effort to respect others as fully realised human beings. Because when others see you just using the right pronouns without seeming to have any difficulty, it encourages others to do the same. It’s important. And I thank you for it.
    (Also to be clear, I’m not trans, but I have a lot of friends who are. But I am part of other minority groups, ones that impact my identity, and I know a small part of the pain of having that identity disregarded)

    Can you react to the masked singer? I want to know how they can identify professionals from amateurs.

    When I'm listening to a singer that does runs, I think of them having a bank account. They have to build that up with emotional connection, establishing the melody well in my mind, etc. before they cash out some of it to pay for a run. Otherwise, it goes into the red, just stunting.
