I would love to use this on all the airline trips I take. I really liked how you used multiple brushes and can see myself using waterbrushes as well, using the water wells to hold tools. I felt there was a big difference in your brush vs the supplied one, but can see how convenient the smaller one would be for adding details. Great review, thanks for all the effort.

This palette would come in handy if you are traveling. Take it with you where ever you go. I almost like your first painting better, I’m curious to try out the paintbrush myself.

As someone who owns one of these, a few thoughts: I'm glad they added the elastic band to help keep track of the metal bit - I bought the first release and it didn't come with that. The Isabey travel brush and the Silver Black Velvet travel brush each fit well in the palette if you want a bigger brush. The palette won't leak into your pocket or purse if you put it inside the case, but you should still let it dry a bit first so your colors don't run together. Lastly, be sure the paint in the palette is bone dry before you close it up for an extended period (more than a couple of days), especially in humid climates. The snug design of the palette case means that air cannot get in much, and your paint could get moldy. I had this issue, luckily with just one of my pans. I scrubbed it out and it's fine now- just wasted some paint.

I received one of these from a Teoh giveaway which I will be reviewing, in part, in my upcoming video, as well. I love that you commented on the pans and the fits. In the past when I've cleaned mixing areas, I wipe them with a thin coat of coconut oil, which I wipe out again. It seems to extend the life of the mixing area and allow paint to bead longer. I also tried Pledge furniture polish on metal, and it worked for a while, too. I love this little palette and I'm looking forward to taking it on vacation soon. So, funny - I also considered replacing the brush with the exact same brush (and a #3 DaVinci), but decided to just keep the dual brush for now. I really appreciate the first painting you did for this and how you, yourself, viewed the execution and decided to retry. Another excellent review and thank you! I think with all the attention we're paying to it, sales will definitely increase and that means more interest in art! Yay! Go art! :D

I literally watched all the reviews of portable painters because they kept coming in the recommended vid section. I really love that the band is there now. I just hope there is a bigger version with one more row of half pans. I have more than 60 watercolor paints and I just want to carry more than 12 colors with me.
I still would love to try this out because it seems like a nice palette with lots of mixing areas. Hope that somebody sells this in South Korea oneday : )
BTW Thanks for the review !!

Hi Eve, this was a good review. I have seen this Portable Painter reviewed by other UA-camrs and even thought about buying it. But, I just could not justify the expense. I watched how one UA-camr put the assembled Portable Painter over his knee in order to sit down and paint on location. I would not be able to do that because my knee is too wide. I would still need a table of some sort. If I saw one of these on the store shelf, it would probably have a mark up price of at least $30. I do hope you enjoy using your Portable Painter when you get to paint on location.

Interesting video Eve! If I had this palette I'd use it when I go to the beach next summer. Last summer was the first time I had painted outside and although I didn't create any great artwork I found it a great way to learn new skills. This palette would be great for that situation.

I never realized the actusl difference between synthetic and natural brushes so that was interesting to watch too. Thx for sharing

I have been watching for this palette since I first saw it here on UA-cam about nine months ago. I think it is a very well thought out design and I would definitely use it plein air. My only concern would be that my pans wouldn’t fit if I wanted to switch out colors.
As always, thank you for another interesting video, Eve!

It seems that the palette is thorugly thought out in all the details. I think the two water containers are one the best features of it. As I usually paint sitting down, I truly appreciate the hands-free element.
Thanks for a great review! :)

Your second painting is more refined :) But both are lovely! Feeling comfortable with your brush is very important no matter the setting, it's an extension of you! :) I'd love this travel palette, but don't go plein aire painting much! I would use it for storing new paints that I have yet to review, (I'm trying to find my perfect travel colors). Right now, for on the go painting, I use a zip top handbag that was a cast off from a co-worker, I throw a small watercolor palette and a few small cuts of paper and a few water-brushes and lot of unnecessary items I cram in there, LOL and voila I'm ready to go. I hope whomever get this uses it well! :)

Great review Eve :-) Have been considering this palette for some time. Looks great for urban and beach sketching. I don’t love standing up and draw , always looking for a place to sit down. And having the two water cups is what I love most about it. It’s a pity it can’t take lager travel brushes, but that seems the only negative thing. I gave my self, as a Christmas gift, the same Da Vinci travel brush you use in this video, and I absolutely love it.

Great video Eve! 😁 I have thought about get this several times, but can't right now. I hadn't yet because I still like having more than 12 colors for our Sunday morning plein air dates... I like having options. 😆 Though this summer we will be going out in nature more to paint & this would be really handy for those times. I appreciate you showing what happens when you close it with there still being wetness in side. I don't think I have seen a review showing that it can leak. Definitely very good to know!! 🤗 Oh & I saw the differences with the brushes in your paintings. I would use my other travel brushes too.

The second painting is far more refined, which was to be expected, I think, considering the brush included is so small. I admire your persistence in continuing to use the brush in the first painting.
I would probably use this palette to sketch and paint landscapes en plein air.

First: I love your videos! They are super relaxing to watch and I love the music in the background, also your voice is very calming :) The palette is absolutely amazing! I love the included water caps and that there are two of them :D It is so compact, it would be joyous to own one of these. Ah and I forgot: there are two mixing areas, which I like. I have a cotman set, which is very compact as well, but I am missing more mixing space. I am strolling around on their website for a while now... Someday... :D Have a beautiful day, eve :)

I really like the improvements they've made since the first one came out. I've been of the mind that it wasn't worth it but now it seems better. I would love to do plein air painting but it kind of scares me, you know? I'm really shy about my work so it'd feel like painting with a spotlight on me! Just gotta work on that confidence, I guess. Bummed about the pan size though! I only have empty Schmincke pans. 😭

Two points in your review were new from previous U-Tube reviews: size of brush tray and need to dry palette wells and water pockets. Both are important considerations as I use portable palettes on long train or plane rides. Would love to experiment with -- if selected as winner.

Great review! I like how this palette has the water container already incorporated so you don’t have to carry another container. I saw how they added the plastic band to hold the clasp from the first version of the palette and thought that was also great.

Thanks for the review - it seems like a great product. I would definitely use this palette for painting in my nature journal. I love sketching plants, animals, flowers, shells, trees, etc. The fact that this palette adjusts to different terrains is a bonus. It could be used on a rock in the wilderness or on a picnic table in a city park. I recently got some Da Vinci paints and really enjoy their bright hues. I hope you will review yours in the future. I'm also looking forward to your seeing your Spring outing with your Portable Palette!

I've seen a lot of videos on this palette and I think my favorite thing about it is that it come with the water containers on the side. I usually prefer painting with non water brushes (well kind of I go through phases of which I like better) and it's really cool to see a palette that comes with something to hold the water so I don't have to get something like that separate.

Thank you for a very informative review! I love that you show the instructions. I couldn’t read them on my phone screen, but could see the detailed color photos. I didn’t realize the band fit into the grooves of the clip! I haven’t seen any other videos showing that it could leak, either. I think that it would have been better to stay with the same concept and just leave a space for a travel brush. Overall, it still seems like a great product and I hope to buy one eventually. Great review video, Eve!

  • @thecherrymuffin2674

Wow, this palette is super thought out, damn. It's really nice to see a product takes the thoughts of the artist's who use it into consideration, it really shows in its design. Little things such as the grooves on the water pots to hold your brushes is just a really nice touch, I'm sure it's things like that that make painting with it a much nicer experience. The only thing I would really be concerned about in regards to painting outside is how to dispose of the water in the pots once you're done in order to pack the palette away. It's no problem if you're at home, or perhaps at a park (pouring the water onto the grass is an option I'm sure, although maybe not a great one). But if you want to paint somewhere like a cafe or a museum - which this palette would be awesome for if you don't want to use water brushes - I can't really think of a lot of places to get rid of it. Perhaps you can use the last of it up to wash your palette clean, but if you don't have enough paper towels to mop it all up, or have an obscene amount of water left over, it might be a little tricky. Anywho, that's just my thoughts, I loved your take on this palette and I can't wait to see the next video, thank you!

Eve, I am happy to have found you on UA-cam recently. I have a very limited budget so being able to see and hear objective opinions saves me so much $$ and disappointment. I have seen a couple of videos about the original palette... it does appear the modifications they made were good ones. I still think it would offer more flexibility if they could add a thumb ring of some design so you have the option to hold it if you want. Glad WN pans fit and they now have the option of purchasing additional ones. The included brush is a clever design, but they should improve their current brush... there are synthetic fibers now on the market made to hold more water, or a natural synthetic/fiber hybrid. I have three different forms of arthritis which limits how much weight I can carry into the field and my hands are so seriously impacted that I cannot hold even a small metal palette for long, so this palette would be wonderful to use across my thigh! Love having two containers of water; one to rinse my dirty brush and use the other for clean water. I always take several Viva paper towel sheets with me anyway, so cleaning up the water isn't an issue for me. I would very much appreciate being given one of these palettes since this would be a luxury I cannot afford. Thank you for your informative and well-done videos! Maggie~

I agree with some other comments I have seen that the water containers are one of this palettes best features. The smaller half pans are kind of an inconvenience but at least they are separate from the actual palette itself, as this lends better to being able to customize your palette over a longer period of time. But if they are planning on selling those separately then it isnt too much of a downside for me. :-)

I've seen many reviews of this palette - love the construction of the lid/palette cups and the band/clasp is a nice touch. I was going to suggest you use the band to hold your brushes but I see you did that right at the end of the video!
However the limited range of half pans that can fit in the palette is the same frustration I had with the ubiquitous Cotman set. My ideal palette would be able to take any kind of pans. And also have the palette cups that tuck in. Oh and maybe a ceramic mixing surface. This is a neat set, though.

Late comment - but just a tip. If your metal clip is a bit loose and tends to slide off, secure it by pushing the rubber band up beside it - that will hold it in place 😉

Awesome review Eve! I wonder if I'll ever use it outdoor. I'm pretty sure it will not fit on my thighs lol. I'm such a clutz I'd probably spill the water on me. I would probably use the water compartment for my waterbrushes. This palette would be awesome for the Daniel Smith Sticks I plan on buying. They're currently on sale at the Deserres near my home for around 7 bucks! :O I was struggling choosing colors, to fit on my current palette, with this I could buy all the colors I want! Or I might try doing a skin tone palette in it...hum... I wish there was a full pan version though, I like to use big brushes. Anyway, it will complement nicely the schmincke historical palette I recently got. When I saw your review of it, I thought it would be the perfect entry to professional watercolors, automatically clicked the link in your video description and it was on sale! So thank you for that review too! I really learn a lot watching your channel

    Salut, Eve 😊
Thanks for the revue, I can see now that this new version seems a little better than the first one I saw on other UA-camrs. It will be nice if they can sell apart some empty pans as the others don’t fit and I dont have W&N. I have to lister a second time to take the name of your Da Vinci colors. I really love the first two sets I bought (warm &cool and Quinacridone one). I know they are on sale (liquidation) at Hachem. I did not buy it at Jackson’s because I am on a budget right now and I find it a little expensive, but ..... interesting, I will put it on my waiting list 😉 as I am curious and would love to try this outdoors......not in our Montreal winter ! Love your sketches. Did I recognized your own mint color in the first one ? I did liked both with a slight preference for the last one, the brush makes a big difference !
Thanks again for a very informative review, as always.

Thanks for another great review Eve. Like many others I like the concept but the price doesn’t seem to me to represent great value for money. It would cost me in England the equivalent of about $45-50. This seems steep for an empty palette when for a an extra $10-15 I could get a Sennelier or Scmincke tin palette with 8 or 12 half pans

I agree that it's not a great deal outside of the US. Even for me, in Canada, with the exchange rate and the shipping fees, it costs a bit more than I'm comfortable with. If I were doing plein air often, it might be worth the investment.

  • @MeowMeowKapow
    @MeowMeowKapow 6 років тому +1

I think the second piece came out much better than its initial version, and I think that has a lot to do with being able to lay down a lot of color in one stroke rather than having to go back and forth and worry about the paper drying in the meantime. If you wanted to, since you're using glue tack to keep your brush in place anyway you could always cut off part of the handle of a brush that you like if it fits otherwise.
My impressions of this palette overall are kind of mixed. I like that it's self-contained, but one of the biggest draws it has, the fact that you can balance it on your leg if you're outside, would be useless to me because my leg is wider than the space it has available. I also really like the double-ended brush, but I also think it's a smaller size than I would use regularly (Though I still honestly think it's actually the coolest feature of the whole thing.). However, the one real complaint that used to exist, the fact that the little metal piece could be easily lost, was remedied with the really clever and simple solution of that rubber bracelet and I really appreciate and admire that the creator took that feedback to heart.
All in all, if I had this palette I'd use it for a couple of things. First of all, I'd test it thoroughly myself and use it in a video because it can't hurt to have another investigator on the job despite basically everyone on UA-cam here already having stated their opinions. But secondly, I think I'd use it as a palette that lives in my purse at all times. Right now, for travel water I use little collapsible cups that don't take up much room and are really convenient, but having them already be part of the design for this palette itself is really appealing and I like that I'd be able to just easily grab this kit and move it from bag to bag as needed. I'd also be curious to see if I could devise a way of holding it in one hand or securing it to my portable workstation in some way as I'd like to use it outdoors but, as stated, wouldn't be able to use it across my leg as intended. I find this portable painter interesting but I'm not sure if I'm impressed by it and I'd like to find out if I could be.

    Hi !
I'm not very convinced by this palette... It's meant to be compact, but it can only hold 12 colors, and i don't find it so useful. If you have to bring a separate water bottle to fill the containers, then empty back the dirty water in it, and have some additionnal towels and pencil case... I'd rather take a palette that can hold a good sized brush and a mini one, have a pencil with an eraser and a separate bottle of water. I feel there is some hassle in setting up the palette that wouldn't quite fit the way i like painting. I'm not posting this to enter the giveaway, but i thought i'd share my opinion (even though it's negative, sorry :( ) . I'm much more fond of metal palettes like the bijou box or quarter pan palette you reviewed :)
And surprisingly, i preferred the first painting you made. Something about the colors, and perhaps about the brushstrokes in the clouds and the shape of the lake.

Interesting, I've seen this in a few videos, I don't paint plein air however I would find this useful as it is compact and stands above the ground it would definetly save space when working indoors I sometimes struggle with where to put my palette and glass jars when I have a painting taped to a board. A question about brushes, do you find much difference between using sable and synthetic I was considering a switch to sable but I'm concerned with how ethical so I wonder if its worth it.

Hello Eve. What is the width of the palette ? Can a plus size artist put it on their leg? It seems like a lovely palette. I just got myself the Daler Rowney 1/4 one (I replaced some colors) but for me it is more practical and I have more colors. The only downside is that when there is too much water in the pans the colors leak. Let’s just say that putting my Naples yellow next to my indigo wasn’t the best idea. I’ll put some glue and see how it goes. Did you have this issue with yours?
And of course: happy new year to you! Great health and lots of art good and bad for the coming year! :)

This palette gives me mixed feelings. I enjoy the fact you can place it securely on your leg as you sit down to paint. That is brilliant. But I feel that the clip thing is awkward. I would have put an elastic on one container and a post on the other container. that way it can be securely tied together, without something small but vital to possibly lose. I do not mind the specific half pan size, especially since they will sell more separately. I do wish they would have included a brush with natural hair, and proper cap, rather than the two size flip brush that barely fits. Thank you for the opportunity to win this palette! If I do, I might just have to make my own adjustments to it. :)

I agree with everything you said here, though a natural hair brush would just be too expensive. I'm curious as too how sturdy the plastic is. How many times could the wells be pulled on and off before one of them breaks off?

Yeah it would make everything more expensive, plus it would make the palette unavailable for people who prefer to avoid natural hair for ethical reasons :)

Maybe then they could add the option of no brush included? That way the price and ethical liability could be adjustable to include everyone.

yeah your right :) Im sure they will do that soon
, but maybe it was a little to much for the first sales :)

Kelly Lester In my mind, no artist needs to use a brush made from real hair to create beautiful art of any genre, as there are plenty of high quality synthetics that replicate water hold, but each to their own. I would never consider buying this if it came with such a brush though so I presume they would lose sales.

p.s. It is a pity many standard half pans don’t fit, I have so many wonderful handmade paints...

Big difference on the second painting. Do you have any of the Silver Black velvet Travel brushes they go up to a 8. Thank you for the opportunity to win a palette.

My davinci colbalt teal doesn’t really set up in a pan. Do you have that problem?

The center part of the palette looks to me exactly like cotman and screams too much plastic. I generally dont appreciate separators between my pans and would rather have empty wide rows where I could fit a combination of large and half pans, or squeeze in an extra pan in every row. Otherwise it seems like a cool design for people with skinny legs :D
