Their big disco hit was "Miss You". The single is 4:00 but there is a 8:00 club mix. The original unreleased, unedited version is 15:00. I'm a Stones fan from day one and listen to a wide range of music so the Stones wandering off is fine with me. Something different by them would be "Backstreet Girl". It has a French Cafe feel.
The Stones have managed to fit in with every genre and era. They have not done a bad record yet. Plus, hundreds of songs that never made it to original albums. Some made their way as bonus tracks over the years. A phenomenal catalog of music.
The Disco party was dead by 1980. There were a few stragglers, and this was one of them. Their 1978 hit "Miss You" was much more Disco and was part of that late '70s party.
There's an actual music video for this song and it is worth a watch if for no other reason than the 80's cheese factor, and to watch Charlie Watts high AF behind the drum kit(he is in a whole other world).
The Stones are Bad Boys, all members are geniuses. They turn out music that can't be duplicates...Jagger's vocals,Richard's riffs, and the drums when Charlie Watts was alive, the same goes with Bobby Keys on the sax. What a remarkable band!
For some great sax I would recommend Can't You Hear Me Knocking. The last part of that song is an impromptu jam that just so happens to be one of The Stones top 5 songs and some of the very, very best jazz/rock fusion you'll ever hear. How it came to be is a really interesting story as well.
I think Reactors forget that their exposure to any band is very limited. Some will say things like, "We know the Beatles now, we've listened to at least ten tracks of theirs!" Forgetting that the Beatles have recorded 350 songs. With the Stones, we have been listening to them evolve over 60 years so nothing they did came as a shock. The changes were relatively gradual. BTW, I LOVE your reactions! PJ
It was a brilliant move for them in 1980. They'd released 78's Some Girls with Beast and Shattered and needed a follow up and this goes in a different but current and interesting fashion.
In each decade, the Stones have adapted a few songs to the respective music style and created their own sound. But they have never completely forgotten their blues and country roots. For me they are the best chameleons in the music industry. That's probably one of the recipes for being able to continue for decades to come - who knows. Thanks for sharing this, cool and great band - best wishes to you all from Hamburg / Germany
That may have been the official lyric video but when the album was released in 1980 there was an official video of the band playing the song that was the video we all saw. Much more interesting to watch. The critics hates this album but the fans generally liked it
@@kenford4798 yeah you are right but I don’t think you lose anything by taking out a minute of the repeating the same words over and over against the musical background that doesn’t change. The album version was more like a club mix of a somg than something new
You know, you may not like every song. The Rolling Stones do, but I can guarantee you. One thing, everybody can find a song that they like. They are so diverse and they were able to keep up with The Times which is more than literally. Any other group has been able to do That's why in my opinion , they are the greatest man in history , sixty years and still rocking
1980 this song was trying to attach itself to disco for sure. Disco was pretty much done as a musical genre. The Rollng Stones have always been popular, not always for the right reasons.
Disco just morphed into having a more electronic sound. Dance music has practically never gone away. For the Stones this was just their latest addition. They had obviously done Miss You in 1978 and before that one they did a couple of funky/dance songs on Black and Blue.
The Stones were playing disco since the mid 70s. The album Black and Blue was very funky. Check out the song Hot Stuff. Then there was Miss You from the Some Girls album, a huge disco hit!
I grew up on 70's rock and prog rock and I HATED this song when it was released. It has aged so well, though, and I can't think of any song where I've done more a turn with the passage of time - I love this one now.
I can't say that I've hated a song when it was released, and now love it. It's usually the other way around. Tunes I once enjoyed, decades later I think to myself, Why did I ever like that song? "Emotional Rescue" I've always liked. And still do...
As a disco hating classic rock fan at that time, I could have done without disco-tinged Stones tunes. I was excited when their next album, Tattoo You returned to the rock and even blues roots of Mick, Kieth and the band 👍
For me the best, longevity, diversity, sheer brilliance and courageous attitude, the albums display the full depth of their talents, Mick sings with consummate ease and expression while the guitars are playing in open tunings which is no mean feat!
Jamie comes through with such a fine Stones' later offering. Nicely rounding out the channel, showing how the Stones always maintained relevance. A little funky town going down!

I was a senior in high-school when this came out and I have joked that Emotional Rescue, She's So Cold and Start Me Up are Mick expressing sexual frustration in dating. The thing I like about the Stones is that their longevity created a couple of different generations of fans that like certain areas but appreciate all of their music. My Stones era is from the mid 70's to the mid 80's but I like the music before and after that time frame. It does have that disco flavor to it, but a lot of groups and singers did so during that time.
I love the 1969-74 Stones. I wasn't a fan of disco at all, but the Stones evolved with the music styles. one later release that you should check out is Love is Strong off of Voodoo Lounge 1994. also check Undercover of the Night from '83.

Disco balls or Mirror Balls, were first used in 1920's. Progressive Rock band Yes used a disco ball in their live shows. I think this is a new video, 2023. The little video of Mick that it showed in the video was the original. The term Falsetto goes back to the 16th century. I remember the Rolling Stones from the Ed Sullivan Show in the mid sixties. My brother had Flowers (1965) and Beggar's Banquet (1968). I started liking them as a contemporary band with Goats Head Soup (1973). Some Girls, the album before this, was great. This is one of my top ten favorite Rolling Stones songs. I never liked disco or the Bee Gees in their disco period that much, so disco music doesn't come to mind when I hear this, although I realize Mick was influenced by the music of the day.
To the true fans, this was just another example of the Stones being able to do any genre better than those who were stuck in those genres. They also did country music superior to anything coming from Nashville! ❤

t has disco elements, but sometimes you can't put a genre on the Rolling Stones. They are their own genre, especially up through the 70s, when they innovated from album to album. I would say they are interesting up until Undercover in 1983. From the late eighties, not much new happens. That's not to say the rest of the back catalog is bad, because apart from Dirty Work from '86, they haven't made outright bad albums.
I always prefer watching the Stones perform in video or live. Just adds to the energy! Yeah, yeah, yeah - I know you say you want to listen to studio version first and will do the video later. blah, blah, blah, blah I'm out, but I'll return when you do the video. And I don't consider this disco at all!
I doubt they play this Live, too often - all the studio audio and recording-effects. This album was experiemental. Their Next was more traditional Stones. I've seen them Live - this was not part of the set.
One of the biggest misunderstandings of the Stones is that they belonged to a specific genre. Not true in the least. If you listen to their LPS, especially starting in the late 60’s, they encompassed a lot of diff styles within any one recording. What people know are the hits, but that’s not really only who they are. This song is not really an oddity to Stones fans when you heard a recording like Exile on Main Street and experienced all the varied sounds they embraced. We know they like to do diff things. Yes they are primarily a rock and roll band but they never ever stayed in a specific lane. Never.
Exactly, the time signature is 2/4 on the foot Tom & Charlie implements hus personal touch, akin time signature to 4/4 or "4 on the floor" Ancient Cultures have been 2 steppin' to that Forever & a day,fun fact Pink Floyd were reluctant to release "Run Like Hell" as they deemed it "Trendy" ir "Disco" because of the beat, thank goodness they decided to share it with the World!!!
