Did you see their Global Citizen performance? It’s Charlie at his funniest, wittiest, most droll! ua-cam.com/video/N7pZgQepXfA/v-deo.htmlsi=xCuokra_xbYG0Vxc
This song came out I think in 1980 and they took a bit of a hit for the disco influence from some fans and critics but in the end, they were the Stones and they could do whatever they wanted. This song eventually became a regularly played song at their live concerts as fans pretty much embraced it in the end.
@@ckayuha2351 Pink Floyd - Another brick in the Wall. You can't tell me that isn't Disco inspired. lol melprophet picked another one that instantly came to my head with Another one bites the Dust
"Shattered" - punky, funky, with almost an early proto-rap delivery from Mick. Really innovative and rocking. Plus that rhythm guitar tone from Keith is awesome.
The rhythm section of Wyman and Watts really make this song. That bass groove just hooks you and Charlie's deceptively simple drumming bring it together before the guitars and sax come in. Of course Mick singing in falsetto for most of the song takes you off guard and I love his spoken part at the end of the song. This video highlights why Mick is one of rock's greatest frontmen and I must say I've always loved this song - great reaction, guys.
One problem with your comment- Bill Wyman doesn’t play bass on this song, it’s Ronnie Wood. Wyman never played that many notes in his life. Wood played bass in the Jeff Beck Group years ago too.
This IS my favorite Rolling Stones song!!! I also love Honky Tonk Women, Miss You, Shattered, Beast of Burden, Sympathy for the Devil, Paint It Black, Too Proud To Beg, It’s Only Rock n Roll and She’s So Cold!!
I love this song. As others have said, it came out at the height of the disco craze and I can just imagine the Stones--previously dubbed the greatest rock and roll band in the world, looking at each other and saying, well we can do disco, too. A brilliant concept beautifully executed.
In the 90’s the Stones released their Voodoo Lounge album. The single from the album was “”Love is Strong”. The song is somewhat similar to “Emotional Rescue”. Strange video with it too.
The album "Some Girls" is my favorite Stones era, I was 12 in 1978 and it was my first real awareness of them in pop culture. The song "Shattered" blew my pubescent mind.
Just goes to show, we are only as old as we feel! Tina Turner had a good long run as well, she was literally running across stages in heels in her 60s, and was hardly winded! I have so much respect for entertainers like this! Go on Mick, you can rest when ur laid to rest! 🥰🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
the bassline is superb and i love the ..."I was dreaming last night..." part. The punk-tinged "Where the Boys Go" & "She's So Cold" are other cool singles off this classic album. ty jay & amber!!
Late 70's, early 80's...Some Girls , Emotional Rescue, Tattoo You. Those 3 albums sealed the deal of the Stones being one of the all time greats. They just kept going and going. Putting out banger after banger. Top 3 rock band of all time. Many peoples number 1
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this song! FINALLY! Simply because he has this high falsetto range in the beginning of this song, then he can go back to normal and change it up again! I love it and that one part where he says "Mm, yes you could be mine, tonight and every night, I'll be your night and shining armor coming to your emotional rescue" I look forward to that part of the song too. My first time watching this video and I let a "Whooo"! I didn't know we were going to get a little tush action from Mick Jagger in the video! My highlight too Amber! I too am a middle child! Hee hee hee! What a treat though! 🤗I'm glad you enjoyed the video, I did too! ☮ and 💕
When this song came out, The Bee Gees and their falsetto voices owned the radio, plus the Stones had just had a big hit with their other disco-influenced song "Miss You", so it probably made sense to them to do another disco-ish song. But "Emotional Rescue" is a lot more tongue-in-cheek than "Miss You" - the whole idea of Mick being "a knight in shining armor, coming to you on a fine Arab charger" is intentionally out-there, but it looks like they're having a lot of fun with this song.
This song was released right about the beginning of my junior year of high school in 1980. This has always been one of my favorite Rolling Stones songs, and they have a ton of songs I love. This song really immediately makes me think of high school and those 3 amazing years (10-12). 👅
It's crazy how you can remember things, like the first time my dad ever played this song for me. He used to clean the American Legion Hall post 307 in New Orleans to get a discount on our rental house owned by the Legion, and we were there cleaning and setting up for Sunday bingo. The Stones were one of dads favorites
I forgot about that video. Now I suddenly see it before my eyes. Thanks for reminding me! Those crazy 80s. "Harlem Shuffle" is a song written and recorded by Bob & Earl, already in 1963.
Who would have thought, the Stones and Disco, but they made it happen, I remember seeing the Stones in 1981 at the LA Coliseum with the J. Giels band, George Thorogood, and Prince of all people opening the show. Prince, who at the time, was not known, lasted about three songs then got booed off the stage with the crowd throwing things at him. At the time I had never heard of Prince, so I thought "well I guess we'll never see that guy again"! Little did we know he would come back and be one of the biggest, If not the biggest acts of the 80's
Stones are full of wide range of music , you never know what you're going to get next . You Guys should check out " Waiting on a Friend " You'll love it . Thanks
What is great about this song, how smoothly it can fit into Disco, Rock and New Wave. I remember fellow high school students being highly critical of this song. First time hearing it, was at a high school dance. I was in an Atlanta night club in 85 and the DJ mixed Marvin Gayes "Got To Give It Up" with "Emotional Rescue". We tore that dance floor up.
Mick is a trip. They say that we are all made star stuff, literally. Well, the composition of his star stuff is very different from anyone else’s. He’s one of a kind and awesome.
I still remember Bill Murray singing this as "Nick the Lounge Singer" when he came back to host SNL in the early 80's. He really went for it! "Uh hi....hi hi.....hi hi HIGHHH!!!"
The Stones poking fun at the Disco sound and lyrics. Best description of most Stones songs is "controlled chaos." So many sounds, rythyms and just assundry things in them.
Summer of 1980. This song was all over the radio. This, “Cars” by Gary Numan, and “It’s Still Rock and Roll To Me” by Billy Joel. You can definitely hear the disco influence here. Probably Bee Gees, too, with the falsetto vocals. It’s kind of funny how many men get self-conscious singing high vocals. Some of them think it’s not manly yet most women dig it. Barry, Prince, Mick, Paul, etc.
I used to hang out with crazy punk rockers about when this album came out. They HATED "hippy music", like 60's-early 70's. But this album, and the Stones were "punk-approved". They were always on the EDGE.
I thought the Mick Taylor period was their most Punk period, The Stones were inspired by the Velvet Underground, MC5 and The Stooges, Bakersfield Sound and Americana Rock when they broke away from the British Invasion sound in 1968 with Beggar's Banquet. Richards and Iggy looked Punk Rock a few years before there was a look in 77', edgy and unkept and Iggy with his stage performance. I love Punk and protopunk. Protopunk and Hendrix, Keith Moon, John Entwistle were the influences for making Rock harder and more alternative in the 70s. Their legacies stretch to today and keep stretching.
When i was in the Punk scene between 1985 to 1990 the only classic artists that i remember people were cool with was David Bowie & The Who. The Mod's were the first true Punks in the 60's.
@@SaintMartins The Who yes! David Bowie the Pop musician? Dylan is the lyrical and vocal king of Punk. Musically I would say, Who, Kinks, VU, Stooges. Bowie was probably a better producer on Punk albums than he ever was a Punk musician. Rocket From The Tombs a favorite Punk band of mine.
I'd like to suggest 'Harlem Shuffle', 'Twenty Flight Rock', and 'Little T&A', sung by Keith. Also Keith singing 'Happy', 'Connection' and 'Salt of the Earth'. From his solo career 'Take It So Hard', 'No Mistake' and 'Could've Stood You Up'. Loads to explore. You're doing great!!🎉😂😊❤
With the old rock bands like this, when the question is "where do they get that energy from?" the answer is almost always copious amounts of coke. Ironically, the only one who generally didn't partake was Charlie. In fact I'm pretty sure it was the Stones who were partying in a hotel room when a friend went to answer the door and shouted "It's the police!" so they ran to the bathroom to flush all the drugs, only to come back out and be greeted by Sting.
Watched an hour-long documentary about Charlie Watts and i had to laugh. Charlie seemed so laid back. Bernard Fowler, who was a back-up singer for the Stones on tour and in the studio for many years, quoted something Charlie said----i think the Glimmer Twins must have been acting up. Charlie said, "Oh for God's Sake Bernard, what are they on about?". Charlie was a great lover of jazz and he showed off the collection of drum sets he accumulated of the great drummers over the years. I think it said he had a 100 or more sets; all labeled with whom they belonged to. He even had a drum set that belonged to DJ Fontana, Elvis's drummer, that Elvis bought for Fontana in Houston. RIP CHARLIE WATTS.
He would've been late 30s here! Charlie Watts, so unaffected on those drums just cracks me up! Hah! He was a solid presence. Mother's Little Helper is a great one that I don't think you've reacted to. It's an earlier one that I think you''d enjoy.
Mick's vocals - all over the place. Falsetto, mainstream rock vocals, almost a rap near the end, and those spoken words... Fantastic! Bass and drums. Sax. SAX! Always the guitars. Ignore the odd video, but crank UP the volume for this one.
"Emotional Rescue" was like a joke, but we were all in on it, so it was OK. This is in the immediate aftermath of Saturday Night Fever and during the disco era. There's a little Barry Gibb falsetto and a disco-like beat. Mick dancing around like a chicken having a seizure. I'd like to think that they were totally high when they wrote this one. That would explain a lot.
I really thought you guys had done this one before. It's another one of those surprising Stones tunes where it completely obliterates your expectations and it takes a minute to sink in...but eventually becomes an absolute classic.
Jagger’s antics are legendary. Maroon 5 even had a hit with their “Moved Like Jagger” track. Can you imagine being one of his kids or grandkids or great grandkids though? It must be normal for them but for most people, watching their great grandpa prance around on stage like he does would be mortifying…or something. Then again, his children range in age from 6 (yes, six) to 52 so there’s something else hard to imagine. His older GREAT-grandchild is older than his own youngest. Can you imagine being daughter Jade and packing up your grandkids and your little brother to go to the kiddie-park?
It's funny you mentioned favorites because this one IS my favorite RS song, tied with Miss You. 😂 One of my all-time favorite songs, period. 8 year old me in 1980 just instantly loved it!
I love the Stones, but this one is my favorite. The funky bass (I'm surprised Jay didn't comment on that!) The vocals, falsetto at first then suddenly super low. The ooh ah ooh ah ah ooh ah ah ah. There's just something about it all that I just love.
My late husband was a big Stones fan and I wasn’t. This song was one of two that I liked that they did and this was the one (and possibly the only) song he didn’t like. I didn’t realize Mick was so much fun to watch. I’ll have to check out more of the band’s videos.
Charlie, RIP, looked as if he was asleep whilst playing! This was a big US hit back in 1980, reaching number 2 on the pop charts. Fool to cry is another song in which mick sings falsetto.
Another of my FAVORITE BANDS!! Some long standing Stones fans didn't enjoy much of their 80s stuff: but, I LOVE ALL THEIR STUFF!!! Even loved Jagger's She's The Boss album....JUST such a GREAT BAND!! HUGS!!! ❤
"Bitch", as mentioned below is a super tune, you should check it out too. So many different avenues that the Stones have been down, you could get lost for a lifetime....
Emotional Rescue was huge!!! To this day I can still sing the whole thing. Spoken word and all!! Lol
Still a great party song along with "Dance"!
Mick is over 80 years old and he still has that same energy, whatever he is eating or drinking, I want some of it.
Drummer, Charlie Watts unfazed by Mick Jagger, that's the highlight of this video for me!
"Can't Ya Hear Me Knockin" - best Stones banger ever!
Charlie (the drummer) is the perfect foil for Mick in these videos. He's back there keeping the beat and staying unimpressed by Mick's antics.
I love how he's always rolling his eyes and looking so both over and amused by Mick! 🤣🤣🤣
and always has that boyish smirk

Then again, his children range in age from 6 (yes, six) to 52 so there’s something else hard to imagine. His older GREAT-grandchild is older than his own youngest. Can you imagine being daughter Jade and packing up your grandkids and your little brother to go to the kiddie-park?
It's funny you mentioned favorites because this one IS my favorite RS song, tied with Miss You. 😂 One of my all-time favorite songs, period. 8 year old me in 1980 just instantly loved it!
Summer 1980! Hell yeah. I loved this song when it was out.
New songs, Hungry and sweet sounds of Heaven, after 18 years new originals.
The Stones are a band that can do any style (disco, blues, soul, rock, gospel, country, punk) and still be the Stones.
I love the Stones, but this one is my favorite. The funky bass (I'm surprised Jay didn't comment on that!) The vocals, falsetto at first then suddenly super low. The ooh ah ooh ah ah ooh ah ah ah. There's just something about it all that I just love.
Greatest Rock n Roll Band ever 🤘
My late husband was a big Stones fan and I wasn’t. This song was one of two that I liked that they did and this was the one (and possibly the only) song he didn’t like. I didn’t realize Mick was so much fun to watch. I’ll have to check out more of the band’s videos.
2024!!! backstreet girl is a very beautiful song too.
Fabulous ☺ ♥. I love this track.
HUGS!!! ❤
The range on that man and what kills me is the absolute chill vibes from the drummer lol
Mick learned some of his moves from Tina Turna and the godfather of soul James brown !! He also does a lot of ballet to keep in shape
Sir Mick runs about five miles a day to keep in shape. His father was fitness instructor ❤
Both Charlie Watts, the Drummer and Bill Wyman, Base Guitarist where the steadying forces in the group!
SAW THEM LIVE 15 YEARS AGO...THEY PLAYED FOR TWO OR MORE HOURS!!! ENERGY PLUS!!!!👍❤
"Bitch", as mentioned below is a super tune, you should check it out too. So many different avenues that the Stones have been down, you could get lost for a lifetime....
