I love your giggles. I love how in the midst of awful smells and rotting plants you still manage to find the good in all of it. Thank you for inspiring me. Keep sparkling!
100% safe space! Thank you for sharing. It certainly is about learning and getting to know our plants better. I feel like if all plants grew perfectly it wouldn’t be as fun and enjoyable. The challenge (as stressful as it can be) is rewarding and worth it ❤️🪴
Thank you for this video. It’s comforting to know that even amazing plant parents can have struggles with their babies. Good luck with your problem children 😉😁
I remember it's often said in vegetable and flower gardening that you have to increase the potassium when a plant's in bloom or fruiting. Maybe the same applies to your flowering alocasia? Also, leaf tip burning is said to hint at calcium deficiency (magnesium deficiency sometimes too, depending on the veining pattern, too). That, or maybe it can't handle too much light? Maybe humidity contributes too? I hope they all thrive soon! Looking forward to an update!
Thank you Rylan 😊 I was thinking of putting one in soil and one in LECA to see the difference! Maybe I should just go with a chunky mix! Thank you so much 💚🤩
I'm in Vancouver BC and I've had huge issues with root rots on all my aroids and now have all of them permanently living in sphagnum moss. And because they are not in soil, I fertilize them with Dyna-Gro Foliage-Pro at 1/2 straight to give them all the nutrients and micronutrients they need. Honestly, sphagnum moss has been a life savour and solved all my root rots issues, you might want to give it a try :)
Whenever a Syngonium throws a tantrum - give it light and humidity… they are like the Phoenix of the plant world… they be coming back! So don’t fret about the Rayii. It’s really refreshing to know that someone with your knowledge, and experience, can still suffer with struggling plants. Now I wouldn’t wish anyone struggles on their wishlisters, but it is a nice little, “you aren’t the only one” memo that I needed (as my Alocasia Frydek is definitely on the struggle bus right now!) Great video - hope you enjoyed that Chipotle!
I can't imagine showing a haul of my plants that are dying, it would devastate me...seeing you trying to hide your face behind the pots was so funny. Loved the video and very insightful!
If there’s one thing that I’ve learned from Alocasia, it’s that they pretty much dislike water, except for certain types like Alocasia Frydek (leave them dry a bit too long and they’ll shed a leaf after the next watering). But in general they like to be a bit dry before watering like philodendron. Even with semi-outdoor placement in tropical country, I water them about once a week (except the frydek, they got watered about every 3-4 days during dry season). In emergency, it’s always safe to propagate them by cutting the rhizomes. I’ve saved many alocasia from dying while multiplied them this way. A lot more fun than alocasia bulbs propagation too
Thank you so much for this video. As a somewhat new plant parent that's watched soooooo many plant videos on this platform, it's very reassuring to see that no, you don't have to be a plant whisperer to have plants and even still there will be some that you may lose. I was thinking that you professional plant people never have issues with your plants, and I'm glad to see that sometimes it's not the person, sometimes it's just the plant.
FYI- I water my siltepecana less than most of my others and it hold the water. Like- I went ten days without watering a pot with four plants and the leaves did not droop at all.
Kevinnnn! don't feel embarrassed. It doesn't matter how long you've cared for plants or how knowledgeable, I'm sure we all have plants that are struggling and does not look so pretty. I know they'll bounce back in your care:)
I also got a BMF from Understory (summer 2019), IT IS STILL TINY!!! I have chopped it a few times, mostly as insurance because it didn't seem to be doing great, but right now it's putting out new leaves and they're sloooowwlyyyy getting bigger! I have it in a really chunky soil, in a terrarium. Humidity is anywhere from 75% to 100% (not on purpose, lots of leca in the terrarium and if I leave the door shut too long the humidity builds). Patience is key with this baby, I think.
Thanks for showing this perspective. I too made a mistake recently and ruined my 3 leaf Phil. Splendid by not giving enough air circulation for the roots and they rotted. I chopped it and not all is lost.
Ugh, Kevin! Let me just say I’ve been lurking your videos for some time and just the other day decided to subscribe. I don’t know what took me so long but that’s besides the point. I watch SO many plant youtubers, but YOU my friend give me ALL the feels. I find myself laughing at one second, devastated at another, excited at the next… rollercoaster rides. You are definitely a fun person to watch and are so animated that you make me feel your emotions (as weird as that sounds). In my mind we’re best friends 😂
Hello, you can avoid rotting by changing the water more frequently and washing the cutting and the container really well rubbing with your fingers. Also, you can add a bit of regular 3% hydrogen peroxide to the water the cutting is in. You can dilute it in half or even less of a concentration. All these practices should help with preventing rot.
Thanks for showing us that even you have plants on the struggle bus. Hopefully we can all learn and your next update will be about how they have recovered!
Thank you for your refreshing transparency. We love our plants like children so we feel some shame when they are not doing as well as we hoped. Plants have taught me so much about the perils of perfectionism. All that is living is flawed, and I love them all the more for it. Thanks for the great video.
Hey and here we "meet" again I reacted on your Silver Dragon on your Instagram page. Ive got a lot of Alocasia al shapes and sizes lol. But if you are a overwaterer "is that a word? " Make sure your soil is very airy and draining. If you mix your soil put in a few handsfull per pot. In your personal case I would suggest 1/3 perlite 1/3 regular potting soil and 1/3 orchid bark.... If you want to spoil them rotten, and I know you want to also mix a bit of wormcastings. With this mixture and only water when the pot feels light again if you pick it up they wil do fine. Don't give up on them yet, they are your teachers....or was it tease 😂. Greetings from Steklex3 the Netherlands. If you have any other plant questions feel free to ask. PS love your video's your personality makes me laugh every time especialy when you drop those darn lica balls 😁
Thank you!!! I definitely need to add more aeration. I have been experimenting with different mixes but definitely need to add more bark, perlite, pumice, etc.
Very brave of you. I feel so dang guilty when I kill a plant unintentionally. My Piper ornatum absolutley died on me this week and I been so proud of its growth :'(
Aroids, philos and antherium never do well with me, but my solver dragon is thriving. I learned to stick them in a greenhouse and leave them alone. I don't move them, even when watering. Hopefully it gets better for you.
Isn’t the rayii so gorgeous?? I am obsessed with mine. I heard a really great tip on Alocasia in soil is that they should pretty much dry out, unless they’re working on a leaf, then you should just let it mostly dry out. It was surprising to me, but it’s worked well so far! Good luck with the rehab projects. 💚
The Rayii had a worm to butterfly transformation. Your Alocasia Golden…..is definitely alive. On your last plant perhaps you should look at it as a leaf count-you’re ahead!
Thank you for sharing your “struggles”. It’s reassuring to know that you’re going through the same things like all plant parents. I lost my entire beautiful PPP to stem rot over the winter. 😭 😭 😭
As I watched your video for longer, I saw that you mentioned you shouldn't "drench" the plant when watering. Well, actually, that is how all potted plants need to be watered. From the top, drenching, even multiple times, then letting them drain and put them back in place. Even cacti and succulents. Based on my understanding from reading multiple resources, potted plants need to be grown in much more draining medium than that of their counterparts living in their natural habitat. And by well-draining, I mean really really well-draining. This is because when you put a plant in a pot filled with a potting medium, no matter what you do, some water perches in the medium and the height of this perching water is determined by the laws of physics, as is everything. Shortly, it's better to use terracotta pots, to drill more holes into them, to use aeration material (pumice/scoria/clay pebbles etc.) more than the organic stuff. When you have a non well-draining mix, you need to monitor the plant very closely and water very little, which is not good in the long run, because there will be lots of mineral build-up and it's hard to gauge the water amount. But, if you use a well-draining mix (more than natural habitat), you have more control over the plant, as you can adjust watering frequency and not worry about over-watering, and you can "drench" plants and deeply water them, because your mix won't hold onto excess water anyway. End of rant and nice wishes to you 🤗🥰
Really thank you for sharing these plants and the not so perfect because it really really helps me learn how to care for a plant after they go through the not so perfect me plants 😊and do more of this kinda videos they really do help I'm calling u plant doctor 😊
Hey! I still don't know what went wrong. I was going to check the roots in the video but I didn't have time. I also think it might be a light issue because I have an Amydrium Medium Silver under stronger grow lights and it's THRIVING 🤩
Am I the only one that cannot differentiate between the S. Rayii and Wenlandii?! I’m thinking a lot of them being sold online are mislabeled maybe?? I get so confused, even after googling. I have one of each and they look reeeeeally similar.
Love that you're showing the bad with the good. I've lost so many plants, some of which were devastating. That Melano would've had me in TEARS. 😣 Way to hold it together 😂
My Burle Marx Fantasy is a really fast grower, it get's a new leaf every week or every second week. But they need some time after propagation, because they root slowly.
Thank your for sharing what we all experience. Like you said, it's an opportunity to learn from our mistakes - and that will help the future plant babies!
Had to chop up my melanochrysum too. Had it in moss because I purchased it that way. It was doing so well for almost a year but I probably overwatered it. The leaves grew all tiny and deformed and the rooots were all mushy. 😦 It's in leca now, because I am more used to it than moss I hope it won'tdie....such a diva. Almost as big of a diva as verrucosum.😒
I want to share my secrets to make sure my propagations wont rot( Isay secrets cus very very few people are talking about it), that is... to put them in a vase with an air pump, i have loooots of propagations in my 5 gallon aquarium, the air will help to oxygenate the water and ensure there is not like standing water. that is what causes stem rotting and if you just want to make sure they wont die add a little bit of white shark mycorrhizae to your water solution, ( these are my plant producer pieces of advise) this is commonly used for Hydroponic marihuana production, and believe me, weeds are way waaaay more dramatic than Philos, monsteras etc. Hope you the best, greetings from costa rica♥
Thank you so much Tomasssss. I heard about this and definitely want to try!! I just haven't gotten around to it. I value this advice a lot so thank you again 💚🤩🥰
Many plants only live during summertime when spring is coming they turn yellow and dry out till next year... we need year-round plants. they live all year for years. We do not have in our home anything to replace that sun or heat during summer, is why I said I do not follow trends....... First we need to research the plant and then decide if to buy or not to buy, the sun changes direction after summer. north, east , south west windows?. it does not matter. You need all year round house plants.
Burle marx fantasy i grow in mix of moss , perlite and a little bark chip does ok. , nice to see the other side of plant parenting too gives a more realistic feel to it all.
I just smashed one of my baby cuttings (she was so beautiful 😭) by dropping a glass on it, so THANK YOU for posting this. Makes me feel better that someone so amazing at plants can have problems too. All the internet hugs to you!
This video just helped me feel better about the situation with a few of my faves right now. I'm so sad about a few plants of mine 😖 hurts even more when they're the pricey ones!
Look, Kevin, you use the General Hydroponic, 1: 1: 1 formula, as I understand from your videos. When your plants start to bloom, you should read the instructions (on any General Hydroponic bottle) and change the nutritional formula to 1: 2: 3. Then the flowers will not take nutrients from the leaves.
Kevin, what a "situation"! 😀 I was laughing all the way with you because you try to make the best of it all. We enjoy when you present the plants that are lush and beautiful therefore, I dont think we will be mad at you when you show the other side of what can go wrong. In the mean time, I await the progress of what will come from them. Thanks for sharing.
Omg.. Kevin... Am I seeing it right, you have some struggling plants, this is unreal for you, doesn't seems right, haha, but I guess struggle is real. I'm sure you can wake the dead to life. Take care
Love to see that you are human and can make some mistakes too even if almost all your plants are gorgeous. i'm not alone after all! Thanks you I'm feeling better now about all my bad looking plants 😄
This was my favourite video! Its great how you give your explanation as to why you think the plants were so sad and OMG you almost chucked that silver dragon out the window!! 😳😂
Lemme be real right back, booboo. Your plants have given me The Envy *several* times so this video is a breath of fresh air, okay?! Thank you for sharing this V real part of plant collecting ❤️ I would never wish struggle on another plant parent but it helps to see it happening elsewhere as well 😅
Thank you for sharing. Haha, now I want a burrito. Great to see the good, bad, and the ugly. We all have struggles with some plants haha, at least you aren’t composting any of them.
“Is this ASMR?” Lmfao I’m dead 😂 also - thank you for reminding me to air layer my giant verru just in case because a middle leaf is randomly dying and I’m SKRESSED
omg rip your silver dragon 😱😱 my BMF is also not doing well. i just put her in my humidity chamber so 🤞🏾. also shout out to your supportive bf who brings chipotle! 🖤
It happen to my philodendron melanochrysum all leaves turn to yellow :-( but I am so lucky I still have 30 days guarantee and I got new replacement of it.
@@kevin. i am so happy about your mail. I see ever your videos. I am so many older than you and i would help you. Your other plants are so beautifull. You make a great job. I love you and your videos. Many greetings (greats was wrong) from germany Simone
I had the same problem with my alocasia black velvet 😂😂😂 … the problem with mine is when i cut their flower off they died back 🤦🏻♀️😂😂😂 is like they angry to me cause chop their flower and they gone and reset from start with little leave 😂😂😂
Did you try a Hydrogen Peroxide 3% solution? Maybe this can help against the rot issue. If you haven't done that yet, I suggest you to isolate the ones looking sick from the healthy ones, until you know for sure what is going on. Good luck! :)
I love your giggles. I love how in the midst of awful smells and rotting plants you still manage to find the good in all of it. Thank you for inspiring me. Keep sparkling!

I love that you show the struggle of owning plants sometimes too! I think its important!
Kevin… you gotta do more of this kind of videos. It brings me back my happiness 😂🤣 love the imperfections
Thank you for this video. It’s comforting to know that even amazing plant parents can have struggles with their babies.
Good luck with your problem children 😉😁
Aw thank you 💚😊 it happens to everyone and I felt like my channel was a little one sided. So I'm glad you liked it! 🥰

In this day and age where “loud” catches audience… I really appreciate your calm voice. 😊
Not only came here for those plants, but also for your talking. That cute!
OMG!!! I L💜VE, L💜VE as you say, “I’ m being dramatic!” I call it cuteness. I also, get dramatic over my 🪴 plants.
Thank you for sharing the other side, the one with struggles lol we all experience this!
I'm glad you liked it! It's true! It happens to everyone 🥰💚
Thank you so much for sharing this! Showing the real plant parent journey is so appreciated ❤️
I would ditch the leca for your melano. Mine always eventually got root rot in leca. Chunky soil mix has never steered me wrong.
Thank you Rylan 😊 I was thinking of putting one in soil and one in LECA to see the difference! Maybe I should just go with a chunky mix! Thank you so much 💚🤩
@@bapa6612 I mix orchid bark, leca, soil, perlite, and worm castings. They need a well draining but also nutrient dense medium.
Mine is in lava rock/pumice in a net pot over water with a wick

TFS. It’s nice to see the bad with the good. Gives us mere plant parents less anxiety about why some of our plant look like shit.
I can't imagine showing a haul of my plants that are dying, it would devastate me...seeing you trying to hide your face behind the pots was so funny.

You can safe the Alocasias. They are not dead, until the bulbes are mush. Hope you didn’t throw them away.

This video just helped me feel better about the situation with a few of my faves right now. I'm so sad about a few plants of mine 😖 hurts even more when they're the pricey ones!
Hi Kevin. Which site can I order those net pots together with the planter? Thanks!
This is actually a really good question … where do you get your net pots, Kevin?
Video on your soil mixture maybe?
Hugsss to all of those beautiful plants. Hope they all can survive💖.. plants struggles is real. Lol.
I giggled every time you did!!! Great video! Xoxo
The melanochrysum situation is really terrifying to me. Why? Coz i’m gonna repot mine tomorrow. 😖
Oh my....Could there be pests? Or something in the water?
I don't think so! I think it's just my plant care habits with these babies 🤣💚
Why you dont use living forest most for propagation.? It.s better andd faster to growing roots...
LOL SUCH A HUGE SITUATION 🤣 I'm hoping they bounce back. Thank you 💚😊
Ohhhhh a 3 or 6 month update on these babies would be stellar!!
Omg.. Kevin... Am I seeing it right, you have some struggling plants, this is unreal for you, doesn't seems right, haha, but I guess struggle is real. I'm sure you can wake the dead to life. Take care

My wendlandii seems similar but more resilient than the rayii.
Omg I am stressing just looking at them... :( But you are doing your best!
Did you try a Hydrogen Peroxide 3% solution? Maybe this can help against the rot issue. If you haven't done that yet, I suggest you to isolate the ones looking sick from the healthy ones, until you know for sure what is going on. Good luck! :)
You made my night. Hilarious 😆
