MK7 VW Golf GTE - 12v Battery Low Warning 12v Battery issue - No need to replace battery!

  • The battery on our 2016 Golf GTE was working perfectly but I started to have warning lights to say that the 12v battery was low and then needed to be replaced.
I had charged the battery and it was maintaining charge perfectly but still the problem persisted.
It turns out that there is a battery replacement 'count down' a bit like a service reminder. This can be accessed through VCDS or other ODB2 readers and either turned off or reset.
So far the warning light has not come back on.
In this video I also show you where the jump start / charging points are on a MK7 Golf GTE.
    Good luck!

Thanks. Indeed the same eror - tested the battery and it was 12.8v so clearly not an issue. I have to enter and reset the couter you are talking about.
Mine is a passat gte from 2018 with almost 200k km on board.

Just commenting in case others land here from google- I had the same fault on screen (2017 GTE) and the car was completely dead. Mechanic said it was a (£7) fuse by the battery in the boot. He said he’d seen a few GTEs behave like that so worth checking because again the battery was absolutely fine.

Another easy fix but VW would have charged hundreds of pounds to fix when it was something simple 👍

Hi, could you tell me which fuse is it ? Reference or something so I can find it on internet ? Because mine show battery low but the voltage is good.

Confirming for a passat gte 2017.
YOU DO NOT NEED to charge the battery from the engine bay or directly.
IF you plugin the phev charger it charges the 12V battery also (tested it with a multimeter).
In my case the 12v batter warning showed. The battery is healthy - 12.8 when no load.
The workaround with VCDS is go into "19 Gateway" ->adaptation -> battery manufacturer or series. Change either the manufacturer or the series (nobody cares what it its mine was 11111).
After that you can delete the stupid "lv low voltage trigger error" from "19 Gateway" in vcds.
    The error disappears.
It appears to be linked to 7-8 years of life. (my audi 1.2 tdi had the original battery for 18 years so the years is not a good metric for battery life)

I had a battery low warning. Chose to drive hoping it would charge, wrong. Got onto the motorway in cruise control, engine running. Car threw up, cruise failure, power steering failure, then braking failure and then everything went dead. Engine had cut and the car was a 60mph rolling peice of metal. No lights nothing. I pulled into the hard shoulder and with two feet pushing the brake pedel as there was no electrical assist, i managed to stop. When the AA recovery man connected a 12v boost box, i could hear the car's gearbox returning to 'N' as it was still in 6 gear. I emailed VW about this with no reply.
To summarize, be sure the 12v battery is good before driving.👍👍😎

Did you work out what the issue is, am having the same problem,

Oook that sounds like something else. The thermal engine should run by itself almost after it starts...in your case it sounds more like a bad alternator

Well...I know you do not own a VW. And if you do the problem you presented is fake

Hi guys, I want to ask if there is any coding or anything to do with VCDS after charging ?

Does anyone know if this only a GTE issue? I have a 2017 Golf R that seems to have a similar problem with thinking it's battery is low but on inspection is fine.

If you use ev a lot you're not charging the 12V battery's after that mileage it could easy go flat but still be rechargeable. Not sure those terminals you showed can be used for trickle charging but can be used for a jump start.

Which diagnostic tool did you use to clear the fault - was it VCDS or OBD Eleven?

Im using VCDS, would you be more specific about which module is it located in? or Bit #? Having a hard time finding it. Thank you

I suggest you this video ua-cam.com/video/IJAScg6JrYI/v-deo.html Basically you need to identify which of the three Battery coding options is the one for your car: Standalone, CAN Legacy Non UDS, or CAN UDS. Depending on which your car has, the procedure changes. But the process with VCDS will be like:
      Select control module > 19 CAN Gateway > 0A Long Adaptation > Battery replacement/Coding
      OR
Select control module > 19 CAN Gateway > 10 Adaptation > Battery Adaptation (Size, then Manufacturer, then Serial Number. Three values in total).
OR in case you have the standalone version:
Select control module > 61 Battery regulation > 07 Coding > New coding.

Does the traction battery not keep the 12v topped up?

Only if the cars actually on.

is it on the plus and minus poles that you can connect additional lighting (led bar..etc) or does it have to be connected to the battery itself?
in other words: are those poles only for charging?

I'm not 100% sure but I think you could use them for accessories.

    • @tomsixsix
      @tomsixsix Рік тому

You should only use a fused supply for accessories. Otherwise you are asking for a vehicle fire.
